MOANA 2’s Beautiful Trailer Promises to Go Even Farther in a Quest for Connection
Moana stole our hearts with its epic journey into unknown waters and back. But now, Moana 2 will take us even farther, as Moana’s ancestors call her on an epic new quest. This time, she’s out to unite her people and make connections she never before could have imagined. And If you thought Moana was a beautiful movie, even just the trailer for Moana 2 will absolutely blow you away. You can watch it in full below.
Moana is older, wiser, and even more ready to throw herself into the waves in Moana 2‘s trailer. And we’re immediately back in love with this character and her world. We especially can’t resist the adorable Pua, the pot-belly pig. Pua wants to come along, but also wants a nap. That’s relatable content.

There are stormy waters ahead, though, as Moana sets out to fight the villainous Storm of all Storms and encounters other obstacles along the way, such as… vicious coconut monsters. But luckily, she’ll have her ally Maui, voiced by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, to help her out yet again.

Regardless of what awaits Moana, if the Moana 2 trailer is any indication, it’ll be absolutely gorgeous. We cannot get enough of this animation, especially the way the ocean is so gloriously depicted. We bet it will play incredibly on a big screen.

Alongside the trailer, Disney shared a synopsis for Moana 2. It notes:
Walt Disney Animation Studios’ epic animated musical “Moana 2” reunites Moana (voice of Cravalho) and Maui (voice of Johnson) three years later for an expansive new voyage alongside a crew of unlikely seafarers. After receiving an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors, Moana must journey to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she’s ever faced. Directed by David Derrick Jr., Jason Hand and Dana Ledoux Miller, and produced by Christina Chen and Yvett Merino, “Moana 2” features music by Grammy® winners Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, Grammy nominee Opetaia Foa‘i, and three-time Grammy winner Mark Mancina. Jared Bush and Miller are writing the film, which is executive produced by Jennifer Lee, Bush and Johnson.
The film also features returning stars Rachel House (Moana’s Grandma, Tala), Temuera Morrison (Moana’s father, Chief Tui) and Nicole Scherzinger (Moana’s mother, Sina), as well as the voices of Hualālai Chung, David Fane and Rose Matafeo as Moana’s new crew members Moni, Kele and Loto, respectively. Awhimai Fraser voices mysterious new character Matangi; Gerald Ramsey plays Moana’s ancestor, Tautai Vasa; and Khaleesi Lambert-Tsuda lends her voice to Moana’s adoring and adorable little sister, Simea.

We can’t wait to join Moana on this epic quest. And we especially can’t wait to hear the new songs in store for us in this film.

HOUSE OF THE DRAGON’s Tom Glynn-Carney On Why Aegon Doesn’t Have a Mustache
House of the Dragon‘s first season seated Tom Glynn-Carney’s Aegon on the Iron Throne. But despite wearing the Conqueror’s crown Alicent’s oldest son still felt like a minor player in his own war for succession. That was not the case during season two. Aegon was one of the biggest players in the prequel’s deadly family game of thrones. As was Glynn-Carney himself, who delivered one of the best, most complicated, most challenging performances of the season. Nerdist spoke to him about that, where Larys is really taking the injured King, how he feels about his mom, and more following season two’s finale. We also found out why we shouldn’t give up hope just yet of eventually seeing Aegon’s awful mustache from Fire & Blood.

Nerdist: I’m told you’re on holiday in a remote area, so I have to ask the obvious question: are you currently vacationing in Bravos?
Tom Glynn-Carney: :laughs: No. No, I’m not.
I’m in :actual location—which Nerdist can confirm is beautiful—withheld so Aemond Targaryen doesn’t find out:.
Do you know exactly where Larys is taking Aegon? Is it really Braavos?
Glynn-Carney: Can’t disclose that information at this point, I don’t think. But wherever it is, it’s somewhere. Sorry, I just made that up. I don’t know.

Does Aegon have any doubts about Larys or does he fully trust him at this point?
Glynn-Carney: He’s the best of a bad bunch in the Red Keep. I think there is a certain amount of trust that he has towards Larys just because there’s common ground. They’re both physically impaired now, and Larys has lived his entire life in that state. So there’s some sort of connectivity going on there, but also it seems like he does have Aegon’s best interests at heart at this point. I don’t think Aegon wants to look too much into that at the moment. He will find cracks in the woodwork. So yeah, he’s a lifeline at the moment. And he shall be used accordingly.
At this point how does Aegon feel about his mother Alicent?
Glynn-Carney: That’s a good question. I think he feels there’s this undying love that he has for Alicent. Aegon, he’s her first born son, and yet there’s never been this kind of understanding or eye-to-eye that they’ve had. He knows she’s flawed, and she knows he’s flawed, and I think they expect a lot from each other that neither of them are able to give. But at this point, he’s not thinking that rationally. He likes to point the finger and he needs to find somebody to blame. He blames Aemond, of course. But also for it to get to this point, Alicent has sort of steered the ship in a certain way. So yeah, there’s a lot going on there. It’s quite a complex relationship.

