MY LATEST OBSESSION: BB/CC Creams
I’m oh-so obsessed with BB Cream
I’m obsessed with BB/CC cream in general. If you don’t know what that is, it’s like foundation and in some cases, primer but not. It can give you coverage, but it’s as thick as foundation. In other words, it’s witchcraft. You often will see some of my character use it in books.
So what’s the difference between BB and CC cream, you ask?
Basically, BB cream is an extremely lightweight foundation with some skincare stuff thrown in. CC cream is a color-corrective version that can tone down redness or sallowness. Apparently there’s also a DD cream, but I’ve never used it.
I love foundation, and yes, you will get a post about what foundations I’m obsessed with, but my day to day go to make up—okay, I actually don’t wear anything most days—but if I’m going somewhere and sometimes even when I’m doing events, I’ll just use a BB or CC cream, mainly because I love how it feels like I’m not wearing anything. If I want the BB/CC cream to last, I usually do a primer first, the BB/CC cream and then finishing powder after I do a blush or a really half assed job at contouring. I also like to use BB/CC cream if I’m feeling lazy.
Also, please watch this girl’s video on contouring. Nothing makes me laugh harder.
“If men find out we can rearrange the bones of our face, we’re finished.”
Some of my favorite BB and CC creams are:
L’Oreal Paris Makeup Magic Skin Beautifier BB Cream ($) – this is a pretty cheap drugstore version that works better than the vast majority of the department/luxury brands. This could technically be worn under foundation, but I would not recommend.
Peter Thomas Roth Skin to Die for CC Cream ($$) – One of the times I’ve been complimented on my skin was when I was wearing this. It’s hard to find, though, and shade selection is crap. Would not recommend wearing under foundation.
IT Cosmetics CC Cream ($$$) – I feel like this is the brand that started it all. You do not wear this under foundation. I’ve seen reviews where people complained because that was how they were using it. User error right there.
Charlotte Tilbury, who is the bomb diggity and probably one of the few product lines I saw advertised on Facebook that is actually really good, has a Flawless Filter line that is sort of like a CC/BB cream and it’s one of my favorites. It has a full line of shades too, and can give you a really nice glow if you’re into that. Steph is not.
Pros
Very lightweight but is often buildable
Decent coverage
Doesn’t cake or crease
Great if you’re not a fan of foundation
Very natural looking
If you’re in the brands shade range, you don’t have to worry as much about perfectly matching skin tone since it’s so blendable. Is blendable a word? I don’t know. It is now.
Cons
Shade selection on many of the brands are seriously lacking. For example, back when IT Cosmetics first introduced their CC creams, I could wear their “deep” shade during the summer. I mean, I’m not the whitest person out there, but I’m pretty white. They have come a long way though.
Some of the green based CC creams designed to reduce redness end up making me look pasty and weird, like most green based products. I’ve found the BB/CC creams are no different.
Price
$, $$, $$$
Depends on the brand. You can get really great cheap ones and really amazing expensive one.
Well, this was a freaking fail: IT Cosmetics CC Cream with Illumination and CC Cream Matte Finish
This really isn’t so much a fail but more so the products just didn’t work for me. Since I love their original line, I was super excited to try both of them. Both felt too heavy for a CC cream, which can be a problem with some lines that have high SPF in them. It was also hard to match skin tone, which for me, at least, sort of defeats the point of being lazy.
Cons:
Heavy, thick and settled in creases
Pros
Both lines have a lot of great reviews, so this could be just be a personal thing.
Price
$$$
You can purchase CC+ Cream Illumination with SPF 50+ and see some customer reviews here.
You can purchase CC+ Cream Oil-Free Matte with SPF 40 and see some customer reviews here.
Bonus Product Rec!
BB/CC creams are kind of like skin perfectors. Even the regular ones will often erase redness, which is something I struggle with. I get these weird splotches of redness on my neck and upper chest, and sometimes on my cheeks. One of my greatest pet peeves is when people comment on the redness. It can be in the middle of the winter and someone, usually a complete freaking stranger, will be like, “Did you go somewhere and get sun burned?” or “Why is your skin so red?” First off, if you’re one of those people who sees anything you don’t understand or seems abnormal on another person and you feel this overwhelming need to comment or ask about it, stop before you do and punch yourself in the face. You’re an ass. Like, the only exception is if you’d think the person is legit dying. Any other reason just means you’re an ass who needs to learn how to people. The question is embarrassing and invasive. Also, do you think people don’t realize they have red splotches? Look, you just shouldn’t be commenting on people’s body. I mean, how is that even still happening?
Anyway, IT Cosmetics Bye Bye Redness powder is amazing. It really can diminish the look of redness. The cream version is the best, but it’s such a tiny jar. The powder is also really super effective. So, if you have skin prone to redness, this would be a great product for you to try. It’s in the $$$ price range, but I think it’s worth it.
STEPH’S CURRENT SKIN PERFECTOR OBSESSION: Tarte BB Tinted Treatment
To be perfectly honest, I very seldom use any concealer, foundation, or all-over-the-face cosmetics. I have a very lazy makeup method which typically involves taming my eyebrows, mascara, a little blush or bronzer, and a statement lip.
HOWEVER, for the random times that I do feel the need to have a light coverup, I will always reach for my tube of Tarte BB Tinted Treatment.
Technically, this product is moreso meant to be a primer/foundation base, however, I have been using it as a tinted moisturizer. This gives me *just* enough coverage to even out my complexion without caking my pores.
Pros
Can be used as a primer, or spot treatment
Has SPF 30 to protect your faaace
It’s also a moisturizer, so won’t dry out your skin
Cons
This line only has 4 shades (so deeper skin tones can’t use it)
Typically the shade I use (medium tan) is almost always sold out — hard to find
You definitely need to use a brush or sponge for application (I’ve never been able to get an even application with my fingers, lol)
Price
$$$ (Typically round $37, but you can get it cheaper during sales!)
You can purchase the Tarte BB Tinted Treatment and read customer reviews here.
Price Guide
$ – Under $10
$$ – $11-$30
$$$ – $31-$60
$$$$ – $60 – $100
$$$$$ (i.e. what the fuck, how much is this?) – over $100

