Hi Loretta,
I don’t know if I have a preference because I love them both but I must say, that verse comes much easier to me than prose. In fact, some pieces that started off with being prose, I changed it to verse because it flowed better. When I have an idea for a poem, I usually can have it done (with editing, marinating, and editing) for about two weeks but with prose during the same process it takes months to have a finished product or even years.

Thanks Day for the question.

Yes. My Aunt Mary was the one person that influenced me in writing poetry and learning about Maya Angelou. I love telling the story of how when I was 12, while sitting in her kitchen under a short circuit hairdryer, we talked about Maya Angelou and my aunt read a poem she wrote about my father (her brother), who had recently passed away. I sat there scared to move or I would get a shock. But, besides that fear, when my aunt read the poem; you could hear the compassion in her voice. I realized how important my father was to other people. I admired my aunt for sharing her feelings to me. My aunt showed me how to express my feelings with the written word.

Reflections: Redesign Your Mind: The Breakthrough Program for Real Cognitive Change by Eric Maisel, PhD

For years, I’ve been smothered with internal negative self-talk derived from external influences such as conflicts, tragedies, and other traumatic experiences. The suffocation of the negative self-talk enabled me to live a life full of anger and insecurity. I know I am not alone in this debilitating conversation. All of us have some negative self-talk that inhibits the true person we are meant to Read more of this blog post »

“Creativity is your umbilical cord to happiness”
Sandra Proto

“Growing up, I always had a journal – whether it was a marble composition book or a pretty hardcover journal—I reached out to it and wrote through the tears, anger, hurt feelings, and the bewilderment of life. The journal became my Dear Abby, Dr. Joyce Brothers, and on occasion my Dr. Ruth(Ah, the curiosity of sexuality).”
Sandra Proto

“Blackberry Beauty has all eyes on her.
She slowly raises her head and smiles at the onlookers.
Her walk is still graceful and delicate.
Her voice is still a whisper.

She says, “I am the beautiful Blackberry. I was made to be way too dark because I am ripe. My beauty comes from my blackberry skin and your ugliness comes from your unripe ones.”
Sandra Proto, Wrapped up in life with omniscient eyes
