Grimm: The Icy Touch by John ShirleyThe past comes to haunt Nick Burkhardt in John Shirley's Grimm: The Icy Touch. As a big fan of the TV show Grimm, I was so excited to find out there were TV tie-in books to the series. The storyline for this novel didn't disappoint; however, I thought the characterizations of the characters weren't quite what they are from the show. Shirley over-exaggerated the characters a bit too much. The book felt overwritten at times. That said, I did enjoy the plot in itself. I had to know what would happen and felt the pace was good and suspenseful. Although Grimm: The Icy Touch by John Shirley could've been better, I am looking forward to reading more Grimm books.
Sleeping Jenny by Aubrie DionneJenny's dreams lie a future away in Aubrie Dionne's Sleeping Jenny. I felt for Jenny's plight. Being cryogenically frozen until there is a cure for her type of cancer and not knowing what year or century you'd wake up in or if you'd wake up at all is a terrifying prospect for anyone. I loved how Dionne balanced Jenny's fears and hopes. Jenny felt real in her futuristic world. I enjoyed the world-building on how the planet became what it was. The story was fast paced and action packed. And when I got to the end, all I wanted to do was read the next book, which unfortunately isn't available yet. I love Aubrie Dionne's work, and Sleeping Jenny is perhaps my new favorite of her books.
By the way, I also love how the story ties in with Dionne's other series Paradise Reclaimed (Young Adult Science Fiction Romance) and A New Dawn (Science Fiction Romance).
Sleepy Hollow: Children of the Revolution by Keith R.A. DeCandidoFinding the medal awarded to Ichabod Crane could protect Sleepy Hollow from evil in Keith R.A. DeCandido's Sleepy Hollow: Children of the Revolution. I love the TV show Sleepy Hollow, so as soon as I discovered there was a TV tie-in book I had to read it. DeCandido has written probably the best TV tie-in book I've ever read. The characters jumped to life from the page and sounded just like they do in the show. The blend of history with present was seamless. The plot moved forward at a fast pace. I felt like I was watching the show instead of reading at times. Sleepy Hollow: Children of the Revolution by Keith R.A. DeCandido is perfect for fans of the show and anyone else who enjoys a great story. I really hope there will be more Sleepy Hollow books in the future.
The Pescetarian Plan by Janis Jibrin, recipes by Sidra FormanJanis Jibrin's The Pescetarian Plan will having you thinking of a different way to eat better and still enjoy food. I haven't been a very healthy eater, despite giving up mammals in 1998 and all meats in 2005 until I added back in fish and seafood in August 2013. I was more carb-ivore than vegetarian and then pescetarian. But this book makes me excited to be a pescetarian. With Jibrin's dietitian background and scientific research to back up her claims, she has crafted a basic way for people to eat more healthy, whether their intentions are to lose weight or maintain weight or just feel better about themselves. The steps are clear and understandable, and I love that you don't have to do everything at once. It's an ongoing process. The book also comes with tons of recipes created by Sidra Forman that I'm eager to try out as well as a section on how to cook fish for the cooking challenged. Jibrin also wrote a section on fishing and its impact to the environment, so the reader can find the best fish for them and the Earth. I highly recommend The Pescetarian Plan by Janis Jibrin and will continue to use this book in the future. 
Psych: Mind-altering Murder by William RabkinShawn's obsession with a new case may mean the end of Shawn's partnership with Gus in William Rabkin's Psych: Mind-altering Murder. I'm a huge fan of Psych and still can't believe the series is over. Now I've read the last book in the TV tie-in series, and I have to say it is the best of the five books written. Shawn is still his hyper yet extremely intelligent and observant self, yet this book shows a lot of the growth Shawn had throughout the TV series. The characters came to life on the page, and the fast paced plot kept me turning the pages to find out what would happen next. If you're a fan of the show, then you won't want to miss out on reading Psych: Mind-altering Murder by William Rabkin.
Loose Corset by Christine RainsMorgan's online role-playing game life comes to a head against reality in Christine Rains' Loose Corset. The strength in this novella lies with the characters. Morgan is smart and beautiful yet insecure and comes across as very real. Gorgeous Dean is a very sexy match for her, and yet I worried their real life obligations would get in the way of their budding desires. I laughed so many times at the geeky jokes Rains has sprinkled throughout. For erotica, the sex was steamy and inventive, but the plot was really what drew me in. I had to know what would happen to Morgan and Dean. Loose Corset by Christine Rains is a fun, steamy affair that'll titillate the geek in all of us.
By the way, I was lucky enough to read early drafts last year of all the Dice and Debauchery series. They're all funny and sexy and great reads.
Of Fire and Ash by Amber ArgyleNelay must never acknowledge the fairies she sees or the consequences will be great in Amber Argyle's Of Fire and Ash, a prequel to Summer Queen. Nelay seems more adult than her young nine years, but growing up in the harsh and unforgiving desert has stripped away any childhood she may have had. What I love most of Argyle's work is her world-building and this novella is no exception. She packs a lot in and makes the setting and people come alive. I particularly loved her descriptions of the fairies Nelay can see. My heart breaks for Nelay and her family. Of Fire and Ash by Amber Argyle is a powerful and heartbreaking story. I'm now even more excited to read Summer Queen coming out later this year.