MY LATEST OBSESSION (2): Candles & Home Fragrance
I’m oh-so obsessed with Bath and Body Works Home fragrance
I have a problem. It might be an addiction. Okay. It is an addiction.

The white baskets are filled with Wallflower bulbs.
I love Bath and Body Works candles and wallflowers. I have them separated by season—Spring/Summer/Fall/Winter—like any normal, dysfunctional adult. When people come into my house, they always say my house smells good, which I always sort of wonder if they expected it to smell bad, like an author on a deadline or something. The reason why it smells like hope and heaven instead of animal and desperation is strategically placed wallflowers, and maybe, if I’m feeling froggy, a candle burning or melting somewhere (thanks to UPS constantly breaking my damn candles, I have a ton of candle melts now). Nothing sends me into a rage when they change a perfect scent and it sucks. They do this often it seems. Please, think of the baby angels everywhere, and stop doing that.
My favorite scents, per season are:
Spring or immediately after Christmas: Champagne Toast, Black Merlot, Cherry, Frosted Cranberry, Cranberry Woods
Summer: Island Margarita, Peach Bellini, Pumpkin Apple (because it’s more of a candy then fall smell), any coconut, Watermelon Lemonade
Fall: Leaves, Autumn, Apple Crumble, Apple Harvest, A Perfect Autumn
Winter: Tis the Season, Winter, Balsam, Spiced Apple Toddy
Pros
They smell amazing
Wallflower scents don’t fade in a few days
Candle scents don’t fade
Bath and Body Works seems to have a sale every other week
Cons
Pretty sure that whatever is in those wallflowers may kill me one day. You spill that shit, it will eat your granite countertop.
Can’t plug in under cabinets anymore. Whatever is in that oil will warp actual wood. Let’s not think about what it does to your lungs.
Bath and Body Works discontinues and changes fragrances or relabels the same fragrance a million times. That is freaking annoying
Can trigger some people with migraines
Price
$, $$
It’s not the cheapest and it’s not the most expensive, but they also have a ton of sales.
Notes:
If you have a UPS driver or a husband who sort of just drops packages, you’ll end up with some broken candles if you order them online. Bath and Bodyworks is great about replacing them, BUT you can break them into chunks and melt them. That works!
You can order now (during their candle sale) here.
A cheap dupe for B&BW 3-Wick Candles: GLADE brand! They’re available as low as $5 and can be purchased via Target (and other local grocery stores).
Well, this was a freaking fail: Yankee Candle Tarts
Yankee Candle use to be the candle place to go to, so when I wanted to try some of their candle tarts to melt, I got all kinds of excited and ordered a shit ton of tarts. Half of the scents didn’t match the name or what you’d think they smell like, and I melted several of them, and couldn’t smell them until I got right up on it.
Cons:
Not a long lasting or powerful smell
Pros
Not that expensive
Price
$
Hey, it’s quite possible that I’m now nose snobby and just can’t smell the tarts. They may be great for you.
You can buy some (at your own risk) here.
STEPH’S CURRENT CANDLE OBSESSION: EVIL QUEEN CANDLES

Image found on Evil Queen’s website
Like Jen, I do love Bath and Body Works candles, butttt there’s an indie brand that I love so much more: Evil Queen.