I know as an actor you have to find Aegon’s humanity, but does the King himself recognize, in any way, he’s a monster?
Glynn-Carney: I think he’s dancing with the idea of being loved and feared at the same time. I know I’ve said that in interviews before, but I think it’s a good way of putting it. Those two things don’t really go together. He’s trying to work out a way for his approach to being the king and to ruling. He’s trying to strike a balance where he remains effective, but also people listen to him. At the moment he hasn’t been listened to, which is kind of why he’s had to force himself into this position of being proactive in a way that he was not ready to do.
So, no, I don’t think he thinks he’s a monster because I don’t think he is a monster. I think he’s somebody who’s very tortured and traumatized by his own making really. But I also think it makes somebody more dangerous when they don’t realize potential. I don’t think he does quite just yet.
Considering I know how important Aegon is to the story, I was very frustrated by how little the show featured you in season one. Did you know back then just how big your role would be in season two?
Glynn-Carney: I was warned it was an introduction. Just in terms of the time jump. We couldn’t really have the older versions of our characters, myself and Helaena and Aemond and the likes, because of the time jump we were making. I understood season one was always more of an introduction to our versions of these characters, and season two would really lift off. And season three and onwards would just get tastier and tastier as time went on. So no, I didn’t feel shortchanged or let down or anything. I was always updated with the plan.

The show is charting its own course and making some big changes to the Dance of the Dragons. Have (showrunner) Ryan Condal and the writers given you a heads up on what awaits Aegon in seasons three and four?
Glynn-Carney: Yeah, I’ve spoken to Ryan and writers Sara Hess and David Hancock a lot about their ideas, about the trajectory that they want Aegon to go on. They have been quite…there’s been details, but not too detailed because of giving things away and not locking things in the writing room. It’s exciting to listen to and it’s exciting to understand where their thoughts are and include me in that as well, which is great. It feels very collaborative that they want to know my thoughts and the rest of the actors on their own characters journeys really. It’s great.
I think this is really saying something on a show this well acted: your performance this year was a revelation for many and has rightfully earned very high praise. What’s it been like personally hearing that kind of response to your work?
Glynn-Carney: It’s very kind. Thank you. To be honest, I try and stay away from all of the conversations about it. It feels like my work, for now anyway, has been done. And I want to sort of put it to bed and move on and not really dwell on it. I think if I get too engaged with what people are saying, and the noises people are making, I’ll get too in my head. That’s not really the way I like to work. But I’m really glad to hear that people are responding well and they’re seeing lots of different colors to Aegon that they didn’t anticipate.
That was my job from the first day on set, to bring this character to life in a multidimensional, varied, color palette kind of way. And he’s an absolute gift to play. I think you’d do well to do a bad job of a character like Aegon. He’s a gift that keeps on giving.

You had to do a lot this year as Aegon. What is more challenging as a performer: the big physical, loud, emotional scenes from earlier in the season or the quieter ones after Aegon’s injuries?
Glynn-Carney: Both for different reasons. I dunno, that’s like comparing badminton with tennis, two very different sports. In terms of stamina, probably the louder, more kind of theatrical scenes. They require a lot of focus and a lot of energy and usually emotional depth and agility. But saying that, when I’m in the bed, covered in all the prosthetics and stuff, that’s tiring in its own way and difficult to remain focused on the task at hand. So yeah, both have their own challenges, but I revel in both arenas.

My last question, and I would not forgive myself if I didn’t ask this, what happened to Aegon’s terrible little mustache from Fire & Blood?
Glynn-Carney: :laughs: Good question. You know what? I had this conversation with Amanda Knight, the wonderful hair and makeup designer on the show. We spoke about this at the start, about whether we could bring that to life, because I remember seeing pictures of him. And she was like, “You know what? You might not want to sustain that for the amount of time that we do this show. So maybe let’s go clean shaven and see where we get from there.” But that’s not to say that it might not come at some point, even though he has had his face burned, it might be half a mustache, but we’ll see.

