Take tea with the Victorian Mafia – organized crime has never been so civilized

Revenge is a dish best served cold. At the Lamb residence, it is also served on fine bone china.

The untimely demise of Thaddeus Lamb leaves his son Riley in charge of the vast Lamb empire, which imports tea, picks pockets, extorts, and keeps men warm on cold winter's nights. And so the Lambs grieve for their father in the best way they know how… Retribution.

Hired by the new head of the Fox Family, a position recently vacated by another untimely demise, the assassin O'Murtagh is tasked with the utter destruction of all the Lamb Family's business associates. They learn the hard way that there is no better hit man than a beautiful woman with tricks and weapons up her finely coiffed sleeves.

Treachery and deceit abound in the streets of London, and no one is safe. Honestly, it's enough to make anyone drink. Would you care for one lump or two?

Excerpt

Snip. The jewelled secateurs caught the soft light thrown by the candles. Snip. Dark orange on green. Snip. Tiny white blossoms fell to the stone floor. Snip, snip.

Carmine Fox took an orange in her gloved hand and turned it over, this way and that, examining the pitted skin and running a finger along the bumps and grooves in the fruit.

In an alcove, the huge Brass Lady statue gleamed, her beautiful features painted buttery gold, eyes looking blindly at nothing at all.

Carmine's dress swept the floor, not a mourning dress as you might expect, having lost her father, but rather dove grey and lavender picked out with black trim along the panel, cuffs, hem, and bustle. Her hair, long and coiled, was the color of Grip's wings, as were her eyes. The muted tones of her dress made her sallow, or maybe it was just the lack of light.

Years of water and living things within the man-made lake had given the huge cathedral style glass ceiling and everything beneath a greenish hue and made the walls bleed rust.

She looked up from her study of the orange and threw it across the room, faster than the eye could see.

The woman standing in the shadows caught the orange, her arm shooting up to stop the fruit, as it nestled in her palm.

"Oh, brava."

O'Murtagh stood silently before Carmine Fox who walked toward her, the secateurs dangling lazily from her hand.

"Quiet little thing, aren't you?"

Fox peered at her intently, taking in the pale face and brown eyes framed with a veil of auburn hair.

"Well, quiet suits my needs. Feel free to eat the orange, which will be sweet and ripe. Ah, but how could such a thing grow here you wonder?" She paused. "It didn't, of course, there is a vast orangery in the house, but I like to be here to prune, the setting eases my mind."

O'Murtagh made no move to peel the fruit; instead she put it in one of the many pockets of her skirts.

Carmine Fox shrugged. "No matter. When you come to eat the orange, you will find it as I say. But now, we have other matters to discuss."

She walked back to the table where the plants stood and put the secateurs down.

"You have come highly recommended." Her heel tapped on the black and white tiled floor. "I have been told of your merits, misdeeds, and probably know more about you than your own mother, whom I believe has been dead a long time. But that doesn't interest me, your skills do."

O'Murtagh nodded imperceptibly.

"This is not a pretty tale, but then I suppose these things never are." Fox sighed and smiled, pacing the room, warming to her tale and the task ahead.

"Tell me, O'Murtagh. Do you believe in an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth?" Fox waved her hand airily. "We are not here to talk about the philosophy of doddery old men falling asleep and drooling into their beards. I mean vengeance, retribution. Honor, even if it is only the kind to be found among thieves."

Fox stopped pacing, abruptly, and O'Murtagh could feel the heightened tension in the room under the still water.

"There is no need for you to know everything, but know this," Carmine resumed talking and walking, "I am not sorry that my father is dead. Vile man. He made my mother's life a misery. Drove her to her death. I had this statue of her made. You know, I talk to her as I prune." She gazed fondly at the Brass Lady.

"But he didn't do this alone. No. Rather he was fuelled by his once great friend turned great enemy. Interesting that they should have died in the same week, is it not? Thaddeus Lamb and my father climbed the tree to the gold at the top, from ragged boys to prosperous men, branch by branch to the prize at the end. Suffice to say there was a falling out and my father the Fox did everything in his power to bring the traitor Lamb down."

Carmine went to the Brass Lady, and standing on tiptoe, ran her hand down the statue's cold cheek.

"My mother would have hated to see this. Hated to see what he made me. But my father not only left me his riches, he left me his hatred. After my mother died, all I heard of was how he was going to get his revenge. Now that he is no longer here, it is up to me to see this thing through. You do understand, don't you?"

