The Cynicism Behind US Rapprochement with Venezuela

Seeking to isolate Russia over the Ukraine crisis, the US is turning to a Venezuela government it earlier called ‘illegitimate’

Before announcing a ban on Russian energy imports, the US tried to plug this hole by meeting with representatives from a government they don’t even officially recognize, Venezuela.

Senior State Department and White House officials met with President Nicolás Maduro’s government in Caracas over the weekend to discuss resuming oil imports. It was the highest level communication between Venezuela and the US since they severed diplomatic ties in 2019, after the administration of former President Donald Trump recognized opposition figure Juan Guaidó as the country’s “interim president.” 

It is certainly a positive thing for both sides that there’s rapprochement. The sanctions imposed on Venezuela by the US and its allies had crippled the economy and spurred runaway inflation until recently. Venezuela had only in the past year managed to post decent economic growth, reined in inflation to the single digits and, in fact, is projected to out-compete peers in the region in the near future.

If economic activity resumes with the US this will likely help Venezuela’s economy even more – and, hopefully, the unfair and illegal sanctions may be dropped too. 

But, at the same time, the reason for this rapprochement happening now obviously has to do with the US trying to insulate itself from an oil shortage after it decided to block shipments from Russia. The United States is also trying to isolate Moscow diplomatically, seeing Venezuela as one of Russia’s key partners in the Western Hemisphere. That’s an understandable assessment since Russia has been a lifeline for Venezuela as it grappled with devastating US sanctions. 

It’s for this reason that Venezuelan officials would do well to not see this overture as anything other than ‘strictly business’. In its attempt to isolate Russia, Washington is turning to countries around the world trying to “make a case for the West” while also weakening Russian influence, including now in Latin America. It hopes to do this by providing incentives to woo Venezuela (and other Latin American countries) away from Moscow and back into its orbit. 

This is not to say that Caracas shouldn’t try to restore diplomatic ties with Washington, increase communication and have fruitful economic relations. But joining in with Washington’s isolation of Russia now would be unwise since it’s clear that if the geopolitical circumstances were slightly different, the US would be continuing its siege of Venezuela and its economy.

Does Pfizer’s Latest SEC Filing Signal the Drugmaker Is Worried About COVID Vaccine Lawsuits?

Pfizer appears poised to get permission from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission to dissolve its legal personhood, leaving no criminal defendant behind to face legal charges, or pay damages to people injured or killed by its COVID-19 vaccine.

Thanks to my brilliant colleague Joel Smalley, some answers have come as to what an email I received entails.

It is really hard to know exactly what is going on without some excellent background (which I admittedly do not have in the finance arena) and this is why I love collaboration and all of my new friends.

I will quote Joel verbatim.

“Companies can have all kinds of capital, ranging from ordinary equity (common stock) to senior secured bonds (debt). They can all be listed on exchanges (not just equity that most people are familiar with — ‘shares’). But you are probably also familiar with the term ‘stocks and shares’?

“‘Stock’ can refer to other capital classes, like ‘loan stock,’ i.e., debt — ‘corporate bonds.’ The security that is referenced in the document you shared has a ‘coupon,’ an interest rate (0.25%) and a redemption date (2022).

“This means it is some sort of loan stock. It has matured so there is no need to keep it listed on the exchange! There seems to be nothing out of the ordinary here IMO.

“There’s no way they could simply apply to have their common stock (equity/shares) delisted from the exchange like that. They would first have to buy them all back or call an extraordinary meeting to get shareholders to agree to the delisting.

“And even then, this would not cause the company to cease to exist. It would simply mean that its shares no longer trade on an exchange.

“To cause the company to cease to exist is a winding-up process which would take months and a whole lot more paperwork than a form!”

I looked up the CFR citation they checked off — 17 CFR § 240.12d2-2 — which refers to securities that become part of “evidence” or fall under a “court order.”

This comes just as the second batch of Pfizer’s clinical trial documents were released late last week, through the court case filed by Public Health and Medical Professionals for Transparency in September 2021.

And just as people reviewing those documents have learned more about what corporate Pfizer knew about the bioaccumulation, pharmacokinetics and toxicity of its mRNA products, and when it knew those things.

And just as other freedom of information disclosures make clear that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services transferred massive amounts of public money into private legacy media corporations to market and promote Pfizer’s product.