BORDERLANDS Debuts to 0% on Rotten Tomatoes, Hugh Jackman Is Haunted by Wolverine, and Other News Odds & Ends
The Boy and the Heron finally sets a US streaming release date. Meanwhile, Baldur’s Gate 3‘s Karlach and Astarion strike out on their own adventure (and also get featured on Magic cards). New Disney American Girl dolls have arrived. So did Borderlands, but not to great applause. Here are all these news odds & ends, and more.
Borderlands
The Borderlands movie reviews have started to arrive and things don’t look too great for the movie. Borderlands debuted on Rotten Tomatoes with a 0% rating (and remained there after more than 20 reviews had been shared). It has since climbed up to 7%.
The CEO of Take-Two, the company that owns Gearbox, which created and owns the Borderlands franchise, is not despairing, though. Strauss Zelnick notes, “Let’s give the film a chance. A lot of people worked really hard on it. The underlying intellectual property is phenomenal, the cast is amazing, and I think the look and feel are really terrific. So let’s see what audiences have to say.”
It’s always possible the audience score and the critical score could be vastly different. But that is quite a rocky start for Borderlands.
Deadpool & WolverineOne of the funniest “jokes” in Deadpool & Wolverine involved the idea that Hugh Jackman would play Wolverine for Marvel Studios until he was 85. Whether or not that’s the reality of things, Hugh Jackman is mentally preparing himself for it. Check out his dread-filled Instagram post that simply says, 2058. Good luck with playing Old Man Logan, Hugh Jackman. The concept is right there, after all…
Pierre EscargotThe people spoke, and Kenan Thompson brought back Pierre Escargot. It’s pretty hoh-hoh-hilarious. Check it out above.
Disney x American Girl
American Girls have been icons of the doll world for generations. And now they’re teaming up with some even bigger super stars. That’s right, you can now American Girl versions of Ariel, Cinderella, and Tiana. And newly added to the collection are Frozen‘s Anna and Elsa and Rapunzel. Hayao Miyazaki’s award-winning film The Boy and the Heron is finally coming to streaming in the US. The Studio Ghibli movie will stream on Max beginning on September 6. It joins the rest of the Studio Ghibli library exclusively available on the streamer.
A synopsis of the The Boy and the Heron shares:
Baldur’s Gate 3After losing his mother in a hospital fire, young Mahito moves to his family’s estate in the countryside. There, a series of mysterious events lead him to a secluded and ancient tower, home to a mischievous gray heron. When Mahito’s new stepmother disappears, he follows the gray heron into the tower, and enters a fantastic world shared by the living and the dead. As he embarks on an epic journey with the heron as his guide, Mahito must uncover the secrets of this world, and the truth about himself. Featuring the voices of Christian Bale, Dave Bautista, Gemma Chan, Willem Dafoe, Karen Fukuhara, Mark Hamill, Robert Pattinson, and Florence Pugh.
Two of your favorite Baldur’s Gate 3 companions, Karlach and Astarion, recently teamed up to go on an adventure all their own. Samantha Béart, who voices Karlach, and Neil Newbon, who voices Astarion, participated in GenCon’s live Dungeons & Dragons show and explored what the duo might get up to if Tav didn’t invite them into their party. The description for the video shares, “Astarion and Karlach from Baldur’s Gate 3 strike out on their own adventure after Tav doesn’t choose them for their adventuring party, meeting new friends and encountering challenges as they explore the Underdark.”

Sounds delightful!
Baldur’s Gate 3 (Again)
Speaking of Astarion and Karlach, the Baldur’s Gate 3 pair will be featured in a Magic: The Gathering Secret Lair drop celebrating Dungeons & Dragons. The Secret Lair x Dungeons & Dragons® 50th Anniversary Superdrop will feature, among others, the following two cards:
Secret Lair x Dungeons & Dragons®: Astarion’s Thirst Secret Lair x Dungeons & Dragons®: Karlach’s RageWe can’t wait to roll for these. This Secret Lair drop will arrive on August 27.
Terrifier 3Terrifier 3 released a teaser trailer for its Christmas-themed outing. In addition to many jump scares, it includes Art the Clown making blood angels… Very festive.

Terrifier 3 releases on October 11. Its description notes, “In Cineverse and Bloody Disgusting’s Terrifier 3, directed once again by Damien Leone, Art the Clown (David Howard Thornton) is set to unleash another round of chaos on the unsuspecting residents of Miles County as they peacefully drift off to sleep on Christmas Eve.”

DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE Director Shawn Levy Confirms Which Marvel Actors Weren’t Asked to Return
Deadpool & Wolverine saw a metric ton of cameos from Marvel movies of yore, mostly from 20th Century Fox. The jaws of fans everywhere collectively dropped when Wesley Snipes, Jennifer Garner, Channing Tatum, Dafne Keen, and Chris Evans appeared on screen portraying their old Marvel characters. But as many returning actors as there were, there were a few who didn’t make the cut. Some actors (shockingly) Marvel never asked. While appearing on Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast, director Shawn Levy confirmed who he asked to return, and which actors he never thought to ask back.
Sir Patrick Stewart as Professor Charles Xavier
Rumors were swirling around all year about Patrick Stewart returning as Professor X. Yet despite those rumors, Shawn Levy never really entertained Stewart returning for Deadpool & Wolverine. On the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Levy even said ” He was never even discussed.” Although he did say actress Emma Corin, who plays Xavier’s evil twin sister Cassandra Nova, studied his performance carefully.
Liev Schreiber as Sabretooth
Despite Liev Schreiber working with Shawn Levy on another project right now, the director confirmed he never invited him to come back as Sabretooth. He played a version of the feral mutant killer in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. His return was nixed simply because one of the film’s writers, Zeb Wells, had a fondness for the Tyler Mane version from the original X-Men.
The Original X-Men Cast
Speaking of the OG X-Men cast, despite all the online reports of Halle Berry, James Marsden, Famke Janssen, and Anna Paquin returning to the roles of Storm, Cyclops, Jean Grey, and Rogue, respectively, Shawn Levy said he never considered them. This only lends fuel to the fire that Kevin Feige plans to “retire them” in another project.
James McAvoy as Professor Charles Xavier
A different Charles Xavier, James McAvoy, also confirmed that they never invited him back However, he did have to sign off on the use of his footage for the end credits montage. He told Variety, when asked about Marvel Studios asking if could return, “No, no, no, no. Not this one. I don’t think so. If there was a world, they clearly threw that idea out the window before calling me, so no.”
Nicolas Cage as Ghost Rider
Not an X-Men character, or even a Fox Marvel hero, but Ryan Reynolds confirmed that he had conversations with Nicolas Cage returning as Ghost Rider. Without quite elaborating on what became of those conversations. All Reynolds would say to Collider was “It came to a conversation for sure. Yeah, but no.” Maybe Cage didn’t want another CGI Superman situation like in The Flash? We wouldn’t blame him.

