Let Love Cover All Offenses by Kathy Collard Miller

Letting love cover all offenses is not as easy as it sounds. Proverbs 10:12 points out why it’s easier said than done. “Hatred stirs up strife, but love covers all offenses” (Proverbs 10:12)

What an important and powerful word picture Proverbs 10:12 gives about anger toward others. We can “stir up” wounds or “cover” them with love and understanding.

If we choose to “stir up,” we put the spoon of rehearsing hurts and misunderstandings into a pot of boiling mud and grime. Then we stir, stir, and stir causing any moisture of grace and mercy to evaporate. Then the mass solidifies into a hardened brick.

After such rehearsing, we want to throw a hardened brick formed by bitterness and resentment. We are easily tempted to hurl it at the offending party when she seems to be responding to us in hurtful ways. Or we think we feel better about ourselves by stacking brick after brick, building a wall of separation and distrust.

On the other hand, “covering” up is like taking the lid of that pot and securing it on top and throwing away the spoon. The lid is the forgiveness Jesus secured for us, which we did not earn nor deserve. We recognize how much we have been forgiven and must humbly apply it toward others.

No longer can we see the attractiveness of the boiling anger or have something to stir it with. Then we can gladly take the covered pot and throw it all away—even if it’s as heavy as a brick.

Ponder on these verses from Proverbs as you think of heart attitudes which can overcome bitterness and misunderstandings.

11:2: When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with the humble is wisdom.

11:12: Whoever belittles his neighbor lacks sense, but a man of understanding remains silent.

11:27: Whoever diligently seeks good seeks favor, but evil comes to him who searches for it.

12:18: There is one whose rash words are like sword thrusts, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.

19:11: Good sense makes one slow to anger, and it is his glory to overlook an offense.

20:22: Do not say, “I will repay evil”; wait for the Lord, and he will deliver you.

Which of these heart attitudes is one you want to grow in? How will you do that in God’s power?

Hope Deferred by Maureen Miller

Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a dream fulfilled is a tree of life  (Proverbs 13:12 NLT).

“…Void a miracle.”

What had the doctor said? I shook my head, attempting to wrap my mind around his words. “Pardon?”

“It’s unlikely you’ll have children biologically, void a miracle.” His furrowed brow spoke his concern.

My husband Bill leaned in, then pulled me close. Always my resolute protector, even when his heart, too, was hurting.

My hope for children seemed nothing more than smoldering embers, and, for a season, all passion waned. I lived in grays.

But…

God didn’t leave me in the ash heap. Rather, He began to speak His precious promises to my heart, breathing life back into flame.

Who am I?

“You are God.”

Be more specific.

“You’re my Shepherd.”

And?

“You’re the Giver of good gifts.”

Yes, and?

“You work miracles.”

And what’s necessary before the miracle?

This one stumped me, but God was, as He always is, patient. Finally, “Something needing a miracle.”

Yes—a situation when the only answer is Divine intervention.

Indeed. As a friend recently said—Every miracle begins with a problem.

Though my body was the product of a sin-sick world, unable to conceive a child, God has worked with this damaged, imperfect vessel—producing purpose from pain, bringing beauty from brokenness.

As I pressed in to the heart of my Shepherd, the Giver of good gifts, hope stirred. He promised me good rather than evil, a future and a hope, the fulfillment of dreams as I delighted in Him, and fruitfulness, like a flourishing tree planted by rivers of water.

Guess what! Over time, His Word—that which never returns void—strengthened me for a journey through barren lands. His Word equipped me to fight against the enemy of my soul who sought to rob, kill, and destroy my hope and joy. His Word filled me to overflowing, producing an abundant harvest of love, peace, and patience.

And eventually, true to His Word, God fulfilled the promise He’d spoken to my heart not long after that physician’s prognosis snatched my breath. Though my dream—my hope to be a momma—was deferred for more than half a dozen years, when we adopted our first child, I flourished as a mother. And after all these years, two more born-in-my-heart children and three grand-girls later, I’m still flourishing. Not because of any abilities or qualities of my own, but because of the relationship I’m invited to enjoy—to delight in the Lord…

Yes, to experience the joy of dreams fulfilled!