Only a small part of my stash…
Woman-owned, Evil Queen is the shit. Their candles are sassy (and oftentimes punny), and have a nice even burn and scent profile. Their candle scents are also not overwhelming, which is a huge plus. (Sometimes I get headaches from B&BW candles cause they can be too strong.)

image found on shopevilqueen.com
Here are a couple of my favorite scents (ALL YEAR LONG):

This is the perfect candle when you’re in a cozy mood. (It’s also available in double-wick.)

I mean, the description, though.

This smells like fruit loops cereal and is AMAZING. (This is also a double-wick candle.)
(You can also find some of their previously released candles and descriptions via Evil Queen’s instagram @evilqueen)
I love these candles so much that once I’ve finished a jar, I usually clean it to reuse it, like so:
You can learn how to upcycle/recycle jars here.
My favorite thing about Evil Queen (aside from everything above) has to be their MONTHLY SUBSCRIPTION option.
It costs $24 monthly, and you get one special/exclusively curated candle delivered to your doorstep each month.

Here are a couple subscription candles that were my faves:

Pros
They smell amazing
They burn a long time
Adorable packaging
The wax burns evenly (no tunneling) as long as you keep your wick properly trimmed
They offer a monthly subscription candle for exclusive scents (that help you discover new scent profiles!)
You can earn points on all of your orders, which can be redeemed for rewards/coups
Cons
Typically only found online (though there are some small shops/boutiques that carry some!)
New/exclusive scents sell out quickly (but this isn’t really a bad problem to have for a small biz!)
You need to stock up on fave seasonal scents (because they’re only available for a limited time once released)
Price
$$
They offer sales a couple times a year, but you can also save 15% off your first order using this referral link: http://i.refs.cc/rVn6wcRA?smile_ref=eyJzbWlsZV9zb3VyY2UiOiJzbWlsZV91aSIsInNtaWxlX21lZGl1bSI6IiIsInNtaWxlX2NhbXBhaWduIjoicmVmZXJyYWxfcHJvZ3JhbSIsInNtaWxlX2N1c3RvbWVyX2lkIjoxNjE3ODI4MjZ9
You can order your own sassy Evil Queen candles via my referral link (saving you 15%!), or at full price (lol) via shopevilqueen.com
Price Guide

What I’m Reading Wednesday + GIVEAWAY (6)
I have a re-read and (finally) a new read to share with you all today!
What I’ve re-read:
The Duke with the Dragon Tattoo by Kerrigan Byrne
The bravest of heroes. The brashest of rebels. The boldest of lovers. These are the men who risk their hearts and their souls—for the passionate women who dare to love them…
He is known only as The Rook. A man with no name, no past, no memories. He awakens in a mass grave, a magnificent dragon tattoo on his muscled forearm the sole clue to his mysterious origins. His only hope for survival—and salvation—lies in the deep, fiery eyes of the beautiful stranger who finds him. Who nurses him back to health. And who calms the restless demons in his soul…
A LEGENDARY LOVE
Lorelei will never forget the night she rescued the broken dark angel in the woods, a devilishly handsome man who haunts her dreams to this day. Crippled as a child, she devoted herself to healing the poor tortured man. And when he left, he took a piece of her heart with him. Now, after all these years, The Rook has returned. Like a phantom, he sweeps back into her life and avenges those who wronged her. But can she trust a man who’s been branded a rebel, a thief, and a killer? And can she trust herself to resist him when he takes her in his arms?
What I read (and loved):
The Business of Blood by Kerrigan Byrne
London, 1890. Blood and death are Fiona Mahoney’s trade, and business, as they say, is booming.
Dying is the only thing people do with any regularity, and Fiona makes her indecorous living cleaning up after the corpses are carted away. Her childhood best friend, Mary, was the last known victim of Jack the Ripper. It’s been two years since Fiona scrubbed Mary’s blood from the floorboards, and London is no longer buzzing about the Ripper, but Fiona hasn’t forgotten.
And she hasn’t stopped searching for Jack.
When she’s called to a murder in the middle of the night, Fiona finds a victim mutilated in an eerily similar fashion to those of the Ripper, and only a few doors down from Mary’s old home. The relentless, overbearing, and irritatingly handsome Inspector Grayson Croft warns her away from the case. She might have listened, if she hadn’t found a clue in the blood. A clue that will lead her down a path from which there is no return. As a killer cuts a devastating swath through London, a letter written in blood arrives at her door, and it is only then that Fiona realizes just how perilous her endeavor is. For she has drawn the attention of an obsessive evil, and is no longer the hunter, but the prey. Fiona Mahoney is in the business of blood.
But she’s not the only one.
With intriguing twists, blood-chilling discoveries, and dazzling prose, USA Today Bestselling author Kerrigan Byrne shows that a woman’s work is never done, even when she is sleuthing out a serial killer.

