Disney+ Sets Password Sharing Crackdown to Begin in June

What a shock. After Netflix’s extended password-sharing crackdowns proved to be unfortunately successful, Disney+ has decided this is a good time to start a password-sharing crackdown of its own. Actually, we aren’t surprised. It seems like the new streaming playbook includes password-sharing limitations right alongside price increases and ad-supported tiers. Disney+ had previously indicated such a password-sharing crackdown was on the horizon earlier in the year. And now it looks like it’s finally arrived.

Most recently, CEO Bob Iger shared that Disney was feeling “quite bullish about” Disney+’s password sharing crackdown. He noted on an earnings call that Disney was feeling bolsetered by the success of Netflix’s password sharing crackdown. Iger said, “Obviously, we’re heartened by the results that Netflix has delivered in their password-sharing initiative and believe that will be one of the contributors to growth, as [CFO Hugh Johnston] noted going forward.”

Here’s what we know about Disney+’s password-sharing crackdown efforts so far.

Disney+ Will Start Its Password Sharing Crackdown This Summer

At an earnings call that took place in February 2024, Disney shared more details about its planned password-sharing crackdown for Disney+ users. According to The Verge,  Disney’s Chief Financial Officer Hugh Johnston noted that Disney+ accounts “suspected of improper sharing” will be notified that different users will need to make different accounts. Disney+ will also follow in Netflix’s footsteps, allowing users to add people outside of their household to their accounts for an additional fee. That fee currently remains unknown.

Angry HadesDisney

In full, Johnston’s quote about Disney+’s password-sharing crackdown reads, “As it relates to the opportunity we see on paid sharing, beginning this summer, Disney Plus accounts suspected of improper sharing will be presented with new capabilities to allow their borrowers to start their own subscription… Later this calender year, account holders who want to allow access to individuals from outside their household and will be able to add them to their accounts for an additional fee.”

Johnston further noted, “Paid sharing is an opportunity for us,” Johnston added. “It’s one that our competitor is obviously taking advantage of, and one that sits in front of us … We’ve got some very specific actions that we’re taking in the next couple of months.” Doesn’t that just make your blood boil?

As mentioned in Johnston’s quote, the Disney+ password-sharing crackdown will arrive in the summer of 2024. Bob Iger recently expanded on this timeline, revealing that the crackdown will begin in “just a few countries in a few markets” but will then expand to all subscribers in September.

Disney+ Notifies Users of Password Sharing CrackdownThanos, the Marvel Studios

Disney+ first revealed its crackdown intentions in Canada late last year. According to The Verge, Disney+ sent an email to subscribers in Canada alerting them that password-sharing was on notice in September of 2023. The email noted, “We’re implementing restrictions on your ability to share your account or login credentials outside of your household.” Although Disney+ did not go too deeply into detail about what its password-sharing crackdown would look like, it feels like the streamer is emulating Netflix’s version. In fact, Disney+ even references the idea of “households,” a term Netflix created so it could enforce who could and could not use one Netflix account.

In the meanwhile, Disney has also given a similar notice to Hulu users in the United States.

Changes to Disney+’s User Agreement in Canada

In the case of Disney+, an updated Help Center page notes, “You may not share your subscription outside of your household.” Additionally, a new “account sharing” heading now appears in Candian subscribers’ user agreements. As shared by MobileSyrup, the section includes the following information:

Unless otherwise permitted by your Service Tier, you may not share your subscription outside of your household. “Household” means the collection of devices associated with your primary personal residence that are used by the individuals who reside therein. Additional usage rules may apply for certain Service Tiers.

We may, in our sole discretion, analyze the use of your account to determine compliance with this Agreement. If we determine that you have violated this Agreement, we may limit or terminate access to the Service and/or take any other steps as permitted by this Agreement (including those set forth in Section 6 of this Agreement).

You will be responsible for any use of your account by your household, including compliance with this section.

It doesn’t seem all that likely that Disney+ would actually terminate a user for password-sharing, but now it can’t say it didn’t warn you.

When Will Disney+’s Password Sharing Crackdown Begin?Grand Admiral Thrawn (Lars Mikkelsen) in episode six of Ahsoka, "Far, Far Away."Lucasfilm

For most Canadian users, these changes in password-sharing policies went into effect on November 1. That corresponded with the launch of Disney+’s ad-supported tiers in Canada. While its not clear if Disney immediately moved to enforce the password policy, it is clearly making sure users know it intends to at some point.

