Kurt Vonnegut Quote: Who Do You Pretend to Be?

Send to Kindle

I love this Kurt Vonnegut Quote:

“We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful what we pretend to be.” – Kurt Vonnegut (inspirational quote on pretending)

It got me thinking about the various masks and roles we each wear.

I once heard an author who was painfully shy speak to a roomful of writers. He said as long as he was wearing his cowboy hat, he could pretend to be confident, and thus that is how he felt when speaking.

We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful what we pretend to be. - Kurt Vonegut

I would never have known he was that uncomfortable, because he came across so well.

Who Do You Pretend to Be around Mom?

Do you act differently when you’re with your mom than with your best friend? Probably, at least to some degree.

That could be a mild example of pretending. Depending on your mom and how you want to be perceived.

Do you have a different work persona?

Sure, you’re relaxed at home, but some people definitely have a whole new way of being at work.

Do you pretend to be the efficient one? THe climber?

One person I know pretends to be the person at the hot center of it all when she most assuredly is not. And yet, by pretending to be in the heart of the action, she moves herself in that direction little by little. Maybe in a few weeks or months, she will indeed be at the core.

Who Are You Pretending to Be?

Everyone wears different masks. Everyone behaves differently with certain people or in certain situation. That’s what Vonnegut is getting at with this quote.

Are you pretending to be small and inconsequential? The truth is, you are a magnificent miracle! Never shrink and cower into someone less than who you are.

Pre-Tend

Since you will become that which you pretend to be, why not pre-tend consciously.

Pre means before, and TEND has several meanings, including lead, be inclined toward a behavior or action,  and journey.

This fits beautifully into a powerful way of being.

TEND your mindset.  Lead your mind along a journey toward purpose and abundance…even before you see evidence of your desires.

TEND your words. Lead your words so they take you on a journey to clear and loving communication, even when you may be considering spreading hurtful words or gossip. Put a guardian at your lips and speak words of love and power.

TEND your actions.  Lead yourself along a course of action that rings you health, prosperity and love, even before you see evidence of flourishing.

Because what you see, you cause  to be. What you resist persists..

PRE-TEND well, dear friend!

Writer, Are You in Love with Your Reader?

Send to KindleIt's a good thing to remember that you are writing for a reader whom you love!

Reshared post from +John Kremer

Someone should write a book where the main character slowly falls in love with the reader.

And writers, if you don’t fall in love with your readers, your book will fail. Fall in love. Every day.

Guy Kawasaki Social Posting Formula

Send to Kindle+Guy Kawasaki …. Perhaps he is a freak of nature, but he's very open about sharing his techniques. Here is what he does to share so much material all over the place without being annoying.

You don't have to aspire to be exactly like him, but perhaps you can pick up some tips and make your social life easier and more effective.

A big thank you to +Denise Wakeman for bringing this to my attention. She is one of the best resources I have found on the web. You should definitely follow her!

Behind the Scenes: How I Post on Social Media

Following me on social media means that you are drinking from a fire hose. I subscribe to the “more is more” philosophy of social-media—meaning that I share approximately ten to fifty posts everyday to provide a constant flow of information, analysis, education, and assistance to my followers.

The NPR Model

I admire NPR because it is an ever-flowing source of great content. Its content is so good that it can run a pledge-drive every few months. This promotion is heinous because it interrupts programming to do the most pedestrian of things: ask for money. And yet we tolerate, if not participate in, the pledge drives!

NPR earns the right to promote its need for money, and this is a beautiful and enviable scheme. My adaptation of the NPR Model is to provide good content that people would not have found, or would have found at great effort, without me. By doing so, I earn the right to sporadically promote Canva, my books, or anything else that I please.

This is the down and dirty method that I'm posting every day on social media. What works for you?

How to Be a More Consistent Blogger

Send to KindleThis article gives you a great way to write posts more consistently.

Blog More Consistently by Writing the Same Time Every Day – Professional Content Creation

In an earlier post, I wrote about the importance of writing rituals, and how that in many ways, rituals are simply routines. In the same way that rituals and routines can help you blog more consistently and productively, blogging the same time every day can help with that as well. This is true because any [...]

Forcing Grey – Making Your Characters Embrace Ambiguity

Send to KindleOne of the things that makes fiction interesting is tension. People like complex characters…heroes that aren't all sweetness and light, and villains with depth and likeable qualities.

This is a cool article about mixing it up for your hero. Thanks, +Harley Christensen  & +Angela Ackerman .