MY LATEST OBSESSION (1): HAIR CARE PRODUCTS
I constantly—okay, every so often—get asked about what products I use, everything from hair stuff to makeup to home products, and I thought, hey, I have opinions no one asked for or really needs, so why not do a weekly post about my newest obsession and random purchase fails? And then I thought, Stephanie is as opinionated as me about products, and she has some different tastes than me. For example, I think McDonalds tea is great and Steph is the type to know the different types of craft tea… is craft tea even a thing? I have no idea, but you get what I mean. So, I’ll share something I’m obsessed with, maybe something similar that failed, and so will Steph. None of these posts will be sponsored. I wish I got paid for my rather useless opinions.
My very first obsession the freaking holy grail of hair care, Olaplex No. 3 Hair Perfector. I don’t care what anyone claims. FIGHT ME.
I’m oh-so obsessed with Olaplex No. 3 Hair Perfector
So, if you’re like me and either super lazy, busy, forgetful or just don’t feel like booking regular hair appointments, then your split ends probably have split ends. Mine do. And look, you should probably get your hair trimmed BUT I learned of this product called Olaplex No. 3 Hair Perfector through Andrea Joan, who was getting her hair lightened, and the salon used it after basically making her a wee blonde little baby. I decided to give it a whirl, ordered it because I was procrastinating instead of writing. When it came, holy crap.
Pros
Super shiny. I could be a cheesy girl in a Facebook ad video (which I did do, because YOLO)
Dead ends look less noticeable, which hey, that’s a marked improvement
Peeples, it detangled my fine, striggy ass hair. And if you have a lot of fine hair, you know that stuff tangles if someone breathes in your direction. When a deep treatment that you shampoo out STILL detangles your hair, you know you got the good stuff
Cons
None
Price
$$$
It’s not the cheapest and it’s not the most expensive, but it is well worth the dollars.
Notes:
I also ordered their shampoo and conditioner, which is also great, along with the No. 7 Bonding Oil which is the bomb diggity.
I’m ordering the No. 6 Bond Smoother to see what that does. I imagine it will make me look 20 years younger and give me near orgasmic feelings whenever I touch my hair after using it
Here’s a before and after from the Olaplex website:
You can buy it and check out customer reviews here.
* Also, word on the street is that the cheaper/drug store dupe for this product is OGX Restoring + Bonding Plex Leave-In Treatment, which is currently $8.99 via Ulta.com.
Well, this was a freaking fail: Function of Beauty
A recent hair care fail purchase for me was Function, a customizable shampoo and conditioner product. I blame freaking Facebook ads for this one. It kept popping up over and over, and I thought, what the hell, why not try a custom-made shampoo/condition where you get to label your bottles whatever you want?
Cons:
Quality was basic. I tried, I think strengthening and shine and repair or something. My hair felt a little dry afterward, which is concerning. Whenever you switch up shampoos/conditioner, you normally notice a marked improvement right off the bat. That would be a nope here.
One of the cool things was that you can customize the labels on your bottles. I chose Llama for Shampoo and Conditioner, because I’m a dork like that. I was most excited about this part. Guess what. Neither bottle was labeled.
Two of the three pumps were broken. Le sigh.
Pros
Smells amazing.
Leave In Conditioner is great. That’s a keeper for me
Price
$$$
For the cost and basic cheap, drugstore brand quality? It’s a pass, but for $49 you can get both the shampoo and conditioner
Hey, Function could be great for someone else. I did admit earlier than my dead ends have dead ends, so don’t let me sway you like the damn Facebook ad swayed me.
You can get your own and see customer reviews here.
STEPH’S CURRENT HAIR CARE OBSESSION:
So for those of you who don’t know me, I am half-Brazilian and half-African American. This means that for the entirety of my life, I’ve struggled finding the right hair products for my natural, multi-ethnical curly hair.
Up until about two years ago, I was primarily blowdrying/straightening my hair because it was easier treating and styling it straight–but as I’m sure my curly-haired peeps can relate to, this was subjecting my follicles to damage and stress. So, under the guidance of my hair stylist, I decided to work on keeping my hair curly/natural 100% of the time. Which meant hundreds of dollars and plenty of tears, but I think I’ve finally found the perfect hair product combo for my curlies: Pattern Hair Care!
Owned by actress Tracee Ellis Ross (daughter of singer Diana Ross), this brand shows love to ALL curlies and coilies, and the hair products can be customized to work for your curl pattern, type, and texture.
You can read all about the brand and launch here: https://www.elle.com/beauty/hair/a28897778/tracee-ellis-ross-pattern-hair-care-line/.
There are many products in that line, so to keep things short and sweet, I’ll spotlight my two favorite products from Pattern Beauty I’ve used: The Leave-in Conditioner (and the Shower Brush).
Pros:
Can be used on it’s own; you don’t even need to put it in freshly-washed hair.
Doesn’t dry hard/flakey
Adds great definition (and for reference, my curls are 3B/4C curls as seen in the curl-guide)
FOR ONCE, you actually don’t need to use half a bottle of product to get desired results
Cons:
I’m not too keen on the smell (it doesn’t stink, though)
It’s usually sold out online because it really is the best product of their line, IMO
Price:
$$-$$$ depending on size.
The travel sizes are cheaper if you want to just give it a try without the price commitment.
Also highly suggested: USE THIS WITH THE PATTERN BEAUTY SHOWER BRUSH.
It’s $17, but IT IS MAGIC. It’s great to use when evenly distributing product into your wet hair, and doesn’t pull/damage your hair.
Here are a couple of photos of my hair’s love affair with Pattern Beauty:
You can purchase and read reviews about Pattern Beauty products here.
* And P.S., a great grocery store dupe for this leave-in is Aussie Paraben-Free Detangling Milk with Coconut Miracle Curls For Curly Hair which is around $5 and can be found at your local drug store (or via target here).
Price Guide
$ – Under $10
$$ – $11-$30
$$$ – $31-$60
$$$$ – $60 – $100
$$$$$ (i.e. what the fuck, how much is this?) – over $100

