Shawn Levy Says His STAR WARS Movie Could Explore a New Time Period to Avoid Redundancy

After many false starts and canceled projects, Star Wars is finally ready to return to theaters. Lucasfilm announced three new upcoming standalone movies during the opening of Star Wars Celebration 2023. These new Star Wars movies include a story about the founding of the Jedi, a movie that will serve as the finale to this era of interconnected Disney+ shows, and the return of Daisy Ridley’s Rey. Additionally, in January 2024, Lucasfilm also announced a fourth new movie was heading to theaters, The Mandalorian & Grogu, a big-screen adventure starring our favorite Disney+ duo. Finally, the once canceled Rogue Squadron may rise to join the line-up (but nothing official has been reported.)

And with that, the galaxy far, far away is finally going back to the big screen. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy revealed James Mangold (LoganIndiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny), Dave Filoni (The MandalorianAhsoka), Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy (Ms. Marvel, Saving Face) have all been tapped to direct these new Star Wars movies. Meanwhile, Jon Favreau will take on the Mando movie. Additionally, if what Patty Jenkins says is true, she will direct an upcoming Star Wars movie as well. And lastly, it seems that Shawn Levy will also direct a Star Wars movie.

Levy briefly spoke on that movie during a Happy Sad Confused podcast appearance in August. Fresh off of Deadpool & Wolverine, the director didn’t give up too many details. But Shawn Levy did say that his Star Wars movie would not be redundant and that he and writer Jonathan Tropper have a fresh concept in mind.

“…there’s only so many times that Star Wars movies can revisit the same section of the timeline, and so it’s really forced me—because I don’t want to do a Star Wars movie that is redundant to others, nor am I interested in doing one that has to serve another movie,” he said. He hopes that his ideas will continue to thrill the powers that be at Lucasfilm and they can move forward with this film.

While Lucasfilm shared few official details about the films, the little they tell us says a lot. Here’s what we know about these new Star Wars movies so far.

James Mangold’s New Star Wars Movie Tells the Story of the Force

James Mangold’s “will go back to the dawn of the Jedi,” a time set tens of thousands of years earlier than anything we’ve ever seen on screen before. That might mean we’ll meet the figure known as Prime Jedi. That’s the person who founded the Order on Ahch-To sometime around 25,000 years before the events of A New Hope. Fans already know Ahch-To well. They first saw it in The Last Jedi when it served as Luke Skywalker’s hideaway. A release additionally shares, “James Mangold will take audiences deep into the past, telling the tale of the first Jedi to wield the Force and harness it as a liberating power in an era of chaos and oppression.”

Luke Skywalker on Ach-To in The Last Jedi, guarding the sacred Jedi texts. We may see Ach-To in one of three new Star Wars movies.Lucasfilm

Mangold further noted to Empire that his new Star Wars movie “takes place 25,000 years before Episode IV, and it’s about the discovery of the Force.” He further shares, “I told Kathy [Kennedy, head of Lucasfilm] I wanted to make a kind of Bible movie, a kind of Ten Commandments of Star Wars – kind of a Cecil B DeMille film about the arrival of the Force, and that’s what I’ve been pecking away at between press events. That’s the idea.”

According to The Hollywood Reporter, playwright and screenwriter Beau Willimon will co-write the script with Mangold. In addition to his playwriting career and his Emmy-nominated scripts for House of Cards, Willimon also wrote the prison three-parter in season one of Andor. Writing the best episodes of the best Star Wars show is some real bonafides.

James Mangold’s New Star Wars Movie Connects with Rey’s Next Appearance

Kennedy also recently shared that this movie will help inform the new Star Wars movie featuring the return of Rey. She noted to Total Film, “I think it’s a really nice compliment to what we’re doing with moving into the future with Rey, and then understanding a bit more of where this all came from,” she explains. “Because it will be at the heart of creating the new Jedi Order, so to get a real sense of where that might have began with the dawn of the Jedi could be pretty cool.”

According to a new official Star Wars eras list revealed by LucasFilm, this movie will most likely take place in the “Dawn of the Jedi” era, but could even take place earlier than that.

Dave Filoni’s Film Will Bring Together Many Current Disney+ Series

The next new Star Wars movie will come from franchise veteran Dave Filoni. His film “will focus on the New Republic and close out the interconnected stories told in The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, Ahsoka, and other Disney+ series.” That’s huge news for both the television and movie side of Lucasfilm. When we get a release date for Filoni’s film, we’ll know just how many more seasons of The Mandalorian we might see. Clearly, there’s already an end in sight to Din Djarin and Grogu’s story. Although, we suppose they could continue on beyond a culminating movie. A release further shares, “Dave Filoni will orchestrate the escalating war between the Imperial Remnant and the fledgling New Republic.”

Rey Will Return in Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy’s Star Wars Movie

The third and final new Star Wars movie announced will focus on the future. Obaid-Chinoy’s movie will take place after The Rise of Skywalker. It will mark the return of Daisy Ridley as Rey. Set 15 years after the ultimate defeat of the Sith, she will be trying to build a new Jedi Order. Hopefully, that goes a lot better than her mentor Luke Skywalker’s attempts. According to the new list of Star Wars eras, it seems like this movie will take place in the “New Jedi Order” era.

The Plot of Rey’s Upcoming Star Wars Movie

Kathleen Kennedy shared more about the movie with Variety. She noted:

Well, we’re 15 years out from ‘Rise of Skywalker,’ so we’re post-war, post-First Order, and the Jedi are in disarray. There’s a lot of discussion around, ‘Who are the Jedi? What are they doing? What’s the state of the galaxy?’ She’s attempting to rebuild the Jedi Order, based on the books, based on what she promised Luke, so that’s where we’re going.”

