I don't translate them - even though Dutch is my mother tongue, translation is an art that I believe is best left to the professionals - but I am involved in the process; I read the translation carefully and am allowed to change things if I think this would be an improvement. The Dutch translator of BoHT, Jonas de Vries, did an absolutely phenomenal job though, staying true to the English original whilst also creating a text that works beautifully in Dutch. I think it also helps that, as far as languages go, English and Dutch are quite similar, which helps with minimising the dreaded 'lost in translation' phenomenon!(less)

“It’s a dangerous thing, to try and give someone everything. One day, you might find you’ve given away things you should’ve kept. Some parts of us must remain inviolate if we are to survive as a person.”
Johanna van Veen, My Darling Dreadful Thing

“There’s a reason the word ‘haunting’ is rarely used in a positive way. To never be free of someone, well, that’s not always a comfort.”
Johanna van Veen, My Darling Dreadful Thing

“I can't help wanting to live. Like other creatures, I am hell-bent on surviving.”

“I was never a happy child. I think that, if I had been, things would have gone very differently with me. For one, I don’t think Ruth would have become my constant companion. Spirits like her are not drawn to the happy and carefree; they want salt, be it blood or be it tears.”

“The question everyone wants answered is this: Was I or was I not actually possessed? But it is not so simple as that.”
