Hulu to Begin Password Sharing Crackdown, Mirrors Disney+ Tactics

Of all the streaming shenanigans that have come to pass in recent history, password-sharing crackdowns seem like the most unfair (and, sadly, one of the most effective) tactics of them all. Yes, someone has to pay in order for streaming services to survive. But it does feel especially discordant to limit the use of a digital product in such a way. After all, no one would prevent you from mailing a friend a DVD you purchased. But password-sharing crackdowns seem to be the new horizon for streamers. Netflix first began the sharing limitations, and since then, Disney+ added language to set up a similar restriction. Now, Disney-owned Hulu has also taken the first measures for a password-sharing crackdown of its own, following in the footsteps of the other streamers.

hulu the bear main character is stressedHulu

The Hollywood Reporter revealed that Hulu sent an email to its subscribers warning them of the password-sharing crackdown to come. The email noted, “Unless otherwise permitted by your Service Tier, you may not share your subscription outside of your household… ‘Household’ means the collection of devices associated with your primary personal residence that are used by the individuals who reside therein.”

Additionally, Hulu cautioned, “We may, in our sole discretion, analyze the use of your account to determine compliance with this Agreement. If we determine, in our sole discretion, that you have violated this Agreement, we may limit or terminate access to the Service and/or take any other steps as permitted by this Agreement.”

Sigh! This Hulu password-sharing crackdown language feels very similar to what Disney+ shared with its subscribers in September of 2023. It doesn’t seem like Disney+ has offered any further action or explication of the message after the terms of agreement change, though. But Disney sending this notice to Hulu’s users seems to hint at an escalation across platforms. The Hulu password-sharing crackdown will go into effect on March 14.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Disney CEO Bob Iger shared last summer, “We’re actively exploring ways to address account sharing and the best options for paying subscribers to share their accounts with friends and family… we will roll out tactics to drive monetization sometime in 2024.” We guess we will see how harshly Hulu and Disney+ legislate password sharing in the coming months.

NIGHTLIGHT Podcast Crafts Chilling Audio Horror Stories by Black Creatives

Are you afraid of the dark? At some point in our lives, the answer to that question is an affirmative yet nervous nod. We have all feared a shadow or two, right? Even if you’re comfortable with dark spaces as an adult, you probably slept with a night light as a kid. That faint and comforting glow was a security blanket to cast away all trepidation… especially if you had just watched something super scary. This small light fixture inspired the name of NIGHTLIGHT, a podcast that’s a vital addition to the horror fiction landscape. Created by Tonia Ransom, NIGHTLIGHT features a hefty catalog of stories written and performed by Black creatives that will make you want to keep the lights on at night.

Following this unique creative path was Tonia’s destiny. She fell in love with horror as a kid, watching scary movies with her older brothers to connect with them. “I was about nine years old and really afraid of being afraid,” recalls Ransom. “I didn’t want to jump or do anything like that! If anybody has brothers, you know that they’re ruthless and they’ll never let you live anything down. So, I knew that I had to be brave.”

Tonia soon began penning her own frightening tales. She recalls one early—and hilarious—experience that got her hooked on the euphoria of emotionally moving others with her words.

“I fell in love with writing horror when I had this school assignment in second grade,” said Ransom. “We were tasked with writing a book and creating the book. We had to get a chipboard and contact paper to actually construct it and we had to write and illustrate the book. I wrote Michael Myers fanfiction, complete with bloody knives and corpses… and I was known as a really good kid in school. My teacher, of course, called my parents. I was thinking it was because she loved the story but, once I got to middle school, I was like, ‘Wait a minute.’ She was probably worried about me and scared for a different reason.”

Like most of us, her fanfiction adventures didn’t translate into a career… at least, not initially. Tonia went into marketing and web development; however, she never lost her passion for storytelling. Internet radio stations helped her maintain her focus during long workdays. Her appreciation for audio stories sparked an idea that wouldn’t leave her alone, even though she kept putting it off.