Speaking to Empire, Kennedy added, “The First Order has fallen, the Jedi are in chaos – there’s even a question of how many exist anymore – and Rey’s building the New Jedi Order, based on the text that she was given and that Luke imparted on her.” She also offers, “Rey has made a promise to Luke, and that’s really the core of where we’re going and what this story will be. And I think it offers just tremendous opportunity to introduce new characters and start with something fresh, because we culminated with what George [Lucas] was creating, and now we take all of that and move it to the next chapter.”

A sad and weary Luke Skywlaker in the forefront with Rey sitting behind him out of focus in The Last JediLucasfilm

On the topic of a possible Luke Skywalker presence in the new Star Wars movie, Kennedy said: “I don’t know if we’ll spend a lot of time in flashbacks or [on] Force ghosts or things like that, but certainly, the spirit of what he represents to her is going to be significant.”

Ridley previously noted, “I know bits and bobs… I know there’s an introduction of new characters… I don’t know about previous characters.” But she also didn’t rule out anyone’s return. When asked about the popular idea of John Boyega’s Finn returning as a Jedi in the new Star Wars movie, Ridley responded, “That is above my pay grade. [Laughs] I would love to see that, but that is not a decision for me.” She also recently told The Hollywood Reporter that it feels like she and Boyega should reunite in the movie, noting, “Absolutely, of course…It feels like we should, yeah.”

But Ridley does have some information, according to Empire, “she knows the story beats for what the new film will be.” And, as of May 2024, she notes that she still hasn’t read a script “but it is imminently about to change.”

A Jedi Academy Is in Rey’s Future

Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy further noted about the new Star Wars movie, “At the heart of it, for me, is Rey Skywalker, Daisy Ridley, and her story, and taking her on an adventure to a Jedi Academy and sort of creating a world that is a natural dovetail to the story that we’ve seen her go through in the last three episodes.”

Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy says she's had conversations with J.J. Abrams and George Lucas and speaks with Filoni "very often."

Obaid-Chinoy additionally adds, “I’ve had conversations with JJ Abrams. I’ve had conversations with George Lucas and, of course, Dave Filoni, who is a big part of the Star Wars universe now. We speak very often, and Kathy Kennedy, Carrie Beck, and Simon Emanuel – I think the team is really taking time to make sure that we do justice to telling the story of Daisy.”

Rey’s Future in the New Star Wars MovieStar Wars Luke training ReyLucasfilm

But will Rey’s upcoming Star Wars movie continue the common franchise trend of introducing new characters that are somehow related to other characters in the world? Daisy Ridley doesn’t really think so. Speaking to Deadline, Ridley noted it seemed unlikely that Rey would have kids in the new Star Wars film. She shared, “I would say she probably doesn’t have children seeing she’s a Jedi.” Of course, we know hypothetically Rey still could have children, like Anakin before her, but it sounds like this won’t be the path of the movie.

Daisy Ridley also notes that Rey will take a different approach to teaching the next generation of Jedi than Luke Skywalker did. Speaking to Den of Geek, she says about Rey’s tactics diverging from Luke’s, “I would say, from what I understand, yes. Short answer.”

Daisy Ridley and Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy Give Updates on the New Film

Daisy Ridley noted to Collider, “I’m very excited. The story is really cool. I’m waiting to read a script because, obviously, I don’t have any other updates. It’s not what I expected, but I’m very excited.” And additionally told The Hollywood Reporter, “I’m genuinely really excited about the next one [Star Wars movie]. I haven’t read anything, but I know the story. It’s really worth telling, worth exploring, and I think people will be excited.”

Daisy Ridley on Returning as Rey

The actress also offered a bit of a further tease about the film to AlloCiné. She said of the upcoming Rey Star Wars movie, “Once I knew what the story was and everything, I knew that it was something I really wanted to do. I think it’s a really fantastic exploration of the Star Wars world. It’s a really cool way of taking the story on in a bit of a different direction.” In conclusion, as Ridley noted to Variety, the story of this Star Wars movie is “cool as sh*t.”

Ridley also recently shared that this time around, she feels more ready to be Rey. “I suppose I feel more like I’m owning it. I suppose I owned it the first time. Basically, I’m an adult now. I certainly did not feel like an adult at the time. Obviously, personally, things have changed, and professionally, I’ve had lots of other experiences, and so I definitely feel like it’s a different thing this time. There’s just a lot of joy with me and these films. Honestly, if I wasn’t excited, I wouldn’t have done it. It feels like a great thing to be a part of.” However, the actress also expressed reprising the role could be a strange experience, saying, “I honestly have had moments where I’m like, ‘I don’t know if I remember what I did [as Rey]… It’s really strange. I think the whole thing will feel so different anyway, with a totally different team. I’m in a very different place than I was. I’m probably going to be one of the adults, and initially, I was the youngest person on set, which is a weird feeling.”

Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy on Tackling a Star Wars Story

Meanwhile, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy noted to CNN, “I’m very thrilled about the project because I feel what we’re about to create is something very special… We’re in 2024 now, and it’s about time that we had a woman come forward to shape a story in a galaxy far, far away.

We couldn’t agree more. But something tells us it won’t be smooth sailing for Rey. The dark side of the Force has a way of always creating shadows over the galaxy far, far away, especially in theaters.

The director also added, “The story that interests me most is in Rey’s journey as a female Jedi. That’s how I can best bring my experiences to it.”

A Release Date for Rey’s New Star Wars Movie

There is now a reported filming date in play for Rey’s upcoming Star Wars fim. According to Productionlist.com, which tracks production updates for the Film & Television Industry Alliance, the Rey movie will start shooting on April 7, 2024 in London. Hopefully, that means we will get casting news soon.

