Walmart v. Chicopee

In Chicopee, Massachusetts, more than 375 people showed up at a rally to protest Walmart's firing of a woman for her union activism. Aubretia Edick had worked at Walmart for 14 years. She worked as a cashier at the Chicopee store. “I was fired for speaking out,” she told the Valley Post on December 5.


A worker who answered the phone at the Chicopee Walmart declined a request to interview the store's manager about why he fired Edick. Chicopee borders Springfield.

Amtrak Will Go Faster in the Valley Starting Dec. 29

In a grassroots victory, Amtrak trains will be getting faster in the Valley starting December 29. The trip from Springfield to Brattleboro will be 25 minutes faster than it is now. This is the result of the work of members of the National Association of Railroad Passengers (NARP). Their web site is www.NARPrail.org.


The trip from Springfield to New York City on Amtrak is expected to get faster in 2016. It is likely that more trains will run in the Valley, and that Amtrak will soon have direct...

Fracked Gas Pipeline Proposed

A Texas corporation wants to build a fracked gas pipeline near the intersection of Massachusetts, Vermont and New Hampshire. The pipeline would pass through Winchester, New Hampshire. Winchester borders Massachusetts and is about four miles from Brattleboro.


The Kinder Morgan corporation originally wanted the pipeline to run south of Winchester, in Massachusetts, but activists in Massachusetts appear to have succeeded in keeping the pipeline out of that part of their state. The corporation wan...

Eviction Protest Is November 18 in Springfield

Activists are asking the public to attend a rally outside the home of a low income man in Springfield who is being threatened with eviction. The bank that wants to evict Jeff Solivan is Fannie Mae Corporation, whose CEO was paid $6 million in 2010, the most recent year for which data was available.


The rally is set for November 18 at 9 a.m. at 32 Edgemont Street in Springfield. The group that is organizing the rally has a web site at www.SpringfieldNoOneLeaves.org.
