LISTEN: TD Jakes rebukes suicide spirit from John Gray; Jazmine Barnes’ death case of mistaken identity (BCNN1, 01/08/19)

According to Christian Post, Bishop T.D. Jakes, senior pastor of The Potter’s House in Dallas, Texas, rebuked a spirit of suicide from fellow megachurch Pastor John Gray on Saturday, just days after Gray revealed he had been contemplating suicide. In a recording of his sermon to his church on New Year’s Eve, Gray said, “I literally thought about how I could end my life and still get to Heaven and somehow my kids would not be scarred but there was no way I could figure out how to do it. And I’m not the only person that thought about that. I’m not the only person the devil attacked in that area.”

According to CNN, Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said on Sunday that the death of a 7-year-old girl in a drive-by shooting in Houston was most likely a case of “mistaken identity” involving two suspects, one of whom is in police custody. Jazmine Barnes was riding in a car with her mother and sisters on December 30 when someone in another vehicle shot her in the head. Eric Black Jr. was arrested Saturday in a traffic stop for not using his turn signal. He is accused of driving the car used in Jazmine’s death and faces a charge of capital murder. The sheriff declined to name the second person or say if the person was in police custody.

According to Christian Post, Pastor Rich Nathan of Vineyard Columbus has announced that in two years time he will hand over the leadership of the church and move on to a new position. Nathan, who leads one of Ohio’s largest megachurches with an average weekly attendance of close to 8,000 people, explained on his website that he wants to make sure people don’t mistake the announcement for any suggestion that he is retiring from ministry.

According to Christian Post, The persecution of Christians around the world is expected to increase in 2019, with a watchdog group sharing particular concern for believers in Nigeria, China, and India. Release International, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary, said in a press release that 215 million believers face violence and discrimination for their faith.

According to Baptist Press, Ronnie Floyd, president of the National Day of Prayer Task Force, has introduced a new quarterly magazine, PRAY. While PRAY will seek to “encourage and equip Christians in how to pray more effectively,” Floyd noted to Baptist Press that “it is also published for men and women who lead local church prayer ministries.” Floyd said the National Day of Prayer publication “is just one tool we are using to mobilize unified public prayer for America.”

According to The Sun, Michelle Obama is being hotly tipped for the 2020 Presidential race with her global book tour helping spike approval ratings. However, she has denied wanting to follow in the footsteps of her husband Barack. Her memoir Becoming has topped the bestseller list since being published in November, and her live appearances sold out in minutes. Some polls are rating the Democrat above Donald Trump in the eyes of American voters.

According to The Associated Press, a powerful winter storm unleashed mudslides in Southern California wildfire burn areas and trapped motorists on a major highway, and the northern part of the state braced for more wet weather. Saturday’s deluge loosened hillsides where a major blaze burned last year in and around Malibu, clogging the Pacific Coast Highway with mud and debris. A stretch of the scenic route northwest of Los Angeles was expected to remain closed in both directions while crews tow away stuck vehicles and clear lanes. No injuries were reported.

According to The Associated Press, Thousands of Orthodox Christian worshippers plunged into icy rivers and lakes across Bulgaria on Sunday to recover crucifixes cast by priests in ceremonies commemorating the baptism of Jesus Christ. Tradition holds that the person who retrieves the wooden cross will be freed from evil spirits and will be healthy throughout the year. After the cross is fished out, the priest sprinkles believers with water using a bunch of basil. Epiphany is held every year on Jan. 6 and marks the end of the 12 days of Christmas.

According to the Associated Press, The Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople on Sunday presented a decree of independence to the head of the nascent Orthodox Church of Ukraine, formally severing it from the Russian Orthodox Church. In Istanbul, Patriarch Bartholomew I presented the Tomos, a scroll containing the decree, in a symbolic ceremony sanctifying the Ukrainian church’s independence. He signed the decree a day earlier. Until the decree, the Orthodox church in Ukraine that was a branch of the Russian church was considered legitimate and two others in Ukraine were regarded as schismatic. The new church unites the two formerly schismatic bodies.

