Sunday

I was going to meet Mark Landreth at Lake Chabot today but I didn't go after all.  Instead I woke up late (9:15AM).

I may have Thanksgiving week off from work.  Mark has the week off as well. Last night we discussed that we should do something fun. We shall see.

I ate breakfast at mom's house and then went bicycling for a good hour.

I fell asleep on my couch, watching the San Francisco 49er game. Henceforth, I woke up and ate dinner with my mom, dad, Tony, Helen and niece, Lauren. Helen made Chinese food. It was very good.

I returned home and I gave Johnny Schaefer a call. I was overdue in returning his call.

I also spoke to Lottie briefly, having returned her call as well.

Then I called on Carla Guzman again (just for the fun of it). Carla seriously thinks I eat a lot. I do. I have an appetite that doesn't stop. I feel some weight gain coming on. I need to quit now or forever hold my piece.

I went to bed early (9:45PM).

When you jump for joy beware that no one moves the ground from beneath your feet.

Saturday

I awoke and had breakfast at mom and dad's house. Then I came to my place to take a nap.

I received a MOONLIGHT AT THE LONE CYPRESS TREE postcard from Pebble Beach, CA.  The card was from Barbara Reynolds.  The blue ocean seascape and violet skies were so beautiful to see.
Barbara wrote:

Your cards were so welcomed and busy me not able to phone you but I certainly shall attempt such futurely. Am currently on a brief escape from it all—here in Big Sur. This is my last night here alas…and my first trip here alone. And not bad for me reading "Way of the Peaceful Warrior". Enlightening

My private work # is 5-8409.
Love, Barbara

Carla arrived at my place at around three o'clock with her daughter, Priscilla.

Someone stole my SCHWINN bicycle from my garage while I left the garage door open! This really teed me off…but what's a guy to do 'cept sulk in misery (but that's bad for my health).

Carla, Priscilla and I all went out for Chinese Food at LUNG KONG. It was so very good. Then we returned to my pad.

Of course Carla signed and creatively decorated my House Book with some cool high heel shoes that she liked. She was having fun with her entry.
Carla wrote in the House Book:

"Not on my time!" (a phrase she often uses)

It's now 6:30PM, we just got back from eating! Sometimes I think that EATING is your favorite hobby. Boy do you eat! Today is our 13th Anniversary. How do you like that? Even though it feels like we have been friends forever. Maybe somewhere, someplace we have known each other. Anyway cut the past and talk about the future. I did show you a picture of the future Michael (Ha-Ha). You look great. As I am writing you are singing a terrible song, it's so hard to concentrate. Maybe you need a little practice…but please NOT On My Own Time.

Miguel, we have been having such a great time. It's unbelievable don't you think?

I hope we will be friends for a very long time to come. Thank you for sharing with me some of your very personal experiences. For me, it's very hard to express myself but with you I'm just MYSELF, nothing more! And I think that's great. WE both should be somewhere making our fantasies come true, but you know what they say, "One never knows, LIFE is full of surprises."

Well, I will always wish you the very BEST!! And thank you for being my friend.
Love y Carino,
CARLA

I like how our "13 Days" of knowing one another became an Anniversary.  (Mi Carino means "My Darling" in SPANISH.  I like when Carla says this to me.)

Carla said, "I wanted to get more 'MUSHY' but I didn't." Cest la vie.

When Carla left the phone rang and it was Stuart Western.
"Hey, want to meet up at the Hot Rod Café in Fremont?" Stuart asked.
I shrugged and made up some tired excuse.  He was trying to be persuasive but I didn't choose to go.

A little later I had a lengthy chat with Mark Landreth over the telephone. We spoke of girls and each other.  He's a cool cat.
Mark said, "You know, there's this black guy at the gym who kept talking to me."
I listened and it was as if he owed me an explanation for this conversation.  It kind of made me feel good though.  He's comfortable to talk to me with whatever is on his mind.

