Marsha Katz on Disability Policy Part II: The Extra Expense of Disability
I’ve posted this before, and I just linked to it, but I wanted to post it again.
I get so tired of explaining to abled people just how much more I have to spend on basic needs. Yeah, I get free parking at meters. But I’m very limited in what cars I can drive, which apartments I can live in, and what kind of furniture I can use. Having fewer choices often means I have to pay more, especially because things that are necessities for me (a dishwasher; a washer and dryer; sturdy, well-made furniture) are high-priced luxuries for most. I don’t have a PCA, but I have to pay people to do a lot of physical tasks for me—packing and moving, delivering and assembling furniture, changing my tire if I get a flat. Not to mention my healthcare costs, including mobility devices, which are extraordinarily high, despite having fairly decent (and expensive) insurance.
I’m not exceptional. Many of us disabled folks spend so much of our (often meager) incomes on basic life necessities.
The video and above commentary is absolutely true. Being disabled and/or chronically ill is damn expensive.
There are actually four parts to this series, I recommend them if you’re interested.
I am 100% serious when I say that getting diagnosed with a chronic or disabling condition is also a diagnosis of poverty.
Disability=poor. Sick=poor. Self-care=expensive. Healthcare=outrageous.
