Working Wednesday #11

Okay… This week I worked on more than just I Loved You First. Not much, but a little. :) If you don't mind, I'll skip my failures again, and just hit the good stuff. So let's see where we are.

Edit I Loved You First

Four scenes a week

Last update 29/32
Done!!!! Final word count on this draft is 40,234 words with 32 scenes.

Clean up blog and update link

This week, I worked on the review (2010/2011) and reading lists. Really all I did was use the Goodreads Widgets. :) I figured that way they'll update themselves. No mess.

2011 Reading Challenge ~ Apparently I lost my lead, and now I'm right on track. This week I'm reading The Archangel by Michael Young. I'm so loving it.

In Other News!!!

Tomorrow's my birthday! If you were around for my last birthday, you know I'm the type of gal to ask my family for the presents I want.

Welcome to the family. I'm putting out my wishlist, which is simple. I want your pledges! $1, $5, $10, $1,000,000,000,000–I don't care. Okay, if you pledge $1,000,000,000,000, I will care.

Seriously though. Every little bit helps. If you're not familiar with the Kickstarter Campaign program, I'll let you in on a secret. It's all or nothing. I'm about 25% toward my goal of $800. If I received $799.99 worth of pledges, everything falls through, no funds arrive toward my editing fund.

So I humbly request with virtual cherries on top (unless you're allergic to cherries), read the first chapter of I Loved You First, check out my Kickstarter Campaign, pick through the rewards, and if you're so obliged, please pledge.

My best friend was more than just a best friend to me. Three words summed it up: I heart him. I'd never tell him though. I wasn't stupid. Besides, what he'd told no one, but me, was a little something I wished I could forget… or ignore. He was gay. I guess gay wouldn't be bad if I wasn't so in love with him. Now it was just cruel.

Stereotypes run amok in this college love story: Parties, alcohol, hookups, and breakups. Alexandria Carmichael may find it a bit much as she deals with the unreturned love from the boy who completes her. When all is revealed, not only does she risk losing her best friend forever, but also herself. Without her childhood companion for support, Alexandria takes a journey of self-discovery but fears what she'll find at the end.

Add it to your Goodreads list. :)

Also, check back tomorrow for the giveaway I've planned for my birthday. :D

Novel Review: Halfway to the Grave by Jeaniene Frost

***Here's something odd. I was going through my posts and noticed this as a draft. Apparently, I never posted it. Oops. Guess that's good in a way, cause I haven't read a book for this week's Monday review. Guess what you get. :) ***

I've been sitting on Halfway to the Grave by Jeaniene Frost for awhile–since July 2010. I started reading it, then a book by one of my favorite authors arrived, and I set it aside. It's so difficult for me to pick up a book once I set it aside. Not sure why, but I finally decided to try this one again. Before I get into the second chance I gave this book, how about the blurb from Ms. Frost's website:

Flirting With The Grave…

Half-vampire Catherine Crawfield is going after the undead with a vengeance, hoping that one of these deadbeats is her father – the one responsible for ruining her mother's life. Then she's captured by Bones, a vampire bounty hunter, and is forced into an unlikely partnership.

In exchange for help finding her father, Cat agrees to train with the sexy night stalker until her battle reflexes are as sharp as his fangs. She's amazed she doesn't end up as his dinner – are there actually good vampires? Pretty soon Bones will have her convinced that being half-dead doesn't have to be all bad. But before she can enjoy her status as kick-ass demon hunter, Cat and Bones are pursued by a group of killers. Now Cat will have to choose a side … and Bones is turning out to be as tempting as any man with a heartbeat.

Cat played a strong, though immature heroine. Given her age of 22, I think it was fitting. Then there was Bones, the older mentor. The contrast between the two was wonderful and believable.

One of the first things I noticed about Halfway to the Grave is pretty much all the information was heavily front loaded. Cat came into the situation virtually clueless about the life of vampires, while Bones knew all. :)

My husband introduced me to a term a while back called the Audience Surrogate. Though Cat was the main character, she played that role, asking all the needed questions to fill in the back story. I wasn't fond of the style as it seemed like an easy way out and a bit telly rather than showy, but at the same time it was nice not to be clueless about the rules of the game.

