ALIEN: ROMULUS Is Coming Out on VHS Tape
The latest Alien franchise film, Alien: Romulus, is being released as a limited edition VHS on Dec. 3. This is very unexpected, especially in today’s physical media market. With DVDs and CDs also struggling to create a market for themselves, this VHS focuses more on nostalgia than anything. The release celebrates the 45th anniversary of the Alien series.

Directors Ridley Scott, James Cameron, and David Fincher originally released the earlier Alien films on VHS in the 80s and 90s, evoking strong memories of the format. The limited edition VHS will feature the classic 4×3 aspect ratio, matching the format of the other VHS tapes. Movie poster artist Matt Ferguson completed the box art for the VHS packaging.

During the Alien and Alien: Romulus double feature at the Aero Theatre presented by Beyond Fest and the American Cinematheque, director Fede Álvarez gave a video introduction. In the video, Álvarez said a big studio last released a VHS in 2006 with David Cronenberg’s A History of Violence, originally released in 2005.
Following the screening, there was a Q&A featuring David Jonsson, Isabela Merced, Shane Mahan, Matt Ferguson, and Lee Gilmore. Jim Hemphill, a film historian and writer from IndieWire, moderated the discussion. Jonsson and Merced play characters Andy and Kay, respectively. Mahan was the VFX supervisor, whereas Gilmore acted as the supervising sound editor.

If you’re not really a VHS person but still a physical media lover, no worries! The Steelbook 4K and Blu-ray set and DVD are also releasing on Dec 3. Both of these will come with exclusive features like “featurettes with filmmakers Fede Alvarez and Ridley Scott, behind the scenes content, and alternate and extended scenes.”
If you just want to watch the second highest grossing Alien franchise film at home right now, it is available digitally for rent and purchase on streaming platforms such as Prime Video and AppleTV+.

SUPERGIRL: WOMAN OF TOMROROW Will Be Second Movie in DCU, Summer 2026 Release
The DCU, under new heads James Gunn and Peter Safran, is already shaking things up. Not only is Peacemaker season two coming out ahead of the Waller series, but there is officially a different film following Gunn’s Superman. That title goes to Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, the adaptation of Tom King and Bilquis Evely’s astonishingly good miniseries of the same name. According to Deadline, the movie will come out June 26, 2026.
During NYCC 2024, Gunn spoke about the Supergirl movie and said it is “a completely different, unique take on a superhero.” We know, we know. Every director says their upcoming movie is unique but Gunn does know quality when he sees it.
“[Writer] Anna [Nogueira] came in, and she pitched the story to me of Supergirl, and it was just one of the best pitches I’ve ever heard, and she immediately wrote it,” he said according to a quote from The Hollywood Reporter. “She came in with the first draft that was great, and it’s just gotten better and better. Then [director] Craig [Gillespie] has been incredibly easy to work with, and I can’t wait for that to come out… It’s a three-act structure, so it’s a little bit different than the structure, which kind of goes through various stories, but as all those major characters, the major themes.”
From the House Targaryen to the Kryptonian House of El, actress Milly Alcock, who played the young Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen in the Game of Thrones spinoff House of the Dragon has been cast as Supergirl for DC Studios. She’ll reportedly first appear in a small role in Superman before starring in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. That film will be based on the comic by Tom King and Alcock won the role over Emilia Jones and Meg Donnelly. The latter voiced Supergirl in DC animated films Legion of Superheroes and Crisis on Infinite Earths Part One. The Supergirl movie has also found its director in a very interesting choice, Craig Gillespie.

The Supergirl in the Woman of Tomorrow celebrates her 21st birthday in that series, so at only 23, Alcock is the perfect age in real life to portray that version of the character.
Gunn noted of Alock’s casting as Supergirl, “Strangely, Milly was the FIRST person I brought up to Peter for this role, well over a year ago, when I had only read the comics. I was watching House of the Dragon & thought she might have the edge, grace & authenticity we needed for the DCU’s Supergirl. And now here we are. Life is wild sometimes.”
When it comes to the movie’s director, The Hollywood Reporter notes that Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow will be directed by Craig Gillespie. In the past, Gillespie has directed Disney’s Cruella and the figure skating movie, I, Tonya. Both movies certainly had a distinct style, so it will be fascinating to see what the director does with Supergirl.
The character of Superman’s cousin Kara Zor-El first appeared in 1959, during DC Comics’ Silver Age. She’s been a mainstay of the DC Universe ever since, in one form or another. Supergirl has appeared on the big screen twice before. First in the 1984 film Supergirl, played by Helen Slater, and then in last year’s The Flash, played by Sasha Calle. Of course, Melissa Benoist portrayed Kara Danvers on the CW Arrowverse series Supergirl for six seasons. We’re sure that Milly Alcock will bring her own spin to DC Comics’ iconic heroine.