“I was a web developer, not a writer at that point, and definitely not working in radio or anything like that,” she notes. “So, I knew that it was going to be almost impossible for me to go to anyone and be like, ‘Hey, let me write a show for you, and it’ll be super successful, and it’ll be great!’ …A couple of years later, podcasts became a thing and I thought, ‘Okay, wow. Well, now I can do this.’ But I kept putting it off… One day I was like, ‘You know what? I keep making excuses. And this is never going to happen if I keep waiting for the “right time” to do this.”

This is where NIGHTLIGHT’s story begins. Tonia didn’t have a platform on social media nor followers who were necessarily her niche market. So, she turned to crowdfunding and using her marketing prowess to get others on board. Obviously, the idea of a Black-led audio horror podcast resonated with people because she quickly raised thousands of dollars. And the rest, as they say, is history. NIGHTLIGHT launched in 2018 and has six seasons of sinister stories for your podcast listening pleasure.

Each episode may only run 30-40 minutes; however, it takes up to 20-30 hours—and hundreds of dollars—to produce them. Tonia initially estimated that an episode would take five hours to complete but that wasn’t the case. She begins with reading submissions or sourcing stories for consideration. Upon acceptance, there’s the business of negotiating contracts, finding the right narrator, and, of course, the recording process. Thankfully, Tonia now has a team to help her with all these working parts.

Then, it is on to quality control to see if there is a need for pickups, which are retakes if a person flubs a word or misses something else. Sometimes, the vocals need to be scarier… almost frightening enough that the listener will have nightmares. Finally, there are sound effects and music to amp up the tension. Once that’s complete, a new NIGHTLIGHT story is ready for the podcast masses to hear.

Every person involved, from the writers to the narrators, receives compensation for their talent and hard work. This is why NIGHTLIGHT continues to seek support from sponsors and Patreon memberships. The podcast provides fantastic entertainment for horror lovers as well as an established platform for new writers to break their material. Opening the door for marginalized creatives is something that we dig at Nerdist and is also close to Tonia’s heart.

“I think any marginalized group has to have the opportunity to tell their stories and have their stories heard,” Tonia states. “It creates this atmosphere where it’s really hard to hate a group of people once you’re exposed to their perspective. People don’t like being preached to. They don’t like being told, ‘Oh, well, Black people aren’t this, and you shouldn’t think that,’ and that sort of thing. But people do love listening to stories. You can weave in the things that you want to say in terms of acceptance and sharing your own struggles, challenges, and victories for your culture and the things that you love about your culture… stories are a great way to connect people and fight all forms of bigotry.”

NIGHTLIGHT is gearing up for its seventh season on February 8. In the meantime, you can check out the podcast, visit its Instagram, Facebook, and BlueSky pages, or lend your support via Patreon.

STRANGER THINGS 5 Will Not Release Until 2025

It feels like Stranger Things has been a phenomenon for as long as we can remember. But now, our favorite party is all grown up, and the time has come for the series’ last chapter. Stranger Things 5 will be the Netflix hit’s final season, but we have no doubt that these concluding episodes will have a ton of meat on their bones.

Although Stranger Things 5 recently began production, it looks like we’ll have to wait another year for to see the series come to life. Netflix recently released its 2024 slate and confirmed that Stranger Things 5 will not release in 2024. Instead, it looks like the fifth and final season of the show will arrive in 2025. We guess there’s a certain symmetry to that.

Strangers Things 5 begins productionNetflix

So, let’s roll for initiative and head back to Hawkins one more time. Here’s everything we know about Stranger Things 5.

Stranger Things 5‘s Ploteverything we know about Stranger things 5Netflix

Stranger Things 4 ended with a bang as the Upside Down erupted right into the middle of Hawkins. Although everyone came together to try to stop Vecna, the villainous monster, who is actually One, who is actually Henry Creel, succeeded in merging his evil world with the reality every day people inhabit. The party managed to injure Vecna and seemingly save Max from his clutches. However, the fallout remained apocalyptic. In the final moments of the season, the Upside Down’s ash arrives to cover everything, and a full-out war with the monstrous creatures of the dark world seems imminent.

