Tribeca to Debut Documentary About the Kid Who Beat TETRIS, BLUE SCUTI: GAME CRASHER

In January of 2024, Nerdist covered a truly amazing feat in gaming. Willis Gibson, a then-13-year-old prodigy, “beat” the formerly unbeatable: Tetris. Now, most people know Tetris to be the game you don’t so much win but play until you lose. Using quick-touch controller techniques, programming probability models, a whole lot of skill, and some luck, Gibson reached a killscreen during level 157 of Tetris. It was one of the glitches originally designed not to matter because humans weren’t meant to make it that far. Gibson, whose gamer handle is Blue Scuti, became the first person to reach this Tetris killscreen. Now, a documentary about this remarkable person and his Tetris story is debuting at this year’s Tribeca Festival, Blue Scuti: Game Crasher.

Blue Scuti: Game Crasher explores Gibson’s life after becoming an overnight sensation. Tribeca’s official synopsis of this Tetris documentary is as follows. “Thirteen-year-old Willis Gibson’s life changes overnight when he becomes the first person in human history to beat Tetris. This coming-of-age story explores grief, the power of community and the rise of an unexpected internet legend.” The run also gave him the Overall Score, Level, Lines, and 19 Score world records, but those are secondary to “beating” Tetris. That’s how big a deal this is. Chris Moukarbel is the director of the movie, a production of Legendary Pictures.

Blue Scuti: Game Crasher will premiere Wednesday, June 11, 2025, as part of the Tribeca Festival with two further screenings later at the festival. Tickets for the whole festival, and Blue Scuti specifically, go on sale April 29. We can’t wait to check out this documentary about the legend who beat Tetris.

THE LAST OF US Season 2’s Biggest Adapted Elements and Moments From the Games

After more than two years, The Last of Us is back for its sophomore season. This season is set to adapt half of Naughty Dog’s 2020 game The Last of Us Part II. This is a much steeper task than the first round, considering the game’s complex revenge plot, changing player character perspectives, and the sheer size of Part II. As the TLOU universe unfolds further on screen, more departures from the source material are expected than preservations. So, we are going to break down the biggest moments and elements from the games that The Last of Us season two adapts from the games.

RELATED ARTICLE

The Biggest Moments THE LAST OF US Series Adapts From the GamesThe Last of Us Season 2’s Biggest Elements and Adapted Moments From the Games – Episode 1, “Future Days” The Introduction of Abby Kaitlyn Dever The Last of Us season 2 Abby 2HBO

In “Future Days,” The Last of Us season two honors the cinematic nature of the second game. But it crafts its own legacy, with certain scenes and sequences occurring at different points. The first scene opens with Abby (Kaitlyn Dever) mourning her father in front of a set of graves alongside her former Firefly peers. This scene takes place in the open field near St. Mary’s Hospital in Salt Lake City. This is a familiar setting to those who remember the season 1 finale.

But one may recall that this scene never takes place in the game. There, we met Abby with her WLF comrades after their arrival in Jackson. The show does not waste any precious time before throwing viewers in the deep end to meet the antagonist. (Or, she’s the second protagonist, depending on how you approach the material). However, in the series, her motives are immediately clear: she will avenge her father.

Ellie & Dina’s Love Story The Last of Us season 3 premiere Dina and EllieHBO

The lifeline of the second game, amid the tragedy, is the burgeoning romance between Ellie and Dina. Thankfully, the series shows this in spades. The seeds of this arc stem from as early as season 1 episode 6 “Kin,” in which Ellie notices a girl matching Dina’s physical characteristics in the Jackson canteen. The girl is staring at her, and subsequently screams, “What?” to scare her off.

In this episode, many of Ellie and Dina’s scenes from early in the second game get such stunning visual accuracy. They include the patrol on horseback in the snowstorm and cleaning out the abandoned supermarket of infected. Most importantly, there’s the Jackson dance. In the show, this scene gets a rewrite to be the 2029 New Years Eve Party.

