The Seventh Veil of Salome

It's happening. The Seventh Veil of Salome is out in less than a week (August 6). Yes, it would be great if you have this preordered. Three women, one film in Golden Age Hollywood, and a drama of Biblical proportions.

🌟

“When I want to read a book I know will be good, I go to Silvia Moreno-Garcia." —Taylor Jenkins Reid, New York Times bestselling author of Daisy Jones & The Six

“I’ve been a huge Silvia Moreno-Garcia fan since her sensational Mexican Gothic, but this epic of 1950s Hollywood really hits my sweet spot." —Kate Quinn, New York Times bestselling author of The Diamond Eye

“Using a kaleidoscope of perspectives, Silvia Moreno-Garcia skillfully depicts the rise of a starlet in 1950s Hollywood, capturing not only the glamour of poolside parties but also the sordid underbelly of the industry. That alone would be a great read, but she also weaves in the original story of Salome, adding rich layers to a story that bubbles with anticipation and will leave you spellbound.” —Fiona Davis, New York Times bestselling author of The Spectacular

"The Seventh Veil of Salome, she reveals—veil by veil—layers of emotion, character, the Bible, and Hollywood." —Lisa See, New York Times bestselling author of Lady Tan's Circle of Women

Bon voyage party for my uterus

I seldom like to talk about my private life because, well, it's private. However, I thought I'd talk about the health issues that have been bugging me since last year because they serve as a bit of a PSA

I'm having a hysterectomy in a few weeks. I have hyperplasia, a condition that can lead to endometrial cancer. Lab testing has shown some not so great stuff about the cells in my uterus, and therefore it'll be removed. I had no idea there was trouble for a long time. I had heavy, extremely long periods but I was reluctant to bother anyone about it. It's also difficult to get people to pay attention to "women's troubles," as our mother's might say. Well, if you have heavy periods, if you feel something is off, please do get yourself checked. I'm glad several family members encouraged me to make a bit of a fuss about my health.

Over twenty years ago I had an ovary removed due to a tumor. I thought my days of body horror were over, but just like the serial killer in movies the monster seems to have returned.

While my health issues have caused me a great deal of anxiety for many months, and although I will miss one of my body parts, I have decided to throw my uterus a bon voyage party of sorts by hosting a fundraiser.

You know how you can fundraise to commemorate your birthday? Well, it's like that. Except weirder. My charity of choice is UNICEF Canada and the Gaza Crisis fund.

I'm trying to raise $6,000 and I already ponied up $1,000 so that leaves $5,000 more to go.

Due to health concerns and multiple issues at this time in my life, I didn't have much of a birthday party last month, so I asked my friends to donate in lieu of a gift and I thought I'd keep it private. But then I figured maybe other people might want to make a little donation, and that would be nice too.

Although I had told some fans that I was going to visit several cities this summer to promote my newest novel, I'm afraid the tour has been limited to Seattle, Dallas and New York to allow me to have a more leisurely time as I will be recovering from my surgery.

I thought I'd add some promotional info about my books and other bits to this newsletter, but I'm tired, and this is probably the longest newsletter I've ever written already. Anyway, join me in saying goodbye to my uterus and let's see if we can raise a bit of cash for UNICEF's Gaza relief efforts.

Donate: UNICEF Canada and the Gaza Crisis fund.

The Seventh Veil of Salome

Well, it can now be revealed: The Seventh Veil of Salome will be out July 2024. This is not a genre novel, it’s a historical drama set in Hollywood, following three different point of view characters all tied to the production of a movie inspired by the Biblical story of Salome.

The official description is:

A young woman wins the role of a lifetime in a film about a legendary heroine—but the real drama is behind the scenes in this sumptuous historical epic from the author of Mexican Gothic.

1950s Hollywood: Every actress wants to play Salome, the star-making role in a big-budget movie about the legendary woman whose story has inspired artists since ancient times.

So when the film’s mercurial director casts Vera Larios, an unknown Mexican ingenue, in the lead role, she quickly becomes the talk of the town. Vera also becomes an object of envy for Nancy Hartley, a bit player whose career has stalled and who will do anything to win the fame she believes she richly deserves.

Two actresses, both determined to make it to the top in Golden Age Hollywood—a city overflowing with gossip, scandal, and intrigue—make for a sizzling combination.

But this is the tale of three women, for it is also the story of the princess Salome herself, consumed with desire for the fiery prophet who foretells the doom of her stepfather, Herod: a woman torn between the decree of duty and the yearning of her heart.

Before the curtain comes down, there will be tears and tragedy aplenty in this sexy Technicolor saga.

Guide to all my works (until now)

I realize I've written a lot of things and between reissues and different editions it can be hard to know what is what. Plus, sometimes people get the impression I've only written horror (no) or I've only written one book (ha!). It gets weird sometimes, like when my friends send me pictures of books like THE BEAUTIFUL ONES in the horror section.

So, here comes the handy-dandy guide to Moreno-Garcia books in chronological order.

NOVELS

Signal to Noise: Teens cast spells using vinyl records, drama ensues. Low fantastic element, don't expect dragons and such.

Certain Dark Things: In a rainy, alternate Mexico City a vampire on the run meets a street kid. Neo-noir, urban fantasy.

The Beautiful Ones: A tiny bit of telekinesis. A full serving of costumbrista drama. Romance! Misunderstandings! Ball gowns!

Gods of Jade and Shadow: A quest, Mayan mythology, a journey through the 1920s. Full blown fantasy.

Mexican Gothic: Big manor. Heroine in peril. Mysterious happenings. Yes, this one is Gothic of the horror variety (as opposed to Gothic romance).

Untamed Shore: Coming of age story meets noir via Baja California fishing village in the 1970s. Low stakes, nasty people.

Velvet Was the Night: Set against a background of Mexican political unrest in 1971. Gritty, violent, noir with lots of shades of gray.

The Daughter of Doctor Moreau: Historical drama, science fiction elements, inspired by 19th century Wells novella. (Note: It ain't horror)

Silver Nitrate: 1990s film industry, two best friends, a dead sorcerer who cursed a film. Crazy cult. Supernatural suspense.

NOVELLAS

Prime Meridian: Novella. Near-future, grim realism, dreams of Mars. Science fiction 5 minutes in the future.

The Return of the Sorceress: Novella. Sword and sorcery, full-blown fantasy heavy on the sorcery.
