$650,000 Bike-Ped Trail Will Be Built in Keene

Construction is expected to start this year on a major pedestrian and bicycle path in Keene. “We've been working for this since 1995,” Chuck Redfern told the Valley Post. He is a member of the board of Pathways for Keene, a group of volunteers that promotes the development, maintenance, and use of alternative transportation in Keene. “We raised $30,000 for this and we think it's finally going to happen.”

All Volunteer Group Saves Forest

A group run entirely by volunteers has protected hundreds of acres of forest land near Brattleboro from being turned into roads, parking lots, houses, or other kinds of so-called “development.” Now the Putney Mountain Association is raising money to save a 144 acre forest in Putney, Vermont. Vacant Factory Will Be Homes for Poor, Workers

In Easthampton, Massachusetts, near Holyoke, work will begin next month to convert a vacant, three-story factory into 50 or so apartments for poor and working class people. The multi-million dollar project is funded partly by a state program that was created by activists in 2000. The Community Preservation Act uses money from taxes to create affordable housing and protect farmland, forest land and wetlands from development.

In Brattleboro, Four Pedestrians Killed by Cars in Two Years

The man who was killed by a car while he was walking in Brattleboro earlier this month was the fourth pedestrian killed by a car in Brattleboro in the past two years. About 12,000 people live in Brattleboro.