A Woman Who Fears the Lord by Shadia Hrichi

The story of Rahab has fascinated Bible students and laypersons for centuries. Her story appears in a mere two chapters in the book of Joshua, and the events are curious right from the start. The book opens with God commissioning Joshua to lead the Israelites after the death of their leader Moses. Yet no sooner do the people come to the edge of the Promised Land than God puts the whole drama on hold to tell us the story of a Canaanite prostitute.

This interruption of the conquest story is not an accident, and it gives us our first glimpse into the theological significance of Rahab’s story.

When we come to the New Testament, Rahab holds a surprisingly prominent position in several key faith passages. For starters, she is listed in the lineage of Christ! She even marries a prince! The prostitute marries a prince! This is the stuff of Hollywood movies and romance novels. The heartbeat of the Bible is God’s passionate pursuit of His adulterous bride—a theme that echoes within the depths of every human heart.

I have a secret to share with you: Rahab’s story is our story.

It’s a story centered on three key themes, without which there would be no Bible, no gospel, and no Savior. These themes are faith, grace, and salvation. Here is a woman who witnessed no miracles and knew none of God’s laws. She merely heard of God’s power and, in reverent fear, believed.

Through her daring faith, Rahab hid enemy spies, defied her king, risked her life, and found the living God. As a result, Rahab’s faith is called out in several key New Testament passages (not to mention she is listed in the lineage of Christ!). At the end of the day, it was Rahab’s revertant fear of the LORD that gave Rahab the courage to boldly step out in faith.

What would it look like for you follow Rahab’s example?

“Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised.” (Proverbs 31:30)

Trust in the Lord by Patty LaRoche

Proverbs 3:5-6, perhaps one of the most often-quoted scriptures, is loaded with nuggets of wisdom: Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight. The first four words are weighty ones.

“Trust in the Lord…” Not your Ferrari or your size-four body (although that would be sorta special) or your knack for rhubarb pie winning the blue ribbon at the county fair or your ability to enter a room and turn heads or your Martha Stewart table setting with real flowers or…well, you get the point. I’m afraid that too many of us talk about trusting in the Lord, but do we? Or do we “lean on our own understanding” and place our confidence in ourselves, and as long as no one has berated us or shown us up or one-upped us at our game of self-worth, we go to bed pleased with our day. And not once do we give credit to our Creator for endowing us with that giftedness.

In my book A Little Faith Lift…Finding Joy Beyond Rejection, I write about how much time we spend trying to measure up, comparing ourselves to others who always win the “Better Battle.” We aim to earn our value, not based on what God says about us, but what others say about us (or we silently say about ourselves). Teddy Roosevelt once stated, “Comparison is the thief of joy,” and he was right.

The problem with trying to “fit in” or “be better than” is that our attempts do not allow God to “make our paths straight.” We zig and we zag with everyone we meet, seeing something unique in them we want to see in ourselves, and continually wondering if we made the right move, said the right thing, dressed in the right style, and acted in the right way. Exhausting.

How much easier to recognize that God is the audience that counts, and in Him—and only Him—we can place our trust!

Repurposed by Cheryl Schuermann

Commit your work to the Lord, and your plans will be established. The LORD has made everything for its purpose. (Proverbs 16:3-4 ESV).

When my husband and I decided to build a turn-of-the-twentieth-century farmhouse on family land, searching for the old and neglected became our daily routine. Old doors with multiple layers of paint, antique washstands, and 1920s sinks caught our eye. We saw the potential and imagined what they could be. Dozens of tarnished century-old doorknobs, hinges, and escutcheons required hours upon hours of scrubbing with steel wool. Pulled from their home in rusty buckets, they were renewed and given new life according to their design. These and other items reinforced our farmhouse motto, Redeem…Restore…Repurpose.

One day, I mentioned to Stan the need for hooks in the guest bathroom. He looked thoughtful for a moment then left to rummage in the barn. He found a discarded hutch top, disassembled it, trimmed off what was no longer needed, and realigned the remaining pieces. The result was a stunning wall piece, complete with antique hooks. Not only did Stan make the piece visually pleasing, but he caused it to become good and useful, placing it back into service.

