Early Lit Bits: Book Review — “Andrew Drew and Drew”

Andrew Drew and Drew by Barney Saltzberg

“Andrew was a doodle boy.” In this engaging story, Andrew’s pencil and imagination run wild while creating a kite, a dinosaur and many other unique creatures. This book is a delight, with flaps to lift and unfold on each page.

As you read with your child, try to guess what Andrew’s drawing will be before the flap is lifted. Create your own drawings in Andrew’s style, starting with just a line. Try drawing a picture together, with your child beginning on one side of the page with a line, and you finishing the drawing on the other side. This book encourages conversational skills between you and your child, and also models a passion for creativity that you can extend long after the book is finished. Talking and doodling are both important skills to practice because they get your child ready to read!

Celebrate a Classic: Laura Ingalls Wilder

Little House on the PrariePlan a book club or get-together in honor of a classic author!  February 7 was the birth date of Laura Ingalls Wilder (she was born in 1867).  Reread Little House on the Prairie, and then swap frontier stories as you munch on a tasty tidbit from the Little House Cookbook (Fried Parsnips and Succotash anyone?).  To add some hilarity to the event—and for an updated take on an old classic—read The Wilder Life: My Adventures in the Lost World of Little House on the PrairieJust try to hold back your laughter as you experience author Wendy McClure’s offbeat quest to rediscover the wonder of the novels by visiting the locations immortalized in the classic series.

“As you read my stories of long ago I hope you will remember that the things that are truly worthwhile and that will give you happiness are the same now as they were then. Courage and kindness, loyalty, truth, and helpfulness are always the same and always needed.”  ― Laura Ingalls Wilder

eBook Site Tips — Selecting Checkout Periods

As you may have noticed, OverDrive has updated our eBook website (http://ebooks.kdl.org) to a whole new look! Since there are a number of changes, we’ve been highlighting some tips for navigating the new site here on the KDL blog. Here’s our topic today:

It doesn’t ask me to select a checkout period anymore — how do I change this?

In order to simplify the checkout process and reduce the required number of clicks, OverDrive now automatically selects the checkout period that is set in your individual account. You can set your default lending period to 7, 14, or 21 days  by logging into your account and clicking on Settings:

Lending Period

Note that based on user feedback of the new site, OverDrive does plan on adding back the option to choose your checkout period for each individual title at the time of checkout. We should see this option again within the next few weeks.

Learn more about the eBook website changes by reading the FAQ page, which also includes a helpful demo video.

Questions? Give us a call at 616-784-2007 or fill out the Support Request Form.

Happy Downloading!