Watching the dance scene side-by-side with its video game counterpart underscores the show’s commitment to preserving what is a truly special moment. It is forever in the minds of longtime fans. We see this down to the fairy lights strung throughout the hall, the exact music playing, and the iconic line that Isabella Merced’s Dina richly delivers: “Oh Ellie, I think they should be terrified of you,” followed by their first kiss.

Just as in the game, Seth, the owner of the Tipsy Bison, lances a slur at Ellie and Dina. However, Joel’s response changes in the show: instead of an aggressive shove, Joel bodies Seth, punching him in the face—a cinematic victory.

Stay tuned for more key moments and elements from the game that we see in The Last of Us season two.

POKER FACE Season Two Trailer Takes Charlie on More Adventures Full of Murder Mystery

Charlie is back and ready to accurately see through a lot of people’s poker faces and lies. Peacock’s Poker Face, starring Natasha Lyonne, is gearing up for season two with an explosive and delightfully funny new trailer. We are going across the country as Charlie continues to be on the run and solve mysteries using her uncanny ability to tell if someone is lying or not. From strange adults to one very creepy kid, there are a lot of killers and scammers out there who are gonna wish they never met her.

This mystery-of-the-week show includes so many big name guest stars that it will make your head spin. The Poker Face season two guests include Melanie Lynskey, Giancarlo Esposito, Cynthia Erivo, John Cho, John Mulaney, Katie Holmes, David Alan Grier, Kumail Nanjiani, Sam Richardson, and many, many more names.

In addition to the above Poker Face trailer, here’s a lovely note from the show’s creator, writer, and producer Rian Johnson and Natasha Lyonne:

“Charlie Cale is back on the run, and in Season 2 we’ve taken her journey to the next level one murder mystery at a time. From minor league baseball to big box retail, from funeral homes to alligator farms and even a grade school talent show, Charlie navigates her crime solving existential road-trip with deadpan wit, human empathy, and her signature uncanny lie-detecting ability.

To bring Season 2 to life, we pulled visual inspiration from American 70s cinema, all the stuff we love like Robert Altman, Bob Rafelson, Peter Bogdanovich.  But the backbone of this show is TV – the kind of TV we grew up watching, episodic case of the week gems like Columbo and The Rockford Files and Quantum Leap.  Each episode is a mini movie, existing in its own world with a unique tone and vibe, featuring an eccentric lot of characters played by a truly gonzo parade of guest stars. We still can’t believe we got to work with rockstars like Cynthia Erivo, Katie Holmes, John Mulaney, and Awkwafina (and many many more, the list is kinda dizzying) who all dove into the game with joy and came ready to play.

Twelve killer new episodes are coming your way.  Buckle up and see you on the road!”

Pringles x Miller Lite Team Up for ‘Beer Can Chicken’ and ‘Grilled Beer Brat’ Flavored-Chips

Summer is, mercifully, just around the corner. That means we’ll soon be sitting in the backyard with a burger in one hand and a beer in the other. But this year you won’t even need to attend a barbecue to enjoy the flavors of the season. Pringles and Miller Lite have partnered on two new limited-edition potato chips that truly celebrate summer, Beer Can Chicken and Grilled Beer Brat.

Two cans of Pringles Miller Lite flavors with a grill cooking sausages in the backgroundPringles/Miller Lite

Get out those flip flops and your appetites even if you plan on sitting in your house instead of going to a pool party, because summer is coming to you in a tall thin can of potato chips. Pringles and Miller Lite have teamed-up on a first-of-its-kind innovation for the iconic chips. This May they’re bringing beer-infused Pringle flavors to store shelves. Here’s how the companies describe each potato chip:

Pringles x Miller Lite Beer Can Chicken deliciously combines the flavor of savory roasted chicken complete with notes of garlic and onion with the authentic flavor of the Original Light Beer.
Pringles x Miller Lite Grilled Beer Brat has that smokey grilled brat flavor you know and love, with notes of black pepper, caramelized onion and brown spice. The authentic flavor of the Original Light Beer comes through in a hoppy, malt beer aroma.

