Blogging A to Z: The Mortecarni, Plague in England #horror
Today is E for England in the daily A to Z Blog Challenge
I don't know why plague in the Medieval period is so fascinating. Maybe it's the idea of there being something so mysterious and unfathomable like the plague. People of the time didn't know of bacteria, germs, or that pests carried disease. What they didn't know was attributed to witchcraft, or curses from God, and personal failures of faith. In a world ruled by the church, this was a world of superstition and fear, flagellants and eventually, the Inquisition.

Today I welcome author Kelly Evans, who has an interesting take on the plague.
About The Mortecarni
The year is 1348 and the Black Death is ravaging England. For Brother Maurice, a monk and physician, the disease is the most terrifying he’s ever seen. But Maurice soon learns of an even more deadly threat: the exanimate Mortecarni. After his first unexpected encounter with the creatures, Maurice is pulled into a world of savagery and secrecy.
As he travels across the country, investigating both the plague and the Mortecarni, Maurice questions how such unholy suffering is possible. When his own family is struck down, his beliefs falter. Can he regain his faith and save both England and himself?
Favorite Quote:
“If only I could tell this poor girl the truth, that there were real beasts out there and that she was so far removed from these creatures as a butterfly was from a spider.”I like this quote because of the spider imagery, and the idea that there are things out there, creeping around in the dark, that are best left undiscovered.

Blogging A to Z: Dunnhill Series #mystery #occult Fiction
Today is the Letter D for the Dunhill Series.

Welcome to author Lucia Davis, who's sharing an excerpt form her book, The Baby on the Back Porch, the first in the Dunnhill Series.
Ooh, now who doesn't like to read a creepy short story?
About The Baby on the Back Porch :In this novelette, Sara Eriksson leaves San Francisco for a small village in the Northern Cascades, where she rents an old cabin. Hidden in the forests, the cabin has been a silent witness to mysterious events long forgotten. But sometimes the past has a way of resurfacing…
What Inspired It? I’m not sure—the story just knocked on my door and I let it in…
Excerpt:Sara wrinkled her nose and took a purposeful whiff of her coffee. The cabin had not seen frequent use, judging by the musty smell that lingered throughout the house. She opened the window, and along with the fresh air, the sounds of the back yard flooded in. Chirping birds resonantly celebrated the spring. Somewhere in the distance, a creek was softly murmuring. She sighed. This was perfect! As she took it all in, the thought appeared before she even noticed it forming. Dad would have loved to photograph this.A sharp pang gripped her chest. She rubbed her eyes, suddenly feeling drained. She was so tired of grieving. How long before these uninvited thoughts stopped making her so sad? She opened her computer to take her mind off her sorrow; emptying her suitcase would have to wait. Soon she was absorbed in her new project, typing on and off while occasionally pausing to sip her coffee. Oblivious to her surroundings, she failed to notice when the birds abruptly stopped chattering, and everything grew eerily quiet. She was staring off into the distance when out of the corner of her eye, something shifted under the trees. She focused. Yes, there was movement, almost hidden in the shadows—a dark shape, a large shape. She leaned forward to get a better view. Slowly the dark silhouette emerged from the trees and raised itself up. (Read more, see how it continues in Book 2: The Charm of Lost Chances. )

Blogging #AtoZ: Changing Fiction, Lizzie Borden, #zombies #Horror
Today is the Letter C for Changes & Changing in the daily A to Z Blog Challenge
Since it's the first letter of my name, too, figured it was a good time for me o talk about a topic in fiction - changing a story, or given the topic, chopping out stuff, if you will... heh-heh.
Nothing is harder than re-reading, editing, and rewriting, especially a story you wrote a little while before.
I've been going over the text of Lizzie Borden, Zombie Hunter, which will be coming out in a new 2nd edition - with an amazing (horrorific!) new cover.
When you re-read a story, you can't help but think of the good points, but it's also some of the things people didn't like that you think about. Now that doesn't mean you change everything. I made that mistake once - never again. Never listen to someone else tell you how to write your story.
But given that it's two years since I wrote the book, as I reread the story, I did find things to change. There were some clunky sentences, some unnecessary ones, and some things I just didn't like. And certain things will remain the same. You can't please everyone. Not everyone will read things as you do, or even write it the same. I didn't want to change the story as is, only update it.
Ch-ch-ch-changes:
One thing I did change: many people criticized the character, John, whom everyone rightly hates as a cad and a jerk - even if he's Lizzie's sometime love interest. (Oh, you think Lizzie Borden led a chaste life? Maybe... and maybe not. We really don't know though there were rumors about her having a love child. There was a lot of salacious gossip about her during the trial in 1893. The Victorians were not as chaste and sanctimonious as you might think despite outward appearances... I'll save those thoughts for a later blog post. Think of Queen Victoria - who had nine children and was madly in love - infatuated? - with her husband, Prince Albert. Those two weren't sitting around knitting.)
As I read, I realized there was the perfect point where John was being annoying - and she should say something. So she does. It made perfect sense for her to put him in his place. And later, instead of having him just go away, I made sure she told him not to let the door hit him on the way out. Which was rather satisfying, I might add!
The New Cover:
I leaned toward a Victorian-style cover, I really did, but... the book is not sweet. Like the murders, it's gory, not pretty. In real life, this was a horrific event. Warning: Very Graphic - Look up the autopsy reports and the crime scene photos if you never have. Zombies are nasty creatures. So... the cover will be horror and very zombie. But also really cool!! Stay tuned for the reveals, links and more!!

