2025 Word(s) for the Year
Some people select a word for the year as a personal focus for their new year. I selected Steadfast as my word for the next twelve months. I desire to remain steadfast and jump any hurdles that come my way with a positive attitude, unwavering in my actions and faith.
Then, on January 4, as I surfed social media, I ran across a post by DaySpring inviting people to take their word for the year quiz. I do not participate in quizzes like this, but it captured my interest. I clicked on the post, and it took me to their website. Several questions popped up, so I played along and answered them. In a few seconds, it generated my word for the year. Create. I liked it.
Since “create” hits home with me and correlates with writing, I’ve claimed both words for 2025.
Steadfast and Create
I plan to press forward and create more inspirational romantic suspense stories for readers looking for a clean read and remain steadfast in everything I do.
What about you? Do you select a word, phrase, or scripture verse for the year? I’d love to hear what you’ve chosen.
Happy New Year!
Blessings,
Loretta

Inviting Laughter Into Seasons of Despair by Karisa Moore
“A joyful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones” (Proverbs 17:22, ESV).
Not long after my oldest son’s death, I needed a laughter reality check. I am a solemn person, and grief intensified my lack of humor. Winter had set in, and we were cooped up in the house. I kept getting sick, and the discs in my lower back weren’t staying in place. My bones literally ached with sorrow, and I gave into bitterness over my loss. Little things that I would have previously shrugged off weighed heavier on me. I sunk inward. My husband snapped me out of my funk with a funny post about a local police station that had put out an APB on Elsa for all of the foot of snow that shut down our community. The description went viral. Why? Because laughter is good medicine.
A joyful heart combats my sorrow and changes my focus on Jesus rather than my circumstances. What a good God to make laughter and tears such close neighbors. I can acknowledge pain and then release it. I can be in the middle of sobs, and then my daughter says something quirky, and I am instantly in stitches laughing. As I grieved, I invited friends to send me jokes. I need to laugh. I need to find the splinter of light in my shattered heart. Do we think the God of the universe who put together the platypus, and porcupine was humorless? Jesus cultivated laughter in serious circumstances. He spent time at the party and in fellowship with others.
If the God of the universe loves laughter and deems a cheerful heart good medicine, then what are we doing to promote healthy laughter? Look around you. There is humor everywhere. A joyful heart gives us a clearer view of reality! It puts problems on the outside rather than keeping them trapped inside our souls.
Karisa Moore knows what it’s like to cry out to God with groans that words cannot express. Losing her oldest son in 2014 to suicide, she is expanding our mental health vocabulary to include Christ-centered hope through creative expression.
She embraces life alongside her husband and two living children. She loves long hikes, photography, and great stories. Karisa is the author of Broken Butterflies: Emerging Through Grief and Turn the Page: Devotions to Help the Griever Hope. Seek Wisdom by DiAnn Mills
Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be still wiser;
teach a righteous man, and he will increase in learning. Proverbs 9:9 ESV
Biblical wisdom is a remarkable friend, a true companion for all times and all situations. Wisdom is mentioned in the Bible approximately 228 times, which says God wants us to seek wisdom and apply it to our lives. Its traits are birthed in God’s character.
What does seeking wisdom mean from God’s perspective? Here are 10 truths about pursuing wisdom.
True wisdom only comes from God.
For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding (Proverbs 2:6).
True wisdom is birthed in Scripture. If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him (James 1:5).
True wisdom begins with a fear of God.The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight (Proverbs 9:10).
True wisdom doesn’t mean a high IQ.But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong; 28 God chose what is low and despised in the world, even things that are not, to bring to nothing things that are, 29 so that no human being[a] might boast in the presence of God (1 Corinthians 1:27-29).
True wisdom grows our relationship with God.Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.
6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths (Proverbs 3:5-6).
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law (Galatians 5:22-23).
True wisdom helps us unravel the evils of the world.Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:6-7).
True wisdom is a constant knocking on God’s door.Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you (Matthew 7:7).
True wisdom is our spiritual legacy. We will not hide them from their children but tell to the coming generation the glorious deeds of the Lord, and his might, and the wonders that he has done (Psalm 78:4).
True wisdom glorifies God.Who is wise and understanding among you? By his good conduct let him show his works in the meekness of wisdom. 14 But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast and be false to the truth.15 This is not the wisdom that comes down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. 16 For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every vile practice. 17 But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere. 18 And a harvest of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace (James 3:13-18).
Wisdom is our friend and loyal companion. Do you have tips to keep wisdom a priority in your life?