The novel started a bit slow for my liking. It's about 350 pages or so, but it wasn't until about 150 pages into the story I actually got an inkling of the plot. Prior to that, Cat just lived her life with Bones, knocking out small task after small task. In the end, Bones' quest set the real stakes to the story.

This is one of those books I'm having a horrible time rating. Here's the thing. The first third of the book was rather bleh and full of information rather than story. The second third introduced the plot (Bones' quest). It was interesting but not spectacular (so-so). Then I hit the last third of the book and was blown away. The stakes were high and full of thrill. :) I'm going to give her next book a chance just because of the ending. If One Foot in the Grave is as good as the end of Halfway to the Grave, I can definitely see myself becoming a fan of Jeaniene Frost.

Sunday Showcase #9

I only have one book to share this week, and it was more of a fluke than anything. Ya'll remember way back when to the last giveaway here? No? Honestly, I have no idea why I had the last giveaway either. Maybe it was a just because giveaway. Anyway, one of the winners didn't receive her book. Surprise! I received it instead. Not sure what happened, but an address mix-up occurred. I contacted the Book Depository, and they agreed to send a new copy to the winner. What should I do with this copy, I asked. Keep it, they said. And voila! I'm one book richer. Thanks, TBD! So… what book have I received?

When Brittany Ellis walks into chemistry class on the first day of senior year, she has no clue that her carefully created "perfect" life is about to unravel before her eyes. She's forced to be lab partners with Alex Fuentes, a gang member from the other side of town, and he is about to threaten everything she's worked so hard for—her flawless reputation, her relationship with her boyfriend, and the secret that her home life is anything but perfect.

Alex is a bad boy and he knows it. So when he makes a bet with his friends to lure Brittany into his life, he thinks nothing of it. But soon Alex realizes Brittany is a real person with real problems, and suddenly the bet he made in arrogance turns into something much more.

In a passionate story about looking beneath the surface, Simone Elkeles breaks through the stereotypes and barriers that threaten to keep Brittany and Alex apart.

Why I Picked It up: See above. I read the blurb though, and I'm intrigued. Lucky me. :)

Who Art Thou Thursday: Elizabeth Kolodziej

You all might recall me mentioning Elizabeth Kolodziej sending her latest release, Werewolf Descent on tour. Tada! You've found her next stop. :) Kick back and relax as we pry into the mind of Ms. Kolodziej.

Tell us about your most recent publication.

My most recent publication is Werewolf Descent. It is the second book in The Last Witch Series, the first book being Vampyre Kisses. From comments I have gotten from my beta readers and editor, I think this book is really going to show readers how much I have progressed with my writing. The plot and pacing is really terrific and it's going to make the reader keep on reading. Here is the back blurb:

Last witch in the world, Faith Scott, and her Irish vampire boyfriend Trent have just come back from fighting for their lives to recover the Vampiric Blood gem and Werewolf Moon gem. Thinking they could finally relax and work on the romance growing between them, they now meet a mysterious psychic vampire named Vincent who has his heart set on being with Faith.

Soon bizarre killings of Zou Tai's werewolf pack begin, with rumors of an alchemist possessing the famed philosophers stone being the assailant; which, causes Faith to turn to Vincent for help in figuring out why the werewolves are being murdered.

It isn't long before all those around them test Trent and Faith's love, along with their abilities, once again. It is all Trent can do to keep Faith safe by his side while both go up against a deadly alchemist, deceptive gods, and having to rescue the werewolf prince; yet, after a deal with the God of Werewolves will Trent be able to save himself too?

Give us a brief description of a story you have hidden in your skeleton closet? And will it ever see the light of day?

Ok. This is going to be a little vague cause I don't want to give away the ending since I really hope for it to see the light of day. Woman falls for Slayer who is a "hitman" killing the undead. But she doesn't realize this. She is torn between him and the body guard she forced to have follow her around.

