AHSOKA Casts GAME OF THRONES’ Rory McCann to Play Baylan Skoll After Ray Stevenson’s Passing

The Hound is coming to the galaxy far, far away. Jeff Sneider of The Insneider first broke the news (since confirmed elsewhere) that Lucasfilm has tapped Game of Thrones‘ alum Rory McCann to replace the late Ray Stevenson as Baylan Skoll on Ahsoka.

Rory-McCann in armor as The Hound on Game of ThronesHBO

The great Ray Stevenson passed away unexpectedly after a very brief illness in May of 2023. That was just three months before Ahsoka debuted on Disney+. The beloved veteran actor had starred in countless films and television shows before joining Star Wars. Some of his notable projects included Rome, The Other Guys, Vikings, Punisher: War Zone, and the Thor films. But he more than made his mark in the galaxy far, far awar as former Jedi Baylan Skoll on Ahsoka.

The first season ended with Skoll on the verge of completing a meaningful personal journey. His trip across the universe had huge implications for the Force itself. With Stevenson’s death it was unclear how showrunner Dave Filono would conclude Skolls’ story. Now, rather than write the character out of its story, Lucasfilm has opted to recast the part. And they’ve found someone with the presence both in spirit and in stature, to match Stevenson’s.

Rory McCann, best known for playing Sandor Clegane on Game of Thrones, will take over as Baylan Skoll when the show eventually returns for its second season. McCann’s past works include Hot Fuzz, Clash of the Titans, Jumanji: The Next Level, and as the voice of Megatron in Transformers: EarthSpark. In 2024 he also appeared in Gladiator II and Knuckles.

While he’s certainly a fantastic choice for the sad, stoic, determined Skoll, McCann has some big shoes to fill. Stevenson delivered one of the best, most complex Star Wars characters in years with a beautiful and moving performance. If McCann can capture even some of what we loved about Baylan Skoll during Ahsoka‘s first season he will truly be honoring Ray Stevenson.

Video Reimagines Classic STAR TREK as an ’80s Anime Series

There has been Star Trek animation on television since 1973, when Star Trek: The Animated Series premiered on Saturday mornings. That tradition extends into today, with animated Trek shows like Lower Decks and Prodigy. But one type of Star Trek animation we’ve never had, at least not yet, is a Star Trek anime. Well, via Laughing Squid, we discovered that one YouTuber fan named Miss Mello has rectified that error. They’ve taken audio from the trailer for the classic 1967 episode “The Trouble With Tribbles,” and animated it in ’80s anime style. The results are perfect. You can check out this delightful video below:

The original “The Trouble With Tribbles” is an episode of the classic show that leans heavily into broad comedy, and it remains one of the most beloved episodes to this day. The slapstick of it all lends itself perfectly to ’80s anime goofiness, so this was a match made in heaven. According to Miss Mello, the fighting between the Enterprise officers and the Klingons in this video drew inspiration from the 1985 series Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam. But there are elements from other anime shows from the era, like Starblazers, Robotech, and Voltron.

Video Reimagines Classic STAR TREK as an ’80s Anime Series_1Miss Mello

Miss Mello got just about all of the classic Star Trek details right when making this. Well, except the original series Klingons didn’t actually have bumpy alien foreheads, but hey, why nitpick? All of this just makes us wish for an actual Star Trek anime series. It’s almost shocking that there hasn’t been one yet. We’d be down for a retro-style anime featuring Kirk and Spock. We’d also love a modern-looking anime film showcasing the Strange New Worlds crew. We think there’s probably a sizable audience for both. In the meantime, we’ll just have to watch Captain Kirk deal with pesky tribbles and imagine what might have been.

Big Status Quo Changes in DC and Marvel Comics History That Actually Stuck

Superhero comics, particularly those from DC and Marvel Comics, tell stories in what we call the perpetual “Illusion of change.” What that means is these cosmic soap operas constantly throw storytelling curveballs at the readers, only to quickly undo them. Things like changes in powers, new romantic interests, and most famously, the deaths of major characters. But almost always, these shocking changes are reversed, and these characters are restored to “factory settings.” A recent example of this is when famously down-on-his-luck Spider-Man became the millionaire CEO of Parker Industries. It wasn’t long before he lost it all, and went back to being a regular guy Peter Parker. Very occasionally, however, superhero comics make big status quo changes, and those changes actually stick. Sometimes undoing literal decades of seemingly permanent comic book lore. Below are some of the few examples of those big changes that stuck.