After I hung up the phone with Mark I drove to mom's house and kept her company as she was watching TV. I, of course, brought along my leftover Chinese food and ate it there.

"You never give my way a chance and I wish you could understand that."

Friday

Dale, Judy, Carla and I all gathered together for lunch today at The Pizza Boat. It was a good gathering. Dale made a point of going on and on about my outing last Wednesday night with Carla in front of Judy. It was like he was planting a seed of jealousy in his own manipulative way.

I remained in the City late tonight and accompanied Carla to rent-a-car. We rented a red Camaro. She loved it. I'm beginning to believe she really loves HOT ROD "Red" sports cars. I drove it. It was pretty fun riding these wheels in and around the City.

I returned home and decided to go out to the Alameda club I had heard advertised on the radio called THE TWILIGHT ZONE. It's new and it's nearby. The only probably is that it was "dead". There was no fun, electric vibe. Denise Vinsonhaler came out from Contra Costa County with her friend, Kathy. They, too, felt THE TWILIGHT ZONE to be very high-school.
Denise remarked, "This place is dead."
"That's why it's called The Twilgiht Zone," I laughed.

And so, Denise, Kathy and I decide to head over to the Sheraton in Concord. Then we went to CARLOS MURPHY's. It was an okay, spontaneous time. Denise happened so see an old flame boyfriend.
Denise surprised me when she said, "You know, I want to have a baby…but no husband."
I answered, "I'm sure that can be arranged."
She's moving to Monterey very soon.  I seriously felt she was hinting about having my baby with no strings attached.

Thursday

This week was flying by…

On the San Francisco radio station KITS there is mention of a club in Palo Alto called THE VORTEX. In Alameda there is THE TWILIGHT ZONE and the station KITS often advertises THE OASIS in San Francisco. This coming Saturday night The Rheem Theatre will Present THE UPTONES. I like the song by THE UPTONES called "Out to Sea". I love LIVE-105, The QUAKE radio. It's always unpredictable as to what song they will play. I want to hear TOUR DE FRANCE. I love it when the bikers are breathing heavily. It's a song by KRAFTWERK.

I had a Noon lunch today. Carla didn't get the time off during that hour, so I intended on having a turkey avocado sandwich at the Sunshine Health Store on my own. I happened to run into Judy Geniella, so I joined her at the Wok Express instead.

Carla and I are still having fun during our break times. She's great. She made a comment that made me feel good.
Carla said, "Michael, I can't get over how you eat and eat and eat and stay slender!"
"Well, I bike…I go to the gym, so I have make-up for those eats.   I treat myself, too, but I have to work it off.   Staying slender doesn't just happen."

I am going to have two-hundred dollars automatically transferred to my FOCUS Savings Account with CITIBANK. I have that option now with Pac Bell Directory.

I have induction to Pac Bell Directory tomorrow, so I'll learn of all the perks and benefits that I have here.

Carla practically screamed, "I missed NOT having lunch with you today!"
I said, "Well, I don't think you want to eat anyway so you can fit perfectly in to that new dress on Friday for Salsa night."
"You're right."
She will fit into it perfectly.  She's got will power.  She's 'together'.

Helen called to say, "Oh Michael, John Sims is going to stay in Houston after all. His mom got sick and he went over there. He's just decided to stay there for now."
"Oh, okay," I said.
I thought to myself, "Whatever."

I mentioned to Russ at my gym, "You know, I'm still in the market for a roommate."
I thought he would get the 'hint' but he didn't say anything.

Mark asked, "Where were you yesterday?"
"I was out partying."
I laughed at the thought of that line given that I was with a girl named "Party".
I am beginning to think that Mark really is QBL (Questionable) because he went in to the locker room, knowing full well that I may be coming out of the shower at that moment. It's probably just my hopeful imagination.
I mentioned to Mark on Halloween during a few extra drinks, "You know, Mark, you're my best-friend."
He is my buddy.