And just as attorney Thomas Renz, who broke the Department of Defense DMED story, also on March 7, notified the federal government and other defendants of planned lawsuits. See special notice of evidentiary findings.

The getaway plan is coming into view.

Pfizer is a “corporate person” under the law.

As a corporate person, it committed murder, medical battery, torture and fraud, through a U.S. government marketing program executed by legacy media outlets, and with the physical element of the crime committed by more-or-less uninformed and coerced nurses and pharmacists who injected the toxic pharmaceutical product into recipients at hundreds of sites across the country.

Now Pfizer is poised to get permission from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission to dissolve its legal personhood and disappear, legally, forever.

Leaving no criminal defendant behind to face the charges through the judicial system, or pay damages to the survivors of murdered victims or victims facing lifelong disabilities.

Large Scale False Flag Cyber-Attack Now Imminent

In early 2021 at the height of media generated covid fear the World Economic Forum released a series of panel discussions and white papers outlining a “pandemic” of a completely different nature; what they referred to as an impending “cyber-attack with covid like characteristics.” The program agenda at the WEF was titled “Cyber Polygon” and headed with unsettling zeal by globalist Klaus Schwab.

The WEF and Schwab are best known for two things:

1) Their involvement in a war game called Event 201 which simulated the global spread of a coronavirus pandemic. This simulation was held two months BEFORE the real thing happened in early 2020 and a majority of the measures played out in the game were in fact implemented almost immediately following the outbreak.

2) Klaus Schwab’s excited announcement that the pandemic was the perfect “opportunity” to institute what he calls the “Great Reset” of the global economy along with the rise of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, which is the complete centralization of world trade and governance into a global socialist empire where you will “own nothing, have no privacy, and like it.”

The fact that the WEF was so prescient when it came to the covid pandemic was quite a miracle. It was almost as if they knew it was going to happen, and their political friends in various nations wasted no time carrying out their draconian mandate policies around the world. But something happened that seemed to throw a monkey wrench into the plan – Event 201 predicted an initial death toll of around 65 million people, but this didn’t happen. In fact, the median Infection Fatality Rate of covid was only 0.27%. Covid wasn’t killing enough people, and the public was starting to question the efficacy of the lockdowns, the useless mask rules and the need to take an experimental mRNA vaccine with no long term testing to prove its safety.

In the US specifically, conservative states began to rise up and block the covid agenda. Today, the CDC and the Federal Government have declared the removal of most mandates and even leftist blue states are beginning to relent. However, most conservative red states have been without mandates for well over a year to a year-and-a-half. We’ve been without restrictions this whole time, and the government is acting as if they have just “allowed us” to be free again.

The truth is, the globalists at the WEF and their partners abroad FAILED in their efforts to institute medical tyranny, at least in the US and in certain parts of Europe. The agenda collapsed because the science was against them in every respect. They had nothing. With 99.7% of people safe from covid, it was impossible to engineer enough fear in enough of the population to get them to relinquish their freedoms.

So, for those of us that have been tracking these events carefully, the alarm bells really started ringing when the WEF switched gears and suddenly shifted focus to a cyber-attack narrative. Was this Plan-B?

In April of 2021 I published an article titled ‘The Globalists Will Need Another Crisis In America As Their Reset Agenda Fails.’ In that article I outlined the most likely scenarios for the next disaster event, which included war in Ukraine as well as a global cyber-attack that disrupts the supply chain. In that article I stated:

“The media and the Biden Administration are very busy trying to create tensions with Russia over Ukraine. There are renewed tensions between Iran and Israel and continued destabilization by the West in Syria. And, a rising danger of confrontation with China over Taiwan…

There is … a narrative advantage to global tensions; when presented with a foreign threat, are Americans more likely to reject notions of rebellion against government trespasses? I have no doubt that the establishment will try to claim the liberty movement is not a movement for freedom, but an “astro-turf” movement created by the Russians to destabilize America. This has been the leftist media propaganda strategy for years now; so why would they stop?”