Recent rumors speculated that the Rey movie might have been delayed indefinitely due to creative differences between Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy and writer Steven Knight. However, according to Gizmodo, Lucasfilm has confirmed the movie is still moving forward without issue. According to the publication, a source at Lucasfilm noted, “Knight continues to write and be a part of the process. In fact, the company is waiting on his latest draft as you read this.”

Jon Favreau Takes Our Favorite Duo to the Big Screen in The Mandalorian & Grogu Din Djarin holds Grogu while flying away from an exploding ship bathed in orange fire in promo work for The Mandalorian & GroguWalt Disney Studios

In addition to joining Dave Filoni’s big group Star Wars movie, the Mandalorian and Grogu will also star in a new Star Wars movie of their own (aptly titled, The Mandalorian & Grogu). Few details are known about it for now, but it will go into production in 2024.

As previously noted, this movie is expected to start shooting in April 2024.

Patty Jenkins Returns to Direct the Once Canceled Star Wars Movie Rogue SquadronLogo for the next Star Wars film, Rogue Squadron.Lucasfilm

In 2020, Lucasfilm announced Patty Jenkins would direct a new Star Wars movie, Rogue Squadron. But the movie was removed from the company’s lineup in 2022. Now, Jenkins has revealed she’s back to work on the film, and she’ll take on the roles of writer and director. You can see what she had to say in full, here.

Deadline reports that Shawn Levy is set to direct a Star Wars movie of his own. The publication notes that the movie will be written by Jonathan Tropper. Levy’s Star Wars movie has not yet been officially announced, and no further details are available.

It’s a busy time for Shawn Levy; his MCU movie Deadpool & Wolverine will be released in theaters on July 26 and reportedly he is in talks to direct the next Avengers movie as well.

Hugh Jackman Goes All-In During DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE ADR Session

ADR, or Additional (or Automatic) Dialogue Recording (or Replacement), is an essential part of filmmaking. Especially in action movies, filled with punches landing on jaws and loud howls of pain from all variety of violence. And no actor has made the ADR recordings for action scenes more iconic than Hugh Jackman. Videos of his sessions for his previous two decades as Wolverine have made the rounds online for years, and let’s just say, Hugh really gets into it. Now, Hugh Jackman has added to his legendary ADR glory in the latest behind-the-scenes video shared by Deadpool & Wolverine director Shawn Levy, which you can watch right here:

Like the rest of us, I’ve been addicted to @RealHughJackman’s “Logan” ADR video for years. Today I proudly submit the next installment of this legend at work. Sound UP! pic.twitter.com/m4V0hhAyyU

— Shawn Levy (@ShawnLevyDirect) August 6, 2024

In between every few grunts and groans, we hear a good F-bomb tossed in for good measure. Remember, those original X-Men movies Jackman starred in were all PG-13. So he didn’t get drop many curse words in them, let alone that curse word. He got to tell Charles Xavier and Magneto to “Go f— yourselves” in X-Men: First Class, true. But he really didn’t get to unleash the beast until Logan. That was his first official R-rated turn as Wolverine. So with Deadpool & Wolverine, he gets to curse like a sailor. And hey, Logan is 200 years old, he was a sailor at some point in his life, right?

Hugh Jackman returns as Wolverine in Deadpool and WolverineMarvel Studios

All kidding aside, Hugh Jackman just proved he always goes in with full gusto when it comes to the character of Logan. Even after almost a quarter-century of playing him. This is probably why no one else has played the character in live-action besides him (Henry Cavill cameo notwithstanding). Well, except for Australian pop star Troye Sivan, who played young Logan in X-Men: Origins Wolverine way back in 2009. (There’s a bit of trivia for ya). It’s going to take someone truly special to wear those claws in the MCU when Jackman decides to retire for real.

Netflix’s STRANGER THINGS Prequel Play Heads to Broadway

We’ve always known that the Stranger Things universe would expand in some way. In the next couple of years, we will get the show’s fifth and final season. But Netflix will certainly want to continue the universe of its biggest hit. And while we have our own Stranger Things spinoff ideas, including a ‘90s series, this isn’t quite what we had in mind. Stranger Things headed to the stage for Stranger Things: The First Shadow, a live stage play at the Phoenix Theater in London’s West End. And now it’s also heading to Broadway. You can take a look at everything we’ve learned about the Stranger Things play since we first heard about it below.

Stranger Things: The First Shadow Heads to Broadway

That’s right the Stranger Things play is heading to Broadway. It will begin previews at the Marquis Theatre on March 28, 2025, and has an opening night slated for April 22, 2025.

Tickets for Stranger Things: The First Shadow on Broadway will go on sale to the general public at 11 am ET on September 17. However, earlier pre-sale tickets will be released at 11 am on September 13 for anyone who signs up on the show’s official website.

Meet Henry Creel

Here’s a trailer for what fans can expect in this Henry Creel-centric story taking place in Hawkins in 1959:

A Trilogy of Stranger Things Plays Could Be in the Works

Deadline reports that the The First Shadow could begin a trilogy of plays that delve into Stranger Things world. It notes the this play could be “the first installment in a trilogy exploring the dark underbelly of Hawkins, Indiana.” If The First Shadow is successful, parts two and three could follow in the coming years. With Stranger Things coming to a close, it would definitely be an interesting way to keep the world alive. No official confirmation has yet come.

Stranger Things: The First Shadow Production ImagesFirst full look at The Stranger Things Play, The First ShadowNetflix

We now officially have our first looks at the Stranger Things play in full force. Netflix has released some images that reveal how the play will look when it’s being performed. The staging is pretty cool. And it looks like someone is fully dressing as a Demogorgon, which we have to applaud. Our least favorite creatures, the Demobats, are also flapping around. And at the center of it all is, of course, Henry Creel, a.k.a Vecna.