Let's just say… things aren't going to be as they seem in this tale. muwhahaha.

What are you working on now?

I am working on the third book, Witch Devotions, for The Last Witch Series while trying to pull my publishing company together. I plan to offer services to other authors while publishing books. We'll see how it goes.

How much of you/your life do you put into your stories?

It truly depends on the story. But I would say at least 20% for every tale in some way or another. For my third book in The Last Witch Series, I am putting around 50% of myself in there because something happened to Faith and me at the same time I started writing it, so I am really feeling what she is going through.

Which of your characters do you relate to most?

Hmmm. I would have to go with Faith. She felt weak but is proving how strong she along with her discipline to learn something she never knew she had in her.

For you, what's the hardest part of the writing process?

Finding the time! I have so many ideas that I want to pour out but when you have to do the business end of being an author plus you have a full time job, well it gets rough. Especially when you want to have a social life to go along with it! ugh.

What's the easiest part of the writing process?

Coming with the stories. I have a great imagination and my characters love talking to me so I know I have at least 3 more books in the least for this series.

When did you first decide you wanted to be a writer?

Truthfully, now that I think about it, I don't think I decided to be a writer. I think it's something that the muses picked special for me and I don't like to waste talent.

Who would you say is your biggest fan in your writing career?

That was my father. He was my biggest supporter and truly believed I have a good thing going. He was smart and gave me the best advice, kinda like a dadager. hehe. Even though he left this world a month ago I still believe his is my biggest fan and always will be.

Do you have any advice for other writers?

Take control. You are the boss of your own empire and if you want to make your dreams come true your going to have to use your wits and your voice.

Anything special you'd like to say to readers?

I appreciate everyone single one of you that reads my books. I am shocked and amazed by the amount (though small) that have Vampyre Kisses thus far. You make me as happy as I hope I make you with my books.

How about some quickies!

Pencil or Pen: Pen

Print or Cursive: Cursive

Pantser or Plotter: Plotter

Favorite Candy: Resse cups

Worst habit: smoking

Working Wednesday #10

The progress I've made this week is pretty concentrated on one work (I Loved You First). So I'm going to skip talking about the other goals. :) Why dwell on failures, right? haha

Edit I Loved You First

Four scenes a week

Last update 27/32 scenes
Currently at 29/32 scenes. Not quite the 4 scenes, but at least we're making progress, right? Hopefully one more update, and we'll be done with the polish portion. I still need to go back and make sure I'm not infringing on any copyright laws. I've contacted the artists of the songs but haven't receive permissions from everyone. To counter that, I plan on writing alternative versions for the sections in questions. But that's for the future.

Kickstarter Campaign – I Loved You First

This week I'm starting a new goal. Like I need more goals considering how well I keep up with the ones I do have. As some of you are aware, I've started a Kickstarter Campaign to raise money to hire an editor for I Loved You First. I have a tiny goal of $800. The deadline to meet this goal is July 23. It's an all or nothing type deal, but I'm offering wonderful rewards for backers.

Current progress $100/800

2011 Reading Challenge ~ I'm still on track this week, at least for today. :) My current read is Spellbound by Cara Lynn which I obtained from Netgalley.

Angel Haze has asked me to join her book launch party next month for her debut release, Bloodletter. Starting July 1, I'll be featuring a variety of authors who are participating as well as visiting other blogs. Stay tuned for details.

Until then, check out the Kickstarter Campaign for I Loved You First, pledge, and share the news! Oh! And add I Loved You First to your Goodreads list. :)

Teaser Tuesday: Werewolf Descent by Elizabeth Kolodziej

As promised, Elizabeth Koldziej was gracious enough to offer a teaser for her newest release, Werewolf Descent–a fun and unpredictable read which I quite enjoyed (review here). This is the second book in the series, which I found to read like a stand alone. So don't be afraid to start here. Can't stand starting into the middle of the series? Vampyre Kisses is the first, and would more than happily take up residence in your home. Without further ado, Werewolf Descent.