Victoria Nuland: Ukraine Has “Biological Research Facilities,” Worried Russia May Seize Them

The neocon’s confession sheds critical light on the U.S. role in Ukraine, and raises vital questions about these labs that deserve answers

Self-anointed “fact-checkers” in the U.S. corporate press have spent two weeks mocking as disinformation and a false conspiracy theory the claim that Ukraine has biological weapons labs, either alone or with U.S. support. They never presented any evidence for their ruling — how could they possibly know? and how could they prove the negative? — but nonetheless they invoked their characteristically authoritative, above-it-all tone of self-assurance and self-arrogated right to decree the truth, definitively labeling such claims false.

Claims that Ukraine currently maintains dangerous biological weapons labs came from Russia as well as China. The Chinese Foreign Ministry this month claimed: “The US has 336 labs in 30 countries under its control, including 26 in Ukraine alone.” The Russian Foreign Ministry asserted that “Russia obtained documents proving that Ukrainian biological laboratories located near Russian borders worked on development of components of biological weapons.” Such assertions deserve the same level of skepticism as U.S. denials: namely, none of it should be believed to be true or false absent evidence. Yet U.S. fact-checkers dutifully and reflexively sided with the U.S. Government to declare such claims “disinformation” and to mock them as QAnon conspiracy theories.

Unfortunately for this propaganda racket masquerading as neutral and high-minded fact-checking, the neocon official long in charge of U.S. policy in Ukraine testified on Monday before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and strongly suggested that such claims are, at least in part, true. Yesterday afternoon, Under Secretary of State Victoria Nuland appeared before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL), hoping to debunk growing claims that there are chemical weapons labs in Ukraine, smugly asked Nuland: “Does Ukraine have chemical or biological weapons?”

Rubio undoubtedly expected a flat denial by Nuland, thus providing further “proof” that such speculation is dastardly Fake News emanating from the Kremlin, the CCP and QAnon. Instead, Nuland did something completely uncharacteristic for her, for neocons, and for senior U.S. foreign policy officials: for some reason, she told a version of the truth. Her answer visibly stunned Rubio, who — as soon as he realized the damage she was doing to the U.S. messaging campaign by telling the truth — interrupted her and demanded that she instead affirm that if a biological attack were to occur, everyone should be “100% sure” that it was Russia who did it. Grateful for the life raft, Nuland told Rubio he was right.

But Rubio’s clean-up act came too late. When asked whether Ukraine possesses “chemical or biological weapons,” Nuland did not deny this: at all. She instead — with palpable pen-twirling discomfort and in halting speech, a glaring contrast to her normally cocky style of speaking in obfuscatory State Department officialese — acknowledged: “uh, Ukraine has, uh, biological research facilities.” Any hope to depict such “facilities” as benign or banal was immediately destroyed by the warning she quickly added: “we are now in fact quite concerned that Russian troops, Russian forces, may be seeking to, uh, gain control of [those labs], so we are working with the Ukrainiahhhns [sic] on how they can prevent any of those research materials from falling into the hands of Russian forces should they approach”

This lecture mainly concerns the birth of the evangelical “Holiness” movement (in both Black and White southern communities) and its gradual evolution into the evangelical and pentacostal movements.

Immediately after the Civil War, there were fewer churchgoers in the South than in the North, largely because the South was more rural and sparsely populated. In fact, fewer than one quarter of rural churches (mainly Baptist and Methodist denominations) had full time ministers. Many had to work outside jobs to support their families or served four or more churches simultaneously. In Southern cities, religious affiliations included Lutheran, Quaker, Jewish, Catholic and other denominations.

Different denominations frequently collaborated to organize yearly “revival” camp meetings to increase church membership. The Holiness movement arose among Methodist congregations in the late 1880s. It taught that a person could only achieve holiness or “sanctification” through a “second blessing” demonstrating direct connection with God. This usually manifested as fainting, “speaking in tongues” or other loss of voluntary control.

The Christian Union (founded in 1864) also significantly increased its membership during this time. Their doctrines included foot washing, total immersion baptism and preparation for the second coming of Christ. Under the leadership of A A Thomlinson, it took the name Church of God in 1907 and attracted over a million members in 13 countries.

In 1894, the Methodist General Conference banned “Holiness” ministers from preaching to Methodist congregations and forced them to form their own churches.

Black southerners founded their own Church of God, as well as the Church of the Living God, the Church of God in Christ and the Church of God Saints of Christ. The latter taught that Black people were descended from the lost tribes of Israel. The Church of the Living God taught that Jesus was a Black man. All were expelled from the Baptist Church in the 1890s.