Superman Reveals His Secret Identity to Lois LaneLois Lane tries to prove Clark Kent is Superman in the pages of Silver Age DC Comics.DC Comics

For over 50 years, Superman hiding his Clark Kent identity from Lois Lane was an ingrained part of DC mythology. DC produced dozens of comic book stories about Lois discovering the big secret. And each time, Superman convinces her otherwise by the story’s end. The Christopher Reeve movies even did the whole “Lois discovers Clark is Superman” bit in Superman II. Even there, the filmmakers undid it all by the final act. DC writers designed every story to make Lois look like a fool. And they always ended with Superman winking at the reader like a big jerk.

Big Status Quo Changes in DC and Marvel Comics History That Actually Stuck_1DC Comics

Then, in 1991’s Action Comics #662, by Roger Stern and Bob McLeod, DC Comics finally pulled the trigger. Clark finally revealed his secret to Lois Lane and not only did it stay, but the two got married a few years later. This power couple’s marriage is one that remains to this day. An entire generation of comics fans have only ever known a Superman who’s married to Lois Lane. Yet for decades, the idea that Superman could never tell Lois Lane the truth was simply the way it was and seemingl, the way it was always going to be.

Spider-Man Finally Joins the AvengersBig Status Quo Changes in DC and Marvel Comics History That Actually Stuck_2Marvel Comics

Spider-Man is the mascot of Marvel Comics, and their most popular character. Yet the publisher always kept him separate from Marvel’s “all-star” team of heroes, the Avengers. Spider-Man, according to Marvel, was just “not a joiner.” Peter Parker flirted with the idea several times, however. At least once a decade, we’d get an Avengers story where Spidey decides to join, only to discover he’s just not a team player. Wash, rinse, repeat. In the ’90s, Cap even fired him after a brief stint, saying his skills weren’t up to fighting cosmic enemies. (But Hawkeye and Black Widow’s are? Get outta here with that Cap.)

Cover art from New Avengers and the 2012 Avengers when Spider-Man became a team member for real. Marvel Comics

Then, in 2005, Marvel relaunched Earth’s Mightiest Heroes in a brand new title called New Avengers. This new series came to us from the team of Brian Michael Bendis and David Finch. Not only did Wolverine join the Avengers, but Spider-Man also joined—for real this time. Spidey served as an Avenger during most of the Bendis New Avengers run and Jonathan Hickman’s subsequent Avengers series. MCU fans probably think Spider-Man was always Avengers material. But it’s something Marvel Comics only decided was true relatively recently.

Robin Grows Up and Becomes the Adult Hero NightwingThe evolution of Dick Grayson from Robin to Nightwing. Art by George Perez.DC Comics

Robin was introduced a year into Batman’s adventures as “The sensational character find of 1940.” Former circus acrobat Dick Grayson was the first prominent kid sidekick, leading to an entirely new category of comic book superhero. Instantly iconic, Robin remained a kid for the better part of 44 years. Oh, DC let him graduate to teen status eventually, and even let him become a freshman in college. But they never let him get past simply going from “Boy Wonder” to “Teen Wonder.” DC clearly intended Robin to be perpetually adolescent, fighting crime in green booty shorts forever.

Big Status Quo Changes in DC and Marvel Comics History That Actually Stuck_3DC Comics

Robin’s forever underage status remained immutable, until the year 1984 that is. That’s when the character’s popularity as the leader of the Teen Titans allowed for Dick Grayson to graduate to adult status at last, as the hero Nightwing. New Teen Titans writer Marv Wolfman matured Grayson into a true grown-up hero and detective, allowing the Robin mantle to pass on to others. These days, Nightwing is one of DC’s most popular heroes. Forty years on, it seems wild that DC kept him as a child for so long, but for decades, adulthood seemed out of reach for him.