Blogging #AtoZChallenge: Lizzie #Borden
Blogging daily A to Z day 2 - Today's Topic: Lizzie Borden
(Photo: Cover of Leslie's Illustrated Weekly shows Lizzie Borden listening at her trial in 1892)
Given today's letter, I'd be remiss to pass up a chance to talk about infamous axe murderess Lizzie Borden....
Or should I say accused, but acquitted axe murderess...
If you don't know the story, Lizzie, a 32-year-old spinster, reportedly discovered her 70-year-old father, Andrew J. Borden, lying dead on the settee in the sitting room near 11 a.m. on August 4, 1892. He had been struck 10 times with a hatchet or axe. The body of her 64-year-old stepmother, Abby Durfee Borden, was found bent over on her knees by the bed in the upstairs guest bedroom. She had been struck 18 times, according to the autopsy report.
After a three-day inquest, Lizzie was arrested for the murders on August 11, 1892. A grand jury began hearing evidence in November, with Lizzie indicted for the crimes on December 2. The “trial of the century” held from June 5 to June 20, 1893 in the New Bedford Superior Court garnered nationwide media attention and interest worldwide, especially once the verdict came in: Not Guilty. The sensational crime would have been punishable by an equally grisly death—hanging on the gallows.
My take?
About Lizzie Borden, Zombie Hunter:
Every family has its secrets…
One hot August morning in 1892, Lizzie Borden picked up an axe and murdered her father and stepmother. Newspapers claim she did it for the oldest of reasons: family conflicts, jealousy and greed. But what if her parents were already dead? What if Lizzie slaughtered them because they’d become zombies?
Thrust into a horrific world where the walking dead are part of a shocking conspiracy to infect not only Fall River, Massachusetts, but also the world beyond, Lizzie battles to protect her sister, Emma, and her hometown from nightmarish ghouls and the evil forces controlling them.
I'll talk more about the murders and share other excerpts, etc. in the coming days...

Lizzie Borden, #Zombie Hunter 1 & 2 - 1LineWed-1 Line Wednesday #horror
Reading until I can't see straight!
I've finally just finished the second read-through of Lizzie Borden, Zombie Hunter. Another reader is now checking for things I might've missed. After awhile, you can't see!
Two years later, you realize some things hit you differently. Like the character John, whom most people hated. Yes, he's a jerk, a cad. But I realized at one point as I read that there was a perfect place in the story for Lizzie to put him in his place. So she does. And then she does it again. Other things are tightened, some minor lines also changed or deleted.
The real bonus is an amazing new cover is coming!!!! And if you haven't read it, then your chance will be coming soon. Better read it quick, as the sequel will be following right behind!
One more read for the edits of Lizzie Borden, Zombie Hunter 2 - I'm not sharing the subtitle just yet....
* Sign up for my newsletter on my website - (center top column) as I'm starting contests for an exclusive signed arc, ebooks and more! Other prizes to come!
I'll be sharing more soon.
**And it's 1 Line Wednesday! 1LineWed. --- Here's one of my favorite lines (Okay, 2 lines - or 1 from the two main characters!) from book 2:
Pierre: “The mills and factories have doubled, to be sure. Take a good whiff. That’s the smell of money. ”
Lizzie: "Too bad it makes such a stench."
** It's coming!!!! Stay tuned for details!!

Monday #Horror Movie Thoughts
It's Monday, so I figured I'd post something quick while I finish up re-reading and re-edit of
Lizzie Borden, Zombie Hunter
, and waiting for a couple more blurbs/pre-pub reviews for book 2. Yes, it takes a while!
So a thought on Zombie and Horror Movies -- Do you have a movie you like to re-watch? One you think holds up on repeat viewings?
Mine: It's not zombies, but I just re-watched Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter . I loved this movie when I first saw it and was reading the book. Such an original, wish-I'd-thought-of-that idea!
I still love the movie as much as the first time. It's unique, plenty of action, and makes sense. Plus it's just fun! Funny, as while I do like the book, I didn't finish reading it for some reason.
So, share--what's your favorite repeat movie?
