LISTEN: The Scripture & the Sense: Jeremiah 7 (with Daniel Whyte III)

Daniel Whyte III reads the Word of God on a daily basis and give the sense of it based on an authoritative commentary source such as Matthew Henry’s Commentary On the Bible. This podcast is based upon Nehemiah 8:8 where it says Ezra and the Levites “read in the book in the law of God distinctly, and gave the sense, and caused them to understand the reading.” The aim of this podcast is that through the simple reading of the Word of God and the giving of the sense of it, the church would be revived and the world would be awakened.

Today we are reading Jeremiah 7.

LISTEN: Jesus is Calling; Will You Follow? Part 2 (Just Jesus Evangelistic Campaign, Day 647 since Jan. 20, 2017 / Day 1,012 since Jan. 1, 2016 with Daniel Whyte III)

TEXT: Matthew 9:9-13

9 And as Jesus passed forth from thence, he saw a man, named Matthew, sitting at the receipt of custom: and he saith unto him, Follow me. And he arose, and followed him.

10 And it came to pass, as Jesus sat at meat in the house, behold, many publicans and sinners came and sat down with him and his disciples.

11 And when the Pharisees saw it, they said unto his disciples, Why eateth your Master with publicans and sinners?

12 But when Jesus heard that, he said unto them, They that be whole need not a physician, but they that are sick.

13 But go ye and learn what that meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice: for I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.

——-

Kyle Idleman said, “The biggest threat to the church today is fans who call themselves Christians but aren’t actually interested in following Christ. They want to be close enough to Jesus to get all the benefits, but not so close that it requires anything from them.”

There is a popular devotional book that has sold over 15 million copies over the past few years. It has featured prominently on numerous bestsellers lists and has spawned several spin-off titles. The title — “Jesus Calling” — is one that you probably are familiar with. However, in reality, the message of the gospels and the book of Acts can be summed up with the words, “Jesus is Calling.”

Jesus came to call sinners to repentance. He called men and women into the kingdom of God. We see vivid examples of this in his call of his own disciples. Several of them he called from their occupation of fishing. One, Nathaniel, he called from meditating under a fig tree. And in our passage for today, we find Jesus calling Matthew from his work at the “seat of custom” for the Roman government. When Jesus called Matthew to follow him, Matthew had every reason not to. He had a secure job with lucrative income. He lived in a nice house and hobnobbed with government officials and wealthy friends. Why would he leave all that to follow an upstart preacher from Nazareth? Sure, Jesus was popular because he worked miracles and taught in a way that the people found compelling. But Jesus was also hated by the religious leaders and would be viewed with suspicion by the Roman authorities if he was not already. Matthew had many reasons not to follow Jesus, yet he chose to follow when Jesus called.

The gospel of Luke informs us that Matthew “left all” and followed Jesus. Being a tax collector, Matthew had a consistent source of income that he could increase at any time. A tax collector could demand that people pay any amount as long as the government got what they expected. Tax collectors ran with the rich and well-to-do Gentiles. They had bigger, fancier houses, more worldly possessions, and favor with the Romans. But when Matthew followed Jesus, he left all. He left behind his rich, worldly friends. He left behind his money and his deceptive ways of getting money. He left behind the status and privilege that he enjoyed. He followed Jesus.

Perhaps, at the beginning of a new year, Jesus is saying to you, “Follow me.” If you are a believer, perhaps you have not been following Him as closely as you should have. If you are not a believer, you have the invitation to follow Jesus for the first time. Matthew did not know the road that lay ahead of him when he chose to follow Jesus, and you do not know what following Jesus means for you at this moment. That is why faith and trust is essential to any relationship with God through His Son, Jesus Christ. You must choose to follow Jesus based on who He is and what He has done.

Barney Warren wrote:

Following Jesus, following Jesus,

Gently He leads me in the heavenly way;

Watching and praying, trusting, obeying,

He will restrain me from going astray.

Following Jesus, following Jesus,

He who has suffered to redeem me from sin;

Oh, what a blessing, while I’m confessing,

He in His fullness is reigning within.