John Schaefer's roommate called me. His name is Jeff Lindfors and I recalled meeting him in L.A.
Jeff said, "Hi Mike, you know…I'm going to be visiting a girlfriend of mine in Concord."
"Oh really…that's not too far from here."
"Yeah, is it?"
"Yes, if you want…I can pick you up from the Oakland Airport next Friday. It's really close for me."
I figured Jeff and I could go for a bite to eat on that evening. It sounds like a good plan. He's a nice chap.  He's the one that I stole the idea of posting all of my postcards on my spare bedroom wall.

Carla pouted, "I want you to go to Hawaii the first week of December when I go with my girlfriend. It would be so much fun, Michael!"
I would really like to go but my finances are low. The possibility is tempting.

Denise Vinsonhaler, a name from the past, telephoned me tonight. I am to call her tomorrow after work about meeting up again. She suggested coming to visit me, too.
Denise said, "I'm planning to move to Monterey in a couple of weeks."
Could this be a farewell meeting?

"I Always Look Good"

Little by little the pleasant habit of writing almost every day became established.

"The Red and the Black"

Wednesday

Carla and I did end up going to MacArthur Park after work. We had a good dinner, too. We had ribs, chicken and for dessert we had a pumpkin-like pie and apple pie a la mode. Our waiter was named Pedro. He was from Nicaragua. I kept accidentally calling him "Pedo" (pronounced "Petho") which means 'fart' in Spanish. Carla cracked-up (as did I). We couldn't stop laughing about it. I said, "Well, Carla…he looks like a fart anyway."Carla was at her laughter tilt.
I kept going, "It's true…if a fart could be visible it would look like him."

Carla drives a Red 944 Porsche.  She drives around San Francisco like she's one 'Hot Mama'. She made the bucks as Mulke's Private Executive Secretary. Her apartment had a lot to show as well. Her little girl, Priscilla, is so cute, too. I began to wonder if maybe her husband didn't die. I wondered if maybe she is or was an unwed mother. Then again, what purpose or gain would she have to lie about such a thing. Oh well…I dropped the notion of the idea altogether.
Carla and I watched DYNASTY at her apartment and we also went to MACY's in San Francisco. I bought myself some QUORUM lotion and M-Moisturizer by CLINIQUE. Carla purchased a dress for $157.00 and some fancy gloves. She's got bucks to throw around (apparently).
"I have to look good, Michael. I'm going to a Spanish Salsa Dance on Friday night!"
"You'll look good in that dress."
"Are you kidding me…I always look good!"
I laughed.  That's Carla for you.

We went to The Palladium and I met a couple of Carla's friends (namely Einstein and Party). Imagine a girl named "Party". That was a NEW one! It was fun. The music wasn't as great as I'd expected.

I drove home and got home by two o'clock in the morning (I believe). Frankly, I was afraid to look at the time knowing I had to be at work at eight-thirty in the morning.

November 4, 1986
Tuesday

Dale Orlando came by my new office to visit today. Judy Geniella, Dale Orlando, Carla and I are all going to join together for a lunch outing this Friday.

Carla really brightens my day. I received my new Pac Bell Yellow Pages ID Card with my picture on it today.

Carla and I had lunch at DON MIGUEL's. We saw Steph (my old boss) but I didn't talk to her. She was having lunch with Irene, a real wench as far as I'm concerned. Carla continues to make me laugh.
"Who is she, Michael?"
I explained who Steph and Irene were at my old office.
"You're not there anymore…just forget them!" Carla said.
I laughed because I think she could tell I felt anguish about my old office.

Carla and I bought candy bars again. This is becoming a habit—but we promised to NOT make it a habit.

During breakfast Carla burnt our first set of toast and someone stole one of the other slices of toast that she'd made. We laugh at nonsense like this during our day. What happened to the mysteriously missed slice of toast?