A Soft Response by Loretta Eidson
A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger. Proverbs 15:1 (NIV)
Red-faced, hands thrashing through the air, mouth spewing anger settles nothing other than the self-satisfaction of telling someone off in a display of embarrassing behavior. Some may refer to the episode as “blowing a gasket.”
Be honest. Have you ever experienced a moment like this?
One time, twenty years ago, during my son’s rebellious and disrespectful young adult years, anger got the best of me. I literally screamed and pounded my head against the wall in total frustration because he refused to do what I asked of him. I backed against the door and slid to the floor, crying.
It takes a lot to make me mad, but that day he pushed me beyond my emotional limits. Sad to admit, I probably went into an all-out rage. That kind of behavior is not my nature, and I regretted my outburst and lack of self-control.
Afterward, I prayed and asked for God’s forgiveness, and my son’s. My actions did not settle the issue. It left me in a quagmire of remorse. Several days passed before I could forgive myself and let go of that awful outburst. A place I never want to go again, and to this day, I haven’t, but only by the grace of God.
Flying off at the mouth was ridiculously out of character for me. I allowed hurt from his defiance to push me over the cliff into a realm I’d never been before. It was I who suffered the consequences, not him.
It doesn’t pay to snap, be rude, or make critical remarks. Belittling others only reflects the condition of our hearts.
The book of Proverbs is full of life-giving verses, even one-liners. They touch on every aspect of living a life pleasing to God. I’ve read, reread, and quoted Proverbs 15:1 many times since then, reminding myself that it’s fruitless to respond to others in an angry tone. Not only does it put them on the defensive and stir their anger, but it also lowers your standard and Christian witness.
I learned quickly to bite my tongue, evaluate my response, and select my words wisely before speaking during a disagreement. Now, I purposefully pay attention to the inflection in my voice and use a soft tone during those situations.
Like the scripture says, “A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.”

Plans With a Purpose by Virginia Grounds
Many are the plans in the mind of a man,
But it is the purpose of the Lord that will stand.
Proverbs 19:21 ESV
“No more pages, how can that be?” That was my question when I realized my desk calendar ended at the end of June instead of December. It is a calendar in addition to a daily list that keeps me organized. As a multi-task person, they are critical.
This list includes what needs to be accomplished each day and a plan for how to do so. I was overwhelmed with frustration when I realized my daily lists were not recorded. The office supply store was sixty miles from my home, and ordering online did not allow me to see if the pages met my expectations.
Then, I was reminded that I could plan my schedules all I want, but if they are not committed to the Lord for His purpose, things may happen that show I am on the wrong path. The only thing guaranteed is what God has purposed. So, with the frustration came reevaluation.
What am I doing with my days that prevents me from following His plan rather than my own? There are new ideas and thoughts in my head constantly. But which of those is from my desire and which are God’s desire for me to accomplish His purpose?
With this new revelation and evaluation, I knew it was time to let go of things on my list of ‘to-do’s’. Serving God’s purpose is the most fulfilling thing we can do. When we get that right, plans are guaranteed to take place. The wonderful thing about it is that we each are given a calling and plan that is tailor-made just for us. He directs us as we seek Him and pray.
When working out a plan and nothing works as it should, perhaps it is time to ask questions. Have we prayed about it? Have we committed it to the Lord? Are we trying to accomplish it on our own strength? Do we need to let go of something? These are a few things to ponder before moving forward.
How does my story end? I have a new calendar, but I have also reduced my workload by letting go of something. Yes, I prayed and wrestled with the decision for two months, and the result was peace; therefore, I am confident it is God’s plan, not mine.