According to Christian Post, The U.S. House of Representatives, now controlled by a Democratic majority, has voted to end a 181-year-old rule banning religious headwear. The House voted 234-197 on Thursday, which comes in the wake of the election of its first two female Muslim members. The newly revised rule still bans headwear of the nonreligious kind, and reads: “During the session of the House, a Member, Delegate, or Resident Commissioner may not wear nonreligious headdress or a hat or remain by the Clerk’s desk during the call of the roll or the counting of ballots.”

LISTEN: Trump addresses nation on border security; Tennessee’s governor commutes life sentence of Cyntoia Brown (UCNN, 01/08/19)

According to USA Today, As the partial government shutdown approaches a record length, President Donald Trump addressed the nation Tuesday on what he called the crisis at the nation’s border. Trump said he will visit the U.S.-Mexican border Thursday to promote his plan for a wall to keep out undocumented immigrants, the sticking point in negotiations with Democrat to reopen the government. White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders posted on Twitter, Trump will “meet with those on the front lines of the national security and humanitarian crisis” at the border. “More details will be announced soon.”

According to Reuters, Tennessee’s governor on Monday commuted the life sentence of a woman convicted as a teenager of murdering a man who paid to have sex with her, after Kim Kardashian and other celebrities took up her cause. Cyntoia Brown, now 30, was found guilty of first-degree murder in the killing of Johnny Allen, a 43-year-old Nashville real estate agent. She will walk out of prison on Aug. 7 after serving 15 years. Brown was 16 at the time of the murder. Without the governor’s commutation, she would not have been eligible to be considered for parole until 2055 at the earliest.

According to Reuters, the Islamic State said one of its suicide bombers killed some people on Monday at a military base in Syria’s Raqqa city, which is under control of a U.S.- backed and Kurdish-led militia. The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), led by Kurds, said a militant blew himself up in a blast that killed one civilian and injured several of its fighters. Though the SDF did not say where the blast took place, two Raqqa residents reached by Reuters said they heard an explosion in a central district of the city housing military offices.

According to USA Today, Supreme Court Associate Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg was absent from oral arguments Monday while recovering from surgery for lung cancer, a first in her 25-year career on the court. Ginsburg underwent surgery Dec. 21 to remove two cancerous growths from her left lung. She was released five days later and has been recovering at home. Chief Justice John Roberts made note of Ginsburg’s absence briefly at the beginning of the session. He said the justice “is unable to be present today but will participate” in deciding the two cases being argued by reading legal briefs and transcripts of the oral arguments.

LISTEN: The Scripture & the Sense: Jeremiah 48 (with Daniel Whyte III)

Daniel Whyte III reads the Word of God on a daily basis and give the sense of it based on an authoritative commentary source such as Matthew Henry’s Commentary On the Bible. This podcast is based upon Nehemiah 8:8 where it says Ezra and the Levites “read in the book in the law of God distinctly, and gave the sense, and caused them to understand the reading.” The aim of this podcast is that through the simple reading of the Word of God and the giving of the sense of it, the church would be revived and the world would be awakened.

Today we are reading Jeremiah 48.

LISTEN: Jesus is Calling; Will You Follow?, Part 4 (Just Jesus Evangelistic Campaign, Day 650 since Jan. 20, 2017 / Day 1,015 since Jan. 1, 2016 with Daniel Whyte III)

TEXT: Matthew 9:9-13

9 And as Jesus passed forth from thence, he saw a man, named Matthew, sitting at the receipt of custom: and he saith unto him, Follow me. And he arose, and followed him.

10 And it came to pass, as Jesus sat at meat in the house, behold, many publicans and sinners came and sat down with him and his disciples.

11 And when the Pharisees saw it, they said unto his disciples, Why eateth your Master with publicans and sinners?

12 But when Jesus heard that, he said unto them, They that be whole need not a physician, but they that are sick.

13 But go ye and learn what that meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice: for I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.

——-

John Abbott said, “God is far better pleased with the exercise of kindness and good will between men, than by punctilious observance of rites and forms.”

The Pharisees showed up at the feast where Jesus was dining with Matthew, His disciples, and “many” other publicans and sinners. They raised questions about why Jesus, clearly a holy and righteous man, was doing something they would never dream of doing — sitting at meat with those who were clearly sinners. Jesus rebukes them first with an argument from human logic: “They that be whole need not a physician, but they that are sick.” In other words, “If my aim as a righteous man is to help others get in a right relationship with God, it makes perfect sense for me to spend my time with those who are separated from God by their unrighteousness and know it.

