Character Mondays at Stone House

http://stonehouseinklings.blogspot.com/

My publishing house is holding what they call Character Mondays.  I had the opportunity to discuss my character Savanna.  It was fun to think about what motivations built the character.  The blogger was fascinated by the cover and loved to talk about it.  It is an illustrated cover and the illustrator took some creative licensing with certain female attributes.  If it sells more books than more power to him!!!!!

SciFi Fantasy Author Forum

I created a SciFi Fantasy author page as a forum for discussing how to write in this genre.  My favorite genre has been and always will be SciFi and Fantasy.  I have taken many writing courses over the years and when I mention I am a SciFi and Fantasy author I always get treated like the unwanted step-child.  It seems mainstream authors do not feel SciFi and Fantasy is a respectable genre.  I want to be able to share ideas and information on how to write good SciFi and Fantasy.

It's in the details

We experience the world through our senses. So, how does this

translate to our writing? In order for our readers to know what our characters

are experiences we have to be able to tell our readers what our characters are

sensing. A character isn't sucking on a lemon. 'Susan plucked the wedge of

sunshine yellow lemon from the edge of her water glass. As she lifted it to her

lips the clean scent assailed her nostrils causing her cheeks to tighten. She

could feel the moisture in her mouth. The slick skin of the fruit slid her

fingers as she placed the lemon in her mouth. Her entire face twinged as the

juice slid across her tongue and assaulted the back of her throat. She had to

blink hard to force her face back to normal. Taking a drink of water she forced

the tartness to the back of her mouth and grinned.' And that is how you should

allow your readers to experience a lemon. It's all in the details. Lemonade

anyone?

Sunsets

One of my favorite memories of my grandmother was sitting on the front porch of my childhood home and watching the sunset.  We had pulled up two chairs and relaxed as we watched the light blue sky slowly turn pink, orange and red.  The clouds floated across the sky like puffs of smoke slowly painting the horizon.  Nothing can compare to the awe and silence a perfect sunset can bring to my heart.  My grandmother and I didn't speak for the entire time the sun was going down.  We didn't need to, the sunset said everything that needed to be said.  Every time I see a sunset I remember the time I spent with my grandmother and the perfect communication we had between God, nature and a woman and a child.  Sometimes words are not necessary.

Hot Air Balloon

One bight, warm, summer morning my husband and I were out in the yard when a hot air balloon passed over our neighborhood.  We watched as it slowly lowered and suddenly come to a landing in the middle of our block.  Without even a word to each other my husband and I immediately ran to see why the balloon landed in the middle of the road.  The balloon chasers had pulled up and they were all pulling on ropes and holding the basket to keep it on the ground.  It wasn't long before the balloon was surrounded by dozens of people from the neighborhood.

The pilot looked out at the crowd and smiled.  I was taking pictures with my phone when someone called out, "What happened?"  The pilot explained they had lost their air and had to land, then she said the magic words "Does anyone want to go for a ride?"  I handed my phone to my husband and ran to the basket.  The balloon chasers helped my in and the pilot showed me where and how to stand and, within moments, the balloon was released and we were gently floating into the air.  We were perhaps fifty feet in the air when I suddenly remembered I was terrified of heights.  I was so excited about the opportunity to try something new I had forgotten my fears.  I felt so light and free as we drifted into the air.  I didn't feel as if there was anything beneath me and the entire sky above me.  I saw the neighborhood from a whole new point of view.  The angled peaks and gentle slope of the roofs floated amongst bright green tree tops.  The faces of my neighbors peering up at me slowly faded from view and they became tiny specks on the surface of the landscape.  I clung to the ropes as I peered over the side of the wicker basket.

The experience was beyond anything I had ever imagined.  I was not afraid.  I was not bound to the earth.  As we descended back to the ground I could feel the weight of the earth pulling me back to reality.  My fears came back and my worries surrounded me again.  I had to wait until the chasers stabilized the balloon and another person got on to add weight to the basket before I could get out.  I will never forget that balloon ride or the way it made me feel.  I believe experiences like this one makes me a better writer.  The details I experience are translated into my writing.  The experience taught me to jump at chances when they are offered.  It was a once in a lifetime opportunity that will stay with me for my entire lifetime.

Blog fixed

So, I have been unable to blog for most of the month.  My blog has had some technical issues.  I missed being able to share my thoughts and feelings on writing, reading and just experiencing life.  Now that the blog is back up and running I am looking forward to sharing again.  What would you like to talk about?  I would love to invite my readers and fellow authors to write guest posts.
