New “Unhuggables” blog post. Slightly different tone than the others… a little more digressive, which is my normal way of writing. –TmC

New “Unhuggables” blog post, this time on a katydid nymph we found in our backyard. I was going to call it “Nymphomania,” but was for some reason attacked by an insidious bout of good taste and decided otherwise….

“Wisconsin Unhuggables” blog
I’ve just begun blogging for Wisconsin Trails magazine, with the topic being the Dairy State’s less-loved and least-cuddly critters. As I say in the first entry (“Greetings”) this will be an appreciation of these animals, not a strict study of natural history, although I intend to include that wherever necessary. I’m looking to get across what writer and naturalist Robert Michael Pyle (“Chasing Monarchs,” “Mariposa Road”) calls “solid, meaningful encounter,” rather than a strict field-guide-style listing of facts and figures. Check it out now and then.

On a bluff prairie in western Wisconsin
Very precarious walking on these things… steep drops, loose earth, many loose rocks, and maybe a timber rattler at every step. We did, in fact, see a rattler on this excursion but it was a prima donna and did not allow for any photo opportunities. Next time!

Gray ratsnake
Elaphe obsoleta spiloides Wyalusing State Park, Wisconsin. May 2012. My wife spotted this beautiful critter near the women’s restroom. Here I’m just starting to pick it up so I could move it to the woods.