Ayers believes the main driver of the evangelical/pentacostal movement was a rejection of rapid urbanization, industrialization and mass advertising occurring in the late 19th and early 20th century. The North had been undergoing industrialization and urbanization for more than 50 years, whereas the change occurred much more abruptly in the South after the Civil War. Throughout the US, a growing number of Americans rejected the deliberate temptation to acquire more material goods promoted by the advertising industry. Instead they looked to the new religions for guidance in simplifying their lives.

Russia warns of ‘catastrophic’ fallout if West bans oil imports

Kremlin official threatens to cut Europe’s gas supplies and warns oil prices could top $300 per barrel in the event of a ban on Russian oil.

A top Russian official has warned that a Western ban on Russian oil imports could result in oil prices more than doubling to about $300 per barrel and prompt the closure of the main gas pipeline from Russia to Germany.

In a statement on state television on Monday, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak said it was “absolutely clear that a rejection of Russian oil would lead to catastrophic consequences for the global market”.

“The surge in prices would be unpredictable,” he said. “It would be $300 per barrel if not more.”

The warning came as the United States – seeking to ratchet up the pressure on Moscow over its invasion of Ukraine – said Washington and its European allies were considering banning Russian oil imports.

The White House said US President Joe Biden, who is facing growing calls from US lawmakers to cut off Russia from the money it gets from oil and natural gas exports, discussed the issue during a conference call with his counterparts in France, Germany and the United Kingdom on Monday.

But Biden has not made a decision “at this point”, a spokesperson said.

Western countries have hit Moscow with a wall of sanctions following its assault on Ukraine, with Washington slapping sanctions on exports of technologies to Russian refineries and the Nord Stream 2 that was due to pipe gas from Russia to Germany.

Berlin, which is heavily reliant on Russian crude oil, also froze the certification of that pipeline.

But German Chancellor Olaf Scholz earlier on Monday cautioned against a ban on Russian oil and gas, saying Russian energy imports were “essential” to Europeans’ daily lives.

‘We are ready for it’

Russia supplies 40 percent of Europe’s gas.

It is also the world’s top exporter of crude and oil products combined, with around 7 million barrels per day or about 7 percent of global supply.

Novak, the Russian deputy prime minister, said if Europe were to ban Russian oil and gas, it would take countries on the continent more than a year to replace the volume of oil it receives from Russia and they would have to pay significantly higher prices.

“European politicians need to honestly warn their citizens and consumers what to expect,” Novak said.

“If you want to reject energy supplies from Russia, go ahead. We are ready for it. We know where we could redirect the volumes to.”

A Story About Polio, Pesticides and the Meaning of Science

The official story of polio

We all know the official story of polio: In the early 20th century, a polio epidemic showed up in the affluent West, and it was bad.

Then in 1954, the Salk Institute came up with a great polio vaccine — and hooray! The epidemic was stopped, and the people were no longer getting polio. Problem solved!

Vaccines save lives! (Therefore, it is immoral, unthinkable and despicable to ever doubt any vaccines. Any questions? Hope not. Case closed.) But is it really closed, or is there room for debate?

First, let’s examine the official theory about the onset of the polio epidemic that accidentally reveals a “bug” in modern science where the scientists go after fixing one thing — assuming they know better than nature — and then break something else that they have not quite thought through.

So then they “patch” it, break something else and so on.

At each turn, there is usually someone promoting each patch as the greatest thing in the world — while insisting that only a fool would consider unwrapping this “cabbage” of fixes and asking the village yokel question: “Is it possible that we haven’t quite thought things through at the very first turn — should we maybe finally think it through at long last, and change our approach accordingly?”

So here is the official theory of why polio outbreaks started happening, as told on historyofVaccines.org:

“Polio reached epidemic proportions in the early 1900s in countries with relatively high standards of living, at a time when other diseases such as diphtheria, typhoid and tuberculosis were declining. Indeed, many scientists think that advances in hygiene paradoxically led to an increased incidence of polio.

“The theory is that in the past, infants were exposed to polio, mainly through contaminated water supplies, at a very young age. Infants’ immune systems, aided by maternal antibodies still circulating in their blood, could quickly defeat poliovirus and then develop lasting immunity to it.

