"…you've got to ask yourself one question: Do I feel lucky? Well, do ya, punk?"

Steve Chapman goes all Dirty Harry on Report Writer with "…you've got to ask yourself one question: Do I feel lucky? Well, do ya, punk?"

It's not that I don't like Report Writer, I'm certified in it, I've written reports from scratch in it (not just modified existing reports) and modified more reports than I care to count. I just prefer newer options.

In high school I owned a '73 Mustang. The big one with a hood as long as your house. It was a lot like Report Writer. It ran fine and was very fast…in a straight line. Sure you could turn it if you like sliding but it wasn't recommended. It also had this annoying habit of dripping ice cold AC condensation on the legs of the passenger when you turned corners. (Another reason not to turn.)

I figured if I ever wanted a second date I needed to upgrade my ride. Report Writer is a lot like that. It runs fine. It isn't as nimble as newer options and it occasionally pours cold water on people. If all you know how to use is Report Writer, it's time to upgrade your ride.

Weekly Review: Copy an Integration with a New Source

When working in Integration Manager, it's not uncommon to need a copy of an integration with differences in the source file. Maybe the source records need to be filtered one way for Company A and another way for Company B but they share a source like a CRM package.

Most people's first step is to try Save As in in IM. Save as makes copy of the integration but use the same source. Changes to the source file in the copied integration affect the original as well since they are sharing a source. Removing the source and adding in a different one removes all the destination mapping so users might as well start from scratch.

The way to copy an integration and adjust the source is with the Export feature. In IM, select Tools->Options and note the location of the default IM database Close the window and click File-Export Integration Select the integration and click Export
image The export will ask for a file, enter or navigate to the IM.mdb file where the original integration is housed. When prompted, name the new Integration and provide new names for each source.
image When this is finished, make changes to the sources without worrying about affecting other integrations

Use Word's Master Document To Organize Dynamics GP 2010 Procedures Manual - Etelligent Solutions

Judy Hirst from Etelligent Solutions looks at how to Use Word's Master Document To Organize Dynamics GP 2010 Procedures Manual.

In a related note, I was just thinking that I haven't seen any "Company GAAP" manual lately. These are typically a listing of the accounting policies and treatment for a specific organization. Things like "Our general depreciation threshold is items over $1,000 for items with a useful life of more than 1 year and not held for sale or resale".

I have clients articulate this to me but I haven't seen a written document in at a client in some time.

Alternate Allocation Account Method in Dynamics GP | Dynamics GP Insights

Christina Phillips tackles Alternate Allocation Account Method in Dynamics GP.

I find the trickiest part is after an allocation has been setup and working for some time, someone new will argue that it doesn't work right and you have to work through the examples all over again.