Vecna, mid-transformation, looks upNetflix

While we don’t know much about Stranger Things 5 yet, we assume it will have just a little to do with how Stranger Things 4 ended. The Duffer brothers haven’t provided many plot specifics but have offered several teases about Stranger Things 5. Among other bits, they shared that the action will remain centered in Hawkins and that likely we’ll see an eight-episode season. Additionally, the Duffers have noted that Will Byers will take a central role in the final season.

Finally, the series’ creators describe Stranger Things 5 as follows, “Five, the way we see it, is kind of a culmination of all the seasons, so it’s sort of got a little bit from each… Whereas before, each season was so [distinct]… [Season] 3 is our big summer blockbuster season with big monsters, and [Season] 4 was the psychological horror. Five, the way we see it, is kind of a culmination of all the seasons, so it’s sort of got a little bit from each. I think that what we’re trying to do is go back to the beginning a little bit, in sort of the tone of 1.” Or, “Season 5 is like if season 1 and 4 had a baby. And then that baby was injected with steroids.” Make of that what you will.

Behind the Scenes

Of course, the Duffer brothers, Matt and Ross Duffer, will once again take the helm of Stranger Things 5. Additionally, long-time Stranger Things director Shawn Levy will return to direct at least one episode of the season. Superstitiously, the Deadpool 3 director likes to take on episodes three and four if he can.

All our favorite characters and actors will be back for Stranger Things 5. We know for sure that Joyce Byers, Jim Hopper, Mike Wheeler, Nancy Wheeler, Jonathan Byers, Eleven, Lucas Sinclair, Dustin Henderson, Will Byers, Karen Wheeler, Stever Harrington, Robin Buckley, and Murray Bauman will be back. (And with them, their respective actors.) Sadie Sink’s Max survived season four and should return with the rest. We, of course, are still holding the torch for the surprise resurrection of Joseph Quinn’s Eddie Munson. Stranger Things takes place in a supernatural world, after all. And it just wouldn’t be a good season without one Erica Sinclair.

When it comes to new faces, we know that Linda Hamilton has joined the cast of Stranger Things 5. But her role remains a secret for now.

Eddie Murphy’s BEVERLY HILLS COP: AXEL F Sets July Release Date, Shares Trailer

Anyone who was around in the ‘80s and ‘90s knows that Eddie Murphy absolutely dominated those decades. Long before Kevin Hart’s reign as both a comedian and actor, Murphy starred in a slate of iconic films including Harlem Nights and Coming to America. We knew he could be funny but it was the Beverly Hills Cop series that revealed his action chops, too. The wise-cracking and chaotic Axel Foley’s adventures as he brought his Detroit vibes to Beverly Hills spanned over three films, with Beverly Hills Cop III releasing in 1994. At that point, it seemed this story was over for good with Axel settling into a relationship with Janice. Thirty years later, Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F will put him back in the streets once again, and, if the trailer is any indication, he’s still a delightful mess.

Here’s the plot synopsis for Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F to better sum up the trailer:

Detective Axel Foley (Eddie Murphy) is back on the beat in Beverly Hills. After his daughter’s life is threatened, she (Taylour Paige) and Foley team up with a new partner (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) and old pals Billy Rosewood (Judge Reinhold) and John Taggart (John Ashton) to turn up the heat and uncover a conspiracy.

The gang’s all back together, indeed. Also, the inclusion of Biggie Smalls’ “Going Back to Cali” in the clip is a perfect touch. This movie certainly hits the nostalgia button and, to be honest, we could all use some comedic relief in general.

Eddie Murphy holds gun up as Axel Foley in Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F trailerNetflixWhat Is the Release Date for Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F?