James Gunn Praises SUPERMAN Actor David Corenswet, Says Trailer Isn’t Too Far Away
Soon, the world will meet a new Clark Kent in Superman. (Formerly titled Superman: Legacy). DC Studios co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran are rebooting the most famous superhero in the world as they transition the franchise from the DCEU to the DCU. Who will play the Man of Steel on the big screen this time around? What kind of story will we see him in? And who will bring it to life? We’re keeping track of all these answers and more.

At an NYCC 2024 panel, Gunn opened about working with David Corenswet, adding Krypto the Superdog to the mix, and hinted that a trailer could be in our near-ish future. (Thank you to The Hollywood Reporter for this quote.)
“Krypto, that’s been something that’s just been amazing,” Gunn said. “We’ve been working with him in the edit. He’s an incredible part of the story to me personally. When I was writing the screenplay, he came in and kind of changed everything up. We’re deep in the process of editing. David Corenswet is going to fucking blow people away. He is the movie star that everyone just dreams he could possibly be. I don’t think anyone really understands the depth of this guy’s talent dramatically, comedically. He’s the best physical action star I’ve probably ever worked with… I feel good about it, and I’m really hard on stuff, so it’s been fantastic… It won’t be too long before we see a trailer, but it also won’t be too soon.”
Gunn also revealed that
Here’s everything we know about Superman so far.
Title
The DCU’s first official movie (though not its first official release) is now titled simply Superman. Of course, the movie began its life as Superman: Legacy. It will kick off the film side of what James Gunn has called the franchise’s first chapter, “Gods and Monsters.” He has also called this movie “the true beginning” of the DCU.
Superman‘s PlotWhile the film still has no official synopsis, Warner Bros. did provide a description of what we can expect from the story, which James Gunn says is not an origin tale.
Superman tells the story of Superman’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. He is the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.
Gunn announced the film with art from the cover of All-Star Superman by writer Grant Morrison and artist Frank Quitely. Whether or not that means the story is influenced, inspired by, or adapted from the 12-issue comic series in any way is unclear. What Gunn has said is the movie will focus on “an earlier part of Superman’s life,” where he is still old enough to already be working for the Daily Planet.
We also have our first look at David Corenswet as the DCU’s Superman.

David Corenswet will play Superman, while Rachel Brosnahan will play Lois Lane.
In addition, four more actors have joined the cast of Superman. Isabela Merced will play Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi will play Mister Terrific, Nathan Fillion will play Green Lantern Guy Gardner, and Anthony Carrigan will play Metamorpho. María Gabriela de Faría will play the villain The Engineer in the movie. Also known as Angela Spica, the character has nanotechnology built into her body. Additionally, Sara Sampaio will play Eve Teschmacher, Skyler Gisondo will play Jimmy Olsen, and Wendell Pierce will play The Daily Planet boss Perry White. Saturday Night Live‘s Beck Bennett will play The Daily Planet‘s sports journalist Steve Lombard. James Gunn has also confirmed that Nicholas Hoult will play Lex Luthor.
James Gunn recently confirmed that one exciting canine character would join the world of the DCU’s Superman this summer. Gunn shared that Krypto the Superdog would be a fixture of the movie and that he would be a pup who is a “not-so-good-good-boy” inspired by Gunn’s own real-life dog, Ozu.
In full, Gunn notes:
Krypto arrives on screens in Superman this summer. Krypto was inspired by our dog Ozu, who we adopted shortly after I started writing Superman. Ozu, who came from a hoarding situation in a backyard with 60 other dogs & never knew human beings, was problematic to say the least. He immediately came in & destroyed our home, our shoes, our furniture – he even ate my laptop. It took a long time before he would even let us touch him. I remember thinking, “Gosh, how difficult would life be if Ozu had superpowers?” – and thus Krypto came into the script & changed the shape of the story as Ozu was changing my life. What better time to debut the not-so-good-good-boy Krypto than #AdoptAShelterDog month. Btw, Ozu today, is, fairly often, a very good boy. #Superman
Gunn also recently confirmed the casting of Ma and Pa Kent on Threads. Pruitt Taylor Vince (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) will play Jonathan Kent, a.k.a. Pa Kent. Meanwhile, Neva Howell will play Martha Kent.
Behind the ScenesJames Gunn wrote the (definitely completed) script and is directing.