Check out all the teases of this play in action below, including images of Joyce, Hopper, Dr. Brenner, and ore, in action.

Netflix has also revealed that the first act title of the Stranger Things play will be, “Chapter One: The Girl From Nowhere.” Very mysterious. Start your speculating now.

The Stranger Things Play Synopsis and First-Look Rehearsal Images

The Stranger Things play is based on an original story by the Duffer Brothers, Jack Thorne, and Kate Trefry (who wrote this play) and will hit the stage sometime in late 2023. Of course, Netflix will produce it alongside Sonia Friedman Productions, and fans will certainly show up to see what happens. Here’s the plot synopsis for Stranger Things: The First Shadow stage play:

Hawkins, 1959: a regular town with regular worries. Young Jim Hopper’s car won’t start, Bob Newby’s sister won’t take his radio show seriously and Joyce Maldonado just wants to graduate and get the hell out of town. When new student Henry Creel arrives, his family finds that a fresh start isn’t so easy… and the shadows of the past have a very long reach. Brought to life by a multi-award-winning creative team, who take theatrical storytelling and stagecraft to a whole new dimension, this gripping new adventure will take you right back to the beginning of the Stranger Things story – and may hold the key to the end.

We also have our first look at rehearsals for Stranger Things: The First Shadow. In them, we prominently see Henry Creel glaring into space and also get our first tease of a young Joyce Byers (at the time Joyce Maldonado)

Additionally, a teaser for the Stranger Things play hints that it could also be crucial for understanding what’s to come in Stranger Things 5.

— Stranger Things (@Stranger_Things) July 5, 2023

We have to admit that it is quite an interesting take on the series. Fans met Henry Creel and his family last season, and there’s certainly a lot to mine from his story. Sure, there were flashes of his childhood and backstory. But now we will get to see more about his life in the Stranger Things play. And, who isn’t curious about what a young Hopper, Joyce, and Bob were like, as well as the town itself? At this time, Jim and Joyce would have been between 17-19 years old, with the former getting ready to be drafted into the Vietnam War. So, they probably would have little to no interaction with Henry, who was middle school-aged in 1959. But hey, they could always play with timelines and bend the rules a bit.

Behind The Scenes of Stranger Things: The First Shadow

In honor of Stranger Things Day 2023, Netflix shared our long look at the play. Among other tidbits, Stranger Things: The First Shadow sounds like it will prominently feature a love story between the soon-to-be Vecna, Henry Creel, and Bob Newby’s sister, Patty Newby. Writer Kate Trefry shares that the main thrust of the story is Patty and her little budding romance with Henry. We admit we did not see that one coming.

Additionally, the featurette notes that the Stranger Things play is the origin story of how Henry Creel became Number 001 and of the Upside Down. Plus, there will be blood, guts, and Easter eggs.

The Stranger Things play original cast is also set! Shane Attwooll and Christopher Buckley will portray Chief Hopper and Bob Newby, respectively. Oscar Lloyd will be James Hopper, Jr. and we can’t wait to learn more about him. Michael Jibson will take on the role of Victor Creel, Louis McCartney plays his son Henry Creel, and Lauren Ward will be Virginia Creel. Isabella Pappas will portray Joyce Maldonaldo, Ella Kaurna Williams is Patty Newby, and Patrick Vaill rounds out the cast as Dr. Brenner.

Tickets for the Stranger Things play went on sale March 30th. And tickets are now available for as low as £45 (USD $57.20). Additionally, fans can lottery to get “Shadow Seats” for the performances via the TodayTix app. These 11 pairs of seats will be available via lottery each week and cost £19.59 per seat, according to Variety.

The play is now running.

Disney+ and Hulu Price Increases Are Coming This October

Disney is getting ready to increase the prices on most of its streamers this fall, including Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+. These latest price increases for Disney+ and Hulu seem designed to incentivize consumers to switch to the Disney+ and Hulu ad-supported bundle (also known as The Disney Bundle). And while that might be the case, seeing the millionth price hike is probably incredibly tiring for consumers. It was just this time last year that Disney announced its last series of price hikes. But last time, price increases only impacted ad-free tiers. This time, no tier is safe. Will streaming prices ever stop rising? It doesn’t seem likely. But how much is the cost of Disney+, Hulu, and more changing this time around? Here’s the breakdown.

How Much Will the Price of Disney+ and More Increase in the Fall of 2024?Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) is in shock alongside Logan (Hugh Jackman) in a scene from Deadpool & Wolverine. For Disney+ and hulu price increase article.Marvel Studios Disney+’s Price Increase

Here’s where we stand on the price increase front. Disney+’s ad-supported tier will increase by $2 a month; it will go from $7.99 a month to $9.99 a month. Disney+’s ad-free tier will also increase by $2 a month, going from $13.99 to $15.99.

Hulu’s Price Increases

On the Hulu front, Hulu’s ad-supported tier will also go from $7.99 to $9.99 per month, increasing my $2. Hulu’s ad-free plan will increase in cost by $1 per month, going from $17.99 per month to $18.99 per month.

The Disney Bundle Price Increases

The Disney Bundle Basic Duo, which features Disney+ and Hulu’s ad-supported tiers, will increase by $1 per month and cost $10.99 per month. After this last increase, Disney+ will cost $9.99 per month, so paying one more dollar for an additional streamer now feels sensible. Of course, the shifting streaming prices have been designed to make it so. It seems streamers want to push their consumers to ad-supported options now more than ever.

The only plan that will not see an increase in price is The Disney Bundle Duo Premium or ad-free option. It will remain $19.99.