I showed my ID to an invisible guard. There was no guard present when Carla and I walked in to the building.
Carla claims to know the entire 'big wig' Executives at Pac Bell Directory.
Carla announced, "I used to be Mulke's Secretary!"
Mulke is the Vice-President of Pac Bell Directory Sales throughout all of California State.
"What a connection!" I said.
I was feeling quite impressed that Carla knows him so well.
I have a feeling I will get into Yellow Page Commission Sales after all. Premise Sales may be up my alley eventually. It's all in due time.

I went to the gym and I did my Cardio class conducted by Dennis. Mark and Stuart were both in the class, too. I worked out on weights after the class.

I telephoned Mark later and we discussed Renee, Carla, my new job, Monica, Colleen and our 'horny-ness'. It was pretty funny.
I asked, "When you're horny doesn't it make you want to climb the walls?"
Mark is kind of shy about the 'horny-ness' talk but I got him to open up a little.  He sort of just laughed it off.

I telephoned Carla and left her a Spanish speaking message of which she has told me will be stored in her archives. She's so funny. She loved hearing me speak Spanish. Carla is going to Hawaii the first week of December. I may go at that time as well. Who knows? It would be fun. I only live once. Heck! Carla may come over to visit my place in Alameda on Saturday. I hope she can make it.

I may go over to San Francisco to meet her on Sunday. I have such a good time with Carla. It's as if we've known each other for seven years and it's only been a week and three days!

Steve Adams, my new geek of a boss, says, "Michael, I'm afraid you're going to have to work from eight-thirty until five o'clock tomorrow."

What a bummer. I was enjoying the four o'clock departure time as I avoided so much traffic to the East Bay. Carla and I may go to MacArthur Park to break the monotony of the work week during Happy Hour. We shall see.

Can such delightful times go on forever?  He wondered.

Monday

It's back to work at Pac Bell Directory. Rhoda and Lily had their first day on the job today. It's easier for me now. I know the job better than them. They'll pick things up quickly. Rhoda has an edge because she was from the RASC (Residence Account Service Center) in San Bruno.

Carla made me laugh a lot today. We ate at "Bill's Kitchen" this afternoon. I freaked her out when I 'got close' to her on the elevator. I guess she didn't expect me to be so charming and flirtatious. I caught her off-guard. It was fun today because Carla and I laughed so much.

I ate a lot of candy bars and I got Carla addicted to MARS Bars with almonds.
Carla said, "Oh My God, Michael, I had never tried this candy bar!"
She loved it.
We talked up a storm and she did make me laugh when she said, "My girlfriend and I went to some guy's house and on his TV was a porno blow job on the screen."
"That's hilarious. He probably was suggesting something with the two of you."
"I don't know but my girlfriend and I just pretended not to notice."
I cracked-up.

I went to the gym and Mark said, "Hi".
He wasn't too talkative today.

Anne spoke to me a bit.

I spoke to Dave and Monica. Monica is the girl that was at Mark's house on Halloween.

My sister-in-law, Helen, called me.
Helen said, "John Sims went to Texas because his mom was very ill."
"Oh, I was wondering because he said he'd call me on Sunday and he didn't."
"What was the rent you offered him?"
"I told him three-hundred."
"Do you think you'd lower it?"
I couldn't believe she was asking me this. I honestly didn't feel it was any of her business.
I said to Helen, "Actually it's going to be three-hundred 'period'."
Helen advised, "Well, I'm not sure whether he'll return from Texas but if he does he'll probably call you."

Sherri, my other sister-in-law, was driving behind my car as I was driving home. I dropped by her house to deliver Ashley some Halloween candy.

When I returned home I was happy to receive a phone call from Carla Guzman, my new, favorite coworker. We had a good talk and I sense that she is becoming a very good friend. Only time will tell, of course. As far as a relationship with Carla is concerned it's too difficult to say. I kind of like Renee of Castro Valley now. Anne Alberti seems to be 'old news'. We are not conversing as much as we did before.

Joan Rivers was delightful fun. I love her LATE SHOW. She says the most off-the-wall, unexpected things that make me laugh.

