When Someone Says...
"I have black friends," or, "I have gay friends," or, "most of my friends are women,"…
…and you just know the next thing they say is going to be hideous and bigoted…
…don't you just want to punch something?
GOD YES.
This happens more than you'd think. My psych teacher even pulled it on me a few weeks back. her words: "I love gay people. I have gay friends. Gay men have the best parties and the best make-up" - seriously?
HAHAHAHAHA!
I'm sorry, but…oh, my god. You just want to throw up your hands and go home.
Hi Gail! Ok, with less than two weeks until National Misfit Day, I just *have* to ask: what's the origin/reason behind "Daaaark Vengeance!"?
*********
This may be a little upsetting to some people in light of his more recent comments, but it was actually a little tribute, an homage, to one of my favorite characters from CEREBUS creator Dave Sim.
Dave had a character in Cerebus, and those early issues were some of the funniest, most moving comics ever made, called the Cockroach who was a parody of various superheroes over the course of the book. He started out as a Batman parody, and then a Moon Roach, then Captain America, then Wolverine (I might have the order completely wrong).
But basically, he was just a huge knucklehead, given to shouting inane catchphrases. A really funny character, and Cerebus, in my youth, was FAR AND AWAY my favorite comic. So it was a way to remember and honor those books that I enjoyed so much.
The Roach would do something stupid, drop a boulder on a banker and then say, "Unorthodox economic revenge! SSsssss!" And then bound away happily. Again, I might be paraphrasing.
So when I wanted a joyful character with a habit of being annoying and gumming up the words, she had to have a catchphrase before bounding away. I don't think the Roach ever said, "Dark vengeance," specifically, but there's no question at all that he was the inspiration for her catchphrase. She might even have said the, "Ssssss!" part at one time, but my memory fails me.
Dave Sim is one of the towering geniuses of the industry. He seems to think I'm the devil, which is a shame. I disagree with his philosophies about women—to be more accurate, I think they're positively goony, but I still feel those early Cerebus books are some of the best comics ever made, by anyone.

That issue was one of the hardest things to write I have ever been involved with.

This was the world. Is it still the world?...

This was the world. Is it still the world? Yes, there just aren't clearly-marked signs.
We have got to be better than this. We have to, or what's the POINT of us?
When privileged people start whining about the 'good old days,' this is the reality of their sad little daydreams.
I know it's well meaning but
The bullshit of positivity that is "disabled people are so inspiring" for what exactly? Getting up in the morning and living like most humans are expected to just because they happened to be born with or have some kind of condition that they have probably adjusted to like all humans adjust to circumstances.
We're not inspiring, we're just living, leave us alone, quit acting like your approval or meeting your standards is all we live for.
Reblogging to remember. No one likes to be thought of as an attribute.

Fun Article...
…about the Make Your Own, Then tumblr idea from a little while back, where aspiring writers and artists can meet and discuss ideas for comics collaborations:
http://buquad.com/2012/03/25/tumblr-artists-say-to-make-your-own-then/
Nice article!
The actual tumblr itself is here:
http://makeyourownthen.tumblr.com/
And the idea is still valid, a few people there have had success already. The idea is to use the social network tools, in this case Tumblr, to connect with other aspiring comics creators and put something together for web or print publication.
Exciting stuff, and well worth looking into, if comics is your goal!
