Silver Nitrate blues
My newest novel has been out for three weeks now. It's always weird when a book comes out. More and more books have short life cycles. Often the bulk of sales happen the first week, and then wilt away after a month. Sometimes even faster. This means trying to find hooks for further coverage and praying the books get noticed during awards season.
From the point of view of a casual observer, a book may be talked about endlessly, but a writer will most likely see only a trickle of readers. Often it feels like you're talking into the void. After a few weeks, you often get the blues. At least I do with most of my books.
This post is a chance for me to ask you to review/talk/star SILVER NITRATE if you liked it. But it's also a confession that it doesn't necessarily get easier and each release is a struggle. Nevertheless and here's a silver lining: I have a re-release in the USA this September (UNTAMED SHORE) and we are beginning work on the cover of THE SEVENTH VEIL OF SALOME, out next year. Plus a few more assorted things.
SILVER NITRATE has the unholy vibe of a Henry James ghost story crossed with Juan López Moctezuma's B-movies. Come for the slow-drip suspense, stay for the 90s Mexico City horror diorama. If you liked it please recommend it. Thanks.

Untamed Shore returns
Untamed Shore, my coming of age novel that is also a noir set in 1970s Baja California, is out again. Well, technically, it's out for the first time in hardcover in the UK -- it had been published by a small press in the USA.
It will get a new edition in paperback in the United States this September.

Stepback for The Daughter of Doctor Moreau
Art reveal! This is the stepback cover (interior cover) that will be printed for the American paperback edition (published by DelRey/ PRH) of THE DAUGHTER OF DOCTOR MOREAU. The painter for this is Patrick Faricy
The paperback will be available April 11.

New novel in 2024
I have a new novel, to be released in 2024 through Penguin Random House, which will be titled The Seventh Veil of Salome. As Publishers Marketplace reports, it is “a historical novel set in 1950s Hollywood, about the making of a sword-and-sandals epic, and the equally epic drama happening backstage.”
This is a drama with no speculative elements.