The trailer for Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F teased a summer 2024 release, and now, in Netflix has confirmed that that movie will release on July 3, 2024. Interestingly, there’s no rating for this film yet either, but we are pretty sure it will get a mature rating. Axel Foley is a lot of things but “for the children” is not one of them.

Stylish GODZILLA X KONG Funko Pop Godzilla Channels Barbie Pink

Don’t even let anyone tell you that Godzilla is not a giant atomic lizard with his finger (claw?) on the pulse of what’s trendy. Because no sooner did Barbie become a cinematic sensation, than we soon saw the trailer for Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. And in that peek at the latest Monsterverse movie, Godzilla was wielding the power of some very pink atomic fire. We suspect that Godzilla knew Barbie was “the moment,” and wanted in on that hot pink style. And when we say “hot” pink, we’re being quite literal. You can now buy a Funko Pop! figure of this “Barbiezilla,” a name that we are unofficially coining right now. Pre-orders are already available for this Amazon exclusive.

You can check out the first images of the new Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire Funko Pop! vinyl figure figure above. You can also read the official description for the new Monsterverse toy below:

Clear the way for a colossal adventure! Bring along this exclusive Pop! Godzilla (Sleeping) to take on the latest threat raging in the Monsterverse. Godzilla and King Kong, two Titans, will face a challenge that looms larger than ever before. Capture your favorite movie moments from Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire and build your Pop! Movies set. This new vinyl figure is approximately 2.2-inches tall.

Godzilla was originally born out of Japanese cultural anxiety over nuclear power after the bombings of Nagasaki and Hiroshima during WWII. So we think that Godzilla was the original “Barbenheimer” anyway. So is Kong the Ken of the Monsterverse? Does he only have meaning if Godzilla is looking at him with those beady, judgmental eyes? Also, does that mean Kong is going to have a song called “Just Kong” in the spirit of Ken? We sure hope so. Because we kind of want to hear it.

The Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire Funko Pop! releases on March 11, and the film hits theaters on March 29.

So Much Is Happening in DEATH STRANDING 2’s Trailer

The world of Hideo Kojima’s Death Stranding has seen a lot of activity these last few months. The first game premiered on PlayStation 4 in 2019. We recently learned a live-action movie adaptation from A24 and Kojima Productions is in the works. And, perhaps most importantly, a sequel to the game is on the horizon. Kojima announced it at The Game Awards in 2022. In its first State of Play for 2024, Sony revealed a new Death Stranding 2 trailer full of gameplay and story hints. We also learned the game’s full title, Death Stranding 2: On the Beach.

A number of wild and weird things happen in the trailer. It shows off new locations, the return of the villainous Higgs, and a talking puppet thing? The nine minutes of footage don’t make a ton of sense, but that’s on par for Death Stranding. It’s an odd world, true, but it’s a world many fans are anxious to return to.

Death Stranding 2‘s premise is as follows:

Embark on an inspiring mission of human connection beyond the UCA. Sam—with companions by his side—sets out on a new journey to save humanity from extinction. Join them as they traverse a world beset by otherworldly enemies, obstacles and a haunting question: should we have connected?

The game sees Norman Reedus, Léa Seydoux, and Troy Baker return to Hideo Kojima’s universe. They will be joined by Elle Fanning, Shioli Kutsuna, and Academy Award-winning film director George Miller.

Death Stranding 2: On the Beach will arrive in 2025 on the PlayStation 5.