We wouldn’t be shocked to hear of other cut cameos, or characters that were not even considered. But hey, Avengers: Secret Wars might have everyone in it! It’s not too late to see old Marvel actors one last time.

Is AVENGERS: DOOMSDAY and SECRET WARS Gearing Up to Be an Avengers/X-Men Crossover?
After the billion-dollar success of Deadpool & Wolverine, officially bringing in the Fox mutants into the larger story, the big question is “What’s next?” for mutants in the MCU? After all, with all the most iconic Fox-era X-Men not showing up in the film, it’s pretty clear that Kevin Feige is saving the A-list X-Men for a more proper farewell. And that solution involves putting the Avengers and the X-Men on screen together at last, almost certainly in Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars.

Yes, the return of Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom is a big way of keeping this new momentum going for the MCU after Deadpool & Wolverine. But if Kevin Feige really wanted to make the next two Avengers films an event that even the most jaded and burnt-out MCU fans would have to check out in theaters? It will be a proper Avengers/X-Men crossover. Or to be more accurate, an Avengers/Fantastic Four/X-Men crossover, as we now know the FF will star in Doomsday and Secret Wars as well. Certain hints that have popped up recently suggest Earth’s Mightiest Heroes and Marvel’s Mutants are headed for a collision course with multiversal ramifications.
The X-Men Hints So Far in the MCU
Since Disney acquired Fox back in 2019, fans have been asking “So when are the X-Men coming to the MCU?” Even She-Hulk asked it in her own show. And so far, Marvel Studios has been playing the long game, not jumping into anything. We got the mutant hint in Ms. Marvel, and Patrick Stewart as Charles Xavier in Multiverse of Madness. Heck, we’re not convinced that Evan Peters’ Quicksilver in WandaVision isn’t more than he seems and not just a gag. The biggest, of course, is Hugh Jackman returning as Wolverine in Deadpool & Wolverine, along with a metric ton of Fox Marvel mutants.

So why do we think the classic Fox X-Men are back for another go-round? First off, The Marvels revealed yet another connection to the X-Men universe with the return of Kelsey Grammar as Beast, working in the X-mansion from the original films. If this is indeed Earth-10005, Deadpool & Wolverine left that universe with a Logan from another timeline in it. Also, Monica Rambeau is stuck there as well. We call those incursion events. With incursion events suggesting a collision between Earth-10005 and Earth-616 is imminent, that can only mean we’re getting an Avengers vs. X-Men project. An announcement of that magnitude would stop all talk of “Marvel Fatigue” dead in its tracks. Just from a mercenary business perspective, it makes sense. But frankly, it’s also a story Marvel fans have waited decades to see.
Will These MCU Mutants Be the X-Men We Know? The big question is, which X-Men are we dealing with here? Beast was working in a lab that looked identical to the underground medical bay in the Fox X-Men films. The Charles Xavier we saw in Doctor Strange on Earth-838 seemed very reminiscent of the one from X-Men: The Animated Series. But the Scarlet Witch killed that Charles. Obviously, the Charles that the Beast refers to seems to be very much alive. So, this is another hint that Beast is in the classic X-Men movie universe, not Earth-838. Or, at least, a version of the classic Fox X-Men world. And yes, we know his appearance looks different. We remind you that the look of comic book Beast is continually evolving. No reason to think the live-action Henry McCoy would be any different.
X-Men: Days of Future Past May Hold the Answer
Fans of the Fox X-Men films know that the timeline and continuity of those films are a bit of a mess. And that’s putting it mildly. But at the end of X-Men: Days of Future Past, Logan’s adventures in the past caused him to wake up in a new present. Essentially, a “happy ending” future, where Xavier is still alive. The school was open, and former tragically dead X-Men like Cyclops and Jean Grey were alive and well. In fact, Kelsey Grammer’s Beast was there too, in a cameo moment. All of this scene takes place canonically in 2023. The “Winchester Incident,” where Charles Xavier accidentally killed hundreds of people with his powers, as described in Logan, happened in 2028. In the Earth-10005 of Deadpool & Wolverine, a functioning X-Men team is still out there. Probably the same one Beast is a part of in The Marvels.

Given one of the music cues in The Marvels’ post-credits scene is from Days of Future Past, we think that they’re trying to tell us that we’re in that “happy ending” reality from that film. A reality that takes the best elements of the original movies and loses the things viewers hated. Mainly, the random and arbitrary deaths of the main X-Men. Not to mention, comic book-accurate costumes like the ones we saw for Logan and Gambit in Deadpool & Wolverine. So, it’s a “new” X-Men timeline, simply made up of bits and pieces of the old one. And part of what it’s keeping is the classic actors. The rest is up to the Russo Brothers.
Deadpool & Wolverine May Set the Stage for an Avengers/X-Men: Battle Royale
Now that Deadpool & Wolverine has come out, we know all the Fox mutants who appeared in it were secondary characters. If this was meant as the fond farewell to the Fox X-Men universe, it seems extremely odd that Kevin Feige didn’t include any of the big guns. Until you realize it’s probably because he’s saving them for Doomsday/Secret Wars. And we understand his reasoning here. If you’re going to bring back the classic X-Men cast, like Patrick Stewart and Halle Berry, it seems only using them in small roles in Deadpool & Wolverine is a waste. No, we think there are much bigger plans afoot.
Jonathan Hickman’s Avengers and Secret Wars Will Likely Be Adapted
The 2015 event comic Secret Wars, and its lead-up Avengers story, “Time Runs Out,” both by writer Jonathan Hickman, began when incursions across the Multiverse resulted in its total destruction. Eventually, there were only two realities left—the classic 616, and Earth 1610, home of Marvel’s Ultimate Universe. Eventually, both of those realities had to do battle with each other to determine which one would get to live. Spoiler alert—neither reality gets to live, and Doctor Doom fuses what remains of them (as well as a few others) together into a new “Battleworld.” And with Doctor Doom confirmed as the main villain of the next two Avengers films, an adaptation of this part of the story seems even more likely than ever.