Bucky Comes Back from the Grave as the Winter SoldierThe death of Bucky, as shown in Avengers #4 by Jack Kirby.Marvel Comics

For the most part, we’re avoiding any resurrections as part of this list. No comic book death is ever status quo for long. Even certain “sacred deaths,” like Jason Todd, Supergirl, and the Barry Allen Flash, were all undone. (Although all of those took 20 or so years to undo.) But one death in comics was truly sacred, and that’s Captain America’s kid partner Bucky. When Marvel revived Cap for the modern age in 1964’s Avengers #4, they revealed that in 1945, when Steve Rogers went into the ice, his young partner was killed in action. Bucky’s death added a ton of tragedy to Cap’s backstory, and there didn’t seem to be any good reason to ever undo it. What would be the point?

Captain America vs. his former sidekick Bucky, now the Winter Soldier.Marvel Comics

Enter creators Ed Brubaker and Steve Epting, whose seminal run on Captain America starting in 2004 revealed that Bucky never actually died. Instead, nefarious forces turned him into a brainwashed operative/assassin named the Winter Soldier. At first, fans were rolling their eyes at Bucky’s return, until the Winter Soldier storyline ended up being one for the ages. It was such a great story, it became the basis for the second Captain America MCU film. Now Sebastian Stan’s version of Bucky is a household name. But for decades, the idea of undoing Bucky’s tragic death was considered to be comic book sacrilege.

Wonder Woman Gets a Power Upgrade, Ditches the Secret Identity The Golden Age Wonder Woman transforms back into Diana Prince, and shows he she learned to glide on air currents.DC Comics

When William Moulton Marston introduced Wonder Woman in 1941, she was an instant feminist icon. Much like Superman and Batman, much of her famous iconography was present from the get-go. She was a powerful Amazon princess who wore a tiara and bullet-deflecting bracelets. She wielded a magic lasso, piloted an invisible plane, and had the strength of several men. Wonder Woman couldn’t propel into the sky and fly like Superman, but would instead “glide on air currents” to the ground. However, much like Superman, she disguised herself behind a pair of glasses as the mousy army secretary, Diana Prince.

Modern Wonder Woman fights Superman, in art by Jim Lee from the New 52 Justice League.DC Comics

All of that, more or less, remained her status quo, for the better part of 45 years. Then, DC Comics gave Wonder Woman a big post-Crisis on Infinite Earths glow-up in 1986. Under the direction of creator George Perez, Wonder Woman gained the ability to truly fly at last, and finally had super strength to rival Superman’s. She also ditched the secret identity, which had been a staple of her character in comics as well as TV. From that point forward, Princess Diana of Themyscira, in the comics at least, never looked back. Some things, like her invisible plane, made an eventual return. But unlike before, they were merely a fun nod to the past. She didn’t need those things as permanent fixtures anymore. This modern Wonder Woman truly lived up to her name.

Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver Lose their Mutant Status*Big Status Quo Changes in DC and Marvel Comics History That Actually Stuck_4Marvel Comics

We have an asterisk* next to this status quo change, because we still think it might be reversed. Two of the earliest mutants in the Marvel universe are Wanda Maximoff, the Scarlet Witch, and her speedster twin brother Pietro, a.k.a. Quicksilver. The twins were introduced as part of Magneto’s Brotherhood, but quickly became heroic Avengers. In the ’80s, they learned that Magneto was their biological father and for over 50 years, their mutant status was never questioned. Then, in 2014, Marvel revealed that the Maximoff twins’ powers were not the result of the X-gene. No, the villainous High Evolutionary tampered with their DNA as infants, giving them powers, and implanting a fake X-gene signature to cover it all up.

Big Status Quo Changes in DC and Marvel Comics History That Actually Stuck_5Marvel Comics

In that same storyline, Marvel revealed that Magneto was not their true father. Why was this all done? For the dumbest of reasons. At the time, Twentieth Century Fox held the live-action film rights. As a result, the upcoming Avengers: Age of Ultron could not mention their mutant nature. So Marvel removed their mutant status in the comics for “synergy” reasons. Despite Disney now owning both Fox and Marvel, this has remained the status quo for over a decade. Still, we think there’s a chance all this is once again undone. Marvel recently revealed that Wanda and Pietro’s real mother was the original Scarlet Witch, Natalya Maximoff. Their father remained unknown. It would not be shocking to learn this unknown father is indeed Magneto, reverting the old status quo back to the way it was, at least partially.