The Commencement

W

ater trickled down Circe's red abundant locks, hitting the floor with a sound like two marbles when they knock together. The room was silent; for once there was no laughter coming from giggling girls attending to Aphrodite's needs. Circe was in a room overwhelmed with pink roses and red orchids, purple satin sheets hanging from the ceiling, and a heart-shaped bubble bath filled with rose petals waiting for their mistress's return.

The robe hanging on Circe's body clung against her small figure. She stood with both hands grasping the edge of the small two-tier fountain in the corner of the room. The water was a sensual green that smelled of dandelions and lavender. She wet her lips with her tongue, her purple eyes a deeper shade than usual. She slowly, yet casually, lifted her right hand and pointed out her little finger. She let it lightly touch the water before her, making swirls on the water.

The sound of water dripping became louder in the large room held up by pillars, with a gold pattern encircling the top and bottom. The steps from the fountain led back to the door she'd come in from, but that was not the plan. Circe had to look into the water and see her exquisite Faith with her true love, Trent. Looking through this fountain was different from looking through her own due to Aphrodite being the goddess of love. The bond of love that Faith and Trent had could only be shown through this fountain.

She wanted to know if it was strong enough to last the years they would spend together. As she stared down at Faith, her young witch, Circe's ear twitched and her focus was broken. Her head jerked up and she glare at the ever-so-clean white wall before her. Knowing Aphrodite was behind her, she did not want to move. Her body stiffened at the thought of being caught, enraging a daughter of Zeus, someone so close to him.

Circe could not fathom why Aphrodite had not yet spoken. She is behind me, is she not? I can feel her energy pressing me as I stand here.

Behind her, Aphrodite stared at the goddess of witches, curiosity plaguing her mind. She didn't know what type of emotion she should feel. Looking into another god's fountain without their permission and supervision was not allowed. Nor could she fathom why Circe would be interested in her fountain at all.

What exactly is she trying to find out? Aphrodite thought.

"Are you going to turn around and face me? Or do you think by not seeing me I will not see you?" A smirk touched Aphrodite's face.

Circe willed her body to move, and ever so gradually she made herself face the goddess of love. Purple eyes met those of pinkish hue. With long manicured fingers, Aphrodite tousled her thick, long blond hair and began to walk toward her bed only several feet from the fountain.

The king-size bed hung in the air, but it did not have wires attached to keep it there. Luxuriant, soft pillows were adorned with pale gold squares, and lavender sheets lay on the mattress. A fluffy, down-filled blanket lay perfectly over the mattress. Aphrodite grabbed her satin cherry skirt and pulled it out as she sat down. A corset made with the finest fairy silk and whalebone clung to her chest, accentuating her ample breasts.

"Come and sit by me," the goddess commanded of Circe. Aphrodite was the elder of the two and therefore had the authority to make Circe do, as she wanted, up to a point.

Circe moved forward carefully, unsure of what Aphrodite would do to her. She made her way up the steps and, to show respect to the elder goddess, sat by her feet.

Aphrodite's lightly colored eyebrows were completely relaxed, showing no lines at all. Her perfectly symmetrical oval face lowered to meet Circe's eyes. "Now then, what exactly are you doing?" Her voice was whimsical and bright—not a hint of condescension could be heard.

With a look of admiration for the ever understanding Aphrodite, Circe began to explain. "I needed to look through your fountain to see Trent and Faith."

"Is yours broken?" a quick breath of air left her lips, the laughter showing behind her bright eyes.

Circe lowered her head. "No," she replied, tight-lipped.

"Then why would you need to use mine?"

"I needed to see the bond of love between the two of them." She lifted her head up, purple eyes pleading for understanding.

Aphrodite placed a soft hand on Circe 's head and began to play with a lock of damp hair. "Why did you not ask me?"

Circe searched her mind for an answer but could not find a lie that would do. The truth was best when speaking to the goddess of love, who normally understood unless rubbed the wrong way. "I needed to see how difficult it would be to break the two of them apart." Her voice became slightly bitter as she explained her reasoning.