Leonard Nimoy Lobbied to Play Lestat in INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE in 1977

Anne Rice’s seminal Gothic horror novel, Interview with the Vampire, was published in 1976. Almost immediately, Hollywood optioned the rights, hoping to turn it into a film. However, no studio made it for 18 years for various complicated reasons. But an interesting factoid that few ever knew has recently resurfaced. In a 1977 New York Times profile on Star Trek legend Leonard Nimoy, he revealed he was lobbying hard to snag the role of Lestat, the undead French aristocrat who becomes a vampire. The man who played Spock nearly traded in pointed ears for pointed fangs. Here’s what Nimoy told the Times, via The Trekker Scrapbook:

so are we not gonna talk about nimoy lobbying to play lestat in 1977 or pic.twitter.com/ZEKwOVW8N6

— catherine (@hesbianspock) January 31, 2024

Paramount owns the movie rights, and I want that role. I had my agent call, I had my publisher call, telephone calls and memos have been going back and forth, and you would think someone at the studio would put two and two together and hire me. I could create interest. I am right for that vampire.

Leonard Nimoy as Spock in 1979's Star Trek: The Motion Picture (L) and Tom Cruise as the Vampire Lestat in 1994's Interview with the Vampire (R)Paramount Pictures/Warner Bros.

It’s hard to imagine Nimoy in the part of the androgynous, French vampire. But it’s entirely possible that he viewed the part as the chance to play an outright villain. When Interview with the Vampire was first published, Lestat was undoubtedly the bad guy in the story. He wouldn’t become the “sexy antihero” until book two, The Vampire Lestat, where he took center stage. But that came out nine years later. Maybe he could have pulled it off? After all, no one thought Tom Cruise could play Lestat, including Anne Rice herself. When she saw his performance, she issued a public apology. Sometimes casting against type works. Especially with the right hair and makeup people. (Or in Michael Keaton’s case as Batman, the right rubber muscle suit).

We will say that Nimoy would have played a terrific Louis, the novel’s protagonist vampire. And we know this because for several years, Leonard Nimoy played Spock on Star Trek as a character who struggled with integrating both halves of his personality, the Vulcan and the human. Louis similarly struggled with his human and vampire duality. Honestly, Nimoy would have nailed that particular role. All we know is we want a little peek into the alternate universe where Nimoy got to play Lestat—if only to see him in a blonde wig and wearing billowy pirate shirts.

Denis Villeneuve Reaffirms He Will Not Make More DUNE Movies After DUNE 3 (If It Happens)

After a very long wait, Dune hit theaters in the fall of 2021 to both rave reviews and big box office. This was despite bowing on HBO Max at the same time as its theatrical debut. But Dune was really just Dune: Part One. The first film only covered the first half of Frank Herbert’s epic 1965 novel. Luckily, the rest of the story is on the way. Dune: Part Two was officially announced on October 26, 2021.

Although we have no news of Dune 3, director Denis Villeneuve is sticking with his guns. The director has said for a long time that he will not make any more Dune movies after a potential Dune 3. Dune: Messiah is the last book Villeneuve will adapt and the last Dune movie he’ll make, even if the Dune franchise continues. He notes to Time, “’Dune Messiah’ should be the last ‘Dune’ movie for me.” The publication notes that other directors may take over. But, of course, anything beyond Dune: Part Two remains in the hypothetical stage.

Here’s everything else we know so far about Dune: Part Two.

TitleChani holds Paul's face in her hands in the Dune: Part Two trailer.Warner Bros/Legendary

The official name of the movie is Dune: Part Two.

Dune: Part Two‘s Plot

The official plot synopsis from Warner Bros. and Legendary for Dune: Part Two reads as follows:

This follow-up film will explore the mythic journey of Paul Atreides as he unites with Chani and the Fremen while on a warpath of revenge against the conspirators who destroyed his family. Facing a choice between the love of his life and the fate of the known universe, he endeavors to prevent a terrible future only he can foresee.

If you’re a fan of Frank Herbert’s Dune, this all sounds like a pretty faithful adaptation of the second half of his novel. And unlike David Lynch’s 1984 version of Dune, this packed second half will now have time to breathe. And who knows? Maybe we’ll see elements of the later Dune novels pop up a wee bit early.

For now, we can enjoy Dune: Part Two‘s first trailer, which highlight a crucial book scene: Paul riding on a sandworm.