As mentioned above, it looks like a wider password-sharing crackdown is coming to Disney+ in the summer of 2024. There is no word yet on how that will effect different regions or who will be hit first.

We guess we’ll see how seriously Disney+ will take this new initiative.

STAR WARS’ Ahmed Best (Rightfully) Defends Jar Jar Binks’ Motion-Capture Legacy

Last year marked the surprise return of Ahmed Best to the galaxy far, far away. Only, instead of playing Jar Jar Binks again, his kid’s game host Jedi Kelleran Beq became a canonical part of the franchise. A big canonical part, in fact. The Mandalorian revealed Beq was the hero who saved Grogu from the Jedi Temple during Order 66. It was a glorious moment for a lot of reasons. But just because he’s now an official Jedi doesn’t mean Best has forgotten about his original role. In a new interview he pointed out that without the technologically-advanced Jar Jar our own galaxy might never have seen Gollum, Thanos, or the Na’vi on the big screen.

Jar Jar Binks gives a thumbs upLucasfilm

In an interview with The New York Times, Best made the (100% correct) case for Jar Jar’s lasting legacy in motion picture history. Because while his goofy Gungan was much reviled during the prequel era, Best’s first-of-its-kind motion-capture performance changed Hollywood forever. Star Wars and Best created a new CGI template that has become a major tool in the industry.

“Jar Jar represents the possibility that whatever you got in your head, creatively, we can invent a future where this thing exists,” said Best. “Just because no one has done it before, doesn’t mean it can’t be done.” And to highlight what can be done Best highlighted the many iconic characters who have followed in his oversized shoes. He cited characters like the MCU’s Thanos and Hulk, The Lord of the Rings‘ Gollum, and Avatar‘s Na’vi.

“I was the signal for the rest of this art form,” said Best. That’s why even though Jar Jar resulted in Best taking some awful abuse, he is “proud of Jar Jar” and “proud to be a part of that.”

Star Wars fans, whether they love the character or not, should also be proud of his Gungan. He was more than a clumsy mess. He was also a pioneer.

TALES OF THE EMPIRE’s Diana Lee Inosanto and Meredith Salenger on Their Characters’ Choices

Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi put the emphasis on choice and how moments big and small shape someone’s path. That series of animated shorts showed us why Count Dooku decided to pursue the dark side and how Ahsoka Tano chose to return to the fight and battle the Empire. Star Wars: Tales of the Empire also tells a story of choices, in this case those of Morgan Elsbeth and Barriss Offee. The shorts reveal how their characters’ paths intersected with the Galactic Empire’s. We talked to Diana Lee Inosanto and Meredith Salenger about the return of their characters and the decisions they make.

[image error]Tales of the Empire – Morgan Elsbeth’s PastMorgan Elsbeth standing in front of a burning forest in Star Wars: Tales of the EmpireLucasfilm

“My anger gives me strength.”

From her first appearance in The Mandalorian, it seemed like Morgan Elsbeth was carrying a chip the size of the galaxy on her shoulder. A Nightsister without a clan, we saw her help Grand Admiral Thrawn bring the Great Mothers from Peridea to the known galaxy in Ahsoka. But Tales of the Empire shows Morgan’s past and the massacre she witnessed on Dathomir, including her mother’s death.

Inosanto, who also plays Morgan in live-action, says, “When I first read it, I loved so much that they were going to go into her origins because it wasn’t really clear if she had really truly witnessed what happened on Dathomir, although I assumed that she was likely there. But when I found out they were going to do this, just starting out the gates, and then how she would meet Thrawn and how they would form their alliance… I love that we get to see a little bit more Dathomir and Nightsister culture.”

She explains she particularly enjoyed seeing a little of Morgan’s relationship with her mother. “It just tore at me because you think about this—what a moment of chaos and that would shape Morgan for years to come,” Inosanto explains. “And to me, it makes sense that she would hold the armor of anger, I call it, and carry that forward. And that’s what gave her the strength to one day visualize with the help of the Great Mothers that her vision was really to try to restore Dathomir and particularly the Nightsister culture.”

