We experience the world through our senses. So, how does this
translate to our writing? In order for our readers to know what our characters
are experiences we have to be able to tell our readers what our characters are
sensing. A character isn't sucking on a lemon. 'Susan plucked the wedge of
sunshine yellow lemon from the edge of her water glass. As she lifted it to her
lips the clean scent assailed her nostrils causing her cheeks to tighten. She
could feel the moisture in her mouth. The slick skin of the fruit slid her
fingers as she placed the lemon in her mouth. Her entire face twinged as the
juice slid across her tongue and assaulted the back of her throat. She had to
blink hard to force her face back to normal. Taking a drink of water she forced
the tartness to the back of her mouth and grinned.' And that is how you should
allow your readers to experience a lemon. It's all in the details. Lemonade
anyone?
