Organic by Jadah McCoy New Release

Jadah McCoy’s ORGANIC, pitched as Bladerunner meets Pitch Black, in which 18-year-old Syl has barely survived the genetic splicing that plagued her human body. After discovering the androids’ plot to wipe out human and Cull alike, Syl must return to Elite to warn the other survivors. However, with the realization that her group of survivors isn’t the only one, also comes the realization that some humans are just as bad as androids. Bastion and Syl grow closer, however, their relationship suffers under the weight of her past ghosts and a growing threat that endangers human and android alike.

Excerpt
CHAPTER ONESylBreathing is a habit. The oxygen filters into my system, fizzles through my circuits then dissipates to nothingness. This new body is alien; it feels like my own, but I know it’s not. My eyes fall on the hole in front of me―the giant chunk of concrete ripped from the ground where the entrance to the Sanctuary used to be.The music in my ear stutters to a stop, and the gun in my hand hangs limp.We’re too late.Bastion kneels beside me, leaning against his weapon as he studies the torn roots and claw marks that score the earth. His coattails catch in the dry dirt beneath him. He looks up, blue eyes lit with mechanical brightness. “I take it this isn’t the work of the Cull you’re used to?”I step closer, peering into the hole. It’s probably fifteen feet in diameter. Gashes scar the walls all the way down until the tunnel opens up at the sewers. No sound comes from within―no sign that anyone inside might still be alive.A frown pulls my lips down. “No.”“Syl.” Bastion stands, prepared to stop me.Ignoring him, I step off the uneven ledge. My body falls through the air, landing with a small splash in the sewers below. A fall at that height would have broken my human body’s legs, but the metal frame absorbs the impact and then some. I take off, running full speed in the direction of the Sanctuary. These muscles, they never grow weak, or tired, or burn with exhaustion. Bastion catches up quickly, his footsteps shadowing mine. Darkness isn’t an obstacle for us; we can see through it as if it were daylight.The metal bars, the same ones I slipped through so long ago to escape this place, are bent open. I step over one that now lies placidly in the mildewed water. The others look like an old man’s teeth―jagged, uneven, broken.But beyond the destroyed entrance…I freeze, my body refusing to move any farther. Chicken feathers litter the area, dingy and bloodstained. Beneath them lie the bodies of people I grew up with. People I know. People I care about. Static fills my ears like a thick layer of cotton.Symbols hover over a corpse, simulated by my brain―cortex―whatever it is. They shimmer and flicker before translating into letters: deceased. The word populates again and again, a dozen times, once for each body, and I choke.

Z = Zazu #AtoZChallenge
April 30. Sunday. The last day in April and the last day of the
Blogging from A to Z Challenge
. I had such fun with it this year, and I hope you all have enjoyed reading the posts.
Today, I am wrapping up my exploration into what fairy tale characters can teach us today with...
Z = Zazu
I adore The Lion King. I've seen it on Broadway, at Disney World's Wild Animal Park (several times), and a smaller production in San Jose, California, and of course I've watched the movie a gazillion times. My oldest daughter loved it so much that she wore out the VHS tape. Yep, VHS tape. She is 16, almost 17, after all.
What can we learn from Zazu today?
Love your job. If you have a job, find a way to enjoy it. Or, get a new one. Zazu certainly faced challenges with watching out for a willful, young Simba. But Zazu wanted to do his best for the future king.
A sense of humor can get you through a lot. I truly believe laughter can be the best medicine. Zazu taught us this several times, but my favorite is the scene with Scar when Zazu is singing It's A Small World.
Thanks for spending the month of April with me. I hope you'll take a look back at posts you have missed.

Y = Yzma #AtoZChallenge
It's the weekend. I hope you have some awesome stuff planned. Believe it or not, we got a dump of snow last night here in Colorado. Good thing it's supposed to be in the 70s by early in the week.
Only two days left in April... time to wrap up the
Blogging from A to Z Challenge
. And I'm left with Y and Z. As you can guess, not the easiest letters.
So, I'm pretty happy that I found...
Y = Yzma
Yes, the evil lady from The Emporer's New Groove. I'm sure you are wondering how I'll tie Yzma into my theme of what we can learn from fairy tale characters today.
Ah, but I can. In all honesty, we can learn something from anyone, no matter how evil they might be.
If you want something, go for it. Don't let others dissuade you if you truly believe in a goal. Yzma didn't. And let's be fair, initially Kuzco was a real jerk, so maybe he should have been replaced. Just saying.
Oh, and don't be a selfish villain in your own tale. They rarely get the prize.
How'd I do?

X = X Marks the Spot #AtoZChallenge
TGIF!
Wow. It's already the last Friday in April. I'm not quite sure where this month has gone. And that means the Blogging from A to Z Challenge is almost over.
And of course these last few letters are quite challenging.
After multiple internet searches for a fairy tale character whose name began with X, I decided to think outside the box.
So...
X = X marks the spot
How many fairy tales have a treasure map? And what indicates the ultimate goal on the treasure map? An X.
What can "X marks the spot" teach us today?
If presented with an amazing opportunity (we'll call this a treasure map for today's purposes), figure out your ultimate goal (the X) and go for it. Follow the journey until you get the prize.
But also enjoy and appreciate the journey. Don't just rush to the X and the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. Not only does the journey teach us, it helps us to further appreciate what we earn at the end.
If you had a treasure map, what would your X be right now?
For me, it'd be hitting the New York Times bestseller list. Just saying.