Jesus follows that argument with an argument from the Old Testament Scriptures which the Pharisees held in high regard. He says, “Go ye and learn what that meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice: for I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.” The Pharisees would have been insulted by the suggestion that they did not understand the Scriptures. They had the “law” part of the equation down pat. They understood that sinners were rightly condemned by God. However, they did not understand why God, or in this case Jesus, would show mercy to sinners. So, Jesus gives them some homework. He tells them, “Go ye and learn what that meaneth…” ‘Go back to the Scriptures and study.’

The words Jesus quotes next, “I will have mercy, and not sacrifice,” come from the Prophet Hosea who rebuked the Israelites because they continued to bring sacrifices and observe the religious holy days, but they did not carry the spirit of the law in their hearts. They felt that their strict observances justified them. They had no concept of God’s mercy or compassion toward them or the mercy and compassion God desired them to show to others. Albert Barnes writes that Jesus used this Old Testament quote to say, “I [and, by extension, God] is more pleased with acts of benevolence and kindness than with a mere external compliance with the duties of religion.”

The Pharisees readily complied with outward religious duties. But they never would have done what Jesus did in order to invite sinners into the kingdom of God. They never would have sat and dined with those who were sick. Thus, Jesus rejects the self-righteous religious leaders who thought that their behavior justified them before God and embraces the sinners who knew they had no standing in God’s sight. Somewhat ironically He says, “I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.” (Ironic because the Pharisees were just as much sinners as the people they condemned.) That is what Jesus is still doing today — calling sinners to repentance. If you don’t think you need to repent, you are not ready to receive what Jesus has to offer. Until you are convicted of your own sins and are convinced of your own unworthiness before God, you will never be ready to receive Jesus. However, once you realize that you are indeed a sinner, you can hear and respond to Christ’s call to repentance and salvation.

Charles Wesley wrote:

Sinners, believe the Gospel word,

Jesus is come your souls to save

Jesus is come, your common Lord;

Pardon ye all through Him may have,

May now be saved, whoever will;

This Man receiveth sinners still.

See where the lame, the halt, the blind,

The deaf, the dumb, the sick, the poor,

Flock to the Friend of human kind,

And freely all accept their cure;

To whom did He His help deny?

Whom in His days of flesh pass by?

Did not His Word the fiends expel,

The lepers cleanse, and raise the dead?

Did He not all their sickness heal,

And satisfy their every need?

Did He reject His helpless clay,

Or send them sorrowful away?

Sinners, believe the Gospel word,

Jesus is come your souls to save

Jesus is come, your common Lord;

Pardon ye all through Him may have,

May now be saved, whoever will;

This Man receiveth sinners still.

——-

Now, if you are with us today and you do not know Jesus Christ as your Savior, allow me to show you how you can place your faith and trust in Him for Salvation from sin and Hell.

First, accept the fact that you are a sinner, and that you have broken God’s law. The Bible says in Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”

Second, accept the fact that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death…”

Third, accept the fact that you are on the road to hell. Jesus Christ said in Matthew 10:28: “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” Also, the Bible states in Revelation 21:8: “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”

Now that is bad news, but here’s the good news. Jesus Christ said in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Just believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead by the power of God for you so that you can live eternally with Him. Pray and ask Him to come into your heart today, and He will.

Romans 10:9 & 13 says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved… For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

If you believe that Jesus Christ died on the Cross for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead, and you want to trust Him for your Salvation today, please pray with me this simple prayer: Holy Father God, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. I am sorry for my sins, and today I choose to turn from my sins. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. I trust Jesus Christ as my Savior and I choose to follow Him as Lord from this day forward. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life today. Amen.

If you believed in your heart that Jesus Christ died on the Cross, was buried, and rose again, allow me to say, congratulations on doing the most important thing in life and that is accepting Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour! For more information to help you grow in your newfound faith in Christ, go to Gospel Light Society.com and read “What To Do After You Enter Through the Door”. 13 But go ye and learn what that meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice: for I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.

