“Why aren’t you talking to me?” he asked her, stopping again and watching her. She tried to stay silent for a moment but seeing how upset he looked she decided to go ahead and tell him.
“I don’t think I have much of a filter left between my mind and my mouth when I am around you.” She looked at the ground as she heard his soft laugh.
He brings out the best in you. He brings out the truth.
“At least that hasn’t changed.”
“What hasn’t? I feel so far behind. Everyone around me seems to remember a past I can’t even imagine. What is wrong with me?” Iris asked, hearing the anger in her words.
“I am still not sure. Once I am, however, I promise I will tell you.” He started walking again and Iris double-checked that she still had her inhaler while she followed along behind.
“I am being led into the woods by a stranger and somehow...I don’t mind,” she mumbled.
Falcon burst out laughing. “That’s because I am not a stranger.”
Iris stopped and tried to clear her mind. The voice inside of her was speaking far too fast for her to understand, and it was making her head spin. “I can’t stand this. I can’t stand not knowing...”
“Izzy...” Falcon put down the bird feeder and came to her side. He stared into her eyes until the voice in her mind went quiet. “All you had to do was ask,” he said softly, still keeping eye contact.
A new wave of emotion passed through her and for a moment all Iris wanted to do was lean forward and steal a kiss. She kept still and so did he, both of them simply staring into each other’s eyes.

“How have you been, Izzy?”
“How do you know my name?” she said. Backing up she heard another voice.
“Oh come on, dear girl. Don’t be afraid. We are just making sure the birds are properly fed. Falcon, is that her?” A man and a golden retriever came out from the other side of the clearing. The man was carrying a bowl and when Iris looked inside, she shuddered. The contents were moving.
“Are you Joseph?” Iris asked hesitantly, but the golden retriever came running at her and jumped on her chest knocking the wind out of her and making her fall over in surprise. She couldn’t help but start laughing when the dog started to lick her hands, even though her laughs were pained and made her cough.
“No, I am Winston Churchill. Of course I am me, silly girl. And you are Iris Helen Azure, daughter of Elena Delilah Azure and Roger, the man who pays me to live here. Now that we have the introductions over with, would you mind helping us? There is a bird feeder over there that needs to be hung and Falcon can’t figure out where to put it.” The man was slowly spilling out the contents of the bowl into the cracks and crevices in the logs. Soon, more Lyrebirds started to come. “I spoil you silly birds rotten. Most birds have to hunt you know.”
“So...you know me?” Iris said. Both Joseph and Falcon turned towards her and tilted their heads in confusion.
“Of course we do,” Joseph said, bringing Iris the birdfeeder. He moved cautiously, as if he was uncertain about getting too close.
“Where would you like it?” he asked.

Read-Along Excerpt (for those under 18):
Walking along the wall, Iris continued to trace her fingers over the paintings and the carved bookshelves.
This must have taken years to complete. It must have so much love put into it. It is just so beautiful. Why? Who did it? What is the story behind these paintings? Iris couldn't stop the questions; suddenly, instead of feeling like she was getting closer Iris could only hear the multitude of questions race through her mind. Then her fingers hit cloth and she realized part of the wall she had been walking beside was covered with a curtain. It must be another window.
Opening the cloth she looked out on yet another breathtaking view. But unlike the perfect picture seen from the living room, this window also offered an apple—resting on the sill—that was just like the one Iris knew from her childhood; it was green around the rim—nearly a perfect match.
She let the curtain drop and put the apple on the nightstand.
He was in here.
Iris lay back on the bed and debated whether she should tell Diana about the handsome, smiling stranger or keep it to herself. The answer came quickly.
Not yet. Not until you remember.