“However, better sanitary conditions meant that exposure to polio was delayed until later in life, on average, when a child had lost maternal protection and was also more vulnerable to the most severe form of the disease.”

Poliomyelitis-like symptoms caused by poisoning

In 1951, Dr. Ralph R. Scobey published an article in Archives of Pediatrics, titled “Is the public health law responsible for the poliomyelitis mystery?”

In the article, Scobey investigated the evidence showing the contagiousness (or not) of poliomyelitis — and talked about how the research into complex causes of the disease had been decapitated once the “official” opinion was declared. Among other things, he stated the following:

“Unlimited poliomyelitis research ceased abruptly when this disease was legally made a communicable disease. However, definite progress toward a solution to the problem was being made before the public health law made poliomyelitis a germ or virus disease. For example, it was reported by toxicologists and bacteriologists that poliomyelitis could be produced both by organic and inorganic poisons as well as by bacterial toxins.

The Rockefeller brand

In his article, Scobey also mentioned that in 1911, Sachs [Sachs, B.: Am. J. Obst. & Gynec., 63: 703-710, April 1911] indicated that “Our present knowledge of the possible methods of contagion is based almost entirely upon the work done in this city at the Rockefeller Institute,” and that children afflicted with the disease were kept in general hospital wards and that not a single one of the other inmates of the wards of the hospital was affected with the disease — which of course contradicted the “viral” theory of polio.

More on polio and poisoning

In 1952, Scobey published a detailed meta-analysis titled, “The Poison Cause of Poliomyelitis And Obstructions To Its Investigation,”  in which he looked at a broad range of studies and analyses that existed on the topic of polio — and concluded that there seemed to be a causal relationship between polio outbreaks and consumption of certain agricultural products, potentially linking polio to pesticide poisoning (for example, lead and arsenic compounds during this pre-DDT period).

There was a time when DDT was advertised as “safe and effective.” It was supposed to be an extremely effective pesticide, and “the experts” recommended that DDT should be sprayed everywhere. One of the “benefits” was preventing polio!

Parents sent their children to run after the trucks spraying DDT and also sprayed DDT everywhere in the house — clearly with the best of intentions, for the health of their kids and the household. Remind you of anything? Take a look at the Time Magazine issue from June 30, 1947, that ran the following ad:

DDT as a possible cause of polio

There is a theory that DDT poisoning was a major contributor to paralysis diagnosed as polio. The timeline supports it, and it is one of those cases where I have to humbly accept not knowing the definitive answer at this very second.

The Salk vaccine was introduced in 1954. DDT was banned in the U.S. in 1972. Polio was officially eradicated in the U.S. in 1979. (The vaccine-derived version of polio (!) is reported to be spreading now in developing countries, and according to ABC News, “More polio cases now caused by vaccine than by wild virus.”)

War on Ukraine Sparks Fears of Global Food Crisis ‘Beyond Anything We’ve Seen’

As Russia intensifies its war on Ukraine, agricultural output from one of the world’s most productive growing regions has ground to a halt, causing the price of key food staples and fertilizer to approach record levels and sparking fears of worsening global hunger.

“The bullets and bombs in Ukraine could take the global hunger crisis to levels beyond anything we’ve seen before.”

“The escalation of the conflict is now putting markets into serious turmoil,” the Agricultural Market Information System said Monday in a report. “Any serious disruption of production and exports from these suppliers will no doubt drive up prices further and erode food security for millions of people.”

David Beasley, executive director of the World Food Programme (WFP) at the United Nations, warned recently that “the bullets and bombs in Ukraine could take the global hunger crisis to levels beyond anything we’ve seen before.”

“This is not just a crisis inside Ukraine,” said Beasley. “This is going to affect supply chains, and particularly the cost of food.”

The Russian military’s ongoing assault on Ukraine has brought one of the world’s leading “breadbaskets” to a virtual standstill. As a result of diminished exports, wheat prices have surged, reaching levels last seen during the global food crisis of 2007-2008.

According to Bloomberg, “Futures in Chicago jumped by the daily limit for the sixth straight session, rising 7% to $12.94 a bushel. That builds on a massive surge of 41% last week, the most in data spanning six decades.”