Aphrodite's fingers stopped playing with the strand. She pulled her hand away; nails dug into her palms as she made fists. Her mouth tight and narrow, she asked, "Why would you want to do that?"

Circe saw the other side of Aphrodite beginning to come out, the side filled with fury when a pair of her lovers was threatened by an outside source. Circe quickly got to her feet, all love and admiration for Aphrodite fleeing her body, being replaced with anger and frustration.

"You do not understand what staying with Trent will do to Faith!" Circe raised her voice as her feet stood steady on the top step; she hovered over the other goddess.

Meeting Circe's eyes, Aphrodite flew to her feet. "What in the world are you talking about? Did you not see the bond between them? The love that they have is stronger than even Cupid and Psyche!" Aphrodite crossed her arms over her chest.

Circe harrumphed and turned to walk down the stairs. Aphrodite was right on her flank. When Circe turned it took Aphrodite by surprise, almost causing the two to ram into each other.

"Trent cannot give Faith what the mortal world needs!" Her fiery eyebrows scrunched down and wrinkles lined her forehead.

Slowly, the goddess of love backed up a few steps, a look of disbelief and irritation on her face. "You want to break apart a love like theirs for your own selfish gain?" It was only half a question; the other half was fact.

"It is not for selfish gain." Her voice began to lower, she couldn't stand looking into her eyes, the tiled floor became a good distraction.

A look of understanding washed over Aphrodite's face, causing her anger to subside for the moment. "You are the goddess of witches, without witches in the world there is no purpose for you. You waited a long time for Faith—patiently." Her voice changed and became sterner as she continued, "But wanting to cause a rift between the two so there can be more witches in the world is just absurd and selfish."

"It is not!" Circe's maroon robe swung with her body as she stood up straight, narrowing her eyes at Aphrodite's. An aura of deep purple started to form around Circe's body, as her emotions grew stronger.

"Yes it is!" As her own aura turned a deep red, Aphrodite met Circe's anger with her own.

Circe turned and started to pace the large room; the sound of her feet slapping against the tile was loud in the hush between the two goddesses. Circe stopped for a moment, holding up her palms. "You must understand what pain this will cause Faith for the rest of her life."

Curiosity overcame Aphrodite. "What are you talking about?"

A sigh fell over Circe. "A witch is filled with the urge to procreate. Witches, despite what many may think, are natural-born parents, whether male or female. Every witch that has ever lived has wanted to have children. Faith will go mad if she cannot let her witch line be passed down to a child of her own."

"That is ridiculous." Aphrodite waved her hand and then folded her arms while cocking a hip to the side.

"It is not ridiculous! It is true. You can ask Hecate." Hecate was older than Aphrodite and a well-respected goddess full of knowledge.

Aphrodite pondered this for a moment before responding. "Faith has shown no signs of pain thus far. It should be left up to her."

This conclusion was not what Circe wanted to hear. "That will not work, because she loves Trent so much, she will withstand the pain just to be with him."

"Then let that be her will!"

"I will not let her do that!"

Aphrodite glared deeply into Circe's eyes. "There is nothing you can do about it." A look of triumph replaced the anger on her perfect face.

Circe grinned and squinted her eyes at the goddess of love. "That is what you think." The words calm but malicious.

Aphrodite was surprised. "What do you mean by that?"

Circe began to walk with a swing in her hips. "You will just have to wait and see. We will find out how strong the love between the two of them really is."

"Do not dare test me, Circe!"

Testing a goddess like Aphrodite was never a smart thing to do—especially when her father was king of the gods.

"Faith is my witch. I am allowed to help her and guide her in the right direction if I so chose."

"We are not supposed to meddle with mortal or supernatural beings like this. Your scheme cannot take place without interfering with the fates. They will not like this at all." Circe saw the look of rage absorb Aphrodite's body, the muscles in her neck taut.

She let out a light chuckle and began to walk towards the door. "If their love is as strong as you claim it to be, then why would you bother mentioning this little discussion to anyone? Did you not compare their devotion for each other to your own son Cupid and his love Psyche?"