What Morgan might be carrying with her is something Inosanto has considered over her years playing the character. Tales of the Empire brought it more sharply into focus. She wrote a journal about Morgan and what she saw to get in touch with Morgan’s pain and fear, which becomes almost like a weight. “You have to make it come through the character,” Inosanto says. “Then, at the end of the day, once you’re done, you let it go. And I even have, part of my process is I also have a soundtrack for Morgan. Because of the emotional content, whether I was on the set or even before walking in the recording room, I will listen to particular music that sets a tone and it has a certain mood, and that way it helps me trigger whatever it is that music triggers in my brain to stay in contact with that emotional content for Morgan.”

Morgan faces the New Republic envoy on Corvus in Tales of the EmpireLucasfilm

We see much of Morgan’s combat prowess in live-action, leveraging Inosanto’s martial arts talents. She says, “My martial arts training is really my heritage, it’s my culture. And I never thought that what dad gave me—my father’s Dan Inosanto and he’s a pretty well-known martial artist out there in the world, and my godfather’s the late Bruce Lee. My father has, like Dave Filoni with George Lucas, he’s always tried to carry the torch of my godfather’s teachings. I’m so lucky that I had this and that I can’t believe that I am now within my favorite universe, and I had the ability to share my heritage with the world through a character like Morgan.”

That all translated to animation. “I was so touched by [director] Steward Lee —my understanding is he oversaw the fight sequences in Tales of the Empire, and he had martial arts training. The team studied my martial arts on YouTube, my battle sequences on Mandalorian and Ahsoka, and they beautifully brought it together. And I see the homage to my godfather and my dad, so it’s quite surreal. They did it so beautifully and without mo-cap.”

Tales of the Empire – Barriss Offee Becomes an InquisitorBarriss Offee stands before a line of stormtroopers as she becomes an Inquisitor in the trailer for Star Wars: Tales of the EmpireLucasfilm

“It seems fear is not your ally, but your master.”

The last time we saw Barriss Offee in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, the former Jedi was in jail for bombing the Jedi Temple. She tried to frame Ahsoka, but the Republic eventually figured out Barriss was the real culprit. Tales of the Empire sees her take the opportunity to leave prison by joining the Empire’s Inquisitorius—a group working for Darth Vader to hunt Jedi who survived Order 66. Salenger thinks Barriss saw the opportunity to get out of her prison cell and took it. She says, “I think her time stewing in jail after she was incarcerated—she had time to stew on her actions and formulate what she really believes.”

Salenger felt thrilled to come back to the role of Barriss. The Jedi Padawan’s last appearance on screen was in 2013. She was more of a rule-follower than Ahsoka, which made sense with Barriss’ Master, Luminara Unduli, being far more level-headed than Anakin Skywalker. But Barriss fought against the hypocrisy of the Jedi; she didn’t agree with the Jedi being soldiers. Yet, she used violence to show her discontent. “I think her inner turmoil and anger and upset and frustration led her to do something that she typically wouldn’t have chosen to do,” Salenger says of Barriss’ actions towards the Jedi. “And at the beginning of Tales of the Empire, she’s presented with a choice, which is come join the Inquisitors. You either stay in jail for the rest of your life or you get killed, or you do what you have to do to survive. And I don’t think it was a choice that she wanted to make.”

“Ultimately, I mean in anyone in Star Wars, your choices that you make define your destiny. And you always have a choice. She has a choice. She could’ve stayed in prison and died, but there’s also a thing where you think you can get out of something. You can do something bad and perhaps affect change later,” Salenger continues.

Barriss Offee using the force in Tales of the Empire as part of the Inquisitor trialsLucasfilm

It doesn’t take long for Barriss to fully understand the path of an Inquisitor and that it comes with a cost. While Lyn, the Fourth Sister (seen in Obi-Wan Kenobi), seems to revel in the Inquisitor’s missions, Barriss can’t understand. Salenger says, “Barriss is presented with the same thing that Lyn was initially presented with. It’s so conflicting for her because she does have this moral center. She had it from the beginning. She was raised by the Jedi. She was given to them as a child to be trained and to have a thoughtfulness and a nobility to her, and a set of morals and an intense desire to do what’s right. That intense desire is… It’s just so conflicting for her to do things you don’t really want to do.”

