7 Reasons I’ve Gone Back To A Paper Planner

I’m back to paper! I have been all digital in my calendar, to-do list, and journal for a few years now. Now I’m back to paper – at least partially. Here’s why.

I used to be all digital. I use Google calendars to see my personal, company, and my wife’s calendars across all my devices. My coaching clients can click a link to make appointments with me at times I’ve indicated are available, without exchanging emails to set it up. I track my to-dos with Nozbe and use Evernote to capture ideas, quo...

Another year of writing on being a leader, coaching skills, and interpersonal communication and I can say interest in each of these topics is increasing. Leading ourselves and others is often mysterious, usually messy, and rarely simple. Here are the best leadership and coaching articles on my website by number of views in 2017.

The Fear of Speaking And Other Bermuda Triangles For Leaders

Ships and airplanes have mysteriously disappeared in an area of the East Coast of North America known as the Bermuda Triangle. Leaders have Bermuda Triangles that make them feel helpless and fearful; things like public speaking, writer’s block, criticism, failure, and decisions. Here’s how to overcome your Bermuda Triangles.

Here’s the deal. The Bermuda Triangle is a myth. It’s true that many ships have sunk and airplanes have crashed in that area. It’s also true that the area is one of the b...

Get More Productive At Work With Gratitude

I’m a problem-solver. I spot problems and address them. This perspective has sometimes caused the people I’ve worked with to become discouraged when I pointed out the one part of their otherwise perfect work that needed improvement. These days I have a new approach. Here’s how to get more productive at work with gratitude.

In my own work, I’m never done and it’s never good enough. I see what else needs to be done, fixed, or added. This attitude wears me out sometimes.

What’s happening is our...

5 Tools For Successful Remote Team Results

Offices are a relic of the pre-Internet era. These days remote teams are the way to collaborate for results, while still having a life. I’ve been managing a remote team and business from my laptop for 12 years now. Here are my top 5 tools for successful remote team results.

Working remotely is my preferred way of working. I work from home and wherever I find myself when I’m traveling. Today, I’m writing this article from a Starbucks. My business is far from a one-person show.

Here’s what my...

Great Leaders Leave Space For Others

Leaders need to be aware of the influence their presence has on a group. Just by showing up, leaders can disempower those they hope will step up and lead. Great leaders step back so others can step up.

At a conference I mingled and talked casually with leaders from different organizations. And then The Big Leader walked into the room. Something odd happened. All the focus, all the energy, and all attention moved to the Big Leader. His presence filled all the space in the room.

Even though Th...

You Need To Discuss Emotions For Bottomline Results

Leaders learning coaching skills are often uncomfortable with conversations that involve emotions. It’s easy for results-oriented leaders to dismiss these conversations as a distraction from the real work of achieving results. They couldn’t be more wrong. Discussing emotions is essential for bottomline results.

Lack of emotional self-awareness can be a fatal flaw in leaders. Emotions such as anger and frustration aren’t necessarily the true story of what a person is experiencing.

For example...

You Need To Be Touchy-Feely For Bottomline Results

Leaders learning coaching skills are often uncomfortable with conversations that involve emotions. It’s easy for results-oriented leaders to dismiss these conversations as “touchy-feely” – a distraction from the real work of achieving results. They couldn’t be more wrong. Being “touchy-feely,” if you will, is essential for bottomline results.

How To Be Free Of Overwhelm At Work

If you feel overwhelmed at work, you’re not alone. A recent ABCNEWS.com survey revealed that 50% of worker feel overworked or overwhelmed. Surprisingly, those of us who manage our own time and tasks, far from living the centered, focused lives we dream of, experience overwhelm of our own making. Here’s how to be free of overwhelm.

We try to work harder to gain some measure of control. We try working longer, putting in more hours to get it all done. We try working smarter by delegating tasks,...

There Can Be Only One Priority

Priority means “most important.” Since we can’t be limited to only one thing, the most important thing, we’ve created the plural form, “priorities,” which is a contradiction in itself. Not understanding your priority will keep you from accomplishing, or becoming, all you aspire to.

The world we live in doesn’t understand the concept of priority.

Take airlines for example. They have Priority Zone 1 boarding. But they give it to all their frequent flier program participants, anyone with their...