Just as we chose items to repurpose, God chooses us, not for what we are but for what we will be. He is the Master Builder and when we place ourselves in His hands, we flourish within His design. He rescues us from an unfruitful life, redeems and transforms us. We are made new and perfect for His glory.

The process of God remaking us for God’s service is described by Paul in Romans 12:2 as the renewing of our mind. This work is accomplished by the indwelling of the Holy Spirit as He conforms us to His Word. Proverbs 16:3-4 tells us to commit ourselves to the Lord and our plans will be established. Our mind, this most excellent and important part of us, is gradually renewed as we take in and consider the Scriptures.  The simple practice of reading, meditation, and prayer renders us useful for our new task, whether it’s service or teaching or encouraging others.

God promises to lift us out of our old way of life, out of that rusty bucket, and change us into something beautiful. The end result is we will be perfectly suited for our new purpose, for our new way of living in Christ Jesus.

Who is Wise Among Us by Loretta Eidson

When I attended my first writer’s conference back in 2010, I knew nothing about the craft. It didn’t take long for me to realize I had much to learn. I was ignorant of writing and publishing terminology. As I mingled through the crowd, I remained in the background, feeling out of place. With pen in hand, I jotted down the unfamiliar terms they mentioned to look them up and figure out what they meant—terms like synopsis, proposal, point of view, transitional sentences, etc.

They excitedly chatted about agents, editors, and one-on-one appointments, unaware of my fear that they’d see how mortified I had become. I rushed back to my room, grabbed my laptop, and searched and prayed. After a while, I’d gained some insight and felt a little smarter.

What does it mean to be smart? Intelligent, clever, or quick-witted, maybe educated. Conversations come easy when the discussion is one in which you can relate to and allows you to engage with others confidently. Sometimes, you may know more about the topic than anyone else in the room, but don’t let it go to your head.

Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord and shun evil. Prov 3:7 (NIV)

How do you determine someone’s intelligence? Is it gained by graduating from high school or college? Securing a master’s degree or doctorate? Maybe so, to various degrees, but some have never finished grade school yet are very successful. Educated intelligence is one thing, but genuine intelligence contains godly wisdom.

Since I don’t have a degree of any kind, I’ve never considered myself to have educated intelligence. However, after surrendering to the Lord as a teen, reading my Bible through the years, praying consistently, and seeking His wisdom daily, I’ve found peace knowing I don’t have to measure up to anyone else. I’m just me, and I’m no better than the next person.

Even though I’ve taken a few college courses, studied four years of writing classes with Jerry B. Jenkins, became an AWSA (Advanced Writers and Speakers Association) certified coach, took Human Resource Management classes, and studied medical terminology, I still don’t have the credentials to boast or to think I’m smarter or wiser than anyone else. God is the only all-knowing, ever-present Wise One.

Do not think more highly of yourself than you ought. Romans 12:3 (NIV)

Let’s strive to remain humble in all things and never place ourselves on a pedestal. Be aware that arrogance is the devil’s playground, and we never want to give him a foothold.

May we fix our eyes on Christ, who IS the wisest of all, and learn by His example.

Blessings,

Loretta

Welcome to Living Life According to Proverbs

Have you ever wondered how we are supposed to navigate this thing called life? How do we make wise decisions, understand our fellow man, and be people of integrity? The answer is simple yet requires a focused commitment: surrender to Christ and follow Him.

The world has a lot to offer. Some are good, some are not so good, and our choices determine our outcome. The Bible is our go-to source and trusted GPS to guide us into all truth.

The book of Proverbs contains many truths about how we can live a godly life, stay focused, gain wisdom from God, and so much more. These golden nuggets offer direction and instructions on living in the power of the Spirit if we are obedient to His Word.

Let the wise listen and add to their learning, and let the discerning get guidance.