Barriss comes to a fork in the road and decides to go on the run. She makes another choice, a choice to refocus towards the light. Salenger notes, “What I like most about Barris is that she actually feels. She’s so deep. She doesn’t want anyone to be hurting. She wants to change people’s perspective. She’s trying to change people’s perspective from the very beginning. When the Grand Inquisitor first makes her have to fight her fellow Jedi who’s been captured and she’s like, ‘We don’t have to do this.’ She’s always trying to get out of the thing that is not good. She’s always trying to do the right thing and then ultimately, it comes down to saving yourself.”

Star Wars: Tales of the Empire is streaming now on Disney+.

The DCU Superman’s New Costume Is Inspired by Key Parts of Kal-El’s Past

At last, we have our first look at David Corenswet as the Man of Steel, in a lovely costume image released to social media by Superman director and DCU lord James Gunn. In our first look at this Superman costume, we see it has plenty of influences from Kal-El’s 86-year history. These influences stem from comics costumes, as well as from other Superman media over the years. Let’s break it all down.

The “New 52” Superman CostumeJim Lee's DC Comics

The biggest influence on this new suit is Jim Lee’s 2011 update for DC’s “New 52” initiative. Lee gave Superman his most radical redesign in decades for that reboot. He gave Superman a raised collar for the first time, and added tons of piping and extra details to the suit itself. The red boots suddenly had new ridges on the side, and most famously, a red belt replaced the red trunks. The suit was always controversial, and the classic suit returned just a few years later. This new cinematic suit keeps the extra details, like the raised collar. Thankfully, the red trunks made a comeback, too.

The Muted Tones of Recent Live-Action Superman CostumesBrand Routh as Superman in Superman Returns (L) Henry Cavill in Man of Steel (Center) and Tyler Hoechlin in Superman and Lois (R)Warner Bros.

In the comics, and in most outside of comic books media, Clark’s colors were bright red, blue, and yellow. But in live-action, that changed with 2006’s Superman Returns. Brandon Routh’s costume switched out the bright red for an almost maroon color but kept the blue classic. Ever since, the Superman costume has become more and more desaturated on screen. Both the Man of Steel suit as well as Tyler Hoechlin’s on Superman and Lois have extremely muted tones. With this latest costume, it looks like the red pops, but the blue remains muted. We should note that the image James Gunn released shows a Superman mostly in dim lighting. In places where the light hits his costume (in the knee area) the blue looks rather bright. So we’ll have to wait and see what this new Superman costume looks like when his DCU movie arrives.

The Classic Superman Spit CurlKirk Alyn as Superman in the 1940s (L) Curt Swan's Superman from the Silver Age comics (Center) and Christopher Reeve as Superman in 1978 (R)Warner Bros/DC Comics

It’s technically not part of Superman’s “costume,” but it’s a classic part of his overall look. Since almost the very beginning of his comic book career, Superman has had a stylized spit curl in his jet-black hair. It’s almost like a little min “S” on his forehead (branding, folks!) Original ’40s Superman Kirk Alyn had it, yet TV’s George Reeves didn’t. Christopher Reeve famously kept it for his incarnation of the Last Son of Krypton, as did the live-action Superboy TV series of the ’80s. However, most live-action Superman actors have since dropped it. Dean Cain on Lois & Clark in the ’90s had slicked-back hair, as did Henry Cavill. Brandon Routh, whose Superman was a version of Christopher Reeve’s iteration, maintained the spit curl. We’re glad David Corenswet is staying traditional and bringing back the spit curl for modern times.

The Kingdom Come “S” ShieldThe Superman of the Kingdom Come world joins the Justice Society of America. Art by Alex Ross.DC Comics

Although we’d already seen it, we’d be remiss not to mention the “S” shield. Artist Alex Ross designed this new crest for the series Kingdom Come. That 1996 mini-series by writer Mark Waid was about an older Superman who returns to the scene years after retiring. In that comic, the yellow was replaced with black. This version of the emblem has been seen in live-action before. Brandon Routh used it in 2019’s Arrowverse Crisis on Infinite Earthcrossover event. At first, it was a direct homage to the Kingdom Come look. By the end of that crossover though, it was a version in the traditional Superman colors. In fact, one of the very first things James Gunn teased when taking on the Superman job was an illustration from Kingdom Come.

Superman's New 52 costume (L) David Corenswet's new suit (Center) and Christopher Reeves' classic outfit (R)DC Comics/James Gunn/Warner Bros.