Critical Role Celebrates 10th Anniversary with World Tour
Critical Role is back with great news! The live Dungeons & Dragons players are embarking on a world tour to celebrate the series’ 10th anniversary. In 2025, the tour will head to five different cities across the United States and Australia.

The crew will host live shows in Chicago, a suburb of Indianapolis, and New York in the US. In Australia, they will go to Sydney and Melbourne. Matthew Mercer, Ashley Johnson, Marisha Ray, Taliesin Jaffe, Travis Willingham, Sam Riegel, Laura Bailey, and Liam O’Brien from the founding cast will be present at the shows. AEG Presents and Australia Frontier Touring will be producing the tour.
All the US shows will remain as standalone events, whereas the two Australian shows will have a “loose narrative connection,” according to the company. The main campaign parties will cross paths in the Australia shows with separate but connected narratives.
All the shows in the Critical Role tour have a slightly different premise. The show in Indiana will be the first one-shot set in the world of Exandria using the Daggerheart game system. Chicago’s show will have the audience voting on “which original main campaign characters the founding members of Critical Role will play for the evening,” according to Critical Role’s website.

New York’s show will be a wedding between Fjord and Jester. Following the NYC show, the cast will attend New York Comic Con, where they’ll take part in fan signings, offer photo opportunities, and have a panel.
“Embarking on a global journey to bring Critical Role to the stage in brand-new cities with our ragtag group of adventurers is nothing short of a dream. Let alone during our tenth year of telling stories together — I couldn’t imagine a better way to celebrate!,” said Marisha Ray, the co-founder and creative director of Critical Role, as quoted by Variety.
Members of Beacon, a streaming service with Critical Role-produced content, will receive early access to ticket purchases for the shows. Additionally, there are “Fan Experience” tickets that include a 45-minute preshow Q&A with the cast.

Before beginning the world tour, the Critical Role crew has a Christmas show on December 7 in Camden, New Jersey.
To find out more information on the dates and locations of all the shows, you can head over to the Critical Role tour page, where links to the individual city purchasing sights are given along with the time of release.

STAR TREK: STRANGE NEW WORLDS Season 3 Clip Shows the Enterprise in Battle
A nailbiting, season finale cliffhanger has been a true Star Trek tradition since the Borg assimilated Picard back in 1990. And last year, the season two finale of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds kept that tradition going, showing the U.S.S. Enterprise facing off against the Gorn Hegemony. Well, now we have our very first clip of the season three premiere. It picks up right where Captain Pike and crew left off, in a life-or-death battle with their reptilian foes. You can watch this first clip from the season three premiere of Strange New Worlds, which came straight from New York Comic-Con 2024:
The Gorn first appeared in the original Star Trek series back in 1967. And they have largely kept to the periphery ever since. But Strange New Worlds has given them a new lease on life, turning them into something far more terrifying than they ever were before. Of course, we know the Enterprise crew will emerge victorious. If only because we’ve already seen other clips from later episodes in season three. Besides, we know they renewed the show for season four already. So if the Gorn win, that would sure be a depressing next two years of Trek adventures.

Via Deadline, we’ve also learned that Our Flag Means Death actor Rhys Darby is joining the cast in a guest star role. We’re not sure who he’s playing just yet. However, Strange New Worlds has been teasing the addition of Spock’s half-brother Sybok ever since the first season. Season three feels like the right time to introduce him. Sybok was the antagonist in the much-maligned film Star Trek V: The Final Frontier. Then, they never mentioned him again for decades. Nevertheless, he’s a character with a ton of potential, and it would not be a surprise to us if that’s who Rhys Darby is playing.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season three drops on Paramount+ in early 2025.

