Jogger vs. Pack of Dogs

Stonewall woman receives award for bravery in dog pack attack | NewsOK.com:

""They were coming at me like hungry piranhas, and I was dinner," Murray said. "The harder I fought the more aggressive they got."
Murray tried to ward them off with a small pocket knife, but the six dogs — ranging from medium to large — kept coming at him with all their weight behind their snapping, sharp teeth. He said the canines had him surrounded. Although blood oozed from the numerous wounds the dogs had made in his calves and thighs, Murray continued plugging along, covering five blocks while the dogs repeatedly lunged at him."

Leopard-Human Conflicts in India

As Humans Draw Nearer, Leopards Attack in India - NYTimes.com:

This article notes the prevalence of attacks caused by human encroachment:

"Several rural villages in India have suffered leopard attacks in recent months, most recently on Saturday in the northeastern state of Assam. In July alone, nearly 16 people were mauled in four different attacks across the country."

It also notes difficult circumstances that may not occur to comfortable Westerners:

"People living in areas close to leopard habitats sometimes run into trouble when they enter jungles to defecate, Ms. Wright said. In some areas or rural India, only a tiny percentage of households have access to modern sanitation, she noted."

Cougar Attacks Child

Alberta cougar killed after attack on child - Calgary - CBC News:

"The girl was hiking with family near Barrier Lake, in Bow Valley Provincial Park, on Sunday when the attack happened. The girl's father drove the cougar away and she suffered only minor cuts and puncture wounds. Conservation officers later tracked down and killed the animal.

'It's attacked a human. It would do it again,' said Glenn Naylor, a district conservation officer.

Last month another young cougar, which turned out to be a litter mate of this latest attacker, was destroyed after it attacked a dog with a group of hikers near Canmore."

Travellers warned of 'killer seaweed' in France

Travellers warned of 'killer seaweed' in France | The Australian:

"The discovery this month of dozens of dead wild boars, suspected victims of poisonous blue-green algae, prompted concerned officials to issue a health warning.

Three dead boars were found at the mouth of the Gouessant estuary in Brittany, bringing to 31 the number found this month, floating in the water or washed up in the area.

The nearby beach has been closed for safety, its cove stinking with algae which give off a poisonous gas when they rot."