#IWSG: 2015 Goals / Wattpad Wednesdays: Reborn Chapter 16

We made it to 2015. I hope everyone had a good holiday and is ready to start the new year. As usual, I'm doing my annual goal post today. And for those new to IWSG, my name's Cherie Reich, and I write speculative fiction. I live in Virginia and am a bookworm and cat lover. I'm obsessed with collecting owls and watching TV. My first published novel is Reborn, a YA Epic Fantasy, and I also write novellas and short stories.

READING
24 Books. Yes, it's a much smaller goal than my usual 52, but I want to read some LONG books this year and figured I needed to give myself a reasonable goal to do so. I will likely read more than twenty-four books, though.

WRITINGOnce upon a Nightmare: A Collection - I should have this second edition re-published in Spring 2015.Fall of Gravity: A Collection - I'm hoping to publish the second edition of this collection by Summer 2015.Marked - I'm currently writing this novella. My hope is to publish Marked (The Fate Challenges #1.5) before the end of this year/early 2016.Forged - Once I finish Marked, then I'll be writing Forged (The Fate Challenges #2). I'm hoping to publish Forged next year.Destined - I'm hoping to finish the first draft by the end this year and publish Destined (The Fate Challenges #3) in 2016/2017.Paper Lanterns - This short story will be in the 2015 Untethered Realms' anthology Mayhem in the Air, which is coming out in the fall. It's already written but will go through more editing.The Goblet of the Gods - A short story I hope to write this year for the 2016 UR anthology Ghosts of Fire. "The Goblet of the Gods" is set within the world of Amora (the Great Beyond or Norvadia) and takes place around 1000 AUC, or 1500 years before Yssa in Reborn. The premise is what happens to the princess if the dragon defeats the knight.BLOG
I'm planning to continue posting mainly once a week for the first four weeks of each month. Posts will go up on Wednesdays. First Wednesdays are IWSG. Second Wednesdays are now Bookworm News. For Third Wednesdays, I'm incorporating a new post called Falling for #SpecFic, and Fourth Wednesdays are my writing goals posts.

As you can see, I have quite a few projects I want to work on. And of course, any goal can be revised as the year goes on.

The Initiate by M. Pax
Saving the world is more complicated than it looks for Daelin and Earl in M. Pax's The Initiate. This book picks up where The Rifters leaves off. Daelin, an Initiate in the Rifters, must learn lesson number one, if she has a hope to help her sister and their world. Daelin grows a lot in this book, and she's quickly become one of my favorite characters. Earl must atone for his past before he can focus on his future. I enjoyed learning more about Earl. A few more questions are answered and more mysteries abound in this series. Pax has created quite the adventure here, and I can't wait for the next book! For a fast-paced thrilling novel filled with strange creatures, fascinating inventions, and unique characters, look no further than The Initiate by M. Pax.
Hellsbane Hereafter by Paige CuccaroEmma Jane Hellsbane must choose between Heaven, Hell, or something all her making in Paige Cuccaro's Hellsbane Hereafter. I've been a big fan of Emma Jane since reading the prequel novella Commencement. It took me a little while to get into this book since it's been so long since I've read book two, but once I got into it a bit and remembered who was who and the like, I didn't want to put the book down. Emma Jane is strong and pretty badass, but Cuccaro really forces Emma Jane to grow in this last book of the series. We see new characters, old characters, and the return of characters we haven't seen since the prequel novella. My favorite thing about this series is no one seems completely good or evil. There are so many shades of gray, even among angels, the Fallen, and demons. The ending is really perfect for the series as well. I highly recommend Paige Cuccaro's Hellsbane series and Hellsbane Hereafter doesn't disappoint!
The Trouble with Faking by Rachel MorganAndi has longed for the boy next door for years, but can she finally make him fall for her in Rachel Morgan's The Trouble with Faking? Morgan packs some powerful twists and turns into this novel. Andi has been one of my favorite characters of the series. She's quirky and confident and bold on the outside, yet she hides who she is and what she feels from almost everyone, even herself. I wish I could be friends with Andi in real life. She's so cool with her book reviews on YouTube and the stuff she crafts on Etsy. She gets into complicated situations, which almost ruin everything. I enjoyed the sweetness of a school girl crush between her and Damien and loved the interaction between her and Damien's best friend. I love how Morgan has set this series in South Africa where she lives. It's exotic at times and so normal at others. The Trouble with Faking by Rachel Morgan is a great addition to the Trouble series. I'm looking forward to the next book!
Vitamins and Death by Medeia SharifDeidra's mother screwed up, yet it is Deidra who almost pays the ultimate price in Medeia Sharif's Vitamins and Death. The stigma of being the daughter of a teacher who slept with a student haunts Deidra and follows her mother and her to their new high school. This novel is emotionally hard to read. Many times I wanted to shake or slap Deidra's mom. She needed to woman-up and become an adult for her daughter. Deidra has the potential for a promising future, and I craved that for her. Her growth and how she comes out of her depression is the shining light in this story. I loved her growing relationship with Malcolm too. Children don't have to be their parents, and this book displays that so well. Medeia Sharif has written a heartbreaking, gut-punching, and edgy book. Vitamins and Death is not light, fun reading, but I recommend it.

