It Can Do That: So I am an awful person:

yellowis4happy:

but I read my first Secret Six volume EVER today - Unhinged - and actually really just did not like it. At all. It felt like so much senseless violence and gore for absolutely no reason. Junior's secret origin did not make any sense to me, Bane felt like a suave, romantic, ridiculous impostor…

:)

No worries at all, I'm sorry you didn't like it, comics are expensive and it always sucks when a book isn't to your taste.

I would only disagree about the violence being pointless…I think when violence occurs in Secret Six, there are usually consequences and a reason. But every reader is entitled to their opinion and sometimes writers aren't very objective.

It's entirely possible it's just not your kind of book. All I can say is that you gave it a fair shot, and that is MUCH appreciated. Can't ask for fairer than that!

Does The Bat-Family Care About Social Justice?

Seems an odd, kind of frivolous question, but I'm genuinely curious.

Can you site stories where members of the bat-family took positive stances on social justice issues?

I can think of a few. Just curious to see what you guys think.

Muffins and detective work: a winning combination.

The stuff with Barbara's mom is often the most painful stuff to write in the book…when we love characters, we want them to be happy. But the larger truth is that they need to be true to themselves.  The question of forgiveness is such a huge one, and so painful and raw, sometimes.

I've spoken with a lot of readers who have had parents abandon them (it happened to me with my biological father) and the question Barbara faces seems very true to me…does she forgive, or does she choose NOT to forgive?

It's difficult stuff to write, sometimes.  But clearly, her mom is trying.

I think you're doing a great job, Gail!

one question: what's up with Babs' brother in the new 52? though really, I have no idea where he was pre-reboot. She did mention him, though, so I was curious.

I've had some shitty parental stuff happen, but I was lucky to have my siblings to lean on. I'd love if Babs and James Jr. had that too.

James, Jr. is very definitely on the periphery of events taking place in Gotham, right now. I promise he's coming, and maybe sooner than you think.

Good Tumblrs For Female Content In Comics?

Figures I should post some posts about tumblrs that actually do present cool, funny, interesting, meaningful and positive portrayals of females in comics.

This isn't a long list, I'm missing a bunch I'm sure, hopefully people can make some recommendations? Anyway, these are a few I have been looking at a lot, lately, and enjoying very much.  I bet you will, too, regardless of gender.

If you have suggestions for other tumblrs about women in comics, please suggest them.  It's not meant to be authoritative and there's no real requirements for what sort of tumblrs you can suggest, but please announce if a site is NSFW, okay?

Thanks, here's a few quick suggestions!

1) This site is nothing but gorgeous pieces of art featuring female superheroes. Lovely selection, quite droolworthy!

http://women-centric-comics.tumblr.com/

2) Very cool site that redraws oddball female superhero anatomy with more realistic poses, from the perspective of a storyboard artist. Good stuff (and I think a couple book I've worked on are in there).

3)Tumblr of the great Osborn and Supergirl writer, Kelly Sue DeConnick, a terrific writer and commentator.

4) The incomparable Kate Beaton, simply an amazing talent who is already a superstar:

5) Points out bizarre anatomy on female characters with intelligent commentary:

6) One of my favorites, does regular, scrupulous reporting of females in comics, both characters and creators.

Villains United #6

Why is it this panel still melts me every time?

Something in Scandal's expression, and they way her sheathed Lamines Pesar are almost like something she cuddles with.

I think it's also cool that until this moment, we only saw Scandal as a badass, we didn't really see her tender side, nor did we know who the 'beloved' was that she referred to, previously.

I don't know, but it definitely makes moon faces!
