Why Write Romantic Suspense?
Have you ever ridden a roller coaster that jerks you around, goes into a tunnel, and you can’t see what’s ahead? Suddenly, you’re flipped upside down, and the sound of a waterfall rises above screams. Water splashes your body before emerging back into daylight.
It was the exhilarating thrill of the unexpected that took your breath away. The next thing you knew, you were searching for another equal or greater experience. Though your joyride only lasted two to three minutes before revealing the pivotal outcome, the desire for more surged through your body.
Reading romantic suspense, suspense, or thrillers works similarly, except you are sitting comfortably with your feet propped up, sipping on your favorite beverage, and furiously turning the pages of a novel in anticipation of what will happen next.
Will the killer break into the house? Who is hiding behind the door? Will someone kidnap her baby? Why is the butcher knife on the floor? Is that blood oozing out from under the kitchen cabinet?
Writing romantic suspense is fun and challenging and a continual thrill. Developing a realistic yet fictional story with a hero and heroine in dangerous situations while dealing with a broken relationship keeps authors on their toes to ensure the struggles and emotions are relative to the scenes.
Heart-pounding experiences are endless when it comes to reading suspenseful books. The thrill lasts hours instead of a couple of minutes and is memorable.
Threads of romance and tidbits of inspiration woven delicately through high-octane action are why I love writing “inspirational romantic suspense.”

Traps that Hold Us Back #1
QUESTIONS!
Children are notorious for asking questions. They are busybodies and inquisitive, and they will keep asking until you answer them. People do not intimidate them like they might do as we mature.
“What’s that?”
“Why can’t I play in the street?”
“Where does milk come from?”
“How did you get bigger than me?”
These are simple questions, but we must answer them so they will learn.
The same goes for adults.
The first writer’s conference I attended over fourteen years ago blew my mind. I knew writing had become my calling, but I was clueless about how to get started. As I walked around the hotel, I overheard people talking about turning in a proposal or writing a synopsis, even a query letter. My insides churned as stress overwhelmed me. I was out of my element, or so I thought.
I’m an introvert by nature, so stepping into an unfamiliar crowd had already made me feel vulnerable and less than. I searched for individuals who looked as frightened as me and befriended them. Whew! Now, I wasn’t alone and could quietly ask them questions without feeling ignorant. The funny thing was, they didn’t know the answers either.
We can fall into many traps when we embark on a new endeavor. Besides being extremely nervous and not wanting to sound uneducated, we withhold all those thoughts buzzing around in our heads and hope no one asks us a question we cannot answer correctly.
Have you ever whispered questions to someone close by, hoping no one would hear or judge you for not knowing? I’ll be the first to raise my hand. None of us want to come across as unprepared.
We are our own worst judges.
The fact is, there are no dumb questions when bettering yourself and learning a new craft. This is how we learn, just like children do.
After forcing myself to step out of that introverted shell, I found strength in knowing others needed insight into writing terms and writing lingo, too. I purposely swallowed my fears, stepped forward, and began asking questions. Guess what? No one condemned me or made fun of me. Many of them became some of my closest writing friends. My insight grew by leaps and bounds. I learned how to write and communicate on a sophisticated level. Well, maybe not sophisticated. Let’s say I learned.
Just remember, regardless of your status as a newbie in any field. Don’t let low self-esteem, shyness, or being an introvert stop you from seeking the wisdom and knowledge you need to pursue your dreams.
Blessings,
Loretta

Talk the Talk
Years ago, one of the first things I discovered as I stood in the background at a writer’s conference, listening to a room full of attendees talk, was I needed to learn writer’s lingo. I cringed at the thought of someone asking me about a pitch when all I could imagine was the pitcher at a ballgame. That couldn’t be right. My introverted self didn’t want to speak to anyone because I had no clue what they were talking about, and I didn’t want to show my ignorance.
What do I mean by writer’s lingo?
Look at it this way. If you love baking, you understand what adding a pinch here and a dash there means. You let the yeast rise and carefully fold or knead the dough. You pre-heat the oven and bake until golden brown. Get the picture? Sounds simple enough if you are a cook.
As a mechanic, you know tire pressures, exhaust systems, oil levels, and battery life. Whereas, I have heard ‘mechanic lingo’, but that doesn’t mean I understand the depth of their meaning.
At writer’s conferences, authors mention a pitch, tagline, synopsis, proposal, dark moment, one sheet, inner struggle, transitional sentence, and a mountain of other expressions. What I quickly learned about a Christian writer’s conference is ‘no question is a dumb question.’ Every author has a beginning, and they understand what it feels like to be in your shoes. Most are happy to explain or share their experiences to help you understand.
Backstory – Everything that has happened before your story begins.Character Arc—How the character changes and grows in achieving a goal or solving a problem.Setting—The background or environment for the action of a fictional work.Elevator Pitch—A short 60-90-second speech describing your manuscript.Query Letter—A special cover letter that sells your manuscript to a publisher.Hook—A short sentence used to attract interest or attention.
Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed
and who correctly handles the word of truth. 2 Timothy 2:15 NIV
To learn the writing process and its descriptive words, you must step out of your comfort zone and pursue your dreams. Dive in, write, and study. Be persistent, and don’t let the enemy deter you from your calling.
Learning to write, whether fiction or nonfiction, is challenging but fun and rewarding.
You can do it. Just don’t give up.
Feel free to ask questions in the comments, too. I’ve been writing for about twelve years, but that doesn’t mean I know everything. Writing is an ever-learning process.
Blessings,