In Doomsday and Secret Wars, we could get a version of that story. But it would be the MCU Earth vs the Fox X-Men Earth. Earth-616 (The Sacred Timeline) and Earth-10005 (X-Men Earth) battling it out. Somehow, the Fantastic Four will be part of this also. The protectors of each reality would have to fight for the existence of their world. Much like Captain America: Civil War, neither side would be wrong. A scenario familiar to the returning Russo Brothers, as well as writer Stephen McFeely. Who wouldn’t fight to protect everyone they know from total annihilation? In an Infinity Wars-type cliffhanger, we could see both realities fade to white, presumably destroyed. A sixth Avengers film could open on Battleworld, a hodgepodge reality made of elements of both universes. It would be an excuse to bring back anybody they wanted.
X-Men vs. Avengers: A Battle Fans Have Waited Decades to SeeFrom a pure fan point of view, the battles would be cant-miss events. Thor vs. Storm, Wolverine vs. Hulk, Scarlet Witch vs. Phoenix, etc. And yes, an all-star lineup of Avengers vs. an all-star lineup of X-Men is a lot of characters. But let us remind you that Civil War juggled 18 principal characters. Infinity War and Endgame showcased 30, and somehow gave everyone something to do. So an Avengers/X-Men crossover could absolutely work. No wonder Kevin Feige gave Civil War, Infinity War, and Endgame screenwriter Stephen McFeely a call. He, along with his writing partner Christopher Markus, was extremely adept at juggling so many superheroes cohesively, and giving emotional character stakes to these comic book battles.
After Secret Wars, the MCU will almost certainly reboot. Even if it’s a soft reboot. A new X-Men film will likely feature brand-new versions of the characters. But the classics will still get their swan song moment before that happens. The original X-Men films truly started the Marvel superhero craze in cinemas after Blade proved to the general audience that it could be done. It led to Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy, and ultimately, the MCU. If Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars are intended to bring an end to not just one era of storytelling, but going back even before the MCU, what better way to go out than with a bang?

Who Are Sidewinder and the Serpent Society? New MCU Villains Explained
A new villainous organization called the Serpent Society is making its Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in Captain America: Brave New World. They’re a group of snake-themed bad guys led by Giancarlo Esposito’s Sidewinder who have a long and colorful history in Marvel Comics. In 2015, MCU boss Kevin Feige jokingly revealed the title of Captain America 3 to be Captain America: Serpent Society before showing it was actually going to be Captain America: Civil War. But now it’s no laughing matter. The Serpent Society are making their MCU debut for real. Here’s everything you need to know about Sidewinder and the Serpent Society before Captain America 4 slithers into theaters on February 14, 2025.

Since their comic book debut, the Serpent Society’s group of snake-themed bad guys have made a striking impression on the Marvel Universe. They possess monstrous appearances and a variety of squeezing, paralyzing, and poisoning superpowers. The villainous Seth Voelker, aka Sidewinder, created the Serpent Society to be more than just a group of snake-themed evil-doers. He structured the group like a trade union and made it far more organized than your standard gang of goons. The society offered profit sharing, health insurance, and kept its members out of prison thanks to Sidewinder’s teleportation ability. That’s what has made them such an enduring menace to Captain America and Marvel’s other heroes over the years. They’ve been referred to as the “Avengers of the Underworld” and have been hired as muscle by the Kingpin, the mafia, and HYDRA.

Before we get to the origins of the Serpent Society, we have to talk about its predecessor, the Serpent Squad. In 1972’s Captain America #163, the villain Viper created the Serpent Squad to take revenge on Captain America and the Falcon for imprisoning his criminal brother, the Eel. (Yes, eels aren’t snakes, but they’re close enough to fit the theme so we give this a pass.) They were aided by the Cobra who was previously a villain to Thor.

After their initial defeat, the team would reform with new snake-themed members joining over the years. They were little more than a group of disgruntled criminals in snake costumes. The team became much more than that when their number later merged into the Serpent Society. They made their big debut in 1985’s Captain America #310. Under the leadership of Sidewinder they became a formidable evil organization resembling a labor union. In the 2014 relaunch of Captain America in which former Falcon Sam Wilson takes up Steve Rogers’ shield, rebranded the Serpent Society. A new Viper (previously Madame Hydra) dubbed the team Serpent Solutions. This iteration offered their services to big corporations to do their dirty work and used legal loopholes to absolve them of any wrongdoing.

