Ben’s Recent Updates

Bookworm by Michael Silverblatt
"Drawn from NPR's legendary "Bookworm" radio program, this first-rate selection of interviews reads as well as the show listens. Susan Sontag famously called host Michael Silverblatt "the best reader in America" and that's no hyperbole. His perception" Read more of this review »

King Kong Theory by Virginie Despentes
"My first Despentes book and it starts off so boldly and declarative from the get-go and digs in deeper and deeper from there. The subject matters of these essays/rants/eviscerations–like rape, porn, feminism, masculinity, and popular culture–are tack" Read more of this review »

More of Ben's books…
Kurt Vonnegut Jr.
“And I urge you to please notice when you are happy, and exclaim or murmur or think at some point, 'If this isn't nice, I don't know what is.”
Kurt Vonnegut Jr., A Man Without a Country

Walter Benjamin
“Mankind, which in Homer’s time was an object of contemplation for the Olympian gods, is now one for itself. Its self-alienation has reached such a degree that it can experience its own destruction as aesthetic pleasure of the first order.”
Walter Benjamin

Herman Melville
“I have perceived that in all cases man must eventually lower, or at least shift, his conceit of attainable felicity; not placing it anywhere in the intellect or the fancy; but in the wife, the heart, the bed, the table, the saddle, the fire-side, the country.”
Herman Melville, Moby Dick