The Disney Bundle “trio” option will also increase in price. The trio includes Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+. Consumers will see a price hike of $2 on both the basic and premium versions of the plan; they’ll land at $16.99 and $26.99 a month, respectively.

Other Price Increases

ESPN+ will also see a $1 price increase, going from $10.99 per month to $11.99 per month. Hulu with Live TV will see a $6 price hike per month, landing it at $82.99 (phew) for the version that includes ad-supported tiers of Disney+ and Hulu and $95.99 (phew!) for the version with ad-free tiers.

When Will the Disney+ and Hulu Price Hikes Go Into Effect?

These latest price increases for Disney+, Hulu, and more will begin on October 17.

To help account for these price hikes, Disney is adding a new feature: continuous playlists. The playlists function basically like TV channels. They play continuous offerings that a user can simply tune into without having to make decisions about what exactly to watch. First up are two continuous playlists, one for ABC News Live and one for preschool content.

Disney+’s president Alisa Bowen shares, “Playlists are the latest example of how we’re providing the best value and experience for our subscribers every time they open Disney+. Whether it’s news, kids’ content, popular genres, hit TV shows, or blockbuster films, there will be something for everyone in a lean-back viewing experience based on seasonality and interest.”

The first two channels mentioned above will go live on September 4. Later in the fall, four more playlists will join them, and these will be refreshed monthly. They include playlists for seasonal content, retro and nostalgic throwbacks, real-life programming that involves documentaries, biopics, and more, and “epic stories” from Star Wars, Disney, and Marvel IP. These will only be available for Premium subscribers.

Who Is HOUSE OF THE DRAGON’s Admiral Lohar? The Character’s FIRE & BLOOD History, Explained

House of the Dragon‘s season two finale brought Tyland Lannister across the Narrow Sea to meet with the Triarchy. Prince Regent Aemond Targaryen needs an armada to break House Velaryon’s blockade of the Gullet. The green council’s Master of Ships secured the alliance at great cost, both in terms of money and personal injury. He only sealed the deal after also proving his own worth as a man to a memorable new character. “The Queen Who Ever Was” introduced Admiral Sharako Lohar, a fascinating, eccentric character based on two pirates from George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood.

Tyland Lannister thought he had successfully negotiated terms with the Triarchy’s representatives only to learn there was one last thing he needed to do. The pirates said the fleet would not fight unless the Triarchy’s commander Admiral Lohar would lead them. “The sailors are fiercely loyal to him,” the three pirates explained. To win Lohar’s services Tyland would need to get dirty. Literally.

The Lyseni Admiral was not the person Tyland expected to meet when the commander entered the tent. The other pirates had referred to Lohar—played by trans actress and popular YouTuber Abigail Thorn (The Acolyte)—as “he/him.” The commander also wore men’s clothes and later spoke of their many wives they hoped Tyland would impregnate. Only, Lohar presented as a woman enough that when the Admiral told Tyland of his wish “to have children with” him the Lannister lord thought Lohar wanted to sleep with him.

Lohar speaks to Tyland during a feast while both are seated on House of the DragonHBO

That gender ambiguity was intentional, both on screen and off. Thorn herself called Lohar “she” when announcing her casting on the show. Is Lohar a transman? Gender fluid? Those terms do not seem to exist in the world of House of the Dragon, but no matter what term might be most appropriate the bigger point is that the pirate commander was trying to keep Tyland on his toes throughout their time together. Lohar also asked him what kind of man he is and whether he had ever eaten the flesh of his enemies. (A jest!) And of course the Admiral made Tyland wrestle in the mud to prove his worth as an ally. Lohar agrees to go for Team Green and the band of pirates sets sail along with Tyland at the end of the finale. So, we will see Admiral Lohar in House of the Dragon season three.

VERY excited to announce this – I’m joining the cast of HBO’s House of the Dragon 😈🐉 I play Sharako Lohar – she’s the Triarchy’s new commander and you can see her in action soon! 🏴‍☠️⚔️💪#HOTDS2 pic.twitter.com/SHEC39viqB

Admiral Sharako Lohar Isn’t a Major Character in Fire & Blood, So House of the Dragon Uses Rycallio Ryndoon’s Story

Fire & Blood barely talks about the Lyseni Admiral Sharako Lohar, who is called “he” in one of the few sentences that even refers to the pirate. The version of Lohar on House of the Dragon takes obvious inspiration from a different, far more memorable pirate who features prominently in Martin’s in-world history, the Tyroshi captain-general Rycallio Ryndoon.

The 6’6″ tall Ryndoon, revered in songs and poems throughout the Free Cities of Esos, dyed his hair and beard orange and purple. The flamboyant sailor fought against Daemon Targaryen in the Stepstones long before the Dance of the Dragons. At one point in life he even named himself King of the Narrow Sea. The pirate also liked to dress like a woman and work as a prostitute. The great swordsman was also as equally generous with coin as he was with spewing vulgarities. He also liked to make potential allies fight in the mud and sometimes asked the most worthy men impregnate his many wives.

A muddied Admiral Lohar sneers on House of the DragonHBO

House of the Dragon‘s Lohar has far more in common with Rycallio Ryndoon than their Fire & Blood counterpart. And the show is better for it. Westeros is a stuffy place of norms and expectations during the best of times. During a deadly war of fire and blood, a gender-fluid pirate who loves mud wrestling and making wealthy lords uncomfortable is exactly what everyone needs.