“Ukraine and Russia together account for more than a quarter of global trade of wheat, used in everything from bread to noodles and livestock feed,” the news outlet reported. “The conflict has closed major ports in Ukraine, and severed logistics and transport links. Trade with Russia has also been stifled by the complexity of navigating sanctions and soaring insurance and freight costs.”

The high grain prices that helped contribute to the Arab Spring uprisings more than a decade ago have already been surpassed and are expected to increase further as long as Moscow’s attack persists—exacerbating hunger, especially if governments are unable or unwilling to soften the impact on workers and the poor.

mRNA-pimping Bayer executive GLOATS over global acceptance of gene therapy

The purveyors of the Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19) plandemic are now openly bragging about how they fooled the world into accepting gene therapy into their bodies under the guise of “vaccination.”

Bayer Pharmaceuticals Division President Stefan Oelrich spoke at the recent World Health Summit. He gloated about how the plandemic shifted public opinion about what is acceptable to inject into the body.

“Uh, we’re really taking that leap, uh, us as a company,” Oelrich stated, having some difficulty getting his thoughts out with any kind of cadence.

“In cell or gene therapy, which to me is one of these examples, we’re really, we’re going to make a difference hopefully, uh, moving forward.”

Oelrich went on to talk about how even just a few years ago, the vast majority of people have said no way to experimental gene manipulation. Thanks to aggressive propaganda from the likes of Tony Fauci and other corrupt world leaders, most people ended up complying after a year of full-scale tyranny.

“There’s some, uh, ultimately, the, uh, the mRNA vaccines, uh, are an example for that, uh, cell or gene therapy,” Oelrich added.

“I always like to say that if we had surveyed two years ago, uh, in the public, would you be willing to take, uh, uh, gene or cell therapy and inject it into your body, we would have probably had a 95 percent refusal rate.”

“I think, uh, this pandemic has also opened many people’s eyes to, to innovation in the way that, uh, was maybe not possible before,” he further added.

The globalists now know they have full control with minimal resistance

To recap, we went from “two weeks to flatten the curve” to mandatory face masks to fast-tracked “vaccines” under Donald Trump to mandatory injections under Joe Biden.

As far as the narrative goes, it went from SARS-CoV-2 leaking into bat soup at a wet market to the virus “accidentally” escaped from a laboratory in China to Moderna patented the virus years before its release to this now admission that the whole thing was a scam to get people to permanently modify their DNA.

It is truly amazing that all of these changes occurred in just two short years, and barely anyone seems to have noticed. A bioengineered cold, in essence, was used to grift, swindle and basically destroy the world while turning all of the “fully vaccinated” into walking trans-humans.

The seeming ease with which the globalists pulled all of this off suggests that they are now fully confident they have complete control over the masses, at least in the West.

They no longer care if the scamdemic gets exposed, and are now, in fact, exposing it themselves while laughing in our faces about it.

“It seems that Stefan Oelrich and the World Health Summit found that profound revelation of theirs: that tyranny works, is a good thing, and is even a little exciting,” wrote someone in response to the clip of Oelrich speaking.

“People dumb enough to get a ‘vaccine’ created literally LAST YEAR with NO IDEA of the LONG TERM side effects … Sorry, you did that to yourself,” wrote someone else.

“The people I actually feel bad for are the ones FORCED to test out these ‘vaccines’ or they lose their job, are unable to travel certain places, unable to go grocery shopping (e.g., Lithuania), unable to get medical treatment (Australia, Canada, United States). If these ‘vaccines’ were so ‘Safe and Effective’ why did they have to FORCE people to take them?”

It has become apparent that New Zealand is getting more entangled in the U.S. Empire than ever before. Don’t be fooled that New Zealand and America’s longest war—Afghanistan—is over and ended in abject withdrawal and defeat by the Taliban in August 2021.

Or that New Zealand was not invited to join the new AUKUS pact between the U.S., UK and Australia, to provide the latter with nuclear-powered (but not nuclear-armed) submarines. New Zealand’s nuclear-free policy might rule out any such subs using our waters but New Zealand, under this Labour government, has expressed keenness to be involved with other aspects of AUKUS.