“At Pringles, we’re dedicated to bringing new, unexpected flavors that both surprise and satisfy our fans’ cravings to the market, no matter the occasion,” said Mauricio Jenkins, US Head of Marketing for Pringles, in a press release. “That’s why we came together with the brewing geniuses at Miller Lite to bring our two iconic brands together. These crisps marry the best flavors of summer into one delicious bite that we can’t wait for fans to experience. We hope the new flavors kick off grilling season on a deliciously crispy note.”

Two single potato chips in front of their Pringles cansNerdist

So, how do they actually taste? We can tell you. Pringles and Miller Lite sent us both the Beer Pringles to try. They offer very different culinary experiences. The Beer Can Chicken Pringles is not especially beer-y. It smells and tastes like a very nice grilled chicken, flavorful but not overpowering. Where Miller Lite really makes its potato chip presence felt is in the Grilled Beer Brat Pringle. It smells like beer, and it tastes like beer. It’s a big, intense flavor that people are either going to either love or not. Either way, don’t get pulled over if you eat a whole can.

If you want to find out for yourself how both beer Pringles flavors taste, you’ll get the chance soon. They arrive nationwide in May “while supplies last.” After that, you’re on your own for actually grilling food this summer.

James Gunn Reveals Behind the Scenes Look at SUPERMAN’s Best Pal, Jimmy Olsen

Soon, the world will meet a new Clark Kent in Superman. (Formerly titled Superman: Legacy). DC Studios co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran are rebooting the most famous superhero in the world as they transition the franchise from the DCEU to the DCU. Who will play the Man of Steel on the big screen this time around? What kind of story will we see him in? And who will bring it to life? We’re keeping track of all these answers and more.

Recently, James Gunn hopped on social media to share a behind the scenes look at him with actor Skyler Gisondo, who will portray Superman’s best pal Jimmy Olsen. Gunn says Gisondo is “gonna knock you out of your socks” with this role.

Today is the anniversary of Superman’s Best Pal Jimmy Olsen. @SkylerGisondo’s performance in #Superman is gonna knock you out of your socks.

Here’s everything we know about Superman so far.

TitleKrypto the superdog joins DCU supermanWarner Bros.

The DCU’s first official movie (though not its first official release) is now titled simply Superman. Of course, the movie began its life as Superman: Legacy. It will kick off the film side of what James Gunn has called the franchise’s first chapter, “Gods and Monsters.” He has also called this movie “the true beginning” of the DCU.

Superman‘s PlotAn illustrated Superman sits above the trees and looks over his shouldersDC Comics/Frank Quitely

While the film still has no official synopsis, Warner Bros. did provide a description of what we can expect from the story, which James Gunn says is not an origin tale.

Superman tells the story of Superman’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. He is the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.

Gunn announced the film with art from the cover of All-Star Superman by writer Grant Morrison and artist Frank Quitely. Whether or not that means the story is influenced, inspired by, or adapted from the 12-issue comic series in any way is unclear. What Gunn has said is the movie will focus on “an earlier part of Superman’s life,” where he is still old enough to already be working for the Daily Planet.

Recently, James Gunn gave us a new look at one of Superman‘s villains, Engineer. In the DCU, Engineer is played by María Gabriela de Faría. We don’t know too much about her role yet, but we know she is “sinister perfection.”

We also have our first look at David Corenswet as the DCU’s Superman.

We also have our first look at Nicholas Hoult’s Lux Luthor. The menacing villain looks to be in fine form as he scowls around our first glimpse of the Superman movie. Check him out above in all his in all his glory, and you can then take a look at the character in action in the trailer itself. (We break it down here)

David Corenswet will play Superman, while Rachel Brosnahan will play Lois Lane.

In addition, four more actors have joined the cast of Superman. Isabela Merced will play Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi will play Mister Terrific, Nathan Fillion will play Green Lantern Guy Gardner, and Anthony Carrigan will play Metamorpho. María Gabriela de Faría will play the villain The Engineer in the movie. Also known as Angela Spica, the character has nanotechnology built into her body. Additionally, Sara Sampaio will play Eve Teschmacher, Skyler Gisondo will play Jimmy Olsen, and Wendell Pierce will play The Daily Planet boss Perry White. Saturday Night Live‘s Beck Bennett will play The Daily Planet‘s sports journalist Steve Lombard. James Gunn has also confirmed that Nicholas Hoult will play Lex Luthor.