I feel fat. My tummy needs work (I know). I need to become more committed to fitness.  I wish I was as flexible as that L.A. Yoga guy that I posted in my House Book.  The photo of him had a short write-up that I also included in the House Book:
UBRAN YOGA
Never mind that yoga was invented 5,000 years ago by India's leisure class, this is what it looks like now---California hair, pants and smile, worn by L.A.'s Billy Porter, who teaches the Urban Yoga Workout, a strenuous physical yoga without overt religious weirdness.   They say yoga is like sex---a ridiculous activity to watch but once you've tried it, you want to do it again.

Sunday

I slept in until 10:45 this morning.

I recalled that I'd left a voice mail message for Carla Guzman last night at around 7PM. She wasn't at home. I should have called her when Mark and I were in San Francisco. It would have been FUN to meet-up with her…Oh well.

I ate breakfast at mom and dad's house. Afterwards I drove over to see Mike Miller. Suzy was there and we went bike riding around Alameda. We were witnesses to part of a car accident on High Street and Otis Drive.

I slept again much later in the afternoon. I like sleeping. My body needs it.

I went over to mom's house to 'hang out' again for a good while. The day was summer-like. It amazed me given that it was the second day of November. I actually heard a song called 'Summer Song' by Matt Bianco (a singer I first discovered when I went to Paris, France).
Then: "Wouldn't it be nice if we could beach clap our hand and have someone bring us a menu?"
Now: "Wouldn't it be nice if we could beach clap our hands and make all of these people disappear?"

Saturday

I rode my bike all the way from Alameda to Castro Valley today. Birda went with me 'for the ride'. She couldn't make it up the hill leading up to Lake Chabot. She's good—but not that good. I admire that she at least made the attempt. It was so much fun riding with her during this Saturday afternoon excursion.

After my ride with Birda she came to my place and signed my House Book.
Birda wrote in the House Book:
Remind me next time you start talking about hills I should think mountains.   Want to try again tomorrow?  Tee HeeWe'll see.Love,Birda
I love how Birda found an animated image of THE CALIFORNIA DREAM.  The gal in the shades is 'what I see' as the image of her through her eyes.
While Birda was visiting I received a visit from Suzy Miller, Mike Miller and Greg Manachevitz who also signed my House Book. When they left I was happy to be alone and take a much needed nap after that extensive ride.
Sue Miller wrote in the House Book: Dear Mike,In memory of your Halloween costume (photo of Gerber baby).Today is the first day of November.   I picked this page because I like this watch.  French (Francais).  How Exquisite!  I mowed the lawn at my Mom's house.  Have you seen any more movies since my Birthday (Peggy Sue Got Married)…?   Well, we're both 27 now.   How about that.   Next year is our 10 year high-school reunion.   I can't believe it.
Well, I've got to go now.   See you later."Au Revoir"Love,Suzanne Marie Andre Rolande Miller
Greg Manchevitz wrote in the House Book:
November 1, 1986, Saturday at 3:50PMHey Mike I got back from New York Upstate Ithaca a week ago.   It was fun seeing old friends but 30 degrees was cold because of the East Coast weather after traveling from California.  What a change.  My New York METS World Series.   They won 8-5 against the Boston Red Sox on October 27, 1986, Monday.  Thank God after 1969 they take the World Series in Game #7 buddy.   1986 Baseball World Series Champs.  Anyways I drank a lot of New York beer called Matts and Genesee at bars 25 cents and 40 cents a glass.   It was great.  Mike Miller is PEACE signing the Chinese people.  Bingo $ has been good to me.  Babushka is calling me.  We are gonna blow this Hot Dog Stand.  Sue says Milksky 0 68 and she owes you one later if she goes 69.   She blows a rod.  Cheers, Greg
Mike Miller wrote in the House Book:
Michael, Wow, a new month.  One of two left in 86.   Dang, I'll be 25 next year.  Oh well, Roberta, Greg, Sue and I and you are all gathered at the Armijo pad in Bay Farm Island.   Hope the weather stays warm for a while longer.   So much for the fat lady on Regent Street.  Hope you had a nice Halloween.  I can't relay too much information right now as I have to go and paint a door.
A bit later I had to go and pick up John Sims at the Fruitvale BART Station. He's the eighteen year old guy that my sister-in-law connected with me as a potential roommate. I gave him the grand tour of the townhouse.
I quoted him by saying, "And you can move-in for just three-hundred dollars a month."
John replied, "Okay, I will call you on Sunday."
I wasn't sure whether he would take me up on my offer. He was hard to read but I felt confident and hopeful.

