THE LONG MARCH HOME available now!

Wow, I can’t believe it’s been four years since my last book release. My co-author, Marcus Brotherton, and I worked a total of twelve years on this story, writing and rewriting, wanting to get it right and do this chapter of history justice. And now we are so excited to bring it to you.
And so… are you ready to go back in time to a simpler era as three best friends grow up in Alabama… and then cross the ocean to journey with the too-oft unsung WWII heroes of Bataan?
Grab a beverage and settle into your favorite reading nook because we’ve got quite the story for you.
“[A] tour de force.”
-Publishers Weekly starred review
“An unforgettable coming-of-age novel… an important and masterful book.”

The Long March Home Recipe Book
When I write books, I love the research. And I research everything--from the setting to the night sky that time of year—or that very date in time—to clothing, weather, culture, patterns of speech, and all the things. I especially love to research food (which is my love language: ).
During the writing of this book, I was so fortunate to have the help of a friend who not only lives in Alabama near her mother (who remembers everything about the area and shared valuable details about Mobile, Alabama, the high school, jubilees, and some local favorite foods. She even gave me her mom's easy-to-make recipe for an item mentioned in The Long March Home: A World War II Novel of the Pacific: Chocolate Gravy. Now, I live in Nebraska and had never heard of this before (have you?) Find Sue's recipe from her church cookbook below to serve on your favorite biscuits as well as some other wonderful recipes for items in this book!

Sue’s Chocolate Gravy
1 c. sugar
2 T flour
1 T cocoa
1 c. milk
1 T butter
1/2 t vanilla flavoring
Stir first three ingredients with wire whisk. Add milk and stir. Cook in microwave. Stir with wire whisk several times. When thick, add butter and vanilla. Serve over biscuits.
Here are a few other foods mentioned in The Long March Home—sometimes longingly—with links to recipes to make them!

Jimmy Propfield joined the army for two reasons: to get out of Mobile, Alabama, with his best friends Hank and Billy and to forget his high school sweetheart, Claire.
Life in the Philippines seems like paradise—until the morning of December 8, 1941, when news comes from Manila: Imperial Japan has bombed Pearl Harbor. Within hours, the teenage friends are plunged into war as enemy warplanes attack Luzon, beginning a battle for control of the Pacific Theater that will culminate with a last stand on the Bataan Peninsula and end with the largest surrender of American troops in history.
What follows will become known as one of the worst atrocities in modern warfare: the Bataan Death March. With no hope of rescue, the three friends vow to make it back home together. But the ordeal is only the beginning of their nearly four-year fight to survive.