Max Releases CREATURE COMMANDOS Trailer, Prepares to Kick Off James Gunn’s New DCU
The time has almost come for the new DC Universe, or DCU, to begin. The first series under the umbrella of James Gunn’s new DC world is Creature Commandos, and it will debut on December 5. In celebration of this exciting new chapter of DC’s story, Max has released the official full trailer for Creature Commandos at New York Comic Con. You can check it out below.
In addition to the Creature Commandos trailer, Max also offered us a tantalizing synopsis for the show. The logline for the series shares, “CREATURE COMMANDOS tracks a secret team of incarcerated monsters recruited for missions deemed too dangerous for humans. When all else fails… they’re your last, worst option.“
The worst option for humanity, the most enjoyable option for us fans. Creature Commandos features an all star voice-cast that includes, “Steve Agee as Economos, Maria Bakalova as Princess Ilana, Anya Chalotra as Circe, Zoe Chao as Nina Mazursky, Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr., Sean Gunn as GI Robot & Weasel, David Harbour as Frankenstein, Alan Tudyk as Dr. Phosphorus, Indira Varma as The Bride, and Viola Davis as Amanda Waller.” Creature Commandos is written and executive produced by James Gunn.

In total, Creature Commandos will run for seven episodes, with its series finale hitting on January 16. Strap in; if this Creature Commandos trailer is anything to go by, it’s about to be a wild, dangerous, but seriously enjoyable ride. And since it’s the first outing for James Gunn’s DCU, we’re crossing our fingers it will really knock it out of the park. Creature Commandos might just set the tone for everything else to come.

Join Nerdist and WEBTOON For an NYCC Panel All About The Art of Fear
It’s October. And that means it’s time for things to get a little scary… in the best way. At Nerdist, we agree that fear is an art. And, as new forms of writing and creation develop, that art becomes more complex and intricately beautiful every day. If you’re heading to NYCC this weekend and want to add a little something hauntingly delicious to your schedule, we’d like to invite you to WEBTOON’s panel, The Quiet Page: The Art of Fear. It’ll feature some excellent insights from some of today’s most talented horror comics and novel creators and give you a whole new look at what it takes to successfully bring scares to the page.

Here is the full description of WEBTOON’s NYCC panel:
Horror in film has long employed storytelling devices like the jump-scare, controlled pacing, and suspenseful music to build eerie atmospheres and create a sense of dread. Here Are 13 of the Scariest Horror-Comedy Films in Existence
Horror-comedies are fundamentally comedies. They’re only good if they make us laugh. But some of the very best do more than just tickle our funny bone. They also send shivers up our spines by embracing their spooky side. Which ones are the best at delivering frights alongside humor? These are 13 great horror-comedies that are also scary.
13. TremorsWhy It’s Funny: Trying to escape giant underground monsters with a taste for human flesh is no reason to stop bickering with other people.
Our list kicks off with a film that embraces both horror and comedy equally. Tremors is a retro-style monster flick that offers up real scares and tension even as it’s making us laugh. Getting chased by giant monsters is terrifying. It wasn’t exactly a box office hit when it first came to theaters in 1990, but there’s a reason it’s become a cult classic since.
12. GremlinsWhy It’s Funny: A bunch of magical cuddly creatures turn into terrifying rage monsters with a sense of humor. They’ll get around to killing you when they’re done dressing up as Christmas carolers.
We’re already into sacred horror-comedy ground with our 12th entry, Joe Dante’s seminal 1984 film, Gremlins. It’s so much funnier than it’s given credit for because its sequel is truly absurd. But it’s also much scarier than people remember, too. There are real moments of suspense as Kingston Falls falls into monster chaos. Plus, gremlins are freaking terrifying to look at! They would frighten us in a traditional horror film.

