I started my writing adventure in 2000, when a collection of bizarre symptoms forced me to find a creative outlet I could pursue from bed. Since then, I've written several novels and two memoirs. I love creating characters and setting them down in situations to see how they react. My latest effort—Other People's Money—is the seventh book in the Madeline Dawkins Mystery Series, a concept that came to me out of the blue one day, and has been a gift that keeps giving. I'm proud of the way Madeline has gone from being the victim to being the champion of others.

I didn't start reading for pleasure until I was nineteen. But once I discovered the joy of stepping inside someone else's imagination, I was forever hooked. Because of the magic I experie

The feedback I receive from people who've read my books just lights me up inside! As I wrote to one reader who contacted me through my website, writing is a solitary pursuit, performed in a vacuum. Only when I read reviews or emails from readers do I experience the reward for countless hours of work.(less)

Hi Maggie!

I laughed when I read your question. I must confess there were moments while working on Finding Ruth when I worried about what others would think. I can tell you I would've never have written it if my mother hadn't developed Alzheimer's. Never in a million years. I think there are a few episodes in the book my brother would take issue with. But because he is now the one responsible for overseeing our mom's care, he can't bring himself to read it yet. He's just too close to the subject matter. So I've dogged another bullet, at least for the time being!

I have to admit I pulled a few punches while writing this book. I never meant for this to be a tell-all affair. What I was trying to do was put together my mom's life so I could better understand what she'd been through, and what made her behave the way she did. In the process, I had to face a lot of painful situations that my mind had glossed over or shut out altogether.

And really, this book was about healing - about finding a way to forgive, forget and to heal. It was important for me to understand who my mom was, what had altered her personality, and more importantly, who she was before all the heartaches and disappointments. There's also an important message that I wanted to share, and that is to ask questions of your loved ones while you have the chance.

And to answer your question, once I started on the project and got caught up in what I was discovering about my mom, I silenced the nagging, worrywart voice in my head. Piecing together her life accurately was the only thing that mattered. I may have to deal with some backlash at some point, but I know that I covered the story fairly. And in the end, it's a tribute to her strength of character and is a story about being able to love each other once everything else is stripped away.

So now I have a question for you: are you about to embark on a similar journey of your own?? If so, I wish you luck. You will probably encounter a good deal of surprises which may change your opinions. If I can be of any assistance - resources, methods, etc. - please feel free to ask!

Thank you so much for your question. It was nice to connect with you!

Warm regards,
Cynthia

Happy 2023!

Happy New Year! I’m a little late to the celebration, since I spent the first four days of 2023 obsessing over the latest book in the Madeline Series before sending it to the publisher.

Fortunately, I’m really happy with the way the three cases resolved in BREACH OF TRUST, though I just about lost my sanity in the process. Never have I written/obsessed over a book as hard or as quickly as I did wi Read more of this blog post »

C. (Never PM. Comment, or e-mail if private!) Any age is hard but elderly or longer years allow us to justify physical separation and so does preparedness, as in a slow ailment. Lovey was happy, strong, energetic, and playful like his other three siblings (plus Mom and two elder kitties: all here). I slowly got over the trauma of him appearing unwell the first time in his life; just reading a book with them him in bed. Without knowing it was heart failure or anything serious, he died in 9 hours. Was healthy every day of his life. We were told you can be born with a heart defect and be normal until you go. We *do* have thousands of memories in 4 years! We pay attention to our babies, they are the centre of our lives. Everywhere around home, every time we speak: "Love enjoyed this, Lovey loved that".

I am grateful we truly did pack in a lifetime of memories for him and I'm glad for your 18 years with your ornery sweetheart. Flowers surround his resting place all the time. Even in winter we manage something! Most importantly, his biological family and two elders keep our hearts and faces smiling. So do people like you.

So sorry to hear about Love. What a wonderful name for a pet. That must've been so heartbreaking to have lost him at such a young age. Our last critter was pretty ornery, hence the name! But he also had a super sweet side and he was hilarious. I think having thousands of memories of him has kept me from being super brokenhearted. It's like he's still alive in my heart and head. I'm sure you probably feel the same about your Love.
Warmest regards,
Fellow cat lover

C. (Never PM. Comment, or e-mail if private!) Cynthia, please have my condolences for Henricat. As much as we know life is a continuing advancement, the physical separation is the hardest; especially when our cats are equals. I am touched my photo with Love drew you to me. If you read the blurb, you know he passed away at only 4 and we wish he had lived to 18! You give me a smile today to indeed connect with the kind of people we need. :) From Manitoba with the rest of Love's family, Carolyn.