The Waihopai spy base has been New Zealand’s most important service for the U.S. Empire for decades. In 2021 the Government announced that it will be dismantling and decommissioning Waihopai’s two most unmissable features, namely the giant white domes that cover the satellite-interception dishes within.

Both dishes and domes have been declared obsolete 20th century relics that are no longer fit for 21st century spying. They will be removed in 2022. But the Government has no intention of dismantling the spy base itself; instead, it will be modernized to use more efficient (and less glaringly conspicuous) methods of spying.

All of this, from New Zealand’s involvement in Afghanistan to operating Waihopai on behalf of the U.S. National Security Agency, is governed by New Zealand’s decades-long membership in Five Eyes, the electronic spying agreement between the U.S., UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand (originally it was referred to by its formal title, the UKUSA Agreement; Five Eyes is a more recent name). But it is much more than that—Five Eyes is a de facto geopolitical bloc.

“The Price of the Club”

John Key explicitly cited the Five Eyes as the justification for New Zealand’s involvement in the the Iraq War: The New Zealand Herald reported: “Prime Minister John Key says New Zealand’s likely military contribution to the fight against Islamic State ‘is the price of the club’ that New Zealand belongs to with the likes of the United States, Australia, Britain and Canada in the intelligence alliance known as Five Eyes.”[1]

More recently, New Zealand’s Five Eyes partners have tried to make it an actual geopolitical bloc, issuing statements about China’s various misdeeds, e.g., in Hong Kong, and pressured New Zealand to sign on. In some cases, the Government has done so; in others it has asserted the increasingly threadbare claim that New Zealand has an independent foreign policy.

“’We are uncomfortable with expanding the remit of the Five Eyes,’ [Foreign Affairs Minister] Nanaia Mahuta said to reporters. ‘New Zealand has been very clear, certainly in this term and since we’ve held the portfolio, not to invoke the Five Eyes as the first point of contact of messaging out on a range of issues that really exist out of the remit of the Five Eyes.’”[2]

But that sort of thing is merely a skirmish, a question of emphasis. New Zealand is in Five Eyes, boots and all.

And the U.S., under Joe Biden, is keen to use blocs like Five Eyes as part of his “Indo-Pacific” strategy, the central policy plank of which is to contain China (whilst simultaneously confronting Russia on the other side of the world). When he took office Biden said “America’s back!” Yes, it is—back to saber-rattling and warmongering. And it wants its traditional allies (or satellites, as the West used to disparagingly call the Soviet Union’s allies during the Cold War) all on board and on message.

U.S. Grants Perks to New Zealand Capitalists Because of Five Eyes

To sweeten the deal, the U.S. is prepared to make Five Eyes membership an attractive proposition. So, Five Eyes has been expanded from intelligence and political ties to also now being explicitly about money and access to markets. The message from Washington is clear: Be in our “club” and we’ll make it worth your while.

This was spelled out in a fascinating article entitled “New Zealand Investors Won Carve-Out From U.S. Foreign Financing Rules.”[3]

“New Zealanders will now jump through fewer hoops to invest in American businesses and real estate, after the Government secured a temporary exemption to the country’s foreign investment screening rules. The U.S. decision represents another step towards more tightly binding together Five Eyes nations, with New Zealand’s intelligence-sharing relationship and defence cooperation cited as key factors for the decision…”

“The Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States, an interagency organisation which scrutinises the national security implications of investments into the country, announced earlier this month (January) that New Zealand had been added to its list of ‘excepted foreign states.’”

“In 2020, the Committee’s remit expanded beyond ‘control’ transactions, where a foreign investor would take controlling interest in a U.S. business, to cover investments in more sensitive companies, as well as the purchase of real estate near sensitive U.S. government facilities…While Australia, Canada and the United Kingdom secured exceptions from those expanded controls at the time, as well as a new requirement for mandatory filing, New Zealand did not, placing an extra burden on Kiwi investors….”

“In a fact sheet outlining the rationale for the change of heart, the U.S. Treasury Department cited New Zealand’s ‘intelligence-sharing relationship with the United States and its collective defense arrangement and cooperation with the United States’ as among the factors which earned it an exemption…. While the addition of New Zealand showed some willingness to expand the benefits of the carve-outs to new investors, the fact the group remained restricted to Five Eyes members did not provide any clear sense of whether it would offer an exemption to countries outside of the intelligence pact.”