The second trailer for the film shows more of Paul and Chani and the Fremen’s fight.

The chief takeaway is that Dune: Part Two is both a love story and a war movie, and we can expect both parts to shine.

Dune: Part Two‘s Cast

Almost the entire original cast from Dune is back for Dune: Part Two. At least if their character survived, that is. This includes Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreides, the “Kwisatz Haderach,” and Zendaya as his Fremen paramour Chani. Javier Bardem also returns as Chani’s father, Fremen leader Stilgar. Paul’s very pregnant mother Lady Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson) also returns for Dune: Part Two. Josh Brolin is back as Paul’s mentor Gurney Halleck, as is Stephen McKinley Henderson as Thufir Hawat, the loyal Mentat to House Atreides.

Stellan Skarsgård reprises his role as the sadistic Baron Harkonnen, as does Dave Bautista as the Baron’s loyal lackey and nephew Glossu Rabban. Charlotte Rampling’s character, the Bene Gesserit Reverend Mother, is also slated to return. New cast members include Florence Pugh (Princess Irulan) Austin Butler (Feyd Rautha), and Christopher Walken (Emperor Shadddam IV). They are joined by Léa Seydoux (Lady Margot) and Souheila Yacoub as the Fremen warrior Shishakli.

Of course, certain major characters died in the first film, and are not scheduled to appear in Dune: Part Two. These include Jason Momoa as Duncan Idaho and Oscar Isaac as Duke Leto Atreides. But there could be surprise flashbacks. So don’t count them all out just yet. We may yet see them on the sands of Arrakis. Most recently, Deadline reported Tim Blake Nelson joined the cast in an unknown role.

Just as he was for Dune, director Denis Villeneuve is back behind the camera for Dune: Part Two. Jon Spaihts wrote the script for the second chapter of the story. Hans Zimmer also returned to score the sequel.

Dune: Part Two‘s Release Date

Dune: Part Two hits theaters on March 1, 2024. It will release in IMAX 70 mm as well as in IMAX and normal theatrical formats.

SUICIDE SQUAD: KILL THE JUSTICE LEAGUE Isn’t Kevin Conroy’s Last Batman Performance

For an entire generation, actor Kevin Conroy was Batman. For 30 years, Conroy played the iconic character in Batman: The Animated Series, its spinoffs, the Arkham games, and multiple films. When he passed away in 2022, we knew we’d at least one more appearance by Conroy as Batman. Conroy recorded for . This was ultimately revealed as part of the Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League game. According to IGN though, Conroy reportedly had recorded at least two other Batman roles before his death. Apparently, they are not for games, but for his original home for Batman, in animation.

Batman in Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League game, and the Dark Knight in Batman: The Animated Series, both voiced by Kevin Conroy.Rocksteady/Warner Bros. Animation

According to the original report, one of these appearances will be in the upcoming Batman: Caped Crusader animated series. Bruce Timm and Ed Brubaker developed this show, originally meant for Max, but now headed to Prime Video. It’s unlikely Conroy is voicing Batman in that show and more likely that it’s a guest appearance. In 2008’s Batman: The Brave and the Bold, he once played Thomas Wayne. It could be something like that. That said, DC hasn’t announced the voice actor for Batman in the new series.

Various iterations of DC Comics characters from decades of animated series and films. Warner Bros. Animation

The other reported appearance would be as the original version of the character he played in Batman: The Animated Series (and later, Batman Beyond and Justice League Unlimited). It’s said that Conroy would voice that version of Batman in the animated film Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths Part 3. The first part of this animated trilogy just came out, and it’s putting an end to the so-called “Tomorrowverse” of animated DC films. But fans have speculated the finale might include heroes from various DC animated series from across the decades, thus, making it truly seem “infinite.” If DC included the DCAU Dark Knight too, it would be an incredible swan song to Conroy’s Batman legacy. Here’s hoping that’s the case.