——-

C.S. Lewis said, “Christianity tells people to repent and promises them forgiveness. It therefore has nothing to say to people who do not know they have done anything to repent of and who do not feel that they need any forgiveness. When you know you are sick, you will listen to the doctor.”

After Jesus calls Matthew to follow Him, and Matthew responds by following Jesus, we are told that Jesus and His disciples shared a meal in a house. While this passage is commonly interpreted to mean that they ate in Matthew’s house, the text here does not say so explicitly. The Greek word translated as “house” can be broadly rendered as many types of buildings, leading some commentators to state that this feast may have very well taken place in a public hall or other accomodation and that scores, and possibly hundreds of folk, came to eat with Jesus. Certainly, with Jesus at the feast, there was no shortage of food and drink.

Briefly, I want to draw your attention to those who CAME TO SIT. Verse 10 says, “Behold, many publicans and sinners came and sat down with him and his disciples.” Jesus’ reputation as a prophet, a miracle-worker, and a holy man would have likely made publicans and sinners hesitant to approach Him. They would have assumed that this Jesus was just like all the other religious leaders they had dealt with. However, the word spread that Matthew, a publican, one of the most hated individuals in Palestine, had been called and accepted by Jesus. When they heard that Jesus embraced Matthew, the lowest of the low, they thought to themselves, “This Jesus is different. There might be a place for me at Jesus’ table.” Thus we read that “many publicans and sinners” came to eat with Jesus and his disciples. Colloquially, crowds are often criticized. However, the crowd in this instance had the right idea. They came running to sit and dine with Jesus.

Now, notice those who CAME TO SEE. Wherever there is a crowd, there are spectators. And verse 11 informs us that the Pharisees came not only to look, but to criticize. “When the Pharisees saw it, they said unto his disciples, Why eateth your Master with publicans and sinners?” The Pharisees were always looking for ways to discredit Jesus, and here they saw Him doing something that they found distasteful, something that they themselves would never do — sharing a meal with the outcasts of society, the scum of the earth, the worst of sinners. They asked this question of the disciples for two reasons: First, they did not want to face Jesus themselves as He had proven repeatedly that He was not afraid of them. And, second, they thought they could instigate a revolt among the disciples. But, of course, no matter how quietly they whispered these thoughts, Jesus knew them before they even spoke.

Thus, we must turn our attention to the one who CAME TO SAVE. Verse 12 says, “When Jesus heard that, he said unto them, They that be whole need not a physician, but they that are sick.” Jesus, of course, knew that the Pharisees were the sickest of the sick. Only they would not admit it. Thus, Christ’s response is somewhat sarcastic. ‘Why should I dine with you? You don’t need what I have to offer.’ In contrast, the “sick” who Jesus ministered to knew that they were ill and needed a physician. F.W. Farrar said, “While Christ denounced the scribes and Pharisees, He had for sinners only the call of tenderness; to sinners only was His special mission; sinners were His special care; it was the lost sheep over which the Good Shepherd yearned; it was for the wanderers that His heart seemed to burst with tenderness. Thus, He gathered the publicans to His discourses. He sat at their feasts. He chose a publican for His host. He nominated a publican to be His apostle.”

Yes, Jesus made room for publicans and sinners at His table. In fact, the table was made for them. It was made for you — but only if you’re willing to admit that you are sick, that you are lost, that you are desperate. Because the Great Physician came to save.

Charles Wesley wrote:

Jesus, the sinner’s friend, to Thee,

Lost and undone, for aid I flee,

Weary of earth, myself, and sin:

Open Thine arms, and take me in.

Pity and heal my sin sick soul;

‘Tis Thou alone canst make me whole;

Dark, till in me Thine image shine,

And lost, I am, till Thou art mine.

At last I own it cannot be

That I should fit myself for Thee:

Here, then, to Thee I all resign;

Thine is the work, and only Thine.

What shall I say Thy grace to move?

Lord, I am sin, but Thou art love;

I give up every plea beside—

Lord, I am lost, but Thou hast died.

LISTEN: Practical Duties for the Christian in this Present Age, Part 3 (Second Coming Chapel with Daniel Whyte III)

Daniel Whyte IIIDaniel Whyte III

TEXT: Matthew 25:31-46

31 When the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory:

32 And before him shall be gathered all nations: and he shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divideth his sheep from the goats:

33 And he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left.

34 Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world:

35 For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in:

36 Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me.