John Sims wrote in the House Book:
Mike,I hope we can become friends.  You seem like a really cool dude.  I don't know what else to say except I'd like to say your house is great and I hope you're as nice as Helen.   PAC BELL Rules.Take Care,John Sims

Mark Landreth wrote in the House Book:
Mike,  I was here (arrow pointing at photo of model, Christie Brinkley on a yacht somewhere).I took this picture.   I tried to get more of the background.   It's a good thing you know how to swim after I threw you in.   Well, the rest is history.Anyway, today is the day after Halloween and I'm waiting for JAKE JAG –to get his act together so we can go get lucky in San Fran.   We are dressed as Chippendale Dancers tie required---------. Mark Anthony Landreth, 86'Ray Stingray'

Needless to say, I was ecstatic that Mark was finally writing in my House Book.   The most interesting part to me was his line 'so we can go get lucky in San Fran'.   I guess we have had luckier nights.
I added a magazine clip of BAILEY's IRISH CREAM in the House Book and wrote, "I DON'T GET ENOUGH."
Mark Landreth waited patiently as I was upstairs getting dressed as a Chippendale Dancer for another Halloween weekend outing.  I drove in to The City and we stopped at Hamburger Mary's on Folsom. It was fun, making this our first stop. We had a beer and then we tried to get in to a club called CITY NIGHTS. We didn't have our shirts on (obviously), so they wouldn't let us in. Isn't that ridiculous? We were bummed out.

I continued driving around San Francisco and found The Kabuki Club. Strangely enough it was no longer in existence (or at least it wasn't open on this Saturday night). We thought of going to THE OASIS but when we drove by it looked very non-Halloween, so we decided to just go back to my house in Alameda.

We changed in to our regular shirts and settled on going to The Black Angus (the old stand-by) in San Lorenzo. Renee (Mark's friend) was there. She's the one that I met at the Halloween gym party last Thursday night. She seemed to 'kind of' like me. I do think she's pretty nice. We'll see…

Friday

I took Carla Guzman to my former office (the SDC) on this Halloween day. The costumes that I saw were rather shocking. Carla makes me laugh. Carla and I ate at MAX's DINER and shared our afternoon break together. She's pretty fun. I learned that her husband died in a car accident. She has a four year old daughter named Priscilla. I am so glad I have met her. It's as if we knew each other long ago. She is so unpredictable and vivacious. We talked about some of the fat, ugly looking folks in the cafeteria. It wasn't very nice but she made me laugh. We shared candy bars. Work is the BEST…mostly because of 'Carla'.

I went to Mark Landreth's house on this evening dressed in my diaper that I created with some white sheets. To see me putting it on was a joke in itself. Colleen and Monica were at Mark's house when I arrived. They left and I learned that these two girls are thinking of moving-in with Mark.

Mark and I drove out to Foster City for the Halloween Party. It was fun seeing the costume of several people dressed as 'Raising going through the Grapevine'. My baby get-up was a hit. After the party, Mark and I stopped at the Black Angus in San Lorenzo to see what was going on there. Renee (a friend of Mark's) accompanied us. It was fun.

I went to Mark's house. We were having such a great time. Mark was cracking up. I filled my baby bottle prop with water and drank it as I drove home. One of my favorite songs by The Human League was playing, called "HUMAN".  I love that one.