Of course, we won’t really know how this DCU costume looks until we see Superman in action. We do know that this Superman costume is definitely full of influences from many previous takes on his iconic outfit. It remains to be seen if this one will become as legendary as many of the rest of them. Superman releases on July 11, 2025.

Netflix’s Live-Action ONE PIECE Teases Season 2 Villain and Arabasta Arc

Netflix’s live-action One Piece was a big hit. The series was embraced by One Piece fans, new and old, and happily renewed for season two. Although One Piece season two hasn’t offered us too many hints about its plot yet, a recent video celebrating Monkey D. Luffy’s birthday offers a big tease. The video, which features Iñaki Godoy, One Piece live-action’s Luffy, seems to confirm the character of Mr. 3 will enter the scene in One Piece season two.

Mr. 3, of course, has eaten from the Wax Wax fruit and controls candle wax. His hair is shaped just like the candle we see in the One Piece live-action video. But Mr. 3’s presence also hints at a bigger story.

The appearance of Mr. 3 seems to confirm One Piece season two will adapt the franchise’s Arabasta arc. And it’s likely we’ll see Mr. 3’s fellow members of the Baroque Works criminal syndicate appear sooner rather than later. We can’t wait to learn more about One Piece season two.

THE LORD OF THE RINGS Hobbits (And Legolas) Share Reunion Photos of a Fun Night Out

If there’s one thing The Lord of the Rings teaches us, it’s that no one knows how to have a good time like a Hobbit. And that’s why we wish we, too, could have been a part of this magnificent reunion of The Lord of the Rings‘ Hobbit actors (plus one elf). Dominic Monaghan, known for playing Meriadoc “Merry” Brandybuck, shared photos of this cheerful reunion via Instagram. Joining him in the reunion of the Fellowship were fellow The Lord of the Rings actors Elijah Wood, Sean Astin, Billy Boyd, and Orlando Bloom. These four, of course, played Frodo Baggins, Samwise Gamgee, Peregrin “Pippin” Took, and the elf Legolas. We love seeing this The Lord of the Rings reunion. According to Deadline, Liv Tyler who played the elf Arwen, joined in the fun via a comment, adding “Ohhhhhh too much” with several heart-eyes.

Four Hobbits and an elf. What could be better than that?

William Shatner Open to STAR TREK Return as De-Aged Captain Kirk

If Star Trek 4 can get out of development hell and into production, we might soon see more of Chris Pine’s Captain Kirk on our screens. But he’s not the only Captain Kirk who could be making a comeback. Recently, William Shatner spoke to Canada’s Global News about a potential return to the Star Trek world as Captain Kirk.

William Shatner would return to Star Trek as deaged captain kirkParamount Pictures

He shared, “It’s an intriguing idea… It’s almost impossible. But if was a great role and so well-written and if there were a reason to be there not just to make a cameo appearance, but if there were a genuine reason for the character appearing, I might consider it.” The publication shares that Shatner mused on returning as a younger Captain Kirk through the use of deaging technology.

Though Shatner’s Captain Kirk was killed in 1994’s Star Trek Generations, Shatner notes that perhaps Kirk’s body and brain could be noted to have been frozen and then revived. He shares, “We’ve got Captain Kirk’s brain frozen here.’ There’s a scenario. ‘Let’s see if we can bring back a little bit of this, a little salt, a little pepper. Oh, look at that. Here comes Captain Kirk!’”

MORTAL KOMBAT 1 Clip Shows Homelander Slicing Heads and Sipping Milk

Homelander is bringing his unhinged behavior to a whole new universe. It’s no secret that Homelander is the worst superpowered being in The Boys universe and perhaps in any fictional world. He’s ready to sacrifice whomever to make himself look good and has a very dangerous legion of fans condoning his deplorable actions. We can safely say that he would cause chaos and fight wherever he goes. So it totally makes sense that the Mortal Kombat 1 video game is adding Homelander to the mix. The first look at Homelander in Mortal Kombat 1 reveals that Homelander is ready to face any mortal, supe, or god.

The clip is a slice of delight for The Boys fans as he begins the clip by drinking milk. We know he has a sorta-secret thirst for getting cow’s (and human’s) milk straight from the source. He goes up against Liu Kang and proceeds to fight him before lasering his head to pieces. Yep, that checks out.