37 Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink?

38 When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee?

39 Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee?

40 And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.

41 Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:

42 For I was an hungred, and ye gave me no meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink:

43 I was a stranger, and ye took me not in: naked, and ye clothed me not: sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not.

44 Then shall they also answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, or athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto thee?

45 Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me.

46 And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.

— PRAYER —

Practical Duties for the Christian in this Present Age, Part 3

William Burkitt said, “When Christ comes to reward his children and people, they will wonder and be astonished at the poverty and meanness of their own services, and at the transcendency and greatness of his rewards.”

From this passage we learn that, at the Judgment of the Gentile Nations, Jesus Christ will raise the subject of how Gentile believers, such as you and me, treated our neighbors. The good deeds the Lord describes are those that He Himself carried out when He was on this earth. He set the example for us by providing, often through miraculous means, for the needs of others. We ought to follow in His footsteps by doing relatively simple things such as: feeding the hungry, giving drink to the thirsty, clothing the naked, welcoming the stranger, visiting the sick, and visiting those in need.

These things are not hard. However, they do go against our flesh and our human nature which naturally causes us to be selfish. We are prone to think of how we need to fed, how our thirst needs to be quenched, how we need to be clothed and welcomed and visited. Most of us only think of others in extraordinary circumstances. C.S. Lewis said, “Selfishness is the first sin behind all others. At this very moment, you and I are either committing it, or about to commit it, or repenting of it.”

Some people even do good works with selfish motives. Jesus rebuked this behavior in the Pharisees who sounded a trumpet and stood on the street corners whenever they were about to give to the poor. Notice the response of the Gentile believers when Jesus praises them for their concern for others. “Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink? When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee? Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee?”

The righteous think nothing of their good deeds. They are surprised that Jesus has taken note. They did not do those things to be noticed. They felt they were doing their reasonable service. This shows us that Jesus is paying attention to all of our actions — the good and the bad, the small and the large, the important and the seemingly insignificant. He sees it all, takes note of it, and will reward (or punish) us accordingly.

William G. Schell wrote:

Life on earth is but a vapor,

Soon we’ll lay these bodies down;

But if we continue faithful,

We shall wear the victor’s crown—

Brighter than the stars of heaven,

Brighter than the dazzling sun,

We shall shine among the ransomed,

When our work on earth is done.

I would not give up my title

To that future world of bliss

For the shining gold and silver

Of a thousand worlds like this;

I would rather bear affliction,

Be a hated pilgrim here,

Miss the diadems terrestrial,

And obtain a crown up there.

Let us then be up and doing,

We have but a few more days,

Priceless souls of men to rescue

From their dark and sinful ways;

Courage, brother, work and suffer,

Till this fleeting life is past;

God will recompense our labors

With a great reward at last.

Now, if you are not a believer in Jesus Christ, I urge you to trust in Him because He is coming again and you do not want to be left behind. Here is how you can place your faith and trust in Him for Salvation from sin and the consequences of sin.

Amen.

If you just trusted Jesus Christ as your Saviour, and you prayed that prayer and meant it from your heart, I declare to you that based upon the Word of God, you are now saved from Hell and you are on your way to Heaven. Welcome to the family of God! Congratulations on doing the most important thing in life and that is receiving Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour. For more information to help you grow in your newfound faith in Christ, go to Gospel Light Society.com and read “What To Do After You Enter Through the Door.” Jesus Christ said in John 10:9, “I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture.”

God loves you. We love you. And may God bless you.

LISTEN: The Scripture & the Sense: Jeremiah 3 (with Daniel Whyte III)

Daniel Whyte III reads the Word of God on a daily basis and give the sense of it based on an authoritative commentary source such as Matthew Henry’s Commentary On the Bible. This podcast is based upon Nehemiah 8:8 where it says Ezra and the Levites “read in the book in the law of God distinctly, and gave the sense, and caused them to understand the reading.” The aim of this podcast is that through the simple reading of the Word of God and the giving of the sense of it, the church would be revived and the world would be awakened.

Today we are reading Jeremiah 3.