"Yes, but they did not have a wicked witch from the heavens hailing down on them." The comment struck Circe, making her stop before pulling the door open.

She stared at the handle on the door. "I care for my kind. I will do what it takes to make sure Faith is happy."

"And to make sure Faith has a child."

"Yes."

Novel Review: Werewolf Descent by Elizabeth Kolodziej

I meant to have the Werewolf Descent review posted yesterday as part of Elizabeth Koldziej's blog tour. Unfortunately, life happened I didn't get around to finishing the read until after midnight. A day late, a dollar short. My apologies to Ms. Kolodziej for dropping the bomb and my readership waiting for my Monday review. Just a heads up. I'm horribly behind on my reading, editing, writing, and just life in general. So I can't guarantee a review next Monday. Until then, how about the blurb for Werewolf Descent:

First off, this is the second novel in the Last Witch series. I didn't read the first novel, Vampyre Kisses, so I was a little fearful I might become lost in Werewolf Descent. I'm happy to report, that was not the case. In my mind, Werewolf Descent could stand alone as a novel. Yes, it did reference plots from Vampyre Kisses, but in a way I didn't feel as if I were missing out.

The story was told from three points of views (POV): Faith, Trent, and Zou Tai. Though I'm not sure why Zou Tai had his own POV, I'm not complaining. I rather enjoyed his character and hope to read a novel where he's the central character with a love interest of his own. There was a little bit of foreshadowing in this work, so I'm really looking forward to finding out more about his story.

Then we have Faith and Trent, our two love birds. :) Their relationship is already established by the time we enter Werewolf Descent. However, with the constant bombardment of males trying to get a little Faith action, this work had an Urban Fantasy feel to it. I'm not sure what genre Vampyre Kisses is, but Werewolf Descent is definitely NOT a Paranormal Romance (PR)… just a warning to you PR lovers.

Now I'm a bit new to the Urban Fantasy world. However, I have to say I quite enjoyed the story line for Werewolf Descent. I was never quite sure if Faith would succumb to one of the male advances, while also wondering which guy Trent would kill first. With all the territory marking, I'm surprised Faith didn't come out pee splattered. Let's just say, there was a heavy flow of testosterone in this novel. Add that to unexpected turns, and I was into for a pretty wild ride. More than once, I had the thought, I didn't see that coming.

My only complaint, because I can't leave well enough alone, is I think the writing could have been tighter by eliminating the filtering verbs and phrases which were at times a bit distancing. All in all, it was a pretty good read, and I can't wait to see what's in store for Faith in 2012.

Stop by around 10am for a Tuesday Teaser. Werewolf Descent will be the feature. :) Until then, stop by Ms. Kolodziej's blog and for other stops on her Werewolf Descent blog tour.

Sunday Showcase #8

This week, I paid a visit to the used bookstore. As if I need more books. Usually I'm more selective, but they had a sale going on. Most of their books were buy one get one free. Then I discovered a sci-fi fantasy section with book $0.50 each! I wasn't as bad as my daughter, you picked up a whopping 35 books! No… I was good. I only picked up 4 books. Pathetic as I am, I don't even know why I picked up one of them.

The realms of the Forelands are in turmoil as a result of the machinations of a powerful conspiracy of sorcerers, members of a race called the Qirsi, pale-skinned folk feared by those in power. Though many refuse to acknowledge the possibility of a conspiracy, a handful of Qirsi and nobles realize that the time has come to take action, even at the cost of their loves, their honor, and even their lives.

But the rebels don't know of each other's actions, and the tenuous threads holding the realms together are starting to unravel. With the death of a king, nobles gather to choose a new leader, and deadly power springs from a most unexpected source. As new alliances form, former enemies become unlikely partners.

But who can be trusted in these new alliances, and who will be swayed by love, jealousy, or pride to betray their new allies? For more than the future of the realm is at stake. The future of the entire Forelands is in danger, and a 900-year-old grudge may lead to civil war. Those who wish to prevent it must place their hopes in a reluctant assassin, a few Qirsi and nobles, and the one man who may be able to defeat the leader of the conspiracy…if he can survive long enough to do it.