Nintendo Announces LEGO Game Boy for October 2025

Want to make a ’90s kid smile with two words? Say “LEGO” and “Game Boy” to them, and you’ll see a positive nostalgic reaction. Well, those two words are about to link up in real life. We’ve learned, via the folks at IGN, that Nintendo just shared a very brief teaser trailer on social media, showcasing a handful of bricks that make up the Game Boy. These include those purple buttons and a directional pad. The teaser doesn’t show off the finished product. But it was enough to get the general idea. A release date of October 2025 was shown for the new LEGO Game Boy. You can check out the brief teaser right here:

— Nintendo of America (@NintendoAmerica) January 9, 2025

This is hardly the first time LEGO and Nintendo have done a collaboration together. We’ve already seen LEGO sets based on Super Mario and Mario Kart, which were apparently very popular and sold well. Other LEGO and Nintendo joint efforts include the LEGO Piranha Plant, a 16-bit Mario and Yoshi from Super Mario World, and a colossal LEGO Bowser. One of the more popular additions with the Nintendo fanbase has been The Legend of Zelda set. A few years back, they created a replica LEGO Nintendo Entertainment System games console. The Game Boy just seems like the logical next step.

So just how much is this LEGO Game Boy going to cost when it arrives this fall? Right now, we really have no clue. With an October release date, it might be some time before we get much more information. The LEGO Nintendo NES that they released was rather expensive, so we hope this one costs a tad less than that one did. Meanwhile, Nintendo fans are eagerly awaiting any news on the Switch 2, and hopefully, some news about that will arrive soon as well. Right now, it seems like April is when official news will finally arrive.

This Medieval Sound Sampler Is Full Middle Ages Music and Sounds

Would you love to launch your own Middle Ages band but can’t find a lutist let alone a good hurdy gurdy player? First off, congratulations on knowing what a hurdy gurdy is (man). But second and more importantly, you no longer need real musicians to help you create Medieval sounds. You can make your own “magical melodies, sultry songs and bubonic beats” with this delightful, first-ever Medieval sampler composer.

A biege music machine sampler uprightTeenage Engineering

Teenage Engineering wants to make the music of the Middle Ages more accessible than it’s been in centuries. The company’s original EP–1320 music machine comes loaded with “hundreds of built-in Medieval sounds.” Measuring a lithe 9.5-inches by 7-inches by 0.7-inches, this fantastic machine packs a musical punch. That includes lutes “thundering drums,” “punishing percussive,” and more sounds that make up a library of “phrases, play ready instruments, and one-shot samples. Here’s the sampler’s official description:

A redesigned set of send effects and punch-in FX, a brand new arpeggiator and a collection of craftily captured multi-sampled instruments. The line input and the internal microphone allow you to sample your own sounds in just seconds. Whether you’re into making sultry serenades or bubonic beats, the EP-1320 has you covered.

A music machine sampler on a rockTeenage Engineering

The whole machine requires just four AAA batteries or a USB-C. It also boasts a built-in mic and speaker, six stereo voices, and 128MB memory. And it just looks really cool.

We don’t know what a full Medieval band would cost to hire, but it’s definitely more than this sampler. You can play your own period pieces or play along with classic tracks for $299. The device’s official page has some excellent samples you can listen to so you can really appreciate what it can do. It also has its own line of accessories, including a quilted bag.

For everything it can do, though, the Medieval music box is worth it for one reason alone. It will put a hurdy gurdy in your hands even if you don’t know what kind of instrument that really is.

Prince’s Iconic PURPLE RAIN Shirt Is Going Up for Auction

The late, great Prince was releasing albums starting with 1978’s For You. But it was 1984’s film and soundtrack to Purple Rain that catapulted him into true pop icon status. For much of the film, Prince wore a ruffled white shirt, like a time-traveling musician from an 18th-century royal court. It’s the shirt he wore in the film’s finale, where he played the songs “Baby I’m a Star,” “I Would Die 4 U,” and the titular “Purple Rain.” And that shirt is now going up for auction at Bonhams, with a starting price of $55,000 dollars. It’s expected to sell for up to $90,000. You can check out images of the iconic shirt below:

Click To View Gallery Prince’s Iconic PURPLE RAIN Shirt Is Going Up for Auction_1 Bonhams Prince’s Iconic PURPLE RAIN Shirt Is Going Up for Auction_2 Bonhams Prince’s Iconic PURPLE RAIN Shirt Is Going Up for Auction_3 Bonhams

According to Bonhams, Prince’s Purple Rain shirt is white silk, with a gathered high-neck collar, and three layers of ruffles. It has long sleeves, ruffled faux French cuffs, faux pearl buttons down the front, and shoulder pads. There’s even a Prince purple/white label sewn to the inside neck. It comes with a letter of authenticity from Juanita Escovedo. It states that the shirt was made during the making of Purple Rain, and given by the Purple One to his protege Sheila E. The iconic drummer later sold it as part of a fundraising effort several years later.