Why It’s Funny: Dan Stevens. There’s lots of other really funny stuff in this movie, but Dan Stevens alone is more than enough.
The most recent release on this list might deserve to be even higher, because while a young ballerina vampire makes for a very funny villain she also makes for a really scary one. Abigail also conjures up genuine frights as “heist gone wrong”/haunted house-style film. And even when things get very silly the movie still offers up traditional horror movie moments.
10. Braindead (a.k.a. Dead Alive)Why It’s Funny: It’s an absurdist zom-com that also doubles as an over-the-top political satire gore-fest.
Before he was making beloved fantasy epics Peter Jackson established himself as a world-class horror-comedy director. The best of his early entries is his 1992 classic Braindead. (Titled Dead Alive in North America.) Silly, tasteless, and loads of fun, this tale of politicians controlled by brain-eating extraterrestrial insects manages to be genuinely unsettling thanks to its massive amounts of gore. This is one blood-soaked, guts-splattered film.
9. The FrightenersWhy It’s Funny: Ghosts eternally trapped in the clothing they died in help a man who can legitimately communicate with the dead run a scam as a professional exorcist.
Peter Jackson goes back-to-back on our list with his fantastic 1997 film The Frighteners. Starring Michael J. Fox, it is full of both horror and comedy, as Jake Busey’s serial killer Johnny Bartlett makes for a truly terrifying villain. He’s not the only scary part of this film, however. It also features some truly creepy visuals, twists, and gruesome murders. If you took out all of the comedy this would be a great traditional horror film.
8. FreakyWhy It’s Funny: A classic body-swap story meets a classic slasher flick and the result is a whole lot of very silly fun and hilarious deaths.
Happy Death Day is a great horror-comedy, but director Christopher Landon land(on)s a spot on this scary list for Freaky. While there are lots of laughs to be found, there are also lots of truly creepy moments. Kathryn Newton is already a horror-comedy icon, but she makes for a genuinely scary slasher in Freaky.

Why It’s Funny: A sick sense of humor is the only way to deal with a deadly outbreak.
Eli Roth’s tribute to classic low-budget horror films turns a skin infection into laughs, but not by sacrificing any of the unsettling creepiness at the core of the film. An isolated cabin in the woods is an inherently scary premise. As is watching a group of young friends turn on each other as they’re ravaged by a truly nightmarish disease. Those elements makes for a genuinely uncomfortable tale. Even when you’re laughing at Cabin Fever you’re recoiling.
6. SlitherWhy It’s Funny: With the right attitude watching someone be turned into an enormous half-alien monster can be wildly entertaining.
Writer-director James Gunn’s first film turned an alien parasite into campy funny, but he didn’t have to sacrifice any scares to make something hilarious. The movie’s grotesque body-horror provides plenty of uncomfortable sequences. Slither‘s transformation result in some truly horrible creatures who put the “horror” in horror-comedy.

Why It’s Funny: A desperate quest for continued online clout results in a silly night at a haunted house with an equally desperate ghost also seeking attention.
Deadstream finds new life in the found footage genre while never quitting on its silly B-movie loving spirit, but it also never stops being genuinely scary, either. Locking someone up in a real haunted house will always and forever creep us out. And this overlooked 2022 release always has us feeling uneasy that even while entertaining us with its equally funny concept.
4. The Cabin in the WoodsWhy It’s Funny: Turns out unleashing monsters on unsuspecting college students is a pretty fun way to spend a weekend.
If The Cabin in the Woods wasn’t funny at all it would be an amazing straight horror film, so no surprise it ranks so high on our list. Director Drew Goddard’s wildly inventive first film combines classic horror tropes to deliver sincere scares even as while he’s satirizing those concepts. The comedic elements of the film don’t undercut any of the horror.
3. CreepshowWhy It’s Funny: A series of silly, over-the-top premises told with a sly sense of humor by two story-telling masters.
Creepshow is one of the best, most important, most sacred horror-comedy movies ever made. How could this anthology film not be when George A. Romero directed a script from Stephen King. Those two horror icons combined to make something memorable that is both fundamentally funny and fundamentally scary. Because even while each vignette feature hilarious visuals and absurd concepts, they’re all told as straight horror. You can laugh at water-soaked zombies who come back for vengeance, but being buried up to your head on the beach is no laughing matter.
2. An American Werewolf in LondonWhy It’s Funny: No horror-comedy has ever done a better job combining broad physical comedy with dead-pan humor.
An American Werewolf in London has a legitimate case as the greatest horror-comedy film ever made, and that’s because even though it’s absolutely hysterical it’s also absolutely terrifying. It features the greatest, most horrific werewolf transformation in movie history. It’s also gory, full of gruesome murders that would give anyone nightmares. And it also boasts a score that stands among the eeriest ever recorded.
1. Evil Dead IIWhy It’s Funny: “Bruce Campbell fights his own hand” perfectly sums up the non-stop comedy of Evil Dead II.
Sam Raimi’s The Evil Dead is a horror film. Army of Darkness is arguably a straight comedy more than a horror-comedy. But Evil Dead II perfectly walks the line between both horror and comedy. It unleashes Bruce Campbell while never abandoning the terrifying core that made the original movie so scary. It might be an outrageously funny sequel, but that cabin is still a nightmare, as is the ancient spirit haunting it. Almost every scene is, somehow, both scary and funny at the same time. It’s a remarkable feat that seems impossible even as you’re watching. Even the famous laughing scene is super creepy even though its super funny!