At San Diego Comic-Con 2024, actor Giancarlo Esposito revealed that his Captain America: Brave New World character is Seth Voelker, better known as Sidewinder. In the comics, Seth Voelker started off as an unassuming economics professor from Kenosha, Wisconsin. His life took an unexpected turn when he failed to make tenure, taking a job at the shady Roxxon Oil Company. He discovered the corporation’s illegal activities and volunteered to undergo a mutagenic experiment that changed his physiology into that of a snake.
Sidewinder’s first comic book appearance came in 1980’s Marvel Two-in-One #64. Roxxon hired him to launch a surprise attack on the Fantastic Four’s Thing and his undersea ally Triton in order to steal a mystic artifact called the Serpent Crown. After a stint working for Roxxon, Sidewinder used his business savvy and strategic skills to start and lead his own criminal organization full of fellow snake-like baddies, the Serpent Society.
Sidewinder’s Powers and Abilities
Even though Voelkner transformed into a snake-man, the extreme change to his body didn’t grant him any super powers. Sidewinder’s powers come from the equipment given to him by Roxxon. A technologically-advanced cape grants Sidewinder the ability to teleport. His bullet-proof armor gives him durability during combat. Sidewinder made great use of his teleportation ability by continually rescuing his teammates from incarceration. Voelkner’s key traits are his shrewd intelligence and his ability as a tactician, which he used to elevate the Serpent Society from a rag-tag group of criminals to an enduring trade union of supervillains.
Other SidewindersSeth Voelker is the original Sidewinder, but as is tradition in Marvel comics, other characters have picked up the mantle over the years. One successor was a flash-in-the-pan who made his debut and died in the same issue while trying to infiltrate S.H.I.E.L.D. We never even learned his real name. The other Sidewinder is Gregory Bryan, who filled the teleporter role in the Serpent Society’s ranks after the original Sidewinder retired. He never took to the position of leader like Voelker. Instead he worked for Viper when she rebranded the business as Serpent Solutions.

As one would expect, the Serpent Society’s roster includes many snake-themed villains. Each member’s powers came from their snake of choice. The original team featured the teleporting Sidewinder, superstrong Anaconda, venom-blasting Asp, telepathic Black Mamba, cybernetic Bushmaster, speedy King Cobra, bionic-jawed Cottonmouth, poisonous Death Adder, acrobatic Diamondback, shock-wave emitting Rattler, and electrifying Princess Python. It’s worth noting that Sidewinder’s love interest was fellow member Tanya Sealy, aka Black Mamba. Viper later joined the society with her crew including Black Racer, Boomslang, Coachwhip, Copperhead, Fer-de-Lance, Puff Adder, Rock Python, and Slither.
The Serpent Society’s Beef with Captain AmericaThe Serpent Squad started out as Captain America villains with a grudge against the Sentinel of Liberty. Though the organization had gone on to become a threat to the greater Marvel Universe, things were always personal when it came to Cap. Sidewinder often found his group in conflict with Captain America, but when the ever-ambitious Viper staged a coup and overthrew Sidewinder, he found himself with nowhere else to turn. Sidewinder decided to team up with Steve Rogers (then known as the Captain) to strike back at Viper. After the whole Viper debacle resolved, Sidewinder retired from the Serpent Society and accepted Cap’s help to raise money to treat his cancer-stricken daughter.

Serpent Solutions was the first big threat that Sam Wilson faced when he became Captain America. Later in the controversial 2016 Captain America storyline where Steve Rogers declared his allegiance to HYDRA, Serpent Solutions played a part in HYDRA’s rise to power and takeover of the planet. This all happens in the comic event series Secret Empire.
Giancarlo Esposito’s New Take on Sidewinder“I can finally unleash it. I am the King of the Serpent Society; I am Sidewinder!” Giancarlo Esposito revealed to a crowd of Marvel fans at San Diego-Comic Con 2024. He appears to be playing a new version of Sidewinder that’s quite different from how he’s depicted in the comics. Comic book fans have pointed out that Esposito’s orange jacket collar evokes his snakey comic book costume. But that’s as snake-like as Esposito gets, at least from what we’ve seen so far from the trailers for Captain America: Brave New World.
Esposito isn’t wearing any prosthetics, so he appears as a normal man rather than an anthropomorphic snake. That’s not to say Esposito won’t eventually transform to something a bit more scaly later in the movie. The mad scientist the Leader, played by the returning Tim Blake Nelson from The Incredible Hulk, certainly has the skills to make that happen. We already know Captain America: Brave New World will see Harrison Ford’s President Ross transform into the Red Hulk. So who’s to say Sidewinder won’t turn into a snake-man?

Sidewinder appears to be more hands-on in the MCU than his comic book counterpart. “I have the ability in this to show not only my brain but to show my physicality. I have the tools; I know how to use them. You’ve never seen me this way,” Esposito told Total Film. Esposito’s character uses guns and knives out in the field, whereas the comics version of Sidewinder tended to stay behind plotting from Serpent Society headquarters and only pop in and out of danger with his teleportation cloak. Curiously, Esposito referred to his character as the “King” of the Serpent Society, which isn’t a title the character ever adopted in the comics. Perhaps it’s an apt moniker for a snake villain because it evokes the deadly king cobra.