Purple Rain was a cultural game changer, not just for Prince, but for pop music in general. The film produced four top ten hits, with “When Doves Cry” and “Let’s Go Crazy” both going to #1. The Purple Rain effect didn’t just extend to Prince and the Revolution. Music from other artists featured in the film, like The Time and Apollonia 6, all had hits on the radio and MTV that year. Because of Purple Rain, the Minneapolis sound extended all around the globe. So getting to own a piece of that era is owning a piece of pop culture that ripples into the present day. The Bonhams auction ends on January 22, at 12:00 PST.

Cillian Murphy Is Not in 28 YEARS LATER But Could Appear Later in New Film Trilogy

The “Is Cillian Murphy in 28 Years Later or Not?” saga continues. At first, there was word that he would be in the film. And, fans certainly thought they saw Cillian in the 28 Years Later trailer as a zombie, only to discover that was not him after all. It sure did look like him, though. If it were true, that would have been a ridiculously funny cameo, imo. Now, producer Andrew Macdonald is finally clearing the air about Cillian Murphy’s involvement in 28 Years Later and the future of the 28 Days Later franchise.

28 days later jim stands on a london bridge cillian murphy not in 28 years later Fox Searchlight Pictures

When speaking to Empire Magazine, Macdonald confirmed that Cillian Murphy will not be in the 28 Years Later movie. But he hopes that there is room for Jim to return to this new trilogy at some point. “[On] this, we wanted him to be involved and he wanted to be involved,” he said. “He is not in the first film, but I’m hoping there will be some Jim somewhere along the line.” For now, Murphy will remain behind the scenes as an executive producer but we will see what happens in the future.

We already know that 28 Days Later: The Bone Temple is shot and ready to go. It is not impossible for Jim to be in it and they are just keeping it under wraps for now.

PETER PAN’S NEVERLAND NIGHTMARE Trailer Takes Us Deeper Into the Twisted Childhood Universe, Plus Tinker Bell and Hook First Looks

First, came Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey, a twisted take on a classic children’s story. Now, the “Twisted Childhood Universe” continues with another horror-tinged version of an iconic children’s fable. This time, it’s the world of Peter Pan, in Peter Pan’s Neverland Nightmare. This film reimagines Peter as a demented killer, who kidnaps unsuspecting children to take them to “Neverland.” Written and directed by Scott Chambers, Peter Pan’s Neverland Nightmare arrives in theaters for three days only starting January 13, 2025, until January 15. You can check out the first creepy trailer right here:

Here’s the first official description for Peter Pan’s Neverland Nightmare, along with the first poster:

The newest entry into the Poohniverse follows Wendy Darling as she strikes out in an attempt to rescue her brother Michael from the clutches of the evil Peter Pan who intends to send him to Neverland. Along the way she meets a twisted Tinkerbell, who is hooked on what she thinks is fairy dust.

This definitely looks to have some serious The Black Phone vibes, only with a demented fairytale twist. We can’t help but wonder, if Peter Pan is evil in this, then is Captain Hook the good guy? And what about the Lost Boys? (Hopefully, they’re not vampires. We’re afraid others have done that before.) Points to the Neverland Nightmare filmmakers if they somehow find a way to work an angry crocodile into the proceedings.

We’re not sure about any of that, but we do have our first looks at Captain Hook and Tinkerbell. And they look… different than we’re used to.

Peter Pan’s Neverland Nightmare features Megan Placito as Wendy Darling, Martin Portlock as Peter Pan, Kit Green as Tinkerbell, Peter DeSouza-Feighoney as Michael, Kierston Wareing as Roxy, and Nicholas Woodeson as Steven. It is produced by Rhys Frake-Waterfield (Winnie-The-Pooh: Blood and Honey 1 & 2).