Following Jesus, following Jesus,

I am delighted with His wonderful love;

While I’m confiding, in Him I’m hiding,

Soon I shall meet Him in heaven above.

Following Jesus, following Jesus,

This is my duty for His goodness to me;

Joyful in glory, telling the story,

How in His favor I’m happy and free.

——-

Now, if you are with us today and you do not know Jesus Christ as your Savior, allow me to show you how you can place your faith and trust in Him for Salvation from sin and Hell.

First, accept the fact that you are a sinner, and that you have broken God’s law. The Bible says in Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”

Second, accept the fact that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death…”

Third, accept the fact that you are on the road to hell. Jesus Christ said in Matthew 10:28: “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” Also, the Bible states in Revelation 21:8: “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”

Now that is bad news, but here’s the good news. Jesus Christ said in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Just believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead by the power of God for you so that you can live eternally with Him. Pray and ask Him to come into your heart today, and He will.

Romans 10:9 & 13 says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved… For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

If you believe that Jesus Christ died on the Cross for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead, and you want to trust Him for your Salvation today, please pray with me this simple prayer: Holy Father God, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. I am sorry for my sins, and today I choose to turn from my sins. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. I trust Jesus Christ as my Savior and I choose to follow Him as Lord from this day forward. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life today. Amen.

If you believed in your heart that Jesus Christ died on the Cross, was buried, and rose again, allow me to say, congratulations on doing the most important thing in life and that is accepting Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour! For more information to help you grow in your newfound faith in Christ, go to Gospel Light Society.com and read “What To Do After You Enter Through the Door”.

13 But go ye and learn what that meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice: for I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.

——-

John MacArthur said, “God’s receiving of the sinner and refusing of the righteous is central to the Christian faith. The gospel is not for good people but for bad people who know they are bad and who come to God for forgiveness and cleansing.”

Dr. John Walvoord & Dr. Roy Zuck said about this passage, “After Matthew began to follow the Lord, he held a dinner at his house. Since he had invited many of his associates to this dinner, many tax collectors and “sinners” were present. Perhaps this was to introduce them to the Savior. The Jews hated tax collectors, for they collected money to support the Romans, and tax collectors often took in more than necessary and pocketed the difference. Thus the Pharisees, who would never eat with such people, asked Jesus’ disciples why He was eating with them. The Lord’s response demonstrated that His ministry is directed toward those who realize they have a need: Only sick people need a doctor. The Pharisees did not think they were sinners (sick) so they would never have sought out the Lord (the Physician). The Pharisees always brought the proper sacrifices, but they were totally lacking in compassion toward sinners. When mercy is lacking, then religious formalities are meaningless.”

In this narrative of Jesus’ words and work in the first century, we take a brief autobiographical detour as Matthew, the writer of this gospel, introduces himself to his readers. He tells the story in the third person, maintaining the focus on Jesus as the active protagonist in the true story. As Jesus passed from his previous engagement at a house in Capernaum, He comes upon Matthew sitting at the desk where he collected taxes and conducted official business for the Roman government. The Bible says that Jesus simply says to him, “Follow me.” And Matthew “arose, and followed him.”

We are not told why Jesus told Matthew to follow him. There is no indication of a prior interaction between them. However, Jesus certainly knew Matthew and knew his heart. Matthew, living and working in Capernaum, had very likely seen or at least heard of Jesus. Like most people, he was likely drawn to Jesus for reasons he did not yet understand. However, he probably felt that Jesus would not want to be associated with a person like him — a publican, a tax collector for the Gentile government, who was considered by his own people to be a traitor and a thief. Yet, Matthew followed Jesus.