"I do."

O'Murtagh's voice was so quiet that Carmine Fox wasn't sure she had heard her in the first place.

"I suppose you do, why would you be in your line of work otherwise?"

The assassin kept her brown gaze on the woman who had hired her, but held her tongue.

"Very well. Your job then, is to take the family down. Not directly, but by hitting them where they will hurt the most. Trade routes, business associates, and so on. My father left a diary full of any information you should need. I shall release the names of four people to you when the time is right. None of this shall be traced back to me, and if you should fail, I will make your life one long misery."

"I have no doubt."

"Good. So," Carmine Fox rubbed her hands together, almost gleefully, "Thaddeus Lamb, the Head of the Family is out of our way. I have been told that other factions are gathering like vultures over the rotting corpse of what remains and that the Lambs–when they are able to act–will find other matters to occupy their time. Such as a nasty little turf war. At which point we shall have progressed to a point where we will be able to muzzle them entirely."

She laughed, and O'Murtagh, seasoned as she was, felt the small hairs on her arms raise and her skin became as pitted as that of the orange in her pocket.

Fox pirouetted, her skirts spreading out and then settling.

"None of it shall ever be traced back to me," she delighted in her glee, before quietening. "Then I can get straight to the heart of things."

O'Murtagh's place was not to ask. She was being paid handsomely and had more time than she cared for to do these jobs. Nor was she squeamish, her body-count was impressive. Though she stopped short at children, babies, and pregnant women.

"Now, my dear." Fox clapped her hands together. "Time for tea. Would you care to accompany me back to the house?"

How do you like your hero? #Hot? #Sexy? #Alpha? How about with a #giveaway?

Alpha Male Madness Bloghop Picture I have always found commanding men fascinating, especially if they soften around the edges when they are with the women they love. That is why the heroes of my paranormal stories are powerfully built warriors, whose duty is second only to their love for their mates.

My story, Alpha Mine , focuses on a seductive, commanding male named Stephan and his one true love. The story follows their struggle to develop their relationship, while evil ones are hot on their heels bringing death and destruction.

Here is a little more about the story:

                                                           Book Blurb:
In the shadows of the night, there exists a band of warriors--a group of vampires, known as the Alpha Council.  Their formidable leader, Stephan von Haas, has vowed to protect not only his kind, but the humans existing alongside them. His duty comes before all else--until a sassy blonde saunters into his life.

When a sensual, dark-haired stranger walks into Katrina Spencer's life, he stirs her deepest desires and sweeps her into a world beyond her wildest dreams. But when Katrina is targeted by Stephan’s enemies, reality shifts into something violent and deadly, as she is thrust into a realm where vampires stalk the shadows and vengeance is coming for her.

Together they will confront an extraordinary destiny of peril, passion, and dark pleasures. But when one horrid mistake brings retribution, their love may pay the price.

                                                                       Book Excerpt:
“So tell me, young one, is Kat short for something or did your parents just have a fascination with felines?”

“It’s short for Katrina. But everyone calls me Kat.” She began to gather the playing cards from the table, but Stephan stilled her shaking hands by covering them with his own. Something akin to an electric  current passed between them. Katrina gazed at Stephan, drinking him in, dangerous, magnificent, and so very beautiful.

“Where are my manners?” she asked, her voice quivering. “Would you like a drink?”

“You read my mind,” he replied as he rose, pulling her toward him. “I am a little parched, actually.”

Their eyes locked and Kat once again fell into his dark gaze. Her mind detached, as if she watched herself from above. The feel of his mouth registered on her lips, while the smell of sandalwood engulfed her. His lips feathered kisses down her jaw, coming to a rest where her shoulder met her throat. She swooned. His arms closed around her like a set of steel bands, pulling her up against his firm body. Kat moaned when his tongue flicked out to taste her sensitive skin. He inhaled deeply against her neck causing goose bumps to pimple her flesh.

“Honeysuckle,” he murmured, his lips brushing against her flesh. His fangs lengthened, scraping the skin where her pulse beat, sending her heart racing. He cupped her bottom in one hand and tightened his arm around her waist. Her body stiffened only a little as he pulled her tighter against him, lifting her off her feet.

Excerpt:

Her reflection wavered in the water, the ribbon cutting a line in the wavering picture of herself once more. Her mouth frowned down at the face in the water. The watery reflection frowned back. She grinned and the face in the water grinned back too. Laughing now, she pushed the tip of her nose up with her finger and the girl in the water did as well.