Evil Dead II is a truly amazing movie, among the best sequels ever made, and we’d be scared to be anything above it on this list.
Now that you’re done reading about the scariest horror-comedies make sure you check out our list of the 13 funniest horror-comedies.

Marvel x MAGIC: THE GATHERING’s Collab Kicks Off with 5 Secret Lair Drops—Storm, Cap, Wolverine and More Lead the Way
We first heard about Magic: The Gathering‘s collaboration with Marvel in October 2023. That’s just about one year ago. At the time, all we had was a brief teaser to go on, but already, everyone was more than excited. And now, this highly anticipated collection finally has its very first cards to show us. Magic: The Gathering has revealed that the first release from its Marvel collaboration will be a Secret Lair drop containing five different Superdrops you can purchase. Each new Magic: The Gathering drop, of course, will revolve around a Marvel hero commander card.

The commanders highlighted in the first Marvel x Magic: The Gathering Secret Lair drop are Captain America, Black Panther, Wolverine, Iron Man, and Storm. Each of these Magic drops will come with at least four additional Marvel-themed cards (which are all reprints from Magic history) that work together well to support their commander. Some of the cards are chosen from their mechanical cohesion, while others are chosen more for theming. And that’s just how we like it!
But naturally, this is only the beginning. Magic: The Gathering has already revealed a Spider-Man-centric tentpole booster release will be coming in 2025. And all of this is just the very start of what the Marvel x Magic: The Gathering collaboration will hold for fans of both worlds.
Without further ado, let’s dive into this first Marvel x Magic Secret Lair card.
Marvel x Magic: The Gathering—Captain America Commander Card Secret Lair Drop
First up in the Marvel x Magic: The Gathering collaboration are the cards that make up the Captain America Secret Lair drop. Captain America is, of course, a noble hero, and so his card is a White mana Magic card, which embodies morality and order. Despite his White association, Cap’s signature red, white, and blue coloring appears throughout his cards. It was too cool to pass up, share the Magic: The Gathering team. But they hope to do some mono-white versions of the cards in the future, should there be more Captain America Magic: The Gathering Cards to come.

In addition to the Captain America Commander card, this Marvel Magic card drop comes with four support cards. These include Sigarda’s Aid as Captain America’s Aid, Flawless Maneuver, In the Trenches, and Sword of War and Peace as Shield of War and Peace. Each of these cards captures the history of Captain America, different moments and different eras of the characters, and, of course, they honor the shield. Mechanically, they also play well together because Captain America cares about equipment.
Additionally, Captain America’s storyline is always going to different places and trying different things in Marvel’s world, and so Magic: The Gathering wanted to make sure to honor Falcon/Sam Wilson as Captain America, especially as he prepares to take flight in his own MCU movie very soon. Other pieces of Cap’s journey, such as his friendship with Bucky Barnes, also receive a place of honor. You can see World War II Bucky in his red and blue sidekick uniform in Captain America’s support card, In the Trenches. Notably, Namor the Mariner and the Human Torch are also featured on this Magic card as a wonderful homage to Captain America’s Marvel Comics history.
Marvel x Magic: The Gathering—Black Panther Commander Card Secret Lair DropNext up is Black Panther. This Magic: The Gathering card is a Green/White card. While Black Panther has a specific color moniker in his name, that mana energy was just not right for our noble king of Wakanda. Instead of Black, T’Challa’s Black Panther Commander card is a Green and White mana blend. This is Magic: The Gathering designation is perfect for the Marvel character as it reflects Black Panther’s deep goodness, as well as his strength, power, and ties to the land and nature of Wakanda.
Black Panther was the trickiest of the Commander Marvel x Magic cards to get right, share Aaron Forsythe, Vice President of Design, and Daniel Nguyen, Senior Product Designer, because his messaging that of a good king guiding his people was more complex and high concept than some of the other collaborations, which were more focused on their combat abilities. But having Black Panther be about as noble and caring as a character can be in Magic: The Gathering felt exactly right.