LISTEN: How to Pray for the Good and Faithful Saints That You Don’t Know, Part 13 (Praying Through the Bible #332 with Daniel Whyte III)

Daniel Whyte IIIDaniel Whyte III

TEXT: Colossians 1:1-14

1 Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, and Timotheus our brother,

2 To the saints and faithful brethren in Christ which are at Colosse: Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

3 We give thanks to God and the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, praying always for you,

4 Since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus, and of the love which ye have to all the saints,

5 For the hope which is laid up for you in heaven, whereof ye heard before in the word of the truth of the gospel;

6 Which is come unto you, as it is in all the world; and bringeth forth fruit, as it doth also in you, since the day ye heard of it, and knew the grace of God in truth:

7 As ye also learned of Epaphras our dear fellowservant, who is for you a faithful minister of Christ;

8 Who also declared unto us your love in the Spirit.

9 For this cause we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that ye might be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding;

10 That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God;

11 Strengthened with all might, according to his glorious power, unto all patience and longsuffering with joyfulness;

12 Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light:

13 Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son:

14 In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins:

— PRAYER —

We are in a series of messages titled “Praying Through the Bible: A Series on Every Passage and Verse Regarding Prayer in the Bible.” The purpose of this series is to encourage and motivate you to pray to the God of the Bible. We highlighted each of these over 500 verses and passages in the Prayer Motivator Devotional Bible. So far, we have completed 331 messages in this series.

This is message #332 titled, How to Pray for the Good and Faithful Saints That You Don’t Know, Part 13.

James Burton Coffman said, “Outside of Christ there is nothing; in him is eternal life. Outside of Christ there is condemnation; in him is redemption. Outside of Christ there is guilt; in him is forgiveness, pardon and salvation.”

Over the past few messages, we have looked at the specific prayer requests that Paul made for the believers in Colosse. He prayed for them: (1) to have the “knowledge of God’s will”; (2) to walk worthy of their salvation; (3) to be “fruitful in every good work”; (4) to ‘increase in the knowledge of God’; (5) that they would be ‘strengthened with all might according to God’s glorious power’; and (6) that they would use God’s strength to live with patience, long-suffering, joy, and thanksgiving.

As we close out this passage, we have been looking at the reasons why the saints at Colosse (and we ourselves) ought to be able to live and pray with joy and gratitude. Paul does not fail to give us specific reasons in this letter. Two reasons we have looked at already include the fact that Christ has qualified us to partake of the inheritance of the saints and that we have been delivered from the power of darkness and translated into the kingdom of his Son.

The final reason why we should be thankful that is given in this passage is because we have been redeemed through the blood of Christ and obtained forgiveness of sins. Redemption and forgiveness are the two great benefits of our salvation. The Greek word translated as “redemption” means “a releasing or liberation brought about by payment of ransom; a deliverance.” Because Jesus paid the debt that we owed on the cross, He has freed us from our imprisonment to sin and our enslavement to the devil. Sin and Satan only have the power over us that we allow because, in Christ, we are free.

The Greek word Paul uses to describe forgiveness means: a pardon of sins, letting them go as if they had never been committed; a remission of the penalty. When we talk about forgiving our fellow humans, we rarely regard them as though they have never done us wrong. Rarer even are circumstances where we would prevent restitution from being given if it were possible to do so. Yet, this is how God forgives those who come under the blood of Jesus Christ. He treats us as sons and daughters, as though we have never sinned, because all of our sins are washed away in the blood. Furthermore, He does not enforce the penalty we owe for our sins. We all deserve eternal hell and separation from God; but, because Jesus suffered our hell and our separation on the cross, we do not have to pay that penalty.

Few of us live according to the reality of our standing in Christ. We live with guilt, frustration, shame, and regret. But, what Paul wants the Colossian believers to understand is that their standing with God is not determined by what the devil reminds them of from their past lives; it is determined only by what Christ has done and by what the Word of God says. Would we live differently if we really believed that we are redeemed and forgiven? Would we pray differently if we lived like we are redeemed and forgiven? Redemption and forgiveness are the main reason why we can come to God with thanksgiving in our prayers.

Horatius Bonar wrote:

Holy Father, hear my cry;

Holy Savior, bend Thine ear;

Holy Spirit, come Thou nigh;

Father, Savior, Spirit, hear.

Father, save me from my sin;

Savior, I Thy mercy crave;

Gracious Spirit, make me clean:

Father, Savior, Spirit, save.

Father, let me taste Thy love;

Savior, fill my soul with peace;

Spirit, come my heart to move:

Father, Son, and Spirit, bless.

Father, Son, and Spirit—Thou

One Jehovah, shed abroad

All Thy grace within me now;

Be my Father and my God.

