(I guess "I don't know" wouldn't be a very good answer, would it?) I think probably the biggest thing is that I've read extensively--both books set in the Regency, and books (mostly Jane Austen) written during that period. The latter are especially helpful, since the authors wrote about things from first-hand knowledge. I think Jane Austen's letters, for instance, are fascinating; in one, she complained to her sister Cassandra about the cost of fabrics, even quoting the exact price. Through her, we can see (a) what things cost; and (b) how cheap/expensive that might have seemed to a young woman from a middle-class family.

Of course, I also have a sizeable reference library, and I'm a member of the Beau Monde, a Regency-specific chapter of the Romance Writers of America. These amazing ladies can (and often do!) debate for days on end on such minutiae as whether or not dance cards were in use during the Regency, or how long it might take to travel by post-chaise from London to Yorkshire. They are a wonderful resource, especially for hard-to-find information.

To me, the hardest things to get right are the things no one bothered to write down: things that everyone of that day would have known, or matters too delicate to commit to paper--how ladies coped with their menstrual periods, for example.

And then there are the things I don't know that I don't know, if that makes any sense. To cite an example from another author's work: I recently read a very well-written Regency-set historical romance, but was brought up short by the mention of a paper bag. I don't know for certain--I guess I'll have to trust that the author did her research--but this sounded a bit "off" to me. I would have thought the only bags of the day were made of cloth, and anything needing a paper container would have been wrapped in paper and tied up (think Rogers & Hammerstein's "brown paper packages, tied up with strings"). I don't know for sure, but I doubt I'll ever use a paper bag in one of my books; even if that author got it right, it "sounds" wrong, to my mind.

I hope this answers your question, at least partly. I do appreciate your asking, and I'm so glad you enjoyed the Weaver series!(less)

“Miss Grantham ordered me to my room and told me no man would ever wish to marry me if I did not learn to behave like a lady. But Miss Grantham always behaves like a lady, and no man has ever wished to marry her, either, so if it really makes no difference in the end, I don’t see why I shouldn’t at least have fun!”
Sheri Cobb South, A Dead Bore

“Mr. Brundy, you are no doubt as well acquainted with my circumstances as I am with yours, so let us not beat about the bush. I have a fondness for the finer things in life, and I suppose I always will. As a result, I am frightfully expensive to maintain. I have already bankrupted my father, and have no doubt I should do the same to you, should you be so foolhardy as to persist in the desire for such a union. Furthermore, I have a shrewish disposition and a sharp tongue. My father, having despaired of seeing me wed to a gentleman of my own class, has ordered me to either accept your suit or seek employment. If I married you, it would be only for your wealth, and only because I find the prospect of marriage to you preferable –but only slightly!- to the life of a governess or a paid companion. If, knowing this, you still wish to marry me, why, you have only to name the day.”

Having delivered herself of this speech, Lady Helen waited expectantly for Mr. Brundy’s stammering retraction. Her suitor pondered her words for a long moment, then made his response.

“’ow about Thursday?”

“To wheel about in one's chair to address the footman would be completely outside the pale.”