NATIONAL TREASURE 3 Script Features Justin Bartha’s Riley Poole, Plans for Nic Cage’s Character to Return

Sometimes, the most exciting news is the kind dropped the most casually. Back in 2022 during a conversation with ComicBook.com about Top Gun Maverick, iconic producer Jerry Bruckheimer seemingly revealed a piece of information many fans have been eager for, for a long time. He said that National Treasure 3 movie was in the works with Nicolas Cage’s possible involvement. It sounded like they were in the early stages of the script and movie. We were hype about actually getting National Treasure 3 with Cage involved, but we really aren’t sure what the heck is happening here.

UPDATE, 3/13/2024: In a 2024 interview with ScreenRant, Nicolas Cage said that there is no National Treasure 3 after all. His statement on this apparently nonexistent sequel is very direct, indeed. “Here we go!,” said Cage. “See, you’re the one that brings these things up and they go out and they eclipse everything else. No, there is no National Treasure 3. If you want to find treasure, don’t look at Disney, okay? It’s not there.”

UPDATE, 3/27/2024: Despite Cage’s comments, Jerry Bruckheimer shared that National Treasure 3 actually is in the works. He noted to MovieWeb, “Well, we hope there’s a National Treasure 3 . We’ve been working on it for quite a while. We have a brilliant writer working on it right now, so hopefully, if we get a script in a timely fashion, we’ll send it to Nic [Cage] and, if he likes it, we’ll make another one. We certainly would like to.”

UPDATE, 5/31/2024: The National Treasure 3 wildness continues. As reported by CBR, franchise director Jon Turteltaub spoke about the film on Comicbook.com’s National Treasure podcast, saying the script is “being written” now.

Riley Poole sits surrounded by his books in National Treasure 2Disney

UPDATE, 8/6/2024: Writer Ted Elliot chatted with ScreenRant and, while he doesn’t confirm that Cage’s Ben Gates is returning, he does say the scrip revolves around Justin Bartha’s Riley Poole. It will also include movie characters and those from the short-lived TV series National Treasure: Edge of History, which featured Bartha’s Riley. Elliot is writing with the idea that Ben and Abigail will return, but who knows.

“That doesn’t mean it will be finished and be great, but if it’s being written it will definitely be momentous when we read it,” he explained. “We all know what’s in it. But there’s a very, very good writer writing it right now who tends to write really good movies. If the script comes out close to good and you can see the finish line from where you are, we’re making the movie.”

Riggghtttt. He also said that there’s a 100% chance of the original cast returning. Someone tell that to Nic Cage.

We need Benjamin Franklin Gates to get on this mystery, stat.

Abigail, Ben, and Riley in National Treasure. Could Nicolas Cage return for National Treasure 3?Disney

PREVIOUSLY: Jerry Bruckheimer notes that he’s “working on another National Treasure” as one of three big things on his plate right now. When asked if Nicolas Cage would return for National Treasure 3, he offers, “Let’s hope. We’re working on a script right now, hopefully, he likes it. But I think it’s really good, so hopefully, we’ll get it to him shortly.”

Meanwhile, Justin Bartha, who plays Riley Poole in the franchise, offered:

There is a script. That’s all I’ll say. There have been a few different scripts, actually, but the one thing that has to happen is for all the stars to align. I had seen something awhile ago, and it was solid, but the unsung hero of these movies that doesn’t get mentioned as much is Jon Turtletaub. Those movies really are an extension of his being. He is very smart and funny, and has a buoyancy to him that mirrors the tone of the movies. I think he has to feel really comfortable and feel like he can see the movie before it happens — and it is getting closer to that.

There’s been a lot of conversation around Nicolas Cage and National Treasure recently. Nicolas Cage, of course, starred in movies such as Pig and The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent. During the press tours for these movies, he talked a lot about his career. And, in all honesty, Cage’s interviews did not make it seem like National Treasure 3 was on the table. He even said that there would “probably not” be another movie.

National Treasure Edge of HistoryDisney+

The National Treasure franchise, meanwhile, has yielded a Disney+ TV series. National Treasure: Edge of History released in December 2022, and it saw two actors from the original franchise return to the world. Harvey Keitel returned as Peter Sadusky, and the aforementioned Justin Bartha returned as Riley Poole. While the creators of this National Treasure series have indicated they would love for Nicolas Cage to come on board, he does not seem involved.

All this to say, people have hoped for a National Treasure 3 movie starring Nicolas Cage since National Treasure 2 aired. And while it seems like the movie has had many false starts before, maybe it is finally on its way. We hope Nicolas Cage likes what he sees when reads the National Treasure 3 script.

DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE Cast Share Behind-the-Scenes Cameo Photos

With Deadpool & Wolverine now in theaters for some time (if you count a couple of weekends as “some time”) cast and crew have started to feel comfortable sharing the surprise actors from the film on social media. And man, did Deadpool & Wolverine ever have a metric ton of surprise faces. Some as full-on supporting characters, and others as brief cameos. Now, they’re all finally sharing behind-the-scenes images of the making of Deadpool & Wolverine. Starting with some posts from director Shawn Levy himself.

Ryan Reynolds then shared other images of his fellow “Heroes of the Void” on social media, starting with a character just about no one expected to see again. At least played by this particular actor.

Wesley Snipes as Blade

There is no Fox Marvel Universe or MCU without Blade first creating a market. He’s Marvel Daddy. Please retweet for a Logan-like send off. #DeadpoolAndWolverine pic.twitter.com/wGv2ixBT8G

— Ryan Reynolds (@VancityReynolds) August 5, 2024

First off, Reynolds posted some photos of himself and Wesley Snipes, who returned as Blade. The return of the OG Daywalker was a big shock to many. Mainly, because Reynolds and Snipes famously did not get along on the set of Blade: Trinity. But hey, that was twenty years ago. Ryan Reynolds now says he wants Blade to get the Logan-style send-off he deserves. They might have a better chance of happening at this point than the Mahershala Ali MCU reboot. We love Reynolds’ nickname for Snipes of “Marvel Daddy.”