Why I Picked It up: Okay. I actually put this back at one time because it was second in the series. Not sure what happened, but it ended up in my home. I guess this one really wanted to come home with me. Since I don't have the first in the series, I doubt I'll read it. This just happens to be a mishap. However, I will say, I love the title and cover. That's what's drew my attention in the first place. Oh well.

First there was Kwani, the blue-eyed "witch," whose turbulent, triumphant life was first chronicled in the New York Times best-seller She Who Remembers and continued in Voice of the Eagle. Now comes Antelope's story. Antelope is Kwani's beloved daughter, a worthy successor to her mother's magnificent legacy. Antelope's mate is Chomoc, the son of the legendary Kokopelli. When Chomoc's wanderlust leads him away from his tribe to the city of the Hasinai, in what will become the state of Oklahoma, Antelope refuses to be left behind. She breaks the taboos that demand she stay safely at home, and with her blue-eyed baby she prepares to join Chomoc. What she finds at the end of the journey is not grand adventure, but a sophisticated city full of hostile, tattooed strangers. The most menacing presence is the Great Sun, ruler of the city. Determined to rid himself of the threat of Antelope's mystic powers, and compelled by her beauty and the need to possess her, the Great Sun becomes Antelope's greatest enemy. Isolated from her people, and now torn apart from her mate, Antelope must find a way to survive and to keep her baby from human sacrifice.

Why I Picked It up: When I was in my teens, I read She Who Remembers. This is the third in the series, but I hope I won't be too lost by skipping the second book.

In his most ambitious project to date, award-winning author Kim Stanley Robinson utilizes years of research and cutting-edge science in the first of three novels that will chronicle the colonization of Mars.

For eons, sandstorms have swept the barren desolate landscape of the red planet. For centuries, Mars has beckoned to mankind to come and conquer its hostile climate. Now, in the year 2026, a group of one hundred colonists is about to fulfill that destiny.

John Boone, Maya Toitavna, Frank Chalmers, and Arkady Bogdanov lead a mission whose ultimate goal is the terraforming of Mars. For some, Mars will become a passion driving them to daring acts of courage and madness; for others it offers and opportunity to strip the planet of its riches. And for the genetic "alchemists, " Mars presents a chance to create a biomedical miracle, a breakthrough that could change all we know about life…and death.

The colonists place giant satellite mirrors in Martian orbit to reflect light to the planets surface. Black dust sprinkled on the polar caps will capture warmth and melt the ice. And massive tunnels, kilometers in depth, will be drilled into the Martian mantle to create stupendous vents of hot gases. Against this backdrop of epic upheaval, rivalries, loves, and friendships will form and fall to pieces—for there are those who will fight to the death to prevent Mars from ever being changed.

Brilliantly imagined, breathtaking in scope and ingenuity, Red Mars is an epic scientific saga, chronicling the next step in human evolution and creating a world in its entirety. Red Mars shows us a future, with both glory and tarnish, that awes with complexity and inspires with vision.

Why I Picked It up: Some might remember me talking about a book about Mars where the people get infected with some kind of organic goo and bring it back to Earth. Well, I don't think this book is it. However, it keeps showing up in my search when looking for that Mars book. Plus this one is a winner of the Nebula Reward… whatever that means. Yeah… I write, but I am totally not hip on all the reward business.

Grad- school dropout Matt Fuller is toiling as a lowly research assistant at MIT when he inadvertently creates a time machine. With a dead-end job and a girlfriend who left him for another man, Matt has nothing to lose in taking a time-machine trip himself—or so he thinks.

Why I Picked It up: Okay… the title and cover art is rather catchy. But the real kicker was the Nebula label again. If Red Mars has it, maybe that meas this is good too. I get weird like that sometimes.

I believe I'm becoming a used bookstore addict. I stop in once a week, almost like clockwork. Instead of the clerks asking, "Is there anything we can help you find?" They now say, "Hope you find what you're looking for this time."

How's the book shopping going for you all? Has the bookstore become your home away from home?