Behind the reflection something moved, and she blinked hard. Bubbles rose, breaking the surface with gentle burbles, carrying what sounded like a tinkling laugh with them. A shimmer of scales darted under the boat and she leaned further out in surprise. That fish was big, she thought and waggled her ribbon enticingly. Then a face, pale and smiling peered up at her, black hair fanning out in the water, blue eyes crinkling in the corner with delight. The face suddenly crossed its eyes and poked out a pink tongue and Ava reared back in surprise, dropping her ribbon in shock.

The momentum carried her in a jerky marionette step across the boat, and then her legs caught the side of the boat, and in what seemed like slow motion, her arms wind-milling, she went backwards over the side.

She heard her father shout out, and then water filled her ears, cold and deafening. Salty fluid filled her mouth and nose and she breathed involuntary as she shrieked in fright. Within seconds, her jacket had righted her in the water, but she struggled to draw a breath. Vomiting a copious mouth of nauseating warm salty water, she coughed hard enough to bring tears to her eyes, and then the tears began in earnest. Legs and arms heavy with fright, she bobbed in the water like a cork, panting with the urgency to get her breath back.

Interested in learning more about Alpha Mine? How about a sneak peek from the book?
Kat gazed at the man. His menacing, large frame filled the entryway to the kitchen. Hard sapphire eyes stared at them. His shoulder length hair, the color of dark chocolate, was tied back exposing the hard line of his jaw and perfectly chiseled features of his face with its scruffy five o’clock shadow. The black sweater he wore tucked into leather pants that were settled low on his hips, hugged his sculpted chest. A pair of shitkicker boots and a leather jacket finished his ensemble. The look on his face said he could kill you as easily as he could say hello, and Kat wondered just which of the two he would do to them.

I hope you feel properly teased. :) If you would like to read more about Kat and her hunky vampire hero, please visit a buy link below to pick up a copy of Alpha Mine. It is on SALE for $.99 for a few more days, so don't miss out. Grab a copy soon.

Excerpt:

She heard the sound of running feet coming towards her. More trouble, Cassidy thought. If they had reinforcements, she was definitely dead.

The one with the martial arts training was fumbling in his pocket. Frightened he had a gun, Cassidy knew she had no more time for trickery and deception. She went in fast and close and took him in the solar plexus with a swift eagle strike. As he slumped, his hand came up with a knife.

The sight of it produced a surge of fear that provided an extra spurt of strength and determination. Cassidy moved in close and banged her hands over his ears, bursting his eardrums while she kneed him in the balls. He folded like a sack, retching with a high squealing sound.

“Are you all right?” With surprise Cassidy saw it was Dmitri. He moved lightly, stepping over the unconscious man at his feet. Cassidy hadn’t seen him go down. It must have been fast. As her first victim stirred and tried to sit up, Dmitri gave him a casual kick in the ribs. “Stay down,” he ordered. It was a hard voice, used to command. The man slumped instinctively.

Police, Cassidy thought. He must be plainclothes division.

Looking around he smiled at her. “That was great,” he said. “Karate with a bit of Muay Thai improv. Or was it taekwondo? Either way, love it!”

“Thanks,” Cassidy said warily. Having done routine paperwork like converting her drivers’ license and getting her residence card, her experience was that the Moscow police always had their hand out. She wondered how much this would cost her.

Dmitri saw with interest that his redhead was completely unmoved both by the attack or his appearance. She was breathing a little fast but otherwise she looked cool and composed; as if it was completely normal to stand about talking while three muggers were heaving their guts up all over the street. She really was something. He grinned companionably at her. “Let’s get this scum cleared away, huh?”

He put his fingers in his mouth and whistled. Instantly there was an answering call.

Shit, Cassidy thought. She didn’t want to be mixed up with official reports even though clearly the handover was off.

Dmitri saw her wariness and thought she might not remember him. Men were probably trying to get her attention all the time. “Remember me? I’m Dmitri. We met earlier. Can I buy you a drink?”

Cassidy stared at him. “What?”

“A drink. I really wanted to ask you to dance but after this you must be thirsty, so drinks first and a dance later?”

He was drunk, Cassidy decided. No sober man would ask her for a drink while stepping around three semiconscious, retching, groaning men. Dmitri looked sober but he must be plastered. Cassidy stifled a groan. A clandestine meet that had been a complete fuckup and now a tanked up copper looking for a date. Terrific. This just couldn’t get worse.