Happy Wednesday! I can't believe the year is almost over already! How did that happen?

My December goal to work on Once upon a Nightmare didn't really happen. I should've remembered that December is a very busy work month. But I do have two weeks off from work and hope to come back in January refreshed and ready to get to work on my 2015 goals.

Want to know how Foxwick came to be? I'm talking about the inspiration behind the Kingdom of Foxwick on Christine Rains' blog.

If you're in the Roanoke, VA area, Liz Long and I will be signing books at Paperback Phoenix on Saturday, December 20 from 1 PM - 3 PM, weather permitting, which at the moment doesn't look quite as promising as I'd like.
Here are my goals in January:Once upon a Nightmare: A Collection - I hope to publish the second edition of this collection by March. It might take me a little more time to get the money for the new cover, which is why it might take longer to publish.Marked - Originally titled Remarked, I hope to start back to writing this novella told from Liam's POV in January.Are you ready for the new year? I entered Reborn into the competition back in June and wasn't expecting much, but I'm thrilled to be a finalist. The Replacement by Brenna YovanoffMackie Doyle is caught between worlds in Brenna Yovanoff's The Replacement. I could understand Mackie's  plight as a changeling and unable to fully be within our world and not really belonging in the one he originally came from. He tried hard to be invisible, even though people noticed him. I love Yovanoff's world she created and how she took the idea of the fae and changelings, or whatever you wish to call them, and made them her own. The pace went smoothly and the story was well written. For a new take on changelings, I would highly recommend The Replacement by Brenna Yovanoff.
The Fire Seekers by Richard FarrA new religion sweeping across the globe will change everything for Daniel and his friends in Richard Farr's The Fire Seekers. Having studied the Ancient Near East, Ancient Rome, and Ancient Greece as well as comparative mythologies, I was immediately sucked into this novel. Undecipherable ancient languages, ancient manuscripts, Greece and Mesopotamia are likely to pique my interest, and I often felt like I was reading about old friends throughout the course of this book. The mystery swept me in further. Who doesn't love a good conspiracy theory, after all? But the characters sealed the deal. Daniel is likable and heroic. The cast as a whole is quirky, and I loved them for it. The adventure is intense, and toward the end of the novel, I was holding my breath in anticipation for what would happen next. A fast-paced story, The Fire Seekers by Richard Farr is quite the fun thrilling story. I'm looking forward to the next book in The Babel Trilogy.
The Hobbit by J.R.R. TolkienTea-time with a wizard and thirteen dwarves turns into an unexpected adventure for Bilbo Baggins in J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit. I first read The Hobbit back in 2002 after having seen the first of The Lord of the Rings movies. With the final movie of The Hobbit coming out in December, I wanted to read the story again, and it didn't disappoint. I'd forgotten many things and remembered others due to watching the movies. Tolkien writes this story as if he's telling you the story with asides and foreshadowing. Bilbo is a character to cheer for as he grows from a timid, flustered hobbit to a bold burglar worthy of a fourteenth of treasure. This story is lighter in narration and sometimes a bit silly than Tolkien's Lord of the Rings. I enjoyed reading The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien again and now I really want to read his Lord of the Rings again too.
A Diva in Manhattan by Aubrie DionneAlaina Amaldi must change her image if she wants to keep the role of Pamina in Aubrie Dionne's A Diva in Manhattan. A brash diva, Alaina often gets what she wants, except when it comes to love. Brett Robinson uses his tragic past as a barrier to keep from loving again. I wondered how he and Alaina would ever work out, even though they seemed perfect for each other. The dual points of view kept the tension high throughout. As I have read most of Dionne's work, reading this book was like coming home. I particularly loved the opera/music teaching parts since I once was an opera singer. With tender moments and intense ones, A Diva in Manhattan by Aubrie Dionne is a must-read story for readers who love sweet romances!

I've been making very little progress this month on any of my November goals so that means no working on Fall of Gravity or the outline of Destined.

It's a good thing I didn't try doing NaNoWriMo, even though I really missed not doing it this year! I've been having dry eye problems again, and reading and staring at the computer screen for 8+ hours a day sometimes leaves my vision blurry. When that happens, I have to take a couple days away from doing much eye work. Because of this issue, I've decided to take it easier on myself and not expect to do too much for the rest of the year.

Because of the upcoming holiday in the US, I won't be posting next week. I'll be back on December 3rd's IWSG post.
Here are my December goals:Once upon a Nightmare: A Collection - I've decided to work on this one for the rest of November and December. I hope to have the second edition of Once upon a Nightmare (originally titled The Nightmare Collection) ready by January.Format and publish Fantasy Uprising. This boxed set features authors (me included) of Untethered Realms.What are your December goals?