Black Panther, like Captain America, has a “Hero” creature type, and this is something that Magic: The Gathering has used before, but they’ll be leaning into it much more as the rest of the Marvel card sets roll out. More versions of Black Panther that show him as a leader and as a great fighter will likely come as the Magic: The Gathering x Marvel sets roll out. But for now, the team wanted to focus on him as the ruler of a kingdom that contains the most viable natural resource in the world. The mechanics of Black Panther’s card serve to emulate the vibranium that powers Wakanda.

Black Panther’s support cards also help underscore this theme. These are: Secure the Wastes, Warrior Token, Bast’s Blessing as Primal Figure, and Wakandan Skyscraper as Karn’s Bastion. Additionally, Heroic Intervention is also a support card in this Marvel x Magic: The Gathering drop. While it’s not necessarily mechanically tied in, it’s a Green staple that works really well. The Black Panther version of the card also depicts Black Panther vs. Klaw, and since Klaw is always trying to steal Vibranium, it ties the card into the overall theme. Notably, this is the comic’s version of Klaw. It was very important to Magic: The Gathering that these cards appealed to Marvel Comics fans.
The Black Panther cards also strive to show the eras and versions of the character. Secure the Wastes shows Bashenga, the very first Black Panther back in the Bronze Age, while Karn’s Skyscraper takes us all the way to the modernity of Wakanda.
Finally, a deep cut for you Magic: The Gathering lovers: cat decks are generally green-white in Magic: The Gathering, just like this Marvel Black Panther drop is. Shuri will surely get a kick out of that one.
Marvel x Magic: The Gathering—Wolverine Commander Card Secret Lair Drop
Our next Marvel Commander is Wolverine. The top of this Magic: The Gathering card gives us a truncated version of Wolverine’s very long Marvel catchphrase, “I’m the best there is at what I do, but what I do best isn’t very nice.” Wolverine also gets a “Mutant” and “Bezerker” designation. Both of these have occurred in Magic before but haven’t been used very much. Although the MCU couldn’t use Mutant for a while, Magic: The Gathering is jumping right in. Wolverine also has the “regenerate” ability. Again, this isn’t something Magic uses very much, but it does have it in its history, and it was perfect to use here for this Marvel collaboration.

Wolverine’s card indicates that he loves fighting, really loves fighting, and he never dies. That sounds about right to us. Wolverine’s support cards includes Berzerk, which is a card all the way back from Magic: The Gathering Beta, so it’s a thirty-something-year-old card. It shows Wolverine in his brown and yellow suit, which is a fan favorite, busting out of the head of a Sentinel in an iconic fit of rage. Additionally, Wolverine’s Magic drop has the Right of Passage card. This version of the card shows Laura Kinney, aka X-23. Next up is Rhythm of the Wild. This Marvel Magic version of the card depicts Wolverine as James Howlett, a fun deep-cut for fans, and shows Wolverine running with the wolves. Finally, Wolverine’s drop has The Ozolith as the Adamantium Bonding Tank. This card shows off the Weapon X origin story for Wolverine.
Marvel x Magic: The Gathering—Iron Man Commander Card Secret Lair DropOf course, we couldn’t have a Marvel x Magic: The Gathering collaboration without Iron Man. The Iron Man commander card tips its hat to the MCU movies, showing Tony Stark mid-way through his iconic transformation into Iron Man, with all his suit parts floating around him. (But we also see some of his literal fabric business suit on his arm.) This Iron Man card is built around the idea of artifacts. When he attacks, Iron Man receives a treasure token with a meta value of 0; Iron Man can then sacrifice this to find something a little better. This speaks to Iron Man building and crafting as he attacks. Iron Man himself is an artifact creature, which is something a little different than the other cards.