Now, if you are with us today, and you do not know the Lord Jesus Christ as your Saviour, your first prayer needs to be what we call the Sinner’s Prayer. First, please understand that you are a sinner, just as I am, and that you have broken God’s laws.

Now this is bad news, but here’s the good news. Jesus Christ said in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

Just believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead by the power of God for you so that you can live eternally with Him.

For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I now believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life today. Amen.

If you just trusted Jesus Christ as your Saviour, and you prayed that prayer and meant it from your heart, I declare to you that based upon the Word of God, you are now saved from Hell and you are on your way to Heaven. Welcome to the family of God! Congratulations on trusting Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour. You have done the most important thing in life. LISTEN: “God, Prepare Us…” — A Prayer for the New Year and Beyond with Daniel Whyte III

Daniel Whyte IIIDaniel Whyte III

TEXT: EPHESIANS 2:10

For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

——-

Last year, God gave me a prayer that I want to share with you as we enter the new year. It is called “The Life Prayer,” and it goes like this:

God, prepare us for good days and bad days,

prepare us for celebrations and tragedies,

prepare us for weddings and funerals,

prepare us for life and death.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

None of us know what the new year will bring. However, if it is anything like this old year, it will be a mixture of highs and lows, joy and pain. There will be some good in it and some bad in it. There will be some celebration and some tragedy. And we need to be prepared for everything that comes our way. What we learn from Ephesians 2:10 is that, through whatever events we face, God is working on us and is using all of those circumstances to move us into the place where he wants us to be, primarily spiritually, but also in other areas of life. As we enter the new year and prepare to face good days and bad days, celebrations and tragedies, weddings and funerals, life and death, there are three things we ought to remember.

First, understand that we are the work of God. That is what Paul means when he says “we are his workmanship.” The Greek word translated as “workmanship” means “that which has been made”; it refers to “the works of God as creator.” God is literally creating, molding, shaping, and making us into what He wants us to be. Everything that happened to us in 2018 and every thing that will happen to us in 2019 has been used and will be used in that process. Thus, we ought to pray, “God, prepare us” for everything that we will face.

Second, understand that we are on our way to doing good works for God. Why is God working on us? Why is He allowing us to go through the ups and downs of life? It is because He is preparing us to do “good works” as believers. We have been born again (or “created”) in Christ Jesus for this purpose. Dr. Warren Wiersbe said, “Christ finished His work of redemption on the cross, but He arose from the dead and returned to heaven. There He carries on His unfinished work of perfecting His church. Christ is equipping us for our walk and our work here on earth. To do this, He uses three special tools: the Word of God, prayer, and suffering. As we read God’s Word, understand it, meditate on it, and feed on it, the Word goes to work in our lives to cleanse us and nourish us. As we pray, God’s Spirit works in us to release power. And as we suffer, the Spirit of God ministers to us. Suffering drives us back to the Word and prayer, and the cycle is repeated.”

Friend, don’t leave the old year glad that the year is over, ready to throw off all the old experiences. Learn from those experiences, both good and bad, and let God teach you, train you, and prepare you for good works in the future.

Third, understand that God has already worked out a plan for your life. That is what Scripture means when it says “God hath before ordained…” The plan for your life is already set up. However, it is up to us to remain committed to that plan and to not rebel against God’s working out of that plan in our lives. Wiersbe comments, “This is an amazing statement. It means that God has a plan for our lives and that we should walk in His will and fulfill His plan. [This passage] is talking about the gracious plan of a loving heavenly Father, who wills the very best for us.”

Yes, even in the midst of good days and bad days, celebrations and tragedies, weddings and funerals, life and death, God is working out the very best for us. We may not always see the outcome of that plan. Many negative things will happen that will make us question whether the plan is really good. Circumstances will sometimes tempt us to walk in a way that we know is not God’s will. However, we can overcome everything that we face in the new year if we stop now and throughout the year to ask God to prepare us for what may come.

God, prepare us for good days and bad days,

prepare us for celebrations and tragedies,

prepare us for weddings and funerals,

prepare us for life and death.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

LISTEN: “God, Prepare Us…” — A Prayer for the New Year with Daniel Whyte III
