5.0 out of 5 stars I'll Never Look At Bugs The Same Way Again

This review is from: Bug Island (Kindle Edition)
Although this is a YA book, as a 41 year old woman, I LOVED IT!!!
From the first page on, R.G. Cordiner manages to build up suspense at a lightning quick pace and not letting the reader take a breath… The fog is thick… the bugs are huge… and the humans are terrified… There are a couple of surprise twists in the story and the ending had me gasping in shock.
An excellent book for readers of all ages!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice little story, nasty big bugs, November 13, 2010
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Bug Island (Kindle Edition)
I rather enjoyed this book. Once they got on the island, the pace picked up and held my interest until the end of the book. I had to find out who, if anyone, would get off the island and how. There are a couple of unexpected twists in the story. Also, one of the characters seems to mature quite nicely from the experience. If your kids like bugs and would like an adventure escaping from huge bugs on an island, they might like this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Horror Lite for Young Readers, November 1, 2010
By
BigAl (With Carmen Sandiego)
This review is from: Bug Island (Kindle Edition)
The author, an elementary school teacher in Australia sent me a review copy of Bug Island. Although it will stretch the vocabulary of some (a good thing) it is suitable for most kids of reading age and will also appeal to many adults. One of R.G. Cordiner's talents is using nonsense words as sound effects. From reading aloud with my granddaughter I know that kids enjoy this and it's excellent practice for sounding out unfamiliar words.
As with Mr. Cordiner's previous books, "Bug Island" is a grand adventure. Although it would be classified in the horror genre, it is really more "horror lite". It also has object lessons in responsibility to others, friendship, and teamwork that are valuable for everyone, but are especially well suited for its prime demographic.

I had a review copy of this book. Very interesting, especially the sound effects. Although this book is written for YA I enjoyed it. You can't tell who is going to survive, until they don't! I really liked the ending too.

Treasure Lost review and Candy

Although the obvious audience for Treasure Lost is probably 8-12 year old boys, this rollicking journey has something for everyone. What boy isn't up for a little swashbuckling adventure? When I read this I was looking for something entertaining and a lighter read than a typical adult novel, which it was. Yet the story was still engaging for an adult. As with the authors previous book, Candy Wars: The Tooth Fairies vs The Candy King, there are valuable lessons and morals hidden in the story – things that even adults can stand to be reminded about.
Another talent the author has is the ability to communicate action with sound rather than description. This technique has to be seen (or read) to be understood. Young readers have a great time reading these sounds aloud while they unknowingly practice their teacher's admonitions to "sound it out". Just when you're convinced that "Treasure Lost" couldn't possibly come to a satisfying ending a few loose threads come together for the perfect conclusion.