Iron Man’s supporting Marvel Magic include a Treasure Token, Galvanic Blast, Commander’s Play, Soul Ring, and Inventor’s Fair. Again, these cards depict different eras of Iron Man, and you can see the suit changes throughout the cards. Soul Ring specifically depicts the first arc reactor with its copper rings. It fits really beautifully because Soul Ring is, of course, the quintessential Commander power source, and the arc reactor is the ultimate Iron Man power source. It doesn’t hurt that they’re both rings.

The team also discussed the Iron Man treasure token at some length—the Marvel x Magic team thought about showing a pile of money or a box of arms but eventually decided to stick with the Iron Man armor theme. In a fun, full circle moment, the team also enjoys that the Hasbro Iron Man helmet was shown on a kid trying to stop drones at Stark Expo in Iron Man 2 (theorized to be Spider-Man), and now that same helmet has found its way onto a Marvel Magic card in a new era crossover of the two IPs.
Marvel x Magic: The Gathering—Storm Commander Card Secret Lair Drop
Finally, we have Storm—a mutant hero with flying vigilance. It turns out that Marvel’s Storm could go on a Magic: The Gathering card named Storm. And both Storms are incredibly powerful. The Magic team really wanted to include a character that wasn’t in the MCU, at least so far. They wanted to show that this collaboration really involved the breadth of the comic universe and not just Marvel movie nods. Storm is a beloved character, so it was really exciting to bring her back here.
With Storm, Magic wanted to depict Storm in her purest nature goddess form, connecting with the intense forces of nature and not a hero to be crossed. Storm ended up with a Yellow card designation. Then, her support cards are green, blue, and red, which are colors of weather phenomena in Magic.

But what are Storm’s Marvel x Magic Support Cards? We have Lightning Bolt, which reveals a ’90s punk-era Storm. Next is Jessica’s Well reimagined as Storm’s Well. This card features art which is a callback to the original. Also we have Ice Storm. While Ice Storm isn’t mechanically aligned per se, it adds great flavor and is a deep cut from Magic‘s history. This card comes from Beta and hasn’t been reprinted in a playable form in 30 years. The card also shows Colossus, Bishop, Jean Grey, and Ice Man, in case you were missing some of our other X-Men. Finally, we see Metamorphosis renamed as Ororo Borealis.
Marvel x Magic: The Gathering—Avengers’ Tower CardAlong with the five Secret Lair Drops, Magic: The Gathering‘s first Marvel Secret Lair drop will include Arcane Signet reimagined as Earth’s Mightiest Emblem, a card every Commander needs. On this card, we see a depiction of Avenger’s Tower. This card will be priced at the $200 price span, so if you buy one of each of the Marvel x Magic Secret Lair Drops, you get an Arcane Signet to go with them.
Coming Soon: A Spider-Man Tentpole Booster ReleaseThis is just the beginning of a multi-year partnership, though. Magic: The Gathering has already announced that coming in 2025, we’ll get a tentpole booster release featuring Spider-Man. He did feel absent from the above!
When Will the First Marvel x Magic: The Gathering Cards Be Available for Purchase? You won’t need to wait long to get these drops, either! They’ll be available for purchase November 4.
The Future of the Marvel x Magic: The Gathering CollaborationNarrowing down the first five characters for this Marvel x Magic: The Gathering collaboration was no easy task. But ultimately, the team took over a dozen characters and settled on the first wave. They looked for a balance of concepts, a mix of MCU characters and characters from the comics, and a diverse array of representation. Basically, they wanted the full breadth of what the Marvel universe has to offer to be showcased. Of course, they had no way of knowing that Wolverine was about to become the talk of the MCU town at the time with Deadpool & Wolverine. But they’re not too sorry about it. However, Magic shares that anyone else folks are hoping to see from the Marvel universe, they probably have plans to make something for them at some point.
As the Marvel x Magic: The Gathering collaboration evolves, people can anticipate seeing more characters and different expressions of them, as well as totally new cards entering the Magic space. Of course, the sets will also pull from the history of Magic as well, as these do.
When asked if there will be anything akin to Magic‘s The Lord of the Rings One Ring card, Nguyen notes that he can’t talk about specifics, but it’s going to be a super awesome few years in the Marvel x Magic space, so it’s time for us all to get hype.