Proverbs 1:5 (NIV)

Over the past month, my daily devotions have been from this book in the Bible. Each morning, as I read in Proverbs, I longed to share some of these insights with you, my readers, hoping to enlighten your understanding of specific verses further. There are too many truths to point out in this blog series, but I hope to touch on a few.

To help bring the scripture into focus, I’ve invited my AWSA (Advanced Writers and Speakers Association) friends to share with you, discussing a proverb of their choice. Remember, God speaks to each person differently in different situations. Pray as you follow along and ask God what He wants you to learn from each post.

May you find helpful tips and insight into personal experiences and life applications during this series. Many of my friends have inspirational books available, too. Each will share with you on their appointed day.

Look for these posts every Monday morning for the next three months. Share your thoughts in the comments and engage in conversation with the authors.

I pray that you will receive encouragement and find answers to your prayers during this series.

Blessings,

Loretta

A Cameo for a Cowgirl by Carolyn Miller — Welcome to Three Creek Ranch, home of the James family for over a hundred years, complete with its own Western movie set. Franklin James might be a famous pro hockey player, but just because he’s Cassie’s older brother doesn’t mean she wants to step into the limelight. She’s too busy helping her dad run the ranch and managing the ranch’s movie set, and negotiating with the giant egos of movie stars like Harrison Woods, who’s supposed to be filming the new TV series of As The Heart Draws. And while his TV hero character might be hugely popular, Harrison’s real character is anything but noble. Cassie is convinced he’s hiding something, and she’s determined to make sure it doesn’t reflect badly on Three Creek Ranch. Can she remind him what being a true hero is all about? (Contemporary Romance, Independently Published [ACFW QIP])

The Farmer Takes a Wife by Candice Sue Patterson — Librarian Gemma Breckenridge hates the spotlight. She’s content in her small town, living alone with books for company and caring for her once famous sister, Cammie, who’s now suffering from a degenerative brain disease. But Cammie’s care is expensive, and when the grant Gemma was counting on is denied, she’s forced to take desperate measures and applies to be a contestant on a reality television show where a wealthy farmer is looking for a love connection. What better place to keep her sister’s identity incognito than a thousand-acre farm in the middle of nowhere, South Dakota? Colby Graham will do anything to save his almost bankrupt farm, even if it means that all of primetime will think he’s incapable of finding a wife on his own. The sponsorships alone should carry his business out of the red, and royalties from the producer will help to keep it there. But choosing a bride from among eight gorgeous strangers is tougher than Colby bargained for. Especially when the one woman he wants isn’t a contestant. With a cast of vivid characters, join the crew in this witty romance filled with drama, heartache, elimination challenges, and fancy luggage full of secrets. Amid the beautiful setting of the Midwest, this tale unravels the tightly bound threads of sacrificial love. (Contemporary Romance, Independently Published [ACFW QIP])

But letting Logan and his dogs into their lives makes the past almost impossible to leave behind…especially when it opens the door to love. (Contemporary Romance from Love Inspired [Harlequin])

Love Overboard by Shannon Sue Dunlap — A snort-laughing, cruise ship romance takes readers into topsy-turvy waters. When a group of four quirky friends retire on a never-ending round of cruises, their attire consists of more than floral shirts and gaudy skirts. Armed with walkie-talkies and battle plans, these relationship experts–who’ve dubbed themselves the “Shippers”–target hostess Lacey Anderson and director Jonathan King in their romantic schemes. But the young couple refuses to cooperate. They’ve been on the “love boat” together before, and it went down in flames. Boss matchmaker Emily Windsor has orchestrated multiple romantic successes, and these two upstarts certainly won’t get the best of her. The chemistry between Lacey and Jonathan is obvious, but the couple rebuffs every outlandish plot and “coincidental” meeting, forcing the matchmakers to chart a new course to true love–all while inadvertently thwarting drug smugglers threatening to ruin their floating home on the ocean. This laugh-out-loud rom-com features loveable characters, over-the-top situations reminiscent of 1950s sitcoms, and a dash of mystery. The toe-curling romance will push the reader overboard and all in with Shannon Dunlap’s new series. (Romance from Kregel Publications)