Channing Tatum as Gambit

Gambit is a guy Chan was born to play. His story is similar to mine in that he spent a decade trying to put the most comic-accurate version of Gambit on the big screen. Remy LeBeau is grafted to his soul and needs to come out and deal. And Gambit found his author in Chan. He’s… pic.twitter.com/9Hz7qbZ85S

Next, Ryan Reynolds gushed about his buddy Channing Tatum finally getting to play a comic book- accurate version of Gambit. After a decade of trying to play the Cajun mutant Remy LeBeau, Tatum delivered a heartfelt and hilarious performance. Here’s hoping this is not the last we see of the X-Men’s ragin’ Cajun.

Henry Cavill as a Wolverine Variant

Another jaw-dropping surprise was former Superman Henry Cavill as a variant of Wolverine. We must say, Cavill looks perfect in the role. Although, who would he look bad as? The former Man of Steel (now Man of Adamantium?) shared a photo on his Instagram. He even joked about his Justice League mustache debacle.

Dafnee Keen as Laura/X-23

Dafne Keen confirmed Laura/X-23 in Deadpool & Wolverine is a direct continuation of the character from Logan.

— Phase Zero – MCU (@PhaseZeroCB) August 5, 2024

Meanwhile, Dafne Keen broke her silence about her return as Laura Kinney, a.k.a. Wolverine’s daughter X-23. She confirmed that her version of the character is not a variant. She’s just an older version of the Laura we met in Logan.

Jennifer Garner as Elektra

Jennifer Garner shares new footage of herself training for her role as #Elektra in #DeadpoolAndWolverine pic.twitter.com/n1qkPnQ555

— The Hollywood Reporter (@THR) August 5, 2024

Although the trades spoiled her return last year, many folks still didn’t know Jennifer Garner would be back as Elektra from Daredevil and her solo spin-off film. The actress recently shared a video of herself training to get back into assassin shape for Deadpool & Wolverine, and twirling her twin sai swords.

(From L to R) Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, Wesley Snipes as Blade, Channing Tatum as Gambit, Dafne Keen as X-23, Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool, and Jennifer Garner as Elektra in Deadpool & Wolverine.Marvel Studios Chris Evans as the Human Torch

Chris Evans on returning as Johnny Storm in ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’:

“Thank you to Ryan Reynolds, Hugh Jackman and Shawn Levy for letting me be a part of such an incredible movie! They’re three of the nicest guys you’ll ever meet. Special thank you to Ryan for making it all… pic.twitter.com/PgxcGqEjOi

— Pop Crave (@PopCrave) July 31, 2024

And finally, via his Instagram stories, Chris Evans posted about his return to Marvel Studios….as the Human Torch, not Captain America. Anyone who saw the film could tell he had a blast playing the Fantastic Four’s Johnny Storm again, unleashing a string of curse words that Steve Rogers would never.

DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE’S Peter Is a Combination of 2 Peters from Marvel Comics

When Deadpool 2 hit theaters in 2018, one character won all of our hearts. No, not Josh Brolin as Cable (although he was pretty cool). We speak of everyday, ordinary Peter, played by character actor Rob Delaney. Peter Wisdom was just a regular guy who was looking for a job when Wade Wilson was taking applicants for his new X-Force team he was putting together. The affable Peter, who had no powers or skills to speak of, instantly won Deadpool over, and joined the squad. Sadly, he died on his first mission along with most of the team. A truly tragic cinematic moment. Luckily, he got better, and returned in Deadpool & Wolverine.

Rob Delaney applies for X-Force in Deadpool 2. Marvel Comics Deadpool & Wolverine Gives Peter a Huge Moment

Thanks to Cable’s time travel device, which Deadpool stole, Wade was able to go back in time and undo Peter’s untimely death. Six years later in Deadpool & Wolverine, on Earth-100005, Peter and Wade are co-workers at a car dealership, living an uneventful existence together selling cars. Peter still awaits the day Wade gets back in the superhero game and keeps his old uniform in his work locker.

Rob Delaney as Deadpool's BFF Peter in Deadpool & Wolverine.Marvel Comics

We see that Peter is one of the people that Wade cares about most, and he attends his birthday party early in the movie. At the end of Deadpool & Wolverine, Peter shows up to the big battle with the Deadpool Corps wearing Wade’s old costume as Peterpool, and his mere presence ends the fight. It turns out, every Deadpool across the Multiverse has a Peter of their own, and they just can’t bring themselves to harm him.

The Comic Book Inspirations for Peterpool

Peter Wisdom is basically a creation of the writers of Deadpool 2, and has no real Marvel Comics counterpart. Well, except in name that is. Peter is kind of a combination of two characters by the name of Peter from Marvel Comics. One very famous, and one pretty obscure. The first one should come as no surprise.

Peterpool Is Partially Inspired by Peter Parker/Spider-Man Lovey-dovey Deadpool and Spider-Man together in the pages of Marvel Comics.Marvel Comics

In the comics, Wade Wilson has a unique friendship with the Amazing Spider-Man. (And also, a bit of a crush on him it seems). When Deadpool is thinking of giving in to his darkest impulses, it’s often Peter Parker who appeals to the better angels of his nature. And Wade usually listens. Because of various rights issues, Spider-Man couldn’t be that character in the Deadpool films. So a substitute Peter had to be created. Although we sincerely hope one day (In Secret Wars perhaps?) we finally see Deadpool and the real Spidey share the screen together. The universe owes us Ryan Reynolds and Tom Holland trading quips and annoying everyone.