James Gunn recently confirmed that one exciting canine character would join the world of the DCU’s Superman this summer. Gunn shared that Krypto the Superdog would be a fixture of the movie and that he would be a pup who is a “not-so-good-good-boy” inspired by Gunn’s own real-life dog, Ozu.

In full, Gunn notes:

Krypto arrives on screens in Superman this summer. Krypto was inspired by our dog Ozu, who we adopted shortly after I started writing Superman. Ozu, who came from a hoarding situation in a backyard with 60 other dogs & never knew human beings, was problematic to say the least. He immediately came in & destroyed our home, our shoes, our furniture – he even ate my laptop. It took a long time before he would even let us touch him. I remember thinking, “Gosh, how difficult would life be if Ozu had superpowers?” – and thus Krypto came into the script & changed the shape of the story as Ozu was changing my life. What better time to debut the not-so-good-good-boy Krypto than #AdoptAShelterDog month.  Btw, Ozu today, is, fairly often, a very good boy.  #Superman

Gunn also recently confirmed the casting of Ma and Pa Kent on Threads. Pruitt Taylor Vince (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) will play Jonathan Kent, a.k.a. Pa Kent. Meanwhile, Neva Howell will play Martha Kent.

Behind the Scenes

James Gunn wrote the (definitely completed) script and is directing.

Original, Unaltered STAR WARS (Hated By George Lucas) Gets First Theatrical Screening in 47 Years

The seemingly impossible has happened, and perhaps Mustafar has frozen over. George Lucas’ original theatrical version of Star Wars: A New Hope will soon have a theatrical screening. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the British Film Institute’s Film on Film Festival in June will open with a screening of Lucas’ 1977 classic. According to the report, this is one of the few original Technicolor prints still in existence. December 1978 was the last time this print of the original Star Wars movie was ever shown. This will be the first time this version of Star Wars has had a theatrical showing in nearly 47 years.

Now, you might be thinking our math is wrong here. It can’t possibly be 47 years, right? True, the last official wide release of the non-Special Edition versions of the original trilogy happened in 1995. That entire ad campaign was “See the original versions, one last time.” But those VHS releases were not really the original versions of Star Wars either. George Lucas began tweaking the sound mix of the film almost right away. When he re-released Star Wars after The Empire Strikes Back, Lucas added in the “Episode IV: A New Hope” title to the opening crawl. That didn’t exist until 1981. The version shown at the upcoming film festival is simply “Star Wars.”

Original, Unaltered STAR WARS (Hated By George Lucas) Gets First Theatrical Screening in 47 Years_1Lucasfilm

There’s every chance this happy news for OG Star Wars fans doesn’t last long, however. George Lucas famously hated the unaltered original versions if the Star Wars movie, particularly of the first film. He’s always maintained that he never really finished them. And undeniably, some parts are better in the Special Editions, namely, the Death Star trench battle. (Greedo shooting first? Still not better.)

Lucas even said in the past about the original Star Wars movie, “The Special Edition, that’s the one I wanted out there. The other movie, it’s on VHS, if anybody wants it. I’m not going to spend the — we’re talking millions of dollars here — the money and the time to refurbish that, because to me, it doesn’t really exist anymore. It’s like this is the movie I wanted it to be, and I’m sorry you saw a half-completed film and fell in love with it. But I want it to be the way I want it to be. I’m the one who has to take responsibility for it. I’m the one who has to have everybody throw rocks at me all the time, so at least if they’re going to throw rocks at me, they’re going to throw rocks at me for something I love rather than something I think is not very good, or at least something I think is not finished.”