GODZILLA: MINUS ONE Shoes Are Now Available for You to Buy
Get ready to stomp on buildings like Godzilla himself because the epic Godzilla: Minus One shoes you saw on the Oscars red carpet are now available for purchase. In case you missed it, let’s catch you up. The entire Godzilla: Minus One team came to the Oscars with the best fashion statement of all: shoes inspired by Godzilla: Minus One, which feature our favorite monster decorating the heel. And honestly, they are some of the best bits of nerdy fashion I’ve seen in a minute. Let’s roar into more details on the shoe and, more importantly, how you can own it.
The Godzilla: Minus One ShoesHere are the Godzilla: Minus One shoes in action. As you can see, the shoe works for both men and women by simply swapping out a normal heel with a Godzilla claw. Why didn’t we think of that?

These shoes are obviously god-tier—some might say Kaiju-tier. Not only do they look intensely epic, but they are also very sensible heels. Godzilla salutes this fashion and function decision. And we salute this truly iconic nerdery. Godzilla: Minus One deserved to win its Oscar, the first for the Godzilla franchise, for many reasons. But if nothing else, we would have voted for its victory simply for these shoes.
Can You Buy the Godzilla: Minus One Shoes?Of course, the next natural question is, are these amazing Godzilla: Minus One shoes for sale? And the answer is yes. The Godzilla: Minus One shoes are now officially for sale. A release shares, “Toho International, the distributor behind the Academy Award-winning Godzilla Minus One, has partnered with Japanese fashion brand ha | za | ma to release handcrafted luxury footwear and apparel inspired by the film.”

Fans in the US can pre-order these Godzilla: Minus One fashion pieces through Godzilla.com until August 29. Two kinds of Godzilla shoes are available, the “Dress Shoes of Destiny” and the “Heeled Pumps of Destiny.” Both feature Godzilla’s hand functioning as the heel. But getting a Kaiju to prop up your foot does not come cheap. These Godzilla: Minus One shoes cost $725 and $650, respectively. That’s a pretty penny!
If you want to own the Godzilla: Minus One shoes, you’d better act fast. They’ll only be available until August 29.
More About the Designer of the Godzilla ShoesThe designer responsible for the shoes stepped forward to reveal themselves earlier in the year after it was clear there was much love for the Godzilla heel. Matsui Ryosuke was the designer who created the Godzilla: Minus One footwear. It seems that Matsui Ryosuke actually has actually designed many shoes with unique heels including hands for heels and vampire teeth for heels. But by the looks of things, Matsui Ryosuke created a Godzilla shoe and a Godzilla boot.

The designer shared on Twitter, “Thank you very much for paying attention to the shoes we made. We created these shoes in collaboration with “Godzilla Minus One.” There is a possibility that we may be able to sell the stock in a little while, so if you are interested, please wait for information from us.” In a later statement, he noted, “We are considering selling Godzilla shoes in some form overseas around the summer.” And now they’re here!

Heavy Metal Comes to Middle-earth with ‘The Last Ballad of Damrod’ From THE RINGS OF POWER Season 2 Soundtrack
Some people might find the inclusion of a hard-hitting Heavy Metal song into the world of Middle-earth a bit confusing. But Tolkien’s works and fantasy as a genre have long influenced Metal music. And in return Heavy Metal has been the favored genre of many a fantasy fan. And so, it is not at all confusing, but really more of a fitting full-circle moment for composer Bear McCreary to bring Heavy Metal into the soundtrack for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season two with the powerful “The Last Ballad of Damrod.” Damrod, of course, is a new enemy in The Rings of Power season two, a troll like we’ve never seen before.
You can listen to the Hill-troll’s anthem below.
From the powerful blowing horns one might associate with orcs right into Heavy Metal screaming, we admit we are pretty obsessed. We’ll definitely be head-banging to this Metal beat all throughout The Rings of Power season two. We can’t make out all the lyrics, but we’ll be sure to report back when we do. But obviously, this jam isn’t really about the words, but about the feeling of intense darkness and chaos it evokes. Just how “The Last Ballad of Damrod” fits into The Rings of Power season two, we’ll have to wait and see. But it sure does seem like a tune that goes very well with a battle scene.

For “The Last Ballad of Damrod,” McCreary assembled an all-star Heavy Metal team including, Heavy Metal vocalist Jens Kidman of MESHUGGAH and drummer Gene Hoglan of Dethklok fame and more. And yep, this certainly sounds like the bad-ass anthem of a Lord of the Rings troll, especially one as mighty as Damrod. As McCreary says, “Kidman screams the way an expert violinist plays.”
For more on the making of this incredible part of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season two soundtrack, you can check out the video above. For more on how metal and Middle-earth go together, head to the Twitter thread below.
If you look at the formations of various sub-metal genres you'll notice that Tolkien's works have consistently influenced songs (look at the song lists for various Blind Guardian albums), albums (BG's 'Nightfall in Middle-earth', and band names (Burzum, Amon Amarth).

Now we just really want Adar and Sauron to start a Metal band in Mordor sometime during The Rings of Power season two. Yes?/Yes? The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power premieres on August 29. Meanwhile, The Rings of Power’s season two soundtrack (metal song inclusive) will be released on August 23.