What I’m Reading Wednesday + GIVEAWAY
I’m currently in the NANOWRIMO cave, so I haven’t had much time to read new books, but I wanted to share what I’m re-reading/reading now:
The Duke by Kerrigan Byrne
He is noble, notorious, and takes no prisoners…
Strong as a Viking. Handsome as Adonis. Rich as Midas. Collin “Cole” Talmage, Duke of Trewyth, is the stuff that legends are made of. He’s the English Empire’s golden son–until fate has its way with him. Cole’s family is killed and his closest comrade betrays him on the battlefield, leaving him gravely injured. But Cole is not one to dwell on misfortune. He is a man of duty, honor–and desire. And now he’s ready for the fight of his lifetime…
Imogen Pritchard is a beautiful lass who works in a hospital by day and as a serving maid at night. Years ago, when she was young and penniless, she ended up spending a scandalous night with Cole, whose tormented soul was matched only by his earth-shattering passion. Imogen entered a marriage of convenience―one that left her a wealthy widow―but she never forgot Cole. Now that her long-lost lover has turned up in her hospital, injured and with no memory of her, Imogen is torn: Is it a blessing or a curse that their past remains a secret to Cole, even as his new passion for her leaves him wanting to protect and possess her…at all costs, in The Duke, the next Victorian Rebels novel by Kerrigan Byrne.

#1 New York Times bestselling author J.R. Ward is heating things up this winter with a holiday novel featuring some of her most iconic Black Dagger Brothers.

But when he meets a mysterious female, he becomes convinced his true love has been reincarnated. Is he right? Or has his grief created a disastrous delusion?
Therese has come to Caldwell to escape a rift with her bloodline. The revelation that she was adopted and not born into her family shakes the foundations of her identity, and she is determined to make it on her own.