W = Wendy #AtoZChallenge
Happy Thursday!
Welcome to another day of the
Blogging from A to Z Challenge
, where my theme is: what can fairy tale characters teach us today.
And we're almost through the alphabet, landing on W today.
W = Wendy
I love Peter Pan as witnessed by my previous posts: P = Peter Pan and T = Tiger Lily . Check them out if you haven't already. There's so much we can learn from characters who are in the prime of youth and considering whether they want to grow up. Ever.
What can we learn from Wendy today?
Lift as You Climb. I'm stealing this saying from hearing it for years at Utopia Con. As opportunities come your way, share information and experiences with others who have similar interests. Nobody wants to be on top of the mountain all alone. Wendy could have gone alone to Neverland with Peter Pan, but she shared the adventure with her brothers.
Young people can be leaders. Don't be content to just follow. Lead when you can, especially if you have experience. Wendy had to learn to grow up and lead, and she didn't shy away from it just because she was young.
Don't be afraid to try new things. Life is about growing and experiencing. Don't let fear be your guide.
What did you learn from any of the characters in Peter Pan?

V = Vanessa #AtoZChallenge
I hope everyone is going well halfway through this lovely week, the last week of April and of the
Blogging from A to Z Challenge
.
As we get into these later letters, the challenge becomes, well, more challenging. So I cheated a bit today, but only a bit.
Yesterday, I featured Ursula as part of my theme of what fairy tale characters can teach us today.
So, I thought I'd cover Ursula's alter ego...
V = Vanessa
Remember when Ursula knew she was losing and turned herself into a human to fight for Eric and make sure she kept Ariel's voice?
That woman was named Vanessa.
What can we learn from Vanessa today?
Don't let appearances fool you. Vanessa still had the black heart of Ursula even though she became a gorgeous woman with a beautiful voice. Ariel ultimately figured it out thanks to her friends. But just because something comes in a beautiful package doesn't make it a thing of beauty.
Don't rush into marriage. Take your time to make sure it's right. Or, in Eric's case, that you aren't under some evil spell and overlooking the actual love of your life.
Okay, it's V, I'm trying. LOL
Can you think of a better V character?

U = Ursula #AtoZChallenge
Still chugging along with my Blogging from A to Z Challenge theme... what fairy tale characters can teach us today.
And as I promised, I'm throwing in some villains.
Today...
U = Ursula
The Little Mermaid is one of my all-time favorite Disney movies and THE favorite of my youngest daughter, which of course means I've seen it a million times. Plus, it has one of the most entertaining villains.
What can we learn from Ursula today?
Don't mess with another woman's man. Come on, I had to list this. I could have said: Don't get in the way of true love. But I think just staying away from a taken man is good as a general rule. LOL
Embrace your body. Yep, Ursula flaunted it. And she did so beautifully (we'll look past the fact that her heart is pure evil). We are all built differently, and we should celebrate that.
When something seems too good to be true, it probably is. Ursula sold Ariel a bill of goods by making it seem too good to pass up. You see what that got her. Never let a shiny object distract you from logic and research.
What did you love to hate about Ursula?
And join me tomorrow for another version of Ursula... do you know who it is?

Okay, now back to talking about fairy tale characters and what they can teach us today.
T = Tiger Lily
I love the character of Peter Pan, and I covered his lessons in P = Peter Pan . Tiger Lily only shows up for a few scenes in Pan, but she has a lot to each us.
When Peter questions about whether he'll fail to fulfill the prophecy, Tiger Lily says:
"What if you fail to try? If you don’t believe, Peter, then neither will they."
So many lessons from that single quote. First, if you don't believe in yourself, then how can others believe in you? We can't expect people to encourage and support us if we don't have faith in ourselves.
Second, failure happens for sure if we don't try. Success is only a possibility with effort. Better to fail at something than to never try it. Because then you'll absolutely never know what might have happened.
Would you have liked to see Tiger Lily get her own story/movie?
***
Well, if so, you're in luck. Tiger Lily is one of the characters who faces a new terror in our War and Pieces: Frayed Fairy Tales serial series (Season 7). This one was written by the talented Jo Michaels.

S = Sleeping Beauty #AtoZChallenge
Happy Saturday. I hope you have something fun in store for your weekend.
Thanks for stopping by. We are wrapping up the April
Blogging from A to Z Challenge
in the next week. It's been such fun!
Today, another post on the theme of what fairy tale characters can teach us today.
S = Sleeping Beauty
Or Aurora.
Sleeping Beauty is one of the classics of Disney cinema. A young princess is born to the delight of her parents' kingdom only to have a curse placed upon her by an evil, spurned woman. To keep their daughter safe, the King and Queen send her to live with three faeries.
Since I love songs, I have to quote a few lines from Once Upon a Dream.
I know you, I walked with you once upon a dreamI know you, that look in your eyes is so familiar a gleamAnd I know it's true that visions are seldom all they seemBut if I know you, I know what you'll do
You'll love me at once, the way you did once upon a dream
Sometimes we have to trust our gut and give a person a chance. Trust your heart. And of course, keep dreaming!
But, we also have to take warnings seriously from people we love and trust. If they have more knowledge than we do (as Aurora's parents did), we have to believe their intent is to help us.
To go with that, if we try to help people without telling them everything (Aurora didn't know about her curse), we won't be able to gain their trust. Keeping secrets rarely produces the desired results.
Did you think Aurora's parents should have told her about the curse?
***
It's time to share about another princess in War and Pieces: Frayed Fairy Tales. In Season 9, you'll read about Aurora as she faces a new evil, as written by the lovely NL Greene.
