This is my brand new “to be read next” shelf. Yes, I am behind a bit. Right now, I’m reading Size 12 is Not Fat by Meg Cabot. But I will get on to these next!

My convention year so far...
I had mentioned on Facebook that I am going to be cutting back on my upcoming conventions, citing the conventions I’ve recently gone to as the reason. This is what I mean:
I am a writer. I go to conventions to promote and to sell. I am not made of money, and a convention where my total sales is zero is not a good convention. I’m not expecting to break even (although it would be nice one day) but selling enough books to cover the hotel room or gas or something would be nice.
So, here’s the rundown so far:
Arisia: Love the con; sold ONE BOOK.
Arisia is mad expensive. The hotel alone is the cost of about three smaller conventions (it’s a four day con). Then there’s the travel up to Boston. And parking. And food. One book is not going to cover any of those things.
This can’t be blamed on the con though my own bad business choices influenced this outcome. But after talking with Lady Arielle and Trisha from Broad Universe, I think I may be able to give that con another go next year.
Mysticon: LOVE this con; sold a TON of books! I had a full house for my reading! I was on a bunch of different panels, I made new connections/friends… the con is in Va. but very much worth the trip. And it keeps getting better every year.
Lunacon: I can’t figure this convention out. I go regularly, not just because it’s like only an hour away from me, but because there’s always a great group of people there. I honestly think the problem is the location. As much as we joke around about the “Escher Hotel”, walking the length of that place over and over again is painful. It was made worse this year by there being construction on TWO FLOORS on the side where the convention was located, so everyone was housed all the way on the other side of the (rather expensive) hotel (including yours truly, who couldn’t have been put any further away if they tried). Scheduling seemed off, there seemed to be no fire in the attendees… and that led to NO SALES. AT ALL.
I’m still not giving up on them though. There’s supposed to be a change up in concomm, and maybe that will spice things up…
As for upcoming cons:
Ravencon: Hell yeah, I’m going to that con, never you fear! I usually sell well there, and I have a ton of fun every year that I go!
Balticon: I don’t know what is everyone’s fascination with this convention. I have yet to go there (to yet another expensive hotel at a distance) and find anything worthwhile within the convention. It is possible that this was because of the companies I was working with at the time or the company I kept (doubtful to the extreme), but I just can’t see shelling out that money for a con that’s failed me at least six times… even with some of my favorite publishers launching anthologies there.
Marcon: Meh. I just am not getting the feeling that I SHOULD go to this con. When I went to RKOCon in RI (and I’m going again for their next one in ‘16) there was a great energy about them. An excitement went through their e-mails, their groups… not so with Marcon. And now drama has popped up on their group, and it’s just sending the wrong signals to me. And I really don’t want to drive all the way to Ohio, alone, with yet another not-cheap hotel and be disappointed.
Pi-Con: Yep, I am going. I like the person in charge of programming - both in a professional capacity and as a friend - and it’s close enough to make me want to see how the con’s evolved.
Confluence: Hell to the yes! I am so glad they’re back!
Philcon: Sure, if they want me back! :)
