Science Fiction or Fantasy
I grew up reading Science Fiction and Fantasy and these genres have been a staple on my book shelf my entire adult life. I inter-mix these genres with Romance, Classics and Mystery, but when I want to sit down with some brain-bending escapism I always turn to these genres. There are always certain authors I can turn to to give me a sense of escape while creating a detailed description of new worlds and new heroes.
I am going to be sharing some of my favorite Science Fiction and Fantasy authors in the next few posts. I will explain why I enjoy each author and what I learned from each one of them.
I would like to know what authors impress you and what you learn from each one.

A look at a more innocent time.
I discovered L.M. Montgomery when I was in college. I realize most girls were reading about Anne Shirley and Emily of New Moon in the formative years between grade school and high school, but I seemed to skip over the Young Adult section of the library and headed directly towards teen and adult literature at that age. When I was in college I discovered many of my contemporaries had a literary vocabulary I did not understand. They would talk about the beauty and themes of literature I had never heard about. I decided I needed to go back and read the books they were talking about.
I started with the Anne of Green Gable series. As I read about the sweet characters with their innocent souls and pure emotions I fell in love with them. Montgomery made her characters so real and expressed emotions with such purity the reader has no choice but to fall in love. I couldn't get enough of reading her works.
Although Montgomery's characters are sweet and innocent she still knows how to express pain, sorrow and loss. I admire her strong, independent female heroines and want my characters to have the same sense of realism.

Starting with the all time great!
If I were trapped on a deserted island and could have only one book it would have to be "The Complete Works of William Shakespeare". The master wordsmith speaks to the deepest part of my soul. There is not a word out of place in any of his works. He knew how to draw on every human emotion: love, fear, hope, pain, strength and a plethora of others. Shakespeare didn't just write about love; he wrote about all aspects of love. When he writes every word has a purpose. Every sentence is packed with emotion and meaning. His works cross genre's and brings us to entire new worlds.
The themes of Shakespeare's poems and plays have survived for five-hundred years. How many soldiers can rally to the call of the St. Crispins' Day speech? How many women can despair of ever finding a man to love them and fear being left at the alter and so turn into a shrew? Political intrigue, spies and assassination. The spark of first love, secret crushes and true love discovered. Forbidden love. Revenge. The thin veil of civility barely cloaking the savage beast within.
It's amazing to me to think that if it wasn't for the efforts of Shakespeare's friends and the timely invention of the printing press we would have lost too many of his words. And so I leave you with this. "What do you read there my Lord?" "Words, words, words" (Hamlet Act II Scene ii). Of all the lessons I glean from Shakespeare my favorite one is the power and passion of words.

My next few posts
Anyone who knows me knows I am an avid reader. In addition to my studies, teaching and writing I read at least one book a week. I believe reading is an amazing way to expand your mind and experience worlds beyond your mundane existence. When I read I look at ways authors address issues, especially areas where I need to improve. I think the next few posts on the blog will address these lessons.

Are you planning another series after this one?
I have a number of projects I will be working on once this series is done. Right now I am one hundred percent focused on writing the Haven series, so those projects are at the back of my mind. There will be five novels in the original series as well as a number of novels and short stories stemming from the series. Once the original five novels are complete I will be able to turn my attention to the other projects.

I need help from my fans!
I had my students create a list of questions to blog about on my website. Well, I am down to the last question. I need more topics to blog about. I have some ideas, of course, but I want to know what my fans want me to blog about.
Does your husband ever get upset when you spend so much time writing?
My husband has always been supportive of me and everything I have done in my life. I have been very lucky in life to find someone as loving and supportive as him. Between my work as a teacher, writing my novels and pursuing my Master's and Doctorate, I have been very busy. My husband does feel neglected at times and he lets me know he misses me. I always try to make time to do something special with him. When we know we are going to be busy and not see each other for a while we make time to go out to dinner or go to a flea market or Saturday market together. There are always ways to work together and share our love.

How long did it take you to write the book?
The concept for the novel had been bouncing around my head for about two years before I started to write. I spent most of those two years researching the ideas for the events in the story. Once I had the general story outlined I started writing. It took about a year to write the novel and about five months of editing before the book was published.
