The madness continues

Comic-Con continues. I've had little time to do a post, but have been updating Twitter regularly via my phone.

So far:
– rooming with Rob Thurman (yes, she's a woman)
– seen/met Felicia Day
– met the great folks from Simon & Schuster (except for Jen, who still remains elusive!)
– gotten my Mysterious Galaxy first fix
– seen Stan Lee, Seth Green, Morgan Spurlock
– Had drinks with Tanya Huff (EEEee!), Les Klinger
– Did a panel & signing with amazing folks, following by a signing. The every wonderful...

This is how it goes…will go? a.k.a. Dream on!

In less than 5 days, I'm going to be in San Diego to attend what I consider one of the greatest geek events of all time: Comic-Con International. It's long been a dream of mine to go and finally, it's here. My first year attending and my first as an attending professional, w00t! Did I ever dream that part? Actually, yes. I'm not shy about knowing what I want out of my writing career.

A writer friend once marvelled at a statement I made: that one day, I wanted as long a line at our local...

Rebranding…or how chickwriter became TheMariaLima

Maria LimaWell, I've thought about it for a long time. Changing my identity online from "chickwriter" (who I've been for nigh on 8 years now) to a variation of my real name: Maria Lima. My boss, Joanna, preaches consistency of brand all the time–in fact, that's part of what clients hire our firm to do for them. So why didn't I listen? Maybe it's because I've been this person chickwriter since I started social networking on LiveJournal. Since that's the name I was/am known by in fandom circles.

After...

Days fly, time doesn't stop

I had this goal once–to do a blog post once a week. Obviously, it totally hasn't happened. ::g::

Summer's flying by. July 4th came and went with little fanfare, except for the fireworks I could sort of see on the horizon out my window. I spent the long holiday weekend resting, reading (finished THE WHITE ROAD by Lynn Flewelling, the latest in her most excellent Nightrunner series) and writing.

Final revisions done and turned in on my essay for SmartPop's fall anthology: FILLED WITH GLEE.
Loads o...

Finding the right tools

This is something I've struggled with for years–how to stock my writerly toolbox. From research books to notebooks to pens and finally to the Ooh, Shiny of the computer world.

Folks who know me in person for more than a month already know I'm one of those people called "early adopter". I LOVE technology. I LOVE the shiny. In fact, in FIRST GRADE, one of my report cards mentions how much I enjoyed working with the tape recorder.

This was in 1964 in a Catholic school. The nuns were working with m...

The OTW Weighs In on Fanfiction/Pro Authors

I think I've said it before, but it doesn't hurt to repeat it. I'm all for fan fiction: in my universe, in other people's universes, etc. I don't see it as an infringement, but as a deep abiding love of the work(s).

We authors used to think that, even if we were okay with fanfic using our characters, that we should avoid seeing/reading such fiction to avoid any possible lawsuits. I grokked that and figured, okay, sure. Makes sense. Only, now, I've changed my mind, especially after reading

It's real and it's here

Hi all, and welcome to my brand new Web site and blog!!

No worries to LJ'ers – this will automatically (I think!) post to LJ when I update here at my site. Thanks to the fab Frauke @ Croco Designs and to the amazing Ms. Stacia Kane who recommended her, I've got new shiny pretty site. WAY better than my cobbled together version!

Quick Update

Para-rom short story: Done and turned in

GLEE Essay: in progress

Noir short story: burst its way out of my brain Monday night. Wrote 3000 words in one fell swoop.

Mayhem in the Midlands con: not attending. :( Sadly, I am *still* not rich. I hadn't budgeted for moving this year when I made my travel plans last year. I'm VERY glad I'm in my new place: it's FABULOUS. I'm sad I had to cancel going to Mayhem, since it's one of my favorite cons.

No official contract for Book 5 yet, but it's...

Happy Birth/Death Day, Mr. Shakespeare (plus contest stuff & new hair!)

I was the uncool kid in English class–the one that loved Shakespeare. The plays, the sonnets: I was hooked. Mumblety years later, I'm still hooked. One of the very first apps I got for my iPhone was the Shakespeare app: all his works, ready to read on the phone. I can't tell you how many editions of his works I've gone through, probably dozens.

My favorite play: The Scottish play
My favorite sonnet: Sonnet 18 (what, shaddup, I know everyone knows this one)

I love reading about Mr. S...