We can kind of see Lucas’ point. But these unaltered, original Star Wars films are a part of history. Though George Lucas technically doesn’t own Lucasfilm anymore, but if he’s mad enough about it, all he has to do is pick up his phone and call Kathleen Kennedy, and the original version of Star Wars goes back into the vault. But we hope Mr. Lucas isn’t so intractable in his older age, and lets us see the original version of Star Wars that the world fell in love with nearly five decades ago, in theaters as it’s meant to be seen.

DAREDEVIL: BORN AGAIN’s Post-Credits Scene Sheds Light on One Vigilante’s Future

.cls-2{fill:#9d342c}

Daredevil: Born Again is somehow over already and whoa was the finale a doozy. Fisk fully takes over the city after offing the Commissioner and puts everyone under martial law. Things are not good because anyone who wears a mask, intricate or plain, is seen as a potential vigilante. And if you break curfew or go against the anti-vigilante mindset, you could face prison or worse. In fact, the task force has the Punisher locked up along with others. But, in a post-credits scene for Daredevil: Born Again, we get a little more Punisher goodness that sets up his future.

In the finale, the Punisher shows up at Matt’s place in the nick of time to save him from Fisk’s men. They are still in disagreement about killing with Frank eliminating everyone in sight while Matt wants to subdue them. Matt’s apartment goes kaboom and Frank gets captured by a swath of cops, whom he insults in only a way he can.

DAREDEVIL: BORN AGAIN’s Post-Credits Scene Sheds Light on One Vigilante’s Future_1Giovanni Rufino/Marvel Television

In the actual post-credits scene, Frank strikes up a conversation with Anthony Petruccio, a guard who is a part of the Punisher fanboy club. He chats with Anthony and quickly wins him over, connecting over their former military past. He asks Anthony to shake his hand, which he’s dumb enough to do, and promptly breaks his arm. This opens the door for him to get the officer’s keys and presumably escape. And we all know that an army of fanboy cops cannot stop one grunting and yelling Punisher, twice. The man is surgical with a weapon!

Here’s How the Punisher Shows Up in DAREDEVIL: BORN AGAIN

While there isn’t a full Punisher series coming down the pipeline, Jon Bernthal is working with Marvel on a special presentation. This will be in the vein of Werewolf by Night, and that was a banger. The Punisher special will hit Disney+ in 2026 in conjunction with Daredevil: Born Again season two. We assume that special will precede the next chapter of Matt Murdock’s messy saga. Let’s see how that Daredevil: Born Again post-credits scene with the Punisher leads to what’s coming next.

John Boyega Says He’s Had Marvel Talks, Reveals Which Marvel Hero He’d Want to Play

It’s been several years since actor John Boyega has starred in a giant franchise like Star Wars. In recent interviews, he’s mentioned focusing only on indie films. But things change. Currently, his Star Wars future remains up in the air. It’s possible he appears in the Rey movie. But it seems Marvel Studios has at least spoken to Boyega about a potential future role. Via Kotaku, we’ve learned that when Boyega appeared the C2E2 Convention recently, fans asked him about joining the MCU. He confirmed that he had conversations with Kevin Feige on the subject, but didn’t elaborate much further.

Even though Boyega has only had talks with Marvel, it didn’t stop the fans in the audience from fancasting him right there on the spot. One fan yelled out “Bishop!” referencing the time-traveling/energy absorbing member of the X-Men. Boyega responded by saying “Oh, I’d play Bishop.” With an X-Men reboot on the horizon in the MCU, it does make sense to include Bishop among the roster. He’s an iconic member of the team, and one only barely used in X-Men: Days of Future Past. The MCU version of the X-Men may focus instead on characters like Lucas Bishop, who had small roles in the Fox X-Men films.

(Left) John Boyega as Finn in Star Wars (Right) Bishop from the pages of X-Men.Lucasfilm/Marvel Comics

Although not mentioned specifically by anyone, another option is an older version of T’Challa II in a potential third Black Panther film. At some point, we’re going to see an older version of the young Prince. And we think John Boyega would crush it in that role. Of course, we should remind everyone, almost every name actor has had talks with Marvel Studios at some point. This might turn into a nothing burger. But we must say, much as we loved him as Finn, we wouldn’t hate it if Boyega suited up as an X-Man at some point.
