Rick’s Picks: I Took The Dalai Lama To A Ski Resort And He Told Me The Meaning Of Life
Rick’s Picks is a series of posts highlighting the very best content online.
Douglas Preston writes for slate.com about his ski trip with the Dalai Lama:
As we finished, a young waitress with tangled, dirty-blond hair and a beaded headband began clearing our table. She stopped to listen to the conversation and finally sat down, abandoning her work. After a while, when there was a pause, she spoke to the Dalai Lama. “You didn’t like your cookie?”
“Not hungry, thank you.”
“Can I, um, ask a ques...

Drop The Case
Who are you prosecuting?
The Practice:
Drop the case.
Why?
Lately I’ve been thinking about a kind of “case” that’s been running in my mind about someone in my extended family. The case is a combination of feeling hurt and mistreated, critique of the other person, irritation with others who haven’t supported me, views about what should happen that hasn’t, and implicit taking-things-personally.
In other words, the usual mess.
It’s not that I have not been mistreated – actually, I have been – n...

Paul Gilbert Interview on Confidence
“A lot of what happens with loss of confidence, is that we undermine whatever confidence we may have. Humans have an amazing capacity to monitor everything – and that can begin to cause you a lot of trouble – because you’re monitoring that there’s a problem, rather than monitoring that you’re okay. So if learn to acknowledge your monitoring without letting it take over, you stop under-mining your confidence, and then self-confidence will grow.”
In my Foundations of Well-Being interview with P...