Peterpool’s Comic Book Namesake Is X-Men Hero Pete WisdomThe mutant hero Pete Wisdom from Marvel's X-Force.Marvel Comics

The less-famous comic book hero Peter is based on is a mutant hero from the ’90s named Pete Wisdom. He couldn’t have less in common with Deadpool & Wolverine’s Peter if he tried, outside of his name. In the comics, Pete Wisdom is a snarky, dry-witted British MI13 agent and occult expert, meant as a bit of a riff on DC’s John Constantine. Like Constantine, they often show him with a cigarette in his mouth and wearing a trenchcoat. He became involved with the British X-Men team Excalibur, and even dated Kitty Pryde for a brief time. His mutant power involved throwing energy blades, which he called his “hot knives,” from his fingertips. So in a sense, he was also a British version of Gambit. Pete Wisdom would later join X-Force, so in that sense, he has something in common with his cinematic namesake.

Peter’s Future in the MCU

Ultimately, the Peter Wisdom in the Deadpool films is his own unique creation, borrowing only superficial elements from the comics. We just know that we love Rob Delaney in the role, and wherever Deadpool goes next, we hope Peter is right behind him. We think he’d have himself a good old time on Battleworld in Avengers: Secret Wars when the time comes.

HBO Shares First Footage of Dunk and Egg From A KNIGHT OF THE SEVEN KINGDOMS

Before Westeros said goodbye to House of the Dragon‘s second season, it said hello to the Realm’s most beloved duo. HBO shared a sizzle reel for shows debuting in 2024 and 2025. The montage included the first official footage from the network’s upcoming Game of Thrones prequel, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. Dunk and Egg’s live-action debut was brief, but it still featured some memorable moments and characters from their first tale together.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdom‘s first season will adapt George R.R. Martin’s first Dunk and Egg novella, 1998’s The Hedge Knight. The show’s footage opens with Peter Claffey’s Ser Duncan the Tall arriving on horseback at (what is almost certainly) Ashford Meadow for a grand tourney. There a stern Dunk puts on his helmet, though his armor is clearly not that of a wealthy knight.

Ser Duncan on horseback starts to put his helmet on A Knight of the Seven KingdomsHBO

We then see a minor character named Plummer the steward. He’s the master of games for the tourney. Here we see him ask Dunk for his name. What we don’t see is the issue of standing Plummer will raise with the large knight.

Plummer the Steward holds a quill sitting at a desk with a big book on A Knight of the Seven KingdomsHBO

That’s followed by our only look at the legendary duo’s other namesake, Egg. The secret Targaryen prince (another Aegon!) played by Dexter Sol Ansell sits by a fire where a bird is cooking on a spit. His shaved head hides his true identity, which will end up playing a big role in how he ends up becoming Ser Duncan’s squire.

Bald Egg looks away from a fire where a bird cooks on a spit on A Knight of the Seven KingdomsHBO

From a distance we then see an older man practicing with his sword. That’s Ser Arlan of Pennytree, the hedge knight Dunk who took Dunk on as a squire when Duncan was just a boy. Ser Arlan’s death leads Duncan to head to Ashford Meadow’s tourney alone.

An older knight practices with his sword near a tree in the woods on A Knight of the Seven KingdomsHBO

That’s followed by Duncan drawing his sword near a tree (an important tree!) as we hear him say his name and title in a voiceover. Is he training without his armor? The way he points his sword indicates this is no mere exercise. Someone has raised his ire.

Dunk in his clothes holds his sword out near a tree on A Knight of the Seven KingdomsHBO

Finally we see Dunk of Flea Bottom punch a man in armor. They are fighting in the mud with bodies strewn all around them. Who is Dunk fighting? The answer qualifies as a big spoiler, because that person’s name will give away a major part of the story. If you don’t want to know who it is, you can wait until the show debuts in 2025. (Or you can read Martin’s story.) If you can’t wait, though, continue reading past this picture.

Dunk punches a man in armor in a fight in the mud on A Knight of the Seven KingdomsHBO

That unseen combatant is most likely Egg’s older brother, Aerion Brightflame. Why is a lowly hedge knight fighting a royal prince in the mud? We’re not going to spoil everything after just six seconds of footage from A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.

HOUSE OF THE DRAGON Will End with Season 4

The second season of House of the Dragon has wrapped and once again fans are in the long, dark until the next season. In a recent interview, showrunner Ryan Cogdal said season three won’t go into production until early next year, so you can bet on another year-long-plus gap as happened between seasons one and two. Another confirmation from Cogdal concerns the show’s total number of seasons. Unlike Game of Thrones that went into season eight, House of the Dragon will end after season four.

Aemond declared prince regent on House of the Dragon season twoHBO

The showrunner explained he and the other writers mapped the rest of the show’s story, as explored in George R.R. Martin’s book Fire & Blood, after season one wrapped. So while fans are a bit disappointed at the lack of major battles, and therefore major deaths, in the season two finale, Cogdal promises the next season will give you more than your money’s worth.

“One of the things that came into play in season two,” Cogdal said, “is: What is the final destination of the series and where are we going? We wanted to rebalance the story in such a way that we had three great seasons of television [after season one] to round out and tell this story. When you’re trying to mount the show, which requires a tremendous amount of resources, construction, armor, costumes, visual effects … we are trying to give The Gullet — which is arguably the second most anticipated action event of Fire & Blood — trying to give it the time and the space that it deserves.”

Rhaenyra and her retinue walk through a doorway to dragons on House of the DragonHBO

The Battle of the Gullet is one of the key major conflicts in the Targaryen Civil War, and this season took great care to lay the groundwork for it and what will come after. “So I apologize for the wait,” Cogdal said. “But with the team that we have together, we’re going to pull off a hell of a win with The Battle of the Gullet.”
