15 Arrested at Valley Nuke Protest

Fifteen women were arrested June 30 for non-violent civil disobedience outside the Vermont Yankee nuclear power plant. Vermont Yankee is three miles from Massachusetts and a stone's throw from New Hampshire.

Nationally Known Bands To Play Near Brattleboro Sept. 17

Six local bands, some of which tour nationally, will play at a festival whose mission is to close the Vermont Yankee nuclear power plant. The music festival will be on September 17 in Dummerston, Vermont, which borders Brattleboro.

In Northampton, 175 Protest for Workers' Rights

On June 23, about 175 public school workers and their supporters attended a rally outside a meeting of the Northampton school board. They were protesting a decision by the board – also called the "school committee" -- to not raise the workers' wages next year. Several of the workers spoke to the board to oppose the move, which amounts to a pay cut for the workers, when inflation is taken into account.

Nationally Known Bands To Play Near Brattleboro Sept. 17

Concert Review: Simba

Simba played an excellent public concert in Dummerston, Vermont, near Brattleboro, on June 21. The evening concert was at the Grange hall at the corner of East-West and Middle roads in Dummerston. At least 100 people danced to the music of Simba for hours. The band plays reggae and funk, among other kinds of music.

Activists are asking the public to join them at a rally on June 24 from 7:30 a.m. until 9 a.m. outside the federal court in Brattleboro where the trial of Entergy v. Shumlin will be held on June 23 and June 24 from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. Peter Shumlin is governor of Vermont. Entergy is the Louisiana corporation that owns the problem plagued Vermont Yankee nuclear power plant. The reactor is three miles from Massachusetts and a stone's throw from New Hampshire.

Target Fights Its Workers' Union

Workers at the Target stores in Keene and in Hadley, Massachusetts, near Amherst, will likely be watching the outcome of a June 17 vote by workers at a Target store in Valley Stream, New York on whether to form a union.

In 2009, the most recent year for which data were available, Target CEO Gregg Steinhafel was paid more than $13 million.

Tashawna Green has worked at the Target store in Valley Stream for more than a year. She makes $8 an hour.
