I definitely read this one as Batgirl 2.5, so. Consider it a sort of coda to National Misfit Day yesterday.

I have no idea how I missed this one last year!!! Bad, bad me.

Well, darn it all…I'm making sure it's seen this time.

So cute I can't STAND it!

LOVING National Misfit Day!

Seriously, go check out some of the art and sketches today at:http://thehappysorceress.tumblr.com/   and please feel free to contribute your own.

Misfit is kind of a rare creature, a young girl female hero who isn't defined purely by sex or sexuality, who isn't a spin-off of an icon, and who is unabashedly optimistic and bubbly.  I am really delighted that she has so many readers, and THANK YOU, Happy Sorceress for doing this!

I wrote a piece that reveals a secret of Misfit's past that I think will really surprise people…it should be up on Sorceress' page later this evening!

And so it continues.

What the actual FUCK? If that was a black driver running over white kids, she'd be drawn and quartered by now AND we we be treated to dozens of news reports condemning the entire black community. God DAMN it.

Nail on the head, Gail.  Anyone want to take bets how long it takes for these kids and their parents to be dragged through the mud and somehow made to look the bad guys despite simply asking for justice to be meted out.

And she has the goddamn GALL to not only BLAME the kids in her latest response, but to say she did it only because she was concerned for their safety. That woman is the living embodiment of white privilege and cruelty and dishonesty. DISGUSTING.

Ahhh, this is only 20 minutes from where I live! D:

I don't know if this is a race issue though. Couldn't it be she treats ALL kids horribly? There are a lot of wreckless drivers around this area that blame everyone but themselves for anything they do.  Especially if it's a kid playing in the street.

Oh, horseshit. Witnesses say she told these kids she had JUST TRIED TO RUN OVER that they, 'didn't belong there,' after having only seen them from her truck in passing.

How did she KNOW that they 'didn't belong there?'  Never mind the fact that they did, in fact, live in the neighborhood?

Thank god she was their to save the neighborhood from these kids, because as we all know, most drug dealers and gang members ride in go-karts in quiet neighborhoods.

After watching the… "less-editorialized" coverage from the local TV station… I think there's a strong possibility that this isn't the first time these neighbors have tangled, they might all be jerks to some extent, and maybe the sheriff is tired of their collective shenanigans.

Also bearing in mind there's a lawsuit in progress.

I find it highly unlikely that these people have been neighbors for any length of time and this is suddenly the first thing that's erupted between them.

IF THAT WERE ALL TRUE, EVERY BIT…what the hell difference would it make?

If you DELIBERATELY hit a child with your vehicle, other than for reasons of protecting yourself from endangerment, there's no excuse of neighborhood bad blood that excuses that.

Notice how the charge of racism here is imagined to be worse than the charge of trying to run over kids. I don't mean that we shouldn't think worse of someone who hates Black kids in particular compared to someone who just hates children period, because we actually should. But nothing sets our "innocent until proven guilty!" reflex off quite as fast as the "r" word.

Someone with more authority is going to say this better than I can, but…racism is inextricably linked to violence. They aren't separate issues. This lady endangered kids because she thought they 'didn't belong in her neighborhood.' How do you take the racism OUT of that equation?

These kids were playing, in their own neighborhood, on their own streets, and that so offended this white woman that she ran into them, over the sidewalk, with her truck. No one is saying her racism is worse than her reckless disregard for these kids' lives. They are just pointing out that you wouldn't have the latter without the former.

"The fact is that transgender people—in particular, transgender people of color—have simply not..."

"

The fact is that transgender people—in particular, transgender people of color—have simply not experienced the same strides forward as their lesbian, gay and bisexual brothers and sisters. A landmark new report, 'Injustice at Every Turn,' presents undeniable proof. This report, released on Friday, is based on a comprehensive survey of over 6,000 transgender people and the findings are too shocking to ignore, especially when it comes to African-American transgender people.

Our transgender brothers and sisters are far more likely to lack proper medical care, to be unemployed, to live in extreme poverty, and to be HIV-positive—and that's when compared to their white transgender counterparts, not just the general population. The survey's respondents were four times more likely than the general population to live in extreme poverty. One in five reported having been refused a home or apartment, another one in five report having been refused health care. More than one in five, 22 percent, reported having been harassed by law enforcement, and nearly half reported fear of seeking assistance from police. African American respondents reported all of this in even higher numbers.

"

If you haven't already, I recommend taking a look at that report. The race statistics are sobering, and too important to ignore.

And nonbinary siblings…

But yes, sobering statistics.

This is for National Misfit Day. I really like drawing Charlie for some reason. This was drawn with Pitt pens and Prismacolor markers. This is the first full-color drawing I've ever done with prismacolor markers. I like them, but they take some getting used to.

Also, this is another of my pastiches of Dan Decarlo. I really like drawing on Decarlo's model. It's a lot of fun.

LOVE DeCarlo, and love this piece!

Snuck some time away from my homework to sketch this up and slap some color on it for National Misfit Day!  She was such a fun, silly character…I'd love to see her in some kind of "junior Birds of Prey" teamup title, with Steph and Cass and all manner of other young girl heroes busting crime and having a ball.  Like a canon version of Super Best Friends Forever!

This is beautiful!