TED LASSO Season 4 Could Happen… If Jason Sudeikis Wants to Return
Ted Lasso captured the hearts of countless fans who tuned in to watch it throughout three emotional seasons. Who knew that a show about an American football coach going to coach soccer (a sport he knew nothing about) could cause such feels? The series became a bright spot in these chaotic pandemic years for sure. We bid farewell to the series back in 2023 but it seems there’s a possibly for Ted Lasso season four, if Jason Sudeikis wants to do it.

In an interview with Collider, Ted Lasso co-creator Bill Lawrence said he would be down for a season four but it is up to the show’s star, Jason Sudeikis. “Whatever Jason feels like doing and whatever his decision is, we’re all down with it,” Lawrence said. “Not only is he the star, he’s the head writer, and he’s also the dude whose life just has to be completely overhauled and moved to a foreign country with young children.”
The door has always seemed open for another season of Ted Lasso. Warner Bros. and Apple TV+ powers that be have said they are open to it as long as there’s just cause for more story. And, let’s be honest, who doesn’t want a show that brings in money and awards acclaim? Will Ted Lasso get another round? We shall see if Jason Sudeikis wants to do it.

Sadie Sink Says Max Will ‘Run’ in STRANGER THINGS 5
It feels like Stranger Things has been a phenomenon for as long as we can remember. But now, our favorite party is all grown up, and the time has come for the series’ last chapter. Stranger Things 5 will be the Netflix hit’s final season, but we have no doubt that these concluding episodes will have a ton of meat on their bones.
One character whom everyone is curious about is Max. Season four left her with broken limbs and in a coma but we do know that Sadie Sink has been filming with her co-stars. So, how will Max show up in Stranger Things 5? Sadie didn’t give away spoilers to Variety but she did hint that Max will be back in action again.

They love having me run,” she affirmed. “That’s all I’ll say.” Of course, we don’t know exactly how that will happen. Will Max be running in the Upside Down or in some sort of Void? Or will she come out of her coma to run again at some point? Who knows.

For now, let’s roll for initiative and head back to Hawkins one more time. Here’s everything we know about Stranger Things 5.
Stranger Things 5‘s PlotStranger Things 4 ended with a bang as the Upside Down erupted right into the middle of Hawkins. Although everyone came together to try to stop Vecna, the villainous monster, who is actually One, who is actually Henry Creel, succeeded in merging his evil world with the reality every day people inhabit. The party managed to injure Vecna and seemingly save Max from his clutches. However, the fallout remained apocalyptic. In the final moments of the season, the Upside Down’s ash arrives to cover everything, and a full-out war with the monstrous creatures of the dark world seems imminent.

While we don’t know much about Stranger Things 5 yet, we assume it will have just a little to do with how Stranger Things 4 ended. The Duffer brothers haven’t provided many plot specifics but have offered several teases about Stranger Things 5. Among other bits, they shared that the action will remain centered in Hawkins and that likely we’ll see an eight-episode season. Additionally, the Duffers have noted that Will Byers will take a central role in the final season.
Finally, the series’ creators describe Stranger Things 5 as follows, “Five, the way we see it, is kind of a culmination of all the seasons, so it’s sort of got a little bit from each… Whereas before, each season was so [distinct]… [Season] 3 is our big summer blockbuster season with big monsters, and [Season] 4 was the psychological horror. Five, the way we see it, is kind of a culmination of all the seasons, so it’s sort of got a little bit from each. I think that what we’re trying to do is go back to the beginning a little bit, in sort of the tone of 1.” Or, “Season 5 is like if season 1 and 4 had a baby. And then that baby was injected with steroids.” Make of that what you will.
You can take an official look at the season with a new behind-the-scenes featurette celebrating Stranger Things 5.
Behind the ScenesOf course, the Duffer brothers, Matt and Ross Duffer, will once again take the helm of Stranger Things 5. Additionally, long-time Stranger Things director Shawn Levy will return to direct at least one episode of the season. Superstitiously, the Deadpool 3 director likes to take on episodes three and four if he can.
Ross Duffer is giving us a few peeks behind-the-scenes of Stranger Things 5. This includes a very rad photo of Steve in front of a radio station, a shred bin with a photo of our dearly departed Eddie shredding on his guitar, and some other fun bits. It makes us super excited for what’s to come.
Stranger Things 5‘s Cast
All our favorite characters and actors will be back for Stranger Things 5. We know for sure that Joyce Byers, Jim Hopper, Mike Wheeler, Nancy Wheeler, Jonathan Byers, Eleven, Lucas Sinclair, Dustin Henderson, Will Byers, Karen Wheeler, Stever Harrington, Robin Buckley, and Murray Bauman will be back. (And with them, their respective actors.) Sadie Sink’s Max survived season four and should return with the rest. We, of course, are still holding the torch for the surprise resurrection of Joseph Quinn’s Eddie Munson. Stranger Things takes place in a supernatural world, after all. And it just wouldn’t be a good season without one Erica Sinclair.

When it comes to new faces, we know that Linda Hamilton has joined the cast of Stranger Things 5. But her role remains a secret for now. Additionally, Nell Fisher, Jake Connelly, and Alex Breaux have joined the cast.
Stranger Things 5‘s Release Date
Stranger Things 5 does not yet have a release date, but it will not arrive in 2024.
