Mighty Wings are Back!
I had heard about it on the radio, but I had not been to McDonald’s since hearing they were returning. I’m looking forward to many a wing.

Get Ready for #HeartbreakHotel
You’re going to be seeing this hashtag from me a lot. #HeartbreakHotel is the novel I should have been working on a while ago and now I’m back at it. I just finished an anthology piece for Dead Frequencies (should be out in October) and I’m editing a piece for an upcoming novella titled Axe to the Face. I’m behind on the editing, but at least I have the short off my plate. I may put it out my short story with Axe, not sure yet, but you’ll see it somewhere.
But now I’ve cleared the way to truly begin Heartbreak Hotel. I’ve had this thing in the works for months now and have only written about 3,000 or so words. Really interesting small projects just kept popping up, including the short I wrote for

But I’m clearing the way. I may even make this book my NaNoWriMo project.

#Jurassic Park 4? YES
I’ve seen all three of these puppies in the theater and am eager to see another. Especially, if they make a movie out of the Samuel L. Jackson story line I read about earlier this year (couldn’t find the link, but essentially, Ray survives the raptor attack and uses his chewed off limb to paddle somewhere to safety and eventually becomes a one-armed dinosaur hunter or something). Right now, the movie is slated for a summer 2015 release.
Here’s the article:
Just because you can make another Jurassic Park, should you?!
That was the moral crux at the center of the original film and a question that resonated with fans when yet another, inevitable sequel was announced. Well, the answer to both is: Hell yes!
Always say yes to more dinosaurs. Always.

#Riddick #Review
The third installment of The Chronicles of Riddick
starts off with a bang. We find him already stranded on an unknown planet, left for dead. He’s severely injured and immediately has to battle for his life.
Through a flashback, we find out what went wrong on the necromonger ship (if you want even more of the backstory you can read the online comic), but in true Furyan fashion, his powers of recuperation have him up and running in short order.
But this new planet has treacherous lifeforms ready to kill at a moment’s notice. The leopard dogs and water-dwelling creatures that have a very crafty attack prove to be all a severely injured Riddick can handle, but he adapts and eventually finds some sort of a bounty hunters’ PlayStation where he alerts mercs that he is alive and waiting.
Two crews show up in short order. One is intent on bringing Riddick back dead, the other has a more clandestine agenda. There is a minor twist that plays out through the rest of the movie and by the end you’re mot really sure which way it plays out.
There are some pretty cool kills like a merc who’s killed by a couple predator-restraints and Riddick displays a fair amount of bravado. But if you liked the other two movies, particularly Pitch Black, you’ll like this one. There’s a storm coming and when it finally arrives, the entire environment changes.
I’d give this movie 3 out of five stars. There’s something cutesy that happens early on, but they keep it to a minimum and it actually plays into the story. The ending leaves room for another installment which I’d definitely be in line for.

#EvilDead 2013 Review
I have to confess it’s been many years since I saw the original Evil Dead
movie, but I did remember the storyline in large part. The 2013 iteration follows a group of four people who have gathered to support a friend battling to kick a nasty drug addiction.
I like how they took only a boiled down version of the original. I’m not sure if any of the names are the same but the idea in your head of the person you think will survive will be shaken up by story’s end. Truly, they have taken a story you know and made it their own.
And the movie doesn’t rely on CGI. In fact, if it is used at all, it’s subtle and noticeable and hearkens back to the Raimi original. There is a lot of gore, including a scene where a character has about a gallon of blood vomited into her mouth, but it’s not done in a way that seems like it’s trying to top its predecessor.
And the story works well into the horror. It makes sense why the people don’t want to leave until it’s too late and it makes sense why they all came there to begin with.
Per usual, there are things that happen that don’t make sense and characters who behave contrary to logic, but a little if that is to be expected. None of the negatives ever overpower the film including what one of the main characters does near the end.
This film puts me in mind of the Fright Night remake where they inject a lot of common sense into the actions of the characters. Nobody does anything because it would be convenient to the story; they have actual motivations that propel the story.
I highly recommend this movie to fans of the original. It didn’t need to be a remake; it could have stood as its own movie but it wouldn’t have gotten near the attention it deserves.

The Impossible #Review
I admit, The Impossible was a movie I’d picked up for my wife. I didn’t expect to like it. I figured the first few minutes would be compelling, like in Hereafter
(which was a good movie) but that the tone would take a 90 degree turn after. And it did, but that was a great thing.
The first half of the movie had Naomi Watts’ character and her son fighting against the tide to not only survive, but reunite with each other. Once the water recedes, we see they the extent of the damage and are left to wonder how anyone could have survived. But the story is focused on the family of five and we see the mother’s mangled leg. That’s all the foreshadowing we need to know something bad is going to happen.
Until this point we are left to believe her husband and two younger sons are dead. Minor spoiler, but they aren’t. After she and her son make it to relative safety, the story jumps to Ewan McGregor’s character as he searches for his wife and son. I don’t want to give away the whole thing, but when McGregor finally gets a cell phone and is able to call home–the way he loses it really gets to you.
The drama definitely doesn’t end after the tsunami is over. The one drawback is the extreme coincidence that happens at the end. It’s a little on the heavy-handed side and strikes as disingenuous. But other than that, it’s a great family film if the kiddies can take a minor scare or two.
Check out this 10 minute preview of The Impossible
